  • I have always wanted to try Gamsol and today is the day! Gamsol is an odorless, mineral spirit used in art projects to soften mediums, and today my medium is colored pencils.
Heavily inspired by @GinaKDesigns-StampTV and @LisaHetrickIndigojadeArt!

My bedroom is full of acrylic, bunches of mica powders, alcohol inks and molds. Wanna do tye dye? I got you covered. Dyes, shirts, masks, socks, etc. Oh, you like jewelry making? Got that stuff too. Acrylic paints? Got them, silicone and canvases. Please don’t get me started with anything else! Though your excitement over Gamsol and colored pencils is SO tempting. 😊

Great job on your maiden Gamsol voyage! I, too, was influenced by Gina K years ago & took the Gamsol plunge. I don’t use the stumps, because someone (I can’t recall whom) showed how to use an empty Tim Holtz alcohol marker (I got mine on Amazon) to put the Gamsol in. You just scribble on a scrap to clean the tip when changing colors. My only other tip is that Gamsol will bleed through to the back of your cardstock, so experiment with thickness of your cardstock before using Gamsol directly on a card base. Have fun! Thanks for sharing! 😊❤️

Beautiful creation Cathy! I'm gonna have to break out my gamsol too! My, how times have changed hey? Your little anecdote about left-handedness made me smile, and I love that you "fought back". One of my favorite stories of all time is when my mother was a child the teachers at school told her she could not use her dominant left hand. She was so upset. She went home for lunch and her dad, who had the same experience as your dad, just got this protective, loving look on his face after she told him what was going on. He said, "don't you worry about a thing my sweet Betty, daddy will be back. Enjoy your lunch." Off he went. Not too long after he came back and said to my mom, "now sweetheart, you go right ahead and use your left hand to do your school work. There's nothing to worry about. The teachers understand now." What I wouldn't give to have been a fly on the wall for THAT conversation!!! 🤣 Thanks for the great inspiration, and starting off my day with a favorite memory. Have a great day Cathy!!! 🥰

I got such a kick out of hearing you say "look, I'm doing it, it actually looks like I know what I'm doing". It is such a turn on to all of us when we try something new and it looks tremendous. Welcome to the world of pencils and Gamsol blending. So glad you like it , it will change your world. You may even stop using alcohol ink pens.

I've wanted to do watercolor for years but never had the courage to try it. You have inspired me, much to the distress of my bank account! Prismacolor pencils, Gamasol, an empty blending brush pen, watercolor paper, and a set of stamps are on the way! I live out in the boonies in the middle of MO so I have to order everything unless I want to drive 200 miles (roundtrip) so it will be a few days before I can give this a go but you have inspired me to take the plunge! Thank you for being real for all of us. Plain and simple, you rock!

Yes, I've used Gamsol before (like you, thanks to GinaK). One thing I remember was that Gina recommended sitting your stumps in the gamsol for awhile so it can absorb more of it. Since your coloring was on the minimalist side, it probably wouldn't have made a difference. But when using more color, having a well soaked stump helps. Also, the sandpaper helps to give your blending stump a sharper point, as well.

Seeeee - I just viewed a post on Instagram artist using Gamsol on wood cut after stamping with lawn fawn, then color pencil, it was a thing a beauty. It's in the air at the moment. Thank for taking time to post video. Yay for being bright enough to purchase good materials and hooray for "finding" them at the most opportune time! Sometimes we just need time to catch up to our own creativity - (at least that's how I'm justifying shopping my years old stash this coming year!)

SAME! Even in the 70’s they tried to make us lefties into righties! I hold my pencil “correctly” and don’t have a hook, but my writing surface is at a complete 45 degree angle in front of me. Teachers always straightened my paper to the “correct” and proper angle and my elbow would jam into my ribs. ANYWAY, I love coloring in coloring books, but I’m intimidated as hell to color my stamps so I stick to layered stamps. Oh and colored pencils (I have every type imaginable!) are my favorite coloring/drawing medium!

I do have Gamsol. I took colored pencil classes where the instructor showed us how to use it. That was several years ago. The scrapbook store that offered these classes went out of business quite a while ago and I miss it, but I did learn a lot there. I don't have any tips for you. I think you did very well on your own. Gina is a fabulous teacher.

Yay! Your joy in sharing is so fun! Pencil-coloring is one of my favorites. I prefer to blend with the pencils themselves when I have lots of time and sometimes with a colorless blender pencil. But, I’ve used Gamsol for years with various brands of colored pencils. It makes quick & fun work of the coloring & gives a nice water-colory look. Always fun to change things up & revisit our supplies, though! I giggled at the sound of the paper stump on the paper - it doesn’t bother me but some feel it’s like nails on a chalkboard. Lol. Thanks for sharing your venture into Gamsol with colored pencils! ♥️

I always use it with my colored pencils, I’ve actually just purchased alcohol markers and I’m just learning to use them. But I’ve been a colored pencil user for like 20years! For me you can really shade your picture lots of blending. I hope this doesn’t offend anyone sometimes money is tight and this tip was given to me by a demonstrator at a stamp convention in Arizona, odorless paint thinner is basically the same thing and you get at-least twice the amount! I love your channel

Good for you for breaking into your bottle of Gamsol.
I've been using it with coloured pencils for decades (that's all we had back then). I still prefer it to Al markers ie Copics, though the colours are slightly muted. Definitely not as expensive.
Here's my tip- to prevent your stump from soaking up too much product, I put a small flat cosmetic sponge cut to size in the bottom of a single serving jam jar. Add enough Gamsol to wet the sponge. You just have to lightly press your stump into the sponge to only get the tip moist.

