Found this channel in my recommended and didn't realise it was part of the TronicsFix Extended Universe :D I love restoration videos! Been restoring and (recently) working on documenting stuff as well so that it's there for those who come after us! Keep up the good work!
That plate is specific part used to attach a Model 1 Genesis to a Model 2 Sega CD. The Model 2 Genesis fit without the adapter plate. Older electronics like this are usually (fairly) bulletproof. I'd be surprised if it needs much more than some PCB cleaner and electrical contact cleaner. Any socketed chips probably need to be removed and cleaned.
So satisfying as always to watch. Sega Genesis was my favorite system growing up. The CD version was so cool but I wanted to save up for the 32X and Dreamcast during that time. Glad you did a nostalgic gaming console to change it up.
For the surface rust on metal, if you haven't, try Barkeeper's Friend. I use it at work on commercial equipment for cleaning it off. It's some strong stuff, but worth it.
Only problem I remember having with my old Sega Setup (had the whole thing, Genesis, 32x and SegaCD) was the CD portion, the lid didn't like to sit right so the disc would have trouble spinning, had to hang it off the edge and use a clamp to put just the right amount of downward pressure on it.
You would have likely been fine to immerse the top for a short amount of time. That light looks like an LED, and the lens effectively pots the semiconductor element of the LED. If the flood waters didn’t seep inside, your short immersion isn’t either. I ultrasonically clean boards with LEDs frequently, and haven’t had any issues with water getting inside them. (I do, of course, make sure the board is dry before powering up.)
The RF modulator (the video plug you used) is very delicate and bad quality in general. There might be some more rust and debris inside. My advice would be to use the AV signal, which is more reliable and higher quality. All things considered, the console seems to work fine, just remember to plug the "mixing cable", which is a requirement to use both the Genesis and Sega CD audio at the same time. To test the disc reader, you can just burn a random game image into a disc, the Sega CD was too basic at the time to have copy protection. If you want to only test the audio functionality you can also use a regular audio CD.
I love Sega CD. I had 2 Sega CD. At now, I have played Sega CD games using Kegafusion emulator! Tomcat Alley, Road Avenger, Time Gal, Revenge of the Ninja , Supreme Warrior, Soul Star....are my favorites games!
Impressive work on the cleaning! Love the attention to detail. I am afraid though that there is something wrong with the genesis it self, on mine (european MD2) it always boots the cartridge when present and does not show the MegaCD boot screen.
I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the cartridge or if it's an issue with the Genesis, but the system should boot the cartridge. Cartridges get priority over discs. There's also probably an issue with the video plug. It might be bad solder joints or possibly a bad connection in the plug itself.
Nice work. If using vinegar, try to neutralize with soda/NaOH solution immediately after taking it out. Then go ahead and rinse/wd40. Vinegar treatment doesn't last too long. It also actually strips the protective coating off the rest of the piece as well. The wd40, as a permanent coating, is too volatile to depend on. I'm sure you'll figure how to replace it with something more sustainable. All the best
It fired up and might be able to be fully saved. Please be careful plugging those things in. I highly advise against it, because of things that can go wrong. So , food for thought. Thanks for making this video and teaching me other things.
Have you ever considered picking up a blast cabinet for the metal parts? Sand blasting them would give a better finish and you wouldn’t be getting high on vinegar fumes. 😵💫
If you're putting pressure on a connector and it works, I'd look for broken solder joints. Probably reflow the solder on the connectors and ot would work
Expected it to still work, except for connectors and the CD drive/cartridge slot maybe. I mean I've seen a C64 mainboard that was revived after 3 years in a pond.
Shouldnt ever try devices in that state,it could damage it. Next time use tartaric acid to remove rust, mix it with water, let the parts inside the mixture and check after some hours or leave it from one day to the other.removes all rust from metal.
Sold my Super Nintendo and bought a sega cd day one. Tray loading model. I think it came with a Sherlock Holmes fmv type game and sylpheed I think? Been a couple years. Wish I still had it but I’ve been collecting the mini consoles since Nintendo released the classic.
The light is just a diode and I cleaned one of these and the water didn't seem to do anything to it. Then again, I only did it under running water and a toothbrush.
Heck with thay vinegar. I cant stand the smell of any vinegar at all. Gives me headaches. What about evaporust? Never used it so dont know what kind of smell it has but see lot of people use it.
Tech here. You can submerge the circuit board in soapy water and scrub away. Just take the battery off first. As long as there's no power going through it, it won't do any damage. I've saved many a board/component with a good deep clean. It just needs to dry out _really_ well afterward.
I had one of these mint new in box all kinda add-ons and like 30 games new in box my mom sold it at a garage sale for $5 because it was just some one video game my ataris went the same way

