Just gotta say, and I know it's not just me - you make SOOOO many of us feel better about our purchases when you freely admit that you've had your Gamsol kit sitting around untried for "3 years...maybe 4?" Phew. Thankful hugs from Maine.

My bedroom is full of acrylic, bunches of mica powders, alcohol inks and molds. Wanna do tye dye? I got you covered. Dyes, shirts, masks, socks, etc. Oh, you like jewelry making? Got that stuff too. Acrylic paints? Got them, silicone and canvases. Please don’t get me started with anything else! Though your excitement over Gamsol and colored pencils is SO tempting. 😊

Yes, I've used Gamsol before (like you, thanks to GinaK). One thing I remember was that Gina recommended sitting your stumps in the gamsol for awhile so it can absorb more of it. Since your coloring was on the minimalist side, it probably wouldn't have made a difference. But when using more color, having a well soaked stump helps. Also, the sandpaper helps to give your blending stump a sharper point, as well.

Beautiful creation Cathy! I'm gonna have to break out my gamsol too! My, how times have changed hey? Your little anecdote about left-handedness made me smile, and I love that you "fought back". One of my favorite stories of all time is when my mother was a child the teachers at school told her she could not use her dominant left hand. She was so upset. She went home for lunch and her dad, who had the same experience as your dad, just got this protective, loving look on his face after she told him what was going on. He said, "don't you worry about a thing my sweet Betty, daddy will be back. Enjoy your lunch." Off he went. Not too long after he came back and said to my mom, "now sweetheart, you go right ahead and use your left hand to do your school work. There's nothing to worry about. The teachers understand now." What I wouldn't give to have been a fly on the wall for THAT conversation!!! 🤣 Thanks for the great inspiration, and starting off my day with a favorite memory. Have a great day Cathy!!! 🥰

Great job on your maiden Gamsol voyage! I, too, was influenced by Gina K years ago & took the Gamsol plunge. I don’t use the stumps, because someone (I can’t recall whom) showed how to use an empty Tim Holtz alcohol marker (I got mine on Amazon) to put the Gamsol in. You just scribble on a scrap to clean the tip when changing colors. My only other tip is that Gamsol will bleed through to the back of your cardstock, so experiment with thickness of your cardstock before using Gamsol directly on a card base. Have fun! Thanks for sharing! 😊❤️

I've wanted to do watercolor for years but never had the courage to try it. You have inspired me, much to the distress of my bank account! Prismacolor pencils, Gamasol, an empty blending brush pen, watercolor paper, and a set of stamps are on the way! I live out in the boonies in the middle of MO so I have to order everything unless I want to drive 200 miles (roundtrip) so it will be a few days before I can give this a go but you have inspired me to take the plunge! Thank you for being real for all of us. Plain and simple, you rock!

Seeeee - I just viewed a post on Instagram artist using Gamsol on wood cut after stamping with lawn fawn, then color pencil, it was a thing a beauty. It's in the air at the moment. Thank for taking time to post video. Yay for being bright enough to purchase good materials and hooray for "finding" them at the most opportune time! Sometimes we just need time to catch up to our own creativity - (at least that's how I'm justifying shopping my years old stash this coming year!)

Yay! Your joy in sharing is so fun! Pencil-coloring is one of my favorites. I prefer to blend with the pencils themselves when I have lots of time and sometimes with a colorless blender pencil. But, I’ve used Gamsol for years with various brands of colored pencils. It makes quick & fun work of the coloring & gives a nice water-colory look. Always fun to change things up & revisit our supplies, though! I giggled at the sound of the paper stump on the paper - it doesn’t bother me but some feel it’s like nails on a chalkboard. Lol. Thanks for sharing your venture into Gamsol with colored pencils! ♥️

I always use it with my colored pencils, I’ve actually just purchased alcohol markers and I’m just learning to use them. But I’ve been a colored pencil user for like 20years! For me you can really shade your picture lots of blending. I hope this doesn’t offend anyone sometimes money is tight and this tip was given to me by a demonstrator at a stamp convention in Arizona, odorless paint thinner is basically the same thing and you get at-least twice the amount! I love your channel

Gina has me sold on using gamsol whenever I use my colored pencils. I bought a bottle a long time ago, used it once, and when I went to use it again a few years later, it all evaporated. I pour out some to use into a pimento jar, which is air tight. I cut a small square of Press n Seal to place over the top of my bottle of gamsol and it has kept it air tight.

