    Could you show us your listening room?

    • @jazzvinylcollector
      @jazzvinylcollector  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes! I do need to do a video on this. At the moment, I have one video on how I organize my record collection which shows at least my shelves, and then another on my stereo setup, but I'd like to do something that is more representative of the entire listening room. For now: th-cam.com/video/DqVh-yxT4JY/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/e2Yt6uOAPfI/w-d-xo.html are the videos I have. I like the idea though, so stay tuned

    Wow, I have a different take on Hampton Hawes' piano playing, I find his playing consistently of the highest level, his articulation, and his sense of swing and time are impeccable. The lines that he improvises are so perfectly crafted. Some albums that haven't been mentioned that I'm shocked haven't come out on the series are his all-night sessions, featuring Jim Hall, these are an amazing showcase of his playing and essential listening. I really hope that these come out soon.
    I think it's true of both Hawes, and Shelly Manne, that they're playing won't come and hit you over the head at the first listen, but with more time their genius becomes incredibly evident.

    Also of note on the Helen Humes record is the arranging by the great Marty Paich who wrote the arrangements for Art Pepper plus 11!

    Thanks for the update and history on the titles, much appreciated! It is hard to find much fault with this new batch of Contemporary releases. But Ill do my best, ha.
    Seriously, the great news is we are getting “The Cry”, “For Real!” and finally at least one Shelly Manne Blackhawk title. Plus “The Fox”, McGhee and Edwards. I cant really complain too much. And you are correct “Firebirds” should also come out.
    What I don’t like is when one artist darling gets three titles in place of other great and more difficult to find other titles. Im a big Art Pepper fan and these are very good choices but I think “Intensity” would suffice until the next round, knix the Hummes (though I am one who likes her happy bright voice) and the *Webster. Kick in Jimmy Wood’s “Conflict” or “Awakenings” in mono and kick out “Way Out West” That Rollin’s title has gotten released in the box which sounds great. Replace the Hummes with say “Presenting Red Mitchell”. Yes, Red Mitchell. Classic straight ahead bop album that smokes. If soulful saxophone is needed then Jimmy Deuchar’s “Pub Crawling” (Chad would love the grunty sax) in place of one of the Art Pepper’s. “The Curtis Counce Group” is a classic also that could replace one of the Pepper’s.
    Other titles that could replace a couple of the Arts, Webster poor sounding recording, Hummes or the repeat Way Out West:
    Joe Henderson “Relaxin At The Camarillo”
    Joe Gordon “Lookin’ Good!”
    Bob Cooper “Coop!”
    “The Arrival Of Victor Feldman (say what one will but this is a really good album)
    Benny Golson “New York Scene”
    Harold Land “In The Land Of Jazz”
    The best Chico Freeman, Barney Kessel any of those artists and albums that have not gotten the audiophile treatment before would be excellent choices.
    Spread the Pepper’s out. No artist should get three spots. Especially one that has gotten so much exposure the last 10-15 yrs in audiophile. Or an Art Pepper that has never been done which is amazing: “No Limit”
    A note on the Webster title…
    *“At The Renaissance” is one of the weaker titles as far as sound. The Fantasy 45 Series is about as good as sound will get without some sort of digital intervention.
    Quote from the Fantasy 45 2002 sticker:
    “"This is a live, direct-to-two-track analog recording with no overdubs. As such, there are a few slight audible glitches. Most notably, you will hear a zip or scratching sound at several points on the "Stardust" track, most notably at times 1:54, 2:00, 5:38, 6:22, 9:20 and 10:12.”
    Maybe Bernie with 22 yrs of advances in tech can clean that track up, I dont know. Even if it was cleaned up it is still not a great sounding recording and bringing it back to an audiophile edition seems a weak choice.
    Having said that, the music is wonderful and the Fantasy 45 is over $200.00. I think this is a Chad favorite also.
    Here is one that would be interesting…
    How about Cecil Taylor’s “Looking Ahead”? Just as important as Ornette’s “Shape Of Jazz To Come” imo and not out there at all. Also more Phineas please!
    Finally, I cannot imagine that the Hawe’s “All Night Session!” volumes will not get a boxset. So should the Manne. If Ornette can get a box then so should these classics.
    My next list to be done by AP/Craft of Contemporary…
    Jimmy Wood “Awakening” mono (soulful not too out”
    Red Mitchell-“Presenting Red Mitchell” (for the win on the standard straight ahead old school bop)
    Jimmy Deuchar “Pub Crawling” (has that grunty sax and very accessible)
    Curtis Counce- Curtis Counce Group (fantastic album. This needs to come out)
    Shelly Manne And His Men- Vol 1 (or Vol. 2 of the Blackhawk stuff if no boxset. Manne did some great other Contemporary titles also though. A few to choose from)
    Joe Gordon- “Lookin’ Good!” (Rare as hens teeth and very good album)
    Art Pepper- “No Limit” (smokin album)
    Prince Lasha-“Firebirds” (needs to come out since we are getting “The Cry”)
    Hampton Hawes- “The Green Leaves Of Summer” (sparse but very night time album. Grear stuff. Or Vol 1 of the All Night Sessions. Though I think the volumes deserve a box set)
    Joe Henderson- “Relaxin At The Camarillo” (a live one for the win)
    Throw in the best Barney Kessel, Phineas and Chico, that would be a killer reissue set imo. Enough with so much Art, Evans and repeats of most popular titles. Get us the hard stuff that costs $200-300.00 on the secondary market.
    Sounds like I am griping, but I am actually very pleased with this last list. Just hope they continue next year with over half the titles being some of the more rare, yet awesome, Contemporary titles.

