Upon further reflection I think there may be a missed opportunity here! Since you broadcast from your dining room with kitchen in background, maybe a name for this series could be “Cathy’s Craft/Test Kitchen”. You could occasionally have your industry friends as guest testers. 🤣🤣 I mean Christopher Kimball is still going strong after 25+ years!
I use Ardyth's method of putting the to be emboss image in a small foil-lined box and heating from the top. The aluminum foil warms up with the heat and keeps the paper from warping. Added plus is no burnt fingers. Thanks for all your videos!
Cath, I learned that if you are using emb powder with glitter heat fron under & if you use regular emb powder go from the top. Hope this helps! Hugs my crafty Sister XOXOXO
I have a piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil. Use a clothes pin to hold the embossed piece to cardboard and heat from top. Seems to help with warping and foil reflects heat from beneath.
I usually start under and finish over, particularly with powders that have chunky bits of stuff in them.. keeps it from blowing away, and loosing the texture/sparkle of whatever’s in there! 🧑🏼🎨👍🏻🤗
Since one of Jennifer’s last videos I tried also under and my results are way smoother. Which was annoying when I forgot that I liked the extra texture for clouds I diecutted😅 but most more solid embossing projects I like to heat emboss from under and I have a dual speed heat tool and discovered when it is hot enough I can use the lower speed better and the paper curls less when I heat set it from under. But it is sometimes difficult and you need to have more patience, and patience is not my middle name🙈
I usually heat from the top, and then finish off underneath like you do, for the warping of the cardstock. However, if I'm using what I consider less than "sticky" ink, or an EP with a lot of tinsel in it, or a more fragile card stock, I often heat from the bottom. Reason for the less than sticky ink is that I can use other than embossing or pigment inks and still heat emboss, but I don't have to worry about the particles of EP blowing off the stamped area.
I pour embossing powder over the image and hold the card level and shake side to side so the powder glides over the stamped ink. Then i pour the excess off to a piece of paper, but avoid flicking the back of the card…sometimes that dislodges loose powder that hasn’t hit the sticky ink. Only remove the flakes that are in the non-stamped image area with a stiff brush before heating. Get good results
the under method works best if you have chunky powder with big particles or glitter that might blow away. otherwise not problem, the thicker the cardstock the longer it takes to heat up and from the bottom always takes longer as well
Hi. Thank you for this. I usually go at it all willy-nilly and end up with surprise outcomes, as in it's a surprise if it works out! I look forward to you doing a test for reducing warping of the cardstock, another area where I'm working in the dark. Thank you again, great video.
I have no luck with underneath…..paper warps badly. I usually just double emboss and get nice smooth results from the top with minimal warping. Using fine detail sentiments, I just single emboss. But truth be told…..I love foiling my sentiments! Always smooth and always beautiful. 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing your test.
I usually do over, apart from when I emboss on vellum. Then I do under, because I feel like I get a better result. I may be wrong, but it feels like I can "contain" the heat better then
For white I use tailored expressions white pigment ink pad sugar cube. I cannot stop getting the clear spots when I don’t use it and use Versamark instead with white. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong or am I using too much heat. But I found this is the solution.
Thank you Cathy - always appreciate your videos - always learn, am inspired and have fun. I recently found Marion Emberson from WOW embossing on TH-cam. Marion uses both heating from the top and bottom depending on the technique she is using. I am learning lots and lots of fun ways to use my embossing powders other than just using for sentiments which is my usual.
Cathy, I must say, I am loving these experimental youtube videos. Keep them coming please. Yes I agree, Jennifer Maguire has some great ideas too. Thank you for sharing.
Over, then a quick swipe from under to unwarp the paper. However, I'm not crazy about the orange peel look, so I often stamp it again after it's cooled (per Jennifer McGuire, of course), and re-emboss it.
If you are fast, you can add more powder while it's still hot and then reheat to smooth out your finish! Done this forever! I'm a top embosser btw! I actually never heard of this backside embossing until recently!! ☺
Hmm. I don't re-stamp it. I just put more powder on my still hot image and then reheat. I never get warped paper, but I have slightly scorched it... lol, so after adding more powder you just gotta let the paper cool in between those blasts.
Helpful tricks from this cheeky chick. I heat emboss from the top and do a quick heat swipe to the bottom. Thanks for the share. I hope your wrist is on the mend. Look forward to your next card sesh 👉
I don't do foils but I'm amazed that I haven't heard of anyone just laying their work with embossing power down on the heated plate of one of those devices.
Oooh, you did one of my suggestions! Love it! Thanks so much, Kathy. Have to say my results are usually the same as yours here, but have seen others with different results. I'll stick with what works for me.
Jennifer says that she cleans off the stamp in between the pressing of the first to second of the Versa Mark. To remove the anti static powder. And I would think with such a big bold stamp it would be helpful. I find the under to be smoother impression.
Loving these experiments - we'll have to get you a white lab coat. 👩🔬I use a mixture of over and under, it seems to keep the card flatter. Hope your wrist is okay soon.
Overall I don't think I have much luck with embossing. I think I expect it to always look smoother than it turns out. Lately I've been starting on the bottom, and then moving to the top. I've heard that helps with warping, but I seem to always have warping. 🤷♀️ It's a work in progress! 😂
I’ve been card making since 1990 and always heated from the top but would get frustrated with the results. I recently started heating from the bottom and have a perfect outcome every time. My vote is for heating from the bottom
Well, that is what I was hoping would happen by doing it from under! I've had a few folks tell me to try it. So it depends on the powder, and how long you heat. I've heard if you stamp and emboss it twice it can help!
@@czdesign I did too until Mr. Holtz told everyone in a live release not to tap the back. 🤷🏻♀️I can’t remember which release or I would tell you so you could hear from the man himself.
I LOVE these videos! You are now the “Alton Brown” of the card making world! We NEED this!😘
Love that!