Cathy, there is an artist Sandy Allnock. She uses Copics, pencils with and without Gamsol and watercolor. She added a couple cotton balls in the bottom of her jar with her Gamsol so it doesn’t evaporate as quickly. Then all you have to do is saturate as needed with the big bottle. I know you are busy but you may want to check out some of her TH-cam videos. 🙂

I added cleaning sponges (cut the top crubbing layer off), but cotton balls is a better idea perhaps, thx.

I use about 3 cotton rounds in the bottom of a small jar for the mineral spirits…I have a habit of dabbing off the excess mineral spirits on a couple of folded paper towel so the mineral spirits doesn’t take so long to evaporate. Please take note; even though you are using odorless mineral spirits, it still has fumes so please use it near an open window.

Just like you, I am greatly inspired by Gina K. And I also have Gamsol that I’ve had for multiple years after watching Gina use it. Now you’ve inspired me to get out my blending stumps and give it a try.

Your snowman is perfect! I love gamsol blending, and use Prismacolor pencils.
I went to a little tutorial session at a craft show where they were letting us try, and
I was "a believer!" I bought all the stuff! I use a bingo bottle which keeps down evaporation,
and when I knock it over, it doesn't spill! Keep up the fun videos! Hugs! Peggy

Gamsol is fantastic! I've been using gamsol with colored pencils for about 11-12yrs. No chemical oder. Its a game changer. Love it! Vikings fan here! Even my very tiny chihuahuas that can't maintain body heat because of tiny size, each have a Vikings fleece blankets just like mine. See you soon Cathy!

I'd love to make a cute and super simple card on year for all my mailings. This would be perfect! Super fast! I always end up with millions it seems of die cuts! And both of the chrome plates from sizzix the hard plastic that is glued onto the chrome plate, cracked and curled!!!!! too bad because they cut beautifully and left no marks in the plate. Think im going to try to reach sizzix and tell them what they must jnow by now and see what they will so about it.
Just adorable cards. I see on a mint base with pink and teal. Love it!

Hi from Germany 😊, for many years I was coloring with Polychromos using Baby-Oil. I have Gamsol and used it and I first didn't like the smell and second the paper got soaked very fast. My Baby-Oil I have sitting in a little box with some makeup-sponges and I just dip into the drained sponges with my stumps.
Lately I learned to use the pencils without oil and found I can layer color much better. But if I have a very simple image like your Snowman and need to color fast I still use baby-oil.

Love the card Cathy! I have used Prisma colored pencils with a Decorative Painting group in the past 10 years on a couple of projects. Wish our chapter was still in existence. Conventions have gone by the wayside. It was a BIG business back in the 90s when I used to go. Last one I went to was in 2015 and now National Convention no longer exists. 😢. It’s been since that year that I had the colored pencil experience with our local chapter. I only have enough of the pencils to do those two specific projects. Would love to get the whole set and then YT artists that use them to gain better knowledge of them. Need to get those pencils out now and use them on cards. Never gave it a thought to use on cards! Not even sure if I have Gamsol here! Now have to look and see. The card is adorable! TFS!!

Cathy, nothing makes me happier then hearing you get excited about doing something well. I just love you girl. Yes, I've used Gamsol before and you know I make cards in bulk to give to cancer patients. Well I got my coloring done and then started my gamsol on each one, and shortly afterwards my head was spinning a bit. LOL the fumes got me. Gina recommends a lavender oil as an alternative and I tried to buy some, but everyone was out. One of the ladies who donates cards suggested I use a bit of lotion. I did and it worked fine. I am guessing it was the glycerin that did the trick. So if anyone is trying to blend out 20 cards in one day try glycerin. I will pass along a tip, sand your tips sharp instead of cutting them. You also need to let your stump stay in the gamsol for a few seconds. Gina says it absorbs into the stump better. Your little snow guy is just adorable. Would you maybe give us some pointers on how you get the die centered around the piece you die cut out? I haven't had much luck as each company does their dies a bit different. I started die cutting first, then laying the die cut back into the paper, and stamping on it in the center. It's much easier to put my stamp in the whole to center it before I put the die cut back in there then stamp it. Jennifer gave us that template idea, and no one knows more than JMAC. I began my stamping journey in 1995. I worked for a craft manufacturer in customer service and the company gave us great classes on using their products, so we could advise individuals who called with questions.

I used to color adult coloring books so I learned to use Gamsol to blend two colors of my colored pencils. (usually a light and dark) I like the results. I have similar situations though, I see a technique on youtube, go out and buy all the things then forget what I wanted to do with them. LOL. The trials of a crafter.

Kathy I have a cotton topper on my bottle. You just need a bit of gamsol. You do not want the whole stick stuck in the liquid as it wicks too far into the stick. Just touch the tip on a soaked cotton ball and it should be enough. Lol. But your style worked for you. Cheers.
