  • In this video I attempt to make my own dimple foil impressioning tool using an old key and a small piece of cut off injector pin (you can also use piano wire). At the end of the video I give it a basic test.
    Enjoy!!!

    Wow! That was incredible. You have a engineering mind to think of that idea.
    If I had some of those foil blanks I’d give it a go. Thanks for sharing that brilliant idea 👍🦊

      I looked at the dimple foil impressioning kits and thought "I reckon I could do that with an old key. I have made a second key too that has the groove on the left for different locks. Those dimple foils can be made from cooking foil, not sure if that's what you call it in the US. Depending in the thickness depends on how many folds you have to make. Banggood do them at a decent price. You used to be able to get a box of 100 for around £3.60 but I think the price has gone up to just over £5. Still, a hundred foils would last a while.

      Roy Sammons Thanks. I may invest in a kit. 👍🦊

    That’s a really good idea, especially as the impression kits are quite expensive. Such a great project I think you will see quite a few people trying this. Have a great weekend Roy.

      Thanks Daz. Iii an surprised how well it worked, more locks to follow using it, maybe alongside the real deal.

      And it's not that hard to make your own foils too, to make it 100% home made : )

      I had foil impressioned several locks then thought to myself "i reckon a tweaked key would work the same".
      and apparently it is, WIN!
      Cheers Tinnie.

    I'd like to know how this works, I mean the theory. Richard Feynman said that things change for a person when they understand the difference between knowing and understanding. Most people who see this will know how to repeat what you did, but not understand why it is working. Like, would a heavier foil work better or worse, and why?

    • @roysammons2445
      @roysammons2445  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know there are two thicknesses of foils used in foil impressioning. This one is the slightly thinner foil. As the pins press down on the foil they start to sink in, as each pin in its chamber reaches its shear line it sets. when all the pins have set the lock opens.

    • @roysammons2445
      @roysammons2445  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Foils were bought from Banggood for around £4 to £5. You can make them but without the tool it's tricky.

      If you mean the piece that holds the foil in place then detract, it's a piece of an injector pin. Piano wire would do the same job. I get my piano wire on Ebay.

    It's easier to use aluminium foil tape.

    • @roysammons2445
      @roysammons2445  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's in my list of things to try. Do you take the backing off or leave it on and put it across the key?

      @@obijanjebrave Just watched your video which is a great demo on foil impressioning. Not sure it would work on the impressioning tool I made. Reason being you are using a dimple bump key which has holes for the pins to drop into. Then the foil would sit over the holes which would fall level with the highest cut pins. The dimple pins would then impression downwards into the foil.
      My home made key needs a slightly stiff foil to sit up off the key so the pins would impression into the foil. But you have inspired me to find a way to give ther foil tape a go.

    • @roysammons2445

      Not actually measured it. If you fold a good grade of kitchen foil four times that should work fine.