😆 this is so true. This might be a new segment you should do Cathy. 🤔

I like using Ardith's method as well. I find it also keeps the mess in one spot that's easy to deal with.
So I have another video coming where I try a few techniques to limit warping! Coming soon!
use foil covered chipboard to lay image to be heat embossed - use clothes pin to keep it from shifting
What a good idea! Have never heard of this technique. Thank you!
Ooo, looking forward to seeing it.

Great tip!

Looks like from the top is the definite winner! Thanks!

You know what, I will try that!
I mostly do as you do: from the top and then bottom to flatten the cardstock. I often double emboss too.
For thick embossing, I find it best to start under and then finish on top
Great experiment! I start at the bottom, enough to warm the paper underneath and finish on top! Love your experiments. Thankyou!
Your paper thickness could also be a variable
the under method works best if you have chunky powder with big particles or glitter that might blow away. otherwise not problem, the thicker the cardstock the longer it takes to heat up and from the bottom always takes longer as well
Hello there Cathryn. I’ve seen you do both, over and under.
I do under with fine detail stamps that hold less powder to begin with. I find I lose less powder that way.
Hi. Thank you for this. I usually go at it all willy-nilly and end up with surprise outcomes, as in it's a surprise if it works out! I look forward to you doing a test for reducing warping of the cardstock, another area where I'm working in the dark. Thank you again, great video.

Thank you for sharing your test.
Thank you. This was eye-opening. I enjoy all of your videos!!! Thank you for the inspiration and entertainment 😻
Does your paper warp?
It does! I have another video on that coming!
I also do much better by going from the top! Thank you for the video. I always find your videos very helpful!
I usually do over, apart from when I emboss on vellum. Then I do under, because I feel like I get a better result. I may be wrong, but it feels like I can "contain" the heat better then
I only go under when it is chunky embossing powder or if it has things in the embossing powder that will get blown away.
Love these glasses on you….the frame is very flattering!
Oh thank you!
For white I use tailored expressions white pigment ink pad sugar cube. I cannot stop getting the clear spots when I don’t use it and use Versamark instead with white. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong or am I using too much heat. But I found this is the solution.
Wow! That put my latest tip in the bin then lol. 🌻🌻
Both!
So funny because I tried the Under method just last night and overheated every time! When I switched to Over, not a problem!! 😂
I have always embossed from the top. After your experiment, I will continue embossing this way.
I do both but just to even the cardstock out from warping
Thank you Cathy - always appreciate your videos - always learn, am inspired and have fun.

That’s awesome! I’m gonna check her out.
Cathy, I must say, I am loving these experimental youtube videos. Keep them coming please. Yes I agree, Jennifer Maguire has some great ideas too. Thank you for sharing.
I use distressed oxide inks for embossing and they work really well because they stay wet for a long time. And the color is so much richer.
Oh wow!

I've tried to do that, but the paper is so warped, it's hard to get it to stamp well the second time. Any tips?
That's my problem, too!!!
Hmm. I don't re-stamp it. I just put more powder on my still hot image and then reheat. I never get warped paper, but I have slightly scorched it... lol, so after adding more powder you just gotta let the paper cool in between those blasts.

good experiment! Thanks!
Great experiment
I do both

Never thought of that!
You’re always so fun to watch Kathy! Great tip on over/under technique. Nice to see the comparison. TFS!!!

Good information
Thank you love you brilliant ideas. 😍
I have always heated from the top. It hadn’t occurred to me to heat from the bottom. Maybe this video will cause me to change that.
Great experiment, good to know.
When I first heat embossed in the early 80’s I used a candle! Crazy I know.
I tried using a toaster decades ago too! I held the image over the toaster and let the heat melt the powder from below. (Didn’t work well for me LOL.)
Wow! I love that!
I’ve been card making since 1990 and always heated from the top but would get frustrated with the results. I recently started heating from the bottom and have a perfect outcome every time. My vote is for heating from the bottom
I'm going to have to keep trying!
I go at it from the top; but when my card stock begins to warp, I go to the bottom. Then I just alternate.
How do you avoid the bumpy look of embossing powder? It happens to me.
Well, that is what I was hoping would happen by doing it from under! I've had a few folks tell me to try it. So it depends on the powder, and how long you heat. I've heard if you stamp and emboss it twice it can help!
Thank you, I will try stamps d emboss twice. I also heat from top.
I use under when there is glitter in the powder. The glitter blows away if you don;t
oh good point!
Fyi. Your hair looks great today!
Oh thank you!
@@czdesign your are most welcome, have a fabulous day
Top!!!
I melt mine from the top but it is on a small cookie sheet from the dollar tree
Oh that's a great little tip!
I always emboss from the top.....
According to Tim Holtz you’re not supposed to tap the cardstock like that. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ Jennifer or Tim? Wow, which one should we go with? 😂😂
Ohhh, really? I always tap to get the excess of the rest of the non stamped area. Hmmmm.
@@czdesign I did too until Mr. Holtz told everyone in a live release not to tap the back. 🤷🏻♀️I can’t remember which release or I would tell you so you could hear from the man himself.
I heat a little under before I then heat on top for 99% of the time
neither look good to me.
I can see that, too. Ha!
IMO handmade cards are not perfect. Glue it and move on I say. 😂