Thanks! Glad to hear about your passion for restoration. Keep it up!
Also occasionally theyll do a live, including tronics wife, Tronicsfix and restortish ❤
The "washer" on the wires is actually a ferrite ring which is used to filter EMI/RFI noise.
you plugged it in before cleaning it? I wouldn't have done that. most obvious risk with that is moisture trapped inside.
yep. what a noob lol
The water prob evaporated tho
@Karatekid_9000 I wouldn't risk it. Especially when know you're opening it up and cleaning it out anyway
@@FINNIUSORIONI tried turning on my cell phone when it got submerged in water and got it to work later
I was thinking that too

Awesome job that thing looked great after. Can’t believe it actually fired up
Yeah, I was surprised too! Can't wait to see if Steve can get it playable again.
You did a great job and it is very interesting watching these kinda things you give these products a new life
I love everything about this channel. The console turned out looking great afterwards. Awesome content.
The solder joints on the power connector break on the genesis consoles. Also the regulator can cause intermittent power problems from the same reason.
POV: Kirby with fingers takes apart a Sega Genesis

I have both those in my bedroom. Perfectly working.
and you're playing lunar 2 like you're supposed to right
Amazing job, Robert! And for it to actually start up after you finished, I was not expecting that.
I wonder how many consoles old & new have been landfilled due to resent US floods this year(2024)
Yeah that is an interesting thought. Hopefully the growing interest in console restoration helps somewhat.
If you follow Clint from LGR you know that his collection alone makes for a huge number of electronics affected by climate change this year.
Amazing work attempting to resurrect this amazing gaming console system - :)
I really enjoy watching you and Steve's channels! I learn a Lot!
I was also interested in the mud from a sedimentary perspective 😂 Great job! Looking forward to seeing what Steve does with it next
Such an amazing resto, fantastic work to getting it to look after the clean
Great job on this - must be fun to clean
Great work and a happy new year 🙂
Yes they had a little bit of a problem with the wires being connected in the back😅
You should play Popful Mail with this restored beauty!
Allahu akbar ❤
That before and after was amazing
I prefer to use liquid Vaseline spray, WD does the trick but over time it dries out and damages the plastic parts.

You can take the bulb out from the shell by pushing it out on both sides and you can always reinsert the bulb back.
There's a special place in the halls of Video Game Valhalla for those that keep these machines alive.

Something loose in the RF box. Also looks like the cartridge isn't working. The Sega CD intro comes up when there is no cartridge plugged in.
Wow 😳 what a transformation 👍👍

Giant Washer 3:45, that is a Ferrite Bead / RF choke to cut down on interference. BTW, I have the same system but complete mounting hardware....
Wow! Great job!

Happy new year ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great job cleaning it
It’s probably the solder joints on the power and connector points that have cracked and loosened.
The ”giant washer” is a ferrite core. It’s to reduce EMI :)
would love to see before and after short shots while the video is going on!
I love Sega CD. I had 2 Sega CD. At now, I have played Sega CD games using Kegafusion emulator! Tomcat Alley, Road Avenger, Time Gal, Revenge of the Ninja , Supreme Warrior, Soul Star....are my favorites games!
Awesome cleaning. Like new again.
incredible work
Wow really enjoyed thia video just subscribed 😀
Impressive work on the cleaning! Love the attention to detail. I am afraid though that there is something wrong with the genesis it self, on mine (european MD2) it always boots the cartridge when present and does not show the MegaCD boot screen.
Im gonna enjoy this one!!! Playing games under water!
all those blue thingies sticking out of the board just all messed together and mangled looking made me think there was no chance of it even booting up
I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the cartridge or if it's an issue with the Genesis, but the system should boot the cartridge. Cartridges get priority over discs. There's also probably an issue with the video plug. It might be bad solder joints or possibly a bad connection in the plug itself.
Good Job!
Wd40 isn't what you want to put on those rf shields. You either need to re plate them or give them a shot of primer and paint
the plastic welded part ob the ring you can heat them and cut them off and drill out the hols and put in nylon screws just a thought
Nice work. If using vinegar, try to neutralize with soda/NaOH solution immediately after taking it out. Then go ahead and rinse/wd40.

