When Clint Eastwood points his finger at you in a gun like gesture it's not a pathetic attempt to threaten. It's a warning because normally he doesn't wait after he pulls the gun out. Those guys just caught him on a good day.
That's part of it, but not all of it. He wanted them to think he was some crazy drooling old man. It's why he has that big old pipe wrench visible in his belt, while his pistol is concealed. He has a visible deadly weapon that is meant to draw your attention away from the real threat. He wanted to see if they would honor the threat the wrench posed. They were probably waiting for him to make a move towards the wrench which he never did, and he would've had to close the distance to use it...which again he never did. The meticulous way he reaches into his jacket was to hide the pistol before he felt like drawing it. Some classic Sun Tzu deceptive warfare right there.

Crazy scene. Notice how after he has pulled his gun and everything sort of settles down, he says take care now and the guy doing most of the talking says, you too. Like he had some sort of respect for someone crazier than him or something.
They listened to him, let her go, and hopefully learned their lesson. He respected that. Unlike the Hmong gang who kept harassing Tao and his family after they had the business end of Walt’s M1 in their face. They never learned their lesson and they paid the price

Clint Eastwood is a movie star and I will leave it at that. I used to work with a man that was in Vietnam and he was a Green Beret. I asked him what his job was and his job, with the four others in his group, was to scout the enemy position at three a.m. and report back to their commanding officer at five a.m. Sounds damn dangerous to me. By the way, of his original group, he is the only one that made it back to the states not in a pine box. And, I will tell you this, David's eyes were black as coal and he was not scared of a damn thing. He was not going to look for trouble and was a damn nice guy, but you also knew not to fuck with him.
That is a Colt Government 1911. Walt seems to have brought his rifle & sidearm home from the Korean War and his pistol looks to be the most original version of the 1911, made before WWI. There are subtle differences in the models that came after (IE the M1911A1) and Springfield Armory did manufacture some of them, but they were a Colt design. Springfield has long made their own version of the piece, just like practically every other firearm company on Earth. You are completely correct about the respect the weapon commands.
