    After primary brewing, take your "sludge" from the primary fermentor and dump that on your hop plant bases. They seem to love it.

    Thanks for this video! First time hop grower here in Missouri. I’ve got Cashmere, Fuggles, Triumph, and Vista. Having a blast, so I’m planning to add more varieties next year. Growing them up the side of my windmill.

    Nice video, I might use some of your ideas myself. I am in Western NY, on the shore of Lake Ontario. Hops love it here, I usually Harvest in lake Augusta but usually mid-sept, just before they all turn brown. I guess it depends on the weather an this year (2020) I harvested them today! One thing I learned is to not grow them too close to the house foundation. We had terrible flooding here last few years and so I had to dig up around the foundation. The hop roots had grown down the block and worn off the bituminous coating, allowing water through the block. I moved my hop garden away from the house. I now need to make better hop poles so they go higher. I have cascade, haltertau, nugget and magnum.
    Cheers!

      Great advice, I'm close to harvest time myself too. Weather as been warmer than usual so my cones are close to be ready. I'll be upgrading my pole set up for my Cascade next spring, I want a good 10 to 12 ft. plus ropes that will travel another 10 towards my home. Such a cool plant to grow! Glad you loved the video, will make more about hops next spring to showcase my improved set up!

    • @bringyourempties
      @bringyourempties  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly a small room and dehydrator running at maximum. Emptying the water tank as often as possible. The fan just keeps the air flowing at a constant rate and reduces the heating from the dehydrator.

    Fun video, just picked my 2020 nugget hops. For cleaning that sticky resin mess I suggest rubbing alchohol surfaces , for your hands as well. Even that hand gel sanitizer works well to breake it down off your hands

    Really liked your hops plants. Would like to see how did you set them up, which structure is made to let it grow. From your video it looks like some simple ropes. I'm planting Chinook hops and made some wood triangle like structure, dunno if it is properly set. Anyway hops are growing each day here I am curious when it reaches to the top to see how plant will start behaving.

    • @bringyourempties
      @bringyourempties  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, it's a quite simple set up, wood structure with ropes going down. I've recently upgraded the set-up which is not perfect yet. I've went with a higher wood post with an iron string attached to my home, needs a lot of adjustments but would probably be good to do an update about it soon. Thanks for watching too!

    I’m trying to figure out how to cut them down. Do you have a video talking/showing that process more? We’re growing Cascade, Comet, Crystal, Chinook, and Cenntennial in Sonoma county, Northern California. We just planted this year and missed harvesting cause of fire distractions. This was their first year and I’m not sure how to far to cut them down.
    Watching this showed me the general process, which of course make me realize that you must have to cut the trellis cords every year as well, which also makes me wonder how we’re going to get new ones up without a Jenny lift.
    (Clearly, we’re gonna need a much bigger ladder.)

    Mine mature faster at the top so I have a carabiner at the top of the trellis line so I can take the bines up and down multiple times in order to harvest what’s ready. Or am I doing something wrong and they should all be harvested at once?

    • @bringyourempties
      @bringyourempties  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's actually genius, you could wait to harvest everything at the same time but depending on how much hops you have it can be an issue to get them all in one day. I cut my harvest days over usually 3 days. This way you don't burn yourself and it gives me time to dry out the most recent harvest. Live the carabiner idea too!

    Thanks for the video. Well done. I have just bought two hop plants (Green Bullet in New Zealand) I will dry them as you have. Question. When they are dry, do you use the same amount in your brew as pellet hops?

    • @bringyourempties
      @bringyourempties  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don’t have the exact ratio but rule of thumb is that pellets yield approx. 10% more bitterness than whole leaf. Experiment with them since hops are also sensible to the flora and might vary in components according to where they’ve grown and also the weather. Thanks a lot for watching and keep us posted on the results!

    • @bringyourempties
      @bringyourempties  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I’ve taken the appropriate mesures so it as enough breathing space between the bines and the brick wall. Thanks a lot for the advice! 😊

    • @friedoompa-loompa2876
      @friedoompa-loompa2876 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t really need to worry about your wall with hop bines, unlike vines they need to wrap around something to climb. You just need solid anchors bc these things can get pretty heavy

    Any tips on how we should improve our hop yard production?

    • @mauriziobussolino2115
      @mauriziobussolino2115 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey it me again!
      Trim your root /rhizome system every couple years then add some good fertilizer. Some good options are chicken manure based organics like the ones made by Espoma (Plant Tone)
      Or some good compost or Kelp.
      The production after the early spring trim will be a bit less, but a ton more flavor.
      I also mulch the beds with wood chips to keep the moisture in the ground. And obviously they need tons of sun!

      @bringyourempties  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the heads up, I'll be working a bit harder on my rhizomes next spring. I need a big upgrade for the upcoming season!

    • @LorienF

      Maurizio Bussolino , what exactly do you mean by, “trim your root/ rhizome system? Do you dig around? Please say more about this. I am brand new to hop growing and I haven’t come across this instruction yet. Much abliged. 🙏💚

    • @mauriziobussolino2115
      @mauriziobussolino2115 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LorienF
      Yes, wait until the ground thaws out(if it freezes at all) or get on it before they usually start coming out of the ground in your area. Dig a circle around the root system leaving the crown untouched and remove as much of the smallest roots (rhizomes) that spread out far from the crown. There are some videos on TH-cam as well. It is important you wait unti it's early in the season, also depending on your climate. Those roots if kept moist can re-sprout and grow into new plants.
      I use a three teeth, claw like, digger and move the dirt gently. You want to leave the strongest bigger rhizomes that come off the crown. My Nugget plant after 3 years had a root system that spun over 6 ft off the crown.