Have you tried electrolysis for gentle rust removal on the shielding? so satisfying!
Expected it to still work, except for connectors and the CD drive/cartridge slot maybe. I mean I've seen a C64 mainboard that was revived after 3 years in a pond.
I didn't, those capacitors are in very bad shape, one of them even corroded the board. They need to be replaced.
This was great. I used to have this. Question. If you see parts like the springs that seem to far gone do you ever replace them with new ones?
I put the springs in with the vinegar also, then hit them with the WD-40
@ ahh I see noice. Also is the a difference with wd 40 and bw 100 ?
Please make a follow-up video on this ❤
Good job

very nice!

I have the same setup. Except mine is a model 2 Genesis attached to the Sega cd.
I have my brothers old system and i don't remember any issues with rhe cables and connectivity.
The light is just a diode and I cleaned one of these and the water didn't seem to do anything to it. Then again, I only did it under running water and a toothbrush.
Nice one came up really well keep up the good work 🎉
Great video look very clean. I personally use a little WD40 on the shell.
Evaporust would work far better on those metal pieces. It hurting me watching that original coating get stripped by the vinegar
I'll look into that. Thanks!
How much you charge to clean console?
Make sure the power cord is the correct one, that will cause that problem!
Awesome it some what work still that’s a win for sure
How much would it cost to do a HDMI port replacement on Xbox series x
Só teve limpeza? não danificou nada?nenhum capacitor oxidado ou estragado?, seria Fake?.
Heck with thay vinegar. I cant stand the smell of any vinegar at all. Gives me headaches. What about evaporust? Never used it so dont know what kind of smell it has but see lot of people use it.
Steve will handle it!
I still have my original Sega Genesis
You're missing a support bracket it goes on to the mega cd2 and to support the original mega drive or genesis😮😮😮😮
Hurricane Helene was bad for NC.
That looks a model 1 sega genesis with a model 2 sega cd toy story in the cardtridge slot for sega genesis
These do not match, it's a Mega Drive 1 on to a Mega CD for a MegaDrive 2. Great job as usual!
Forgot to mention, thats a 1992 genesis.
Mega cd will not play with a cartridge in the mega drive slot.

If it's showing that screen, it's not seeing the cartridge
I had one of these mint new in box all kinda add-ons and like 30 games new in box my mom sold it at a garage sale for $5 because it was just some one video game my ataris went the same way
19:30 I think you forgot to put on those plastic stickers.
Dude you never had a sega like come on
I want to buy a sega cd again 😢
💎
nice cant wait to see him fit it lol
Walnut shell blast the metal rusted parts and nickle plate them
I just discovered the channel! Man , that was a fine job that you did.
This might sound silly but have you tried to use coca cola to remove rust?
U know the sega the sega cd and sega 32x all have separate power supplys lol
I actually tested the top chassis cover with the LED, soaking it for a day and it seemed fine and still illuminated after reassembly.
Wow looking at the before i think i just watched a Christmas miracle the dead have risen.😅
channel should be called rubbish.I should go throw dirt and mud on my tv and make a video how I miraculously save it!
U most definitely should!
why even risk turning it on before taking it apart?! you could have done permanent damage that wouldnt have been caused by the flood when it was off.
10 minutes in an ultrasonic would have done the trick
HERE UNDER 20 MINUTES
was 5$ now 300$
