@Redfur the Animator actually thank you. My son is 21. Has his own home, in management and is also a fulltime student. He's phenomenal. My daughter, is 16. Just finished her sophomore year in high school. She also already has 18 of the 22 credits needed to graduate in my state. She will be graduating in december. After her 1st semester as a junior. My kids are great. A father doesnt make or break if someone is a shitty parent.

So I am a crocheter and I decided to do the basic math for man hours x minimum wage.
If you say she crochets solely on that project from 9-5 (like a regular job) that’s 8 hours a day, then 2-4 weeks for the completion time, 8hr x 14 days = 112 hours or 8hr x 28 days = 224 hours. Multiply those with minimum wage in VA (and most states) $7.25. So if it’s 112 hours x $7.25 = $812 (not including the price of materials), if it took longer then 224 hours x $7.25 = $1,624. Add in just basic yarn materials and the grand total would come out being
*$972* - *$1,784*
So yeah you could say $400 for a queen sized 100% wool blanket in a complicated stitch would be totally worth it.

As an artist, I totally feel the crocheter and that interaction. People don't get the cost of labor and how much time and effort things take. Everyone just expects to pay the cost of supplies, if even that. They expect Wal Mart prices for everything.

I commissioned a lady to crochet a beautiful shawl I wanted to give to my aunt who was really looking for sick as a nice surprise for her in winter. The material had to be fairly light weight as she couldn't have anything too heavy on her shou shoulders. This lady gave me her quote which I actually thought was low. She made the shawl which came out perfectly and my aunt absolutely loved. I ended up giving the lady more money than she had quoted I was just so grateful for the job and the time and effort she put into it.

The struggle is SO REAL with people who don’t understand or respect the craft.
I make crochet dolls and I made one recently for someone. She never replied to my message when I sent her a photo of the finished doll so a few hours later I sent her a message asking if she still wanted it. ‘Oh yeah but I can’t pay yet,’ she replied. So I said ‘Oh it’s just that someone else has seen it and can pay me straight away.’
She simply came back with ‘Oh. Whatever.’
The other person is getting the doll as a gift as I know she’ll definitely appreciate it more.

The blanket story makes me cringe. I make scarves and blankets and have people trying to make me lower my prices on my items. Makes me upset.
Note I charge a reasonable price on scarves usually an average price of 15.
It is unfortunate but a lot of people don't understand that handmade items will always cost more. The most frequent response I've heard from someone asking for a cheaper price, is as the idiot in post said 'but blank store sells them for only blank'.
