Like Craft Beer ? Let's Grow Some Hops !

- If you like craft beer as much as I do, you probably would like to save some money and brew your own. I prefer a hoppy IPA, so I decided to grow some hops, Chinook and Zeus. This is my first time growing hops and it's been a lot of fun watching the plants climb a 12 foot trellis, in a hurry. The next step is to harvest the hop clusters, get them dried out, and start brewing...I think ?

Harvest when crispy and fragrant, cut down to a few inches of the base at the end of the season when they sprout in spring pick best two stems of each plant to run your trellis, next season will be way better yield wise, brew some beer very rewarding cheers from michigan!

I just learned that there is something called Hops less than 5 days ago and I was reading on how to buy it and how to grow it
And today comes this great video, I don't think this is coincidence

Bobby if all the hops are brown and they should be in oct cut the vine near the ground bring the vine down pick the hops and freeze them. frost will kill the plant but the root should overwinter. Chnoock are native american but all should overwinter and come back next spring.
I'm expecting much better production next year, Hopefully I get some cooperation from Mother Nature. We're in the midst of a serious drought and despite a lot of watering from me, I think the plants could have done even better with a few decent rains.

Sweet! MPH and beer! Hey been watching your channel for 4 or 5 years now. You and your bride are inspirational. Been brewing for 3 years now. When I go into a hobby, it's all or nothing. I've grown 7 varieties here in NW Arkansas cascade, alpharoma, Pacific gem, centennial, tripple perle, sterling, multi-head neo mexicana. The order in which listed did the best. Anything with Cascade parentage or new Zealand varieties do pretty well in southern climates. What I look for in the harvest is the sound of crinkley tissue paper. Pick all and leave the bines on the poles for your first year. Use box fan with hops sandwiched between clean air filters and then Vacuum seal. If you have less than 3-4 oz of hops, brew a 3 gallon batch maybe brew in a bag stove top for all grain or even an extract brew woud be fine. Zeus is good in pales, ipas, blondes or ambers. Check "Haphazard Homestead". She knows about all sorts of groovy stuff and grows her own hops. She even shows you how to harvest parts for eating in the spring that taste and chew like asparagus. I saw a neat hinged hops trellis, but not sure if she was the one who made it. She does a lot of foraging and non-traditional things that we don't think of doing anymore.

As a former brewery owner and semi-professional brewer I'd say Cascades should grow well in our heat. The first year they need to be well watered. You can split the rhizomes each year in the spring and double your vines. Cheers!

Next year your vines should be larger and more productive. You are the master Gardner of all master gardeners that have ever been watch out for Japanese beetles. And Cascades are the native hop i misspoke.

Don't know anything about growing hops or brewing beer, so I will simply say that I have no doubt you will turn your 🌱 🌱 hop plants into your home brewed 🍺 🍺 beer!!! Looks like you've got a good handle on the growing part.......👍👍

I've had several beers from the Asheville area, good stuff. Would like to make a trip over there for the Fall leaves and some serious sampling of breweries. Blue Mountain is our fav brewery to eat at. .great beer, great food, and awesome scenery and overall atmosphere.

I started this year too but just in back yard, you may be late if its still green and when you pinch it and it comes back then its ok if its still green so cut the vines and pick.

Sorry I don't have any info to give. My neighbor has a buddy who grows these in a greenhouse hydroponically... I'm trying to check out that operation. But seeing how those things grow, I don't I'll be planting these in the basement. Hope you have a video of your final product :-)

I usually just skip the beer and go straight for the liquor myself, but those hops look damn healthy! Maybe next year you can convert some potatoes into some homemade vodka?
I've heard of making vodka from potatoes, but never seen it in a store. I'm a Bourbon guy myself, Wild Turkey.
Not a beer drinker.. But love the smell of hops! I think there is some other culinary OR medicinal use for them as well! GROW THEM! allaboutbeer.com/finding-culinary-uses-hops/ I know growing hops up in the NW area is a big deal.. so many handcraft beer businesses up there. Hops are really expensive.. if you try to buy them by the pound. GROW THEM.
Put some alchol dehydrated beer into the soil (Vit B complex and sugars), and they will grow into Godzillas. And if you have some craft breweries in the area, get their post-mash, put that into the soil, and again all that fiber, mash, sugars, starches, proteins, amino acids, will make you an entire Eiffel Tower of permaculture food forest ....

Cascade hops are the best. I wonder how they will do down south? I heard that they are prone to powdery mildew and other humidity diseases.
Not sure how Cascade will do here, but I plan on finding out next year.

Pumpkin update is coming. It was a struggle with the heat, but we finally have a few decent pumpkins.

Just the first year, they will tack off. Haven’t grown any myself but their are plenty of videos in the tube for that knowledge of when their ready. Grow some wheat and barley and your set.
There he is ... Mmmm HPie ... Hops grow as fast as kudzu. Hops grown in WA and OR state are massive acreages of 15+ ft tall fence lines. Hops are cousins to marijuana ... like sugar is to cocaine (!)
I saw videos from the Northwest. Hops looked just like Kudzu.
Would think local microbreweries would love to buy their hops locally. Might be a good cash crop if you have the room. =If it's green, *you can grow it* !!!
I have to drive about an hour to get to any breweries. I'm truly in the middle of nowhere. I'd like to find somebody around here that I could sell to and make some extra change...be it hops, tomatoes, etc.
Right on we got a ton 8 need to upload from rhizomes to trellis systems to explaining in-depth to breeding to harvest. I m excited to see you venture in the hop world it's a unique type of Agra. But heck yeah loving on you videos info to feed the mind and ideas.
recirculating hydroponic hops growing system?. dutch buckets? super hops. i heard kent goldings is a good one to grow.
Kent golding is a good one to grow if you want a neutral or English style beer. The ones hes growing are American and New Zealand varieties. Much more citrusy or fruit kinda flavors. Like those in many of the IPAs.

I hear ya. It was a long hot summer here, serious drought. I had to water constantly.
