Pre-bird is essential Mingus, I think, brilliant stuff. Have 1970s Japanese reissue which is great. Looking forward to the Roy Haynes.

The Ella Fitzgerald was indeed already released by Analogue Productions on their 45 RPM series. To me the highlight of the whole series -and my most awaited release of the year- is the Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago (a.k.a Cannonball & Coltrane), since it's one of my favorite records of all time, super glad it's coming out in an audiophile form. It might not be the best sounding record, but the music is amazing, take a listen to the opening version of "Limehouse Blues", pure fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥. Best wishes from Chile

Wish they would have done more Coltrane (e.g., Africa/Brass, Coltrane 1962, Impressions) or some of those killer McCoy Tyner Impulse sessions.

For me, anything with Ben Webster is a must have. I already have the the 3 items (with Hawk and Billie and as leader) here on CD, but I will definitely get the Acoustic Sounds versions when they come out. I have most of the others on CD, but I will pick and choose as they come out. The one which is an absolute must have is 'Very Tall' which shows Ray Brown at his absolute best, lifting Oscar and Milt in the air as they solo. Anyone who has not heard this before is in for a treat. If you were to ask me for the definition of a definition of a great rhythm section, I would nominate this along with Basie's classic sections with Freddie Green etc. .

    • @JazzBums
      @JazzBums  ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. I am gonna bust out my copy of Very Tall because I have not heard it in probably a year or so. - Chris

Ray Brown's later playing is the most underrated in jazz.

Not the most exciting set of titles but Journey in Satchidananda and Out of the Afternoon more than make up for it. There are also a few that I am not familiar with so I may grow to enjoy those.

  • @wmfraser00

Great break down, gents! (Found you via the IG account) I just ordered Alice Coltrane's Journey In Satchidananda & Kenny Dorham's Quiet Kenny which is back in stock. Can't wait for Ben Webster's Soulville to be released. I used to have the AP 2X45RPM pressing of Soulville which is glorious! Such a smooth sounding album too. I honestly prefer the single LP versions over the 45RPM double disks for the sake of convenience. Plus they take up less shelf space, which means more albums ;) Cheers!

They could have done Stan Getz "Sweet Rain" with Chick Corea, or other great choices could have been Stan Getz with the Oscar Peterson trio, or a killer one would have been "For Musicians Only". The choices this year seem to be more driven by Chad using the metal parts he already has with the Bernie Grundman remasters, which are cool, but I do love the work that Ryan k Smith is doing

The Oscar Peterson Trio Night Train has been on heavy streaming play lately while driving so this is an exciting surprise.

Good and very informative - again.
One gets much more insight on pro and cons than from the Kassem's presentation (of course - he has to sell the records).
    Thanks Gentlemen.
I'll get the Billie Holiday, probably Nina Simone, Hawkins & Webster - and Cannonball (to replace my Waxtime - embarassing! - copy).

With the Mercury & Emarcy OGs, the records with the blue labels tend to sound better than the dark grey/black label. I hope they do a good job on the Mingus and the Cannonball releases.

Might have to take the day off work when that Roy Haynes is finally in my clutches. Alice Coltrane is a go. I have the 45 Smokin at the half note but will get 33 (sell 45 if 33 matches sonics); same for Billie Holliday. Art is a go even though I have RSD mono (mono + stereo is the only way I do multiple copies of same album). Cannonball and Ella is a go. Oscar and Milt, will have to listen to first.

  • @Balonious_Crunk

I'm not particularly excited for this entire list, as my tastes lie more in the late 50's-60's Post-Bop and Avant garde. That being said I am excited for a few titles, mainly the Alice Coltrane, Roy Haynes and Mingus titles.