      Agreed, those are all great titles. I might add Carl’s Blues unless that’s what you’re referring to with the Curtis Counce group, as well as the elusive Teddy Edwards’ Good Gravy

    Ur enthusiasm for reissues when you already have so many originals makes me know the reissues I’ve been buying in Australia are a good call . We must surely be living in the second golden age of jazz records .
    Finding original pressing late 50’s /early 60’s jazz titles in Australia is impossible. Finding Reissues are not so easy but that’s the price we pay out here .

    Damn you! I watched Chad’s video giving the lineup release of the Contemporary release schedule and nothing excited, but now watching your video you have made over of these release seem very attractive and are going to cost me a lot of money.

    I agree with you that the HiFi Jazz cover of The Fox looks great. But by any chance have you heard that green label Contemporary reissue? To me it sounds many times better than the OG. And it demonstrates how mastering engineers and their equipment can have a 'house sound.' It sounds so much like Contemporary titles, even though it was recorded at Radio Recorders.

    I am wondering how the packaging of Way Out of West will look like. If it’s a gatefold, I’d prefer it against the boxset version.

    Hey, I found Imagination by The Curtis Fuller Sextet (US release with the alt cover) and im wondering if you know from what year the pressing is. Looking at the price it has been sold for, i think its an Og or very early one but there is no date on discogs.
    Anyways, i found it for €12 lol

    😊😅I have a question not related to this particular video that I hope you can answer. How can Blue Note Records come out with the same album, Lou Donaldson’s “Alligator Bogaloo” BST 84263 in 2019 and list it as a 80 Reissue Series and now it’s listed on their site as a Classic Series Reissue? I have both versions and they are identical🤔The one I just received has a Blue Note Classic Series Hype sticker with a Made in Germany sticker on the back. Both Acoustic Sounds and Discogs have it listed as a 80 Series Reissue. Both jackets are identical with Kevin Gray Cohearant Mastering.🤔I would appreciate if you had an answer. Thanks for the great video!

    • @jazzvinylcollector
      @jazzvinylcollector  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 80th anniversary series and the classic series are synonymous. One is a continuation of the other. If they are marketing it as different, the only difference should be that hype sticker and it would be if they did a new pressing run of it. Now, if you have 75th anniversary series of a title, that would definitely be different from either the 80th or Classic series.

    • @christopherbarker181
      @christopherbarker181 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jazzvinylcollector I knew that the 75th was different and I came to that opinion about the 80th and the Classic and I appreciate the conformation. 🤔

    Im guessing the Jackpot is the Undercurrent? I hope it will sound better than the Mofo silver label and the problems with the recording solved. Not sure if it was due to the mix or just not well recorded. Cant recall. Its just not one of the best sounding lps in past reissues other than the japanese pressing and original.