I'd love to make a cute and super simple card on year for all my mailings. This would be perfect! Super fast! I always end up with millions it seems of die cuts! And both of the chrome plates from sizzix the hard plastic that is glued onto the chrome plate, cracked and curled!!!!! too bad because they cut beautifully and left no marks in the plate. Think im going to try to reach sizzix and tell them what they must jnow by now and see what they will so about it.

I’ve been using Gamsol for years now. Mineral oil works as well; I buy it in the digestive medicine section so it isn’t fragranced and doesn’t have additives ( usually on the bottom shelf; it is a laxative).
You can layer colored pencil over alcohol ink. You can still use Gamsol to blend but I typically use a blending marker. I love how CP “melt” into alcohol ink. I just love the subtle texture the layering creates. Plus most colored pencils are cheaper than Copics. I’ve only ever tried this with Copics.
I think we tend to overlook colored pencils. They are not as flashy as some coloring mediums. But they are so versatile. Colored pencils work with watercolors, acrylic paint, alcohol and other dye based inks. You can make them look smooth or create texture with strokes (fantastic for fur). You can also layer colored pencil almost endlessly. Sometimes I build up layers and use cp as a resist.
When I color human skin I typically use about 20 colors. The quality of human skin that makes it difficult to color is that skin is translucent so our skin color isn’t just the melanin in our skin, it is also light reflected off our blood, fat, etc. I feel like colored pencil is the best medium for coloring people and animals. Not that I typically put in that much work when coloring small images for cards, it’s usually larger images like portraits.
I like coloring. I find it very relaxing, almost meditative. But even if you are the sort of card maker who prefers faster images, colored pencils are still great for adding a bit of shading to colored cardstock or ink blending. I feel like pencils are easier to control than paint or blending brushes.

Awesome! Love your coloring. One of the ways I learned to use Gamasol is to put a little in a jar, like you did, and add a cotton ball. Using your stump on the cotton rather than straight into the Gamasol saves your stump from getting too wet. It also helps keeps your stump's tips from getting too mushy. I too would cut my stump for more precise tips.

Love the card Cathy! I have used Prisma colored pencils with a Decorative Painting group in the past 10 years on a couple of projects. Wish our chapter was still in existence. Conventions have gone by the wayside. It was a BIG business back in the 90s when I used to go. Last one I went to was in 2015 and now National Convention no longer exists. 😢. It’s been since that year that I had the colored pencil experience with our local chapter. I only have enough of the pencils to do those two specific projects. Would love to get the whole set and then YT artists that use them to gain better knowledge of them. Need to get those pencils out now and use them on cards. Never gave it a thought to use on cards! Not even sure if I have Gamsol here! Now have to look and see. The card is adorable! TFS!!

Bravo Cathy, you are so brave and the card is wonderful. I've got a ton of colored pencils I never use, and I want to use them with gamsol every time I see Gina K. do it. Thanks for making it look easy, now I have to try it! Ordering with your link...

I started using gamsol many years ago…long before I ever heard of Gina K (or you)! I love coloring that way! Your video made me want to dig my stuff out and have at it again!

So happy to watch this. I have items that I saw that I "had" to purchase and then just sit around. Thank you for all your inspirations.

I have never used Gamsol and colored pencils. I have the pencils, now I need to get the Gamsol and stumps. That turned out awesome!

I got such a kick out of hearing you say "look, I'm doing it, it actually looks like I know what I'm doing". It is such a turn on to all of us when we try something new and it looks tremendous. Welcome to the world of pencils and Gamsol blending. So glad you like it , it will change your world. You may even stop using alcohol ink pens.
