Nowadays I feel like I am filmmaker more than a videographer because I am always involved with every project I have done from beginning to end. I never saw myself as cinematographer because I don't command a team. I am a videographer per se but I do lighting, audio, storyboards, everything. So I can't say I am just a videographer. So filmmaker fits me just fine.
I don't like to call myself a "content creator" because I feel like nowadays anyone who posts videos on tiktok or reels calls themselves a "content creator." I've worked on movie sets as the camera operator, made commercials, TH-cam videos, Tiktoks, but calling myself a content creator makes me feel like I'm putting myself at the bottom of the ladder.
"content creators" aren't in it for the art, they make content, and in the context of modern internet and entertainment, "content" is only a step above "garbage". I call myself a maker, because I make things, and stuff. Film, illustration, music, writing, I do it all, and my approach isn't always artistic but it's at least never for the sake of money.
@dordly lmao 🤣 "a step above garbage" had me rollen. I always got salty watching a talented kid with great impressive skills getting less attention than a girl staring in the camera saying "owew" & getting mills 🤦🏾♂️

I like to think of filmmaking as someone who works directly with film considering how a lot of movies are still shot using film. I think most people on TH-cam are just very good story tellers and good at teaching people information through digital making.
Aahhh that's a good take to that, I feel that. There's so much interpretation to it all but one thing ik for sure is if we enjoy it, that's all that matters lmao 🤣
Thanks for making this video and clarifying these terms. Honestly, as a film student, the misuse of filmmaker and cinematographer by a lot of content creators has urked me for a good year now. Because when I hear "filmmaker", I expect a story (no matter how long) and on Instagram reels and often TH-cam those "filmmakers" are just creating content and not a cohesive story. And same goes for the cinematography aspect. Just because a video looks cinematic doesn't necessarily mean it's cinematography. Like you mentioned cinematography is usually for film to help tell the story. Overall I think what you've said needs to be heard a lot more. Personally I out filmmakers on a higher level than videographers (because I've done and do both) because of the amount of time, planning, and work that needs to be done for short, feature, and documentary films as well as commercials compared to capturing nice looking b-roll (usually from an event). Both jobs and careers are great though and I love them both. I just hate the conflating of the terms and I'm glad someone like yourself is out there voicing a lot of the same things.
Man i appreciate your comment 🙏🏾, for the longest i surly miss used those titles. For sure IG, Tik Tok & TH-cam creators changed the prospects of what the titles stand for 😂
Great video! Although, the microphone is quite noticeable. I believe that confining ourselves to the title of ‘content creator’ limits our potential. Embracing a range of titles demonstrates our adaptability and breadth of skills.

I’ve been struggling to understand it and this video was it. I like labeling myself as a Content Creator because since I’m solo rn then I do all of it. I do the filmmaking roles, I record the videos, and also direct the specific shots I’m looking for in order to obtain cinematic shots with intention. Once I grow we’ll see which one will resonate with my personality but I think Filmmaking will be my thing and maybe have a team in the future. For now I’m a content creator.
For so long i struggled understanding this too 😵💫 Haha defenitly content creator makes it fast & direct on making videos for sure! Filmmaker also seems so align with us solo creators for sure haha!
WAGWAN BREDREN 🤙🏾 i don't hear it often from the filmmakers i seen around youtube but ik they there, haha just gotta find them! Appreciate you viben here ⚡️
For me personally a content creator is a term situated closer to videography while implementing sales strategies and market analysis. A discipline where it’s extremely valuable to chase the minimum viable product and bump up the frequency of content while lowering visual aspects in order to keep costs down. A friend of mine is a content creator for food products & apparel. He spends most of his time analyzing market trends and setting up strategies to ensure a determined number of interactions. He is on the phone with meta rather than with a director or actor. Also, he himself needs to act in front of the camera and take audiences on a sales-journey, packaging the USPs of products into something that seems like a travel video. He shoots exclusively on phones with wireless microphones and uses capcut for editing stuff on the fly. I’d say that this approach drastically differs to what a cinematographer or someone in film does. The calculation & sales strategies are a different department, products aren’t the main focus of a story and cinematographers fight to spend as much time on visuals and planning as they can. Accounting hates us 😂.
Thank you for this. I’m a content creator and a video editor. I’m delving into a bit of animation and incorporating AI into my work which you can check out on my page. I like the idea of cinematography cause it gives me a wider scope and more control of my work considering I’m a storyteller. It would also help to know how these lighting settings work when it comes to animation and Ai visualization. Since I’m already an editor, I believe it should be easier learning this. I’d rather do my shots from the idea conception than edit a videographers work of my project cause I might’ve wanted to tell the story a bit differently, but since there’s no visuals for that, I’d have to make due with what I have. Thank you for this break down. It was really needed.
That's so dope! Thanks for being here 🙏🏾, animation is definitely takes some skill time & understanding for sure but when your dedicated to it you got it ⚡️. I'm glad this video was able to help! Makes me happy to hear hahaha!
Awesome video man. I love the definitions and it's something I'm struggling to define myself. I'm not a big fan of the word "content" though. This video is content. I never know what the least cringe thing to tell someone I do is... Content creator is now the most apt title but still has a strange stigma attached and doesn't give the full picture. However, before that term, I'd use the Preditor descriptor (although not as funny as it once may have been) but also fits what we do most: produce and edit. Producing is both writing and recording and editing--which is what we tend to do more than even holding a camera. I think most people don't realize that content creators usually spend most of their time alone staring at an editing timeline... Or at least I do... So having a new title reflect that might be helpful. I just can't think of one yet... A "Content Preditor", a "Director of Content", an "Editoragrapher" ? They all just sound wrong. TBD Great video as always and got me thinking...
Lmao 😂 i like editorogtaphy, It's just so out of place that it makes it seem so new 🤣 I feel on that, tbh i like the sound of "director of content" thats sounds so dope & official. Hearing that makes me thing of someone who can create content for brands that be charging 2k for 6 videos within a month or so. Haha i am glad you vibed this video & i appreciate you always viben out with me ⚡️🤙🏾
Hi Tyski, I'm starting out in photography and I was curious about the terms of Film maker, Videographer and Cinematographer. I'm curretnly trying to upgrade my skills from being an average illustrator/designer.
@@Tyski_Ty Sure, it is. That's the point, I thought. ;-) For me as a German and referencing the "original" pronounciation which we were told, there's a difference. But I just wanted to mention it. ;-)
Honestly, there's so many words with synonyms in the english language that it becomes overwhelming educating or correcting some one about it 😮💨 Honestly i just use simple & longer direction of word choices to get my point across & away from bigger most needed broken down words 😆🙃
I don’t think a film maker at a wedding is only limited to shooting what happens, they can also have an input in giving some direction on the day. Also I find content creation limited, maybe you’re a visual story teller, a visual artist
Lol to be fair, I think most language's with different doilogs surly have their Mispronunciation 😂 i sure struggle with prounounciations & spelling till this day but aye 🤷🏾♂️ as long as we get it, we good ⚡️
I guess you could think of it this way 🤔 Q1) Do you want to create along with a team & work for a film production? Q2) do you want to have full control over the creation & run a business? A1) become a videographer or cinematographer, they seem to be dealing with grouod work the most A2) become a filmmaker or videographer, you can be in probably more balanced comtrol & could work directly with clients if thats your over all work goal Hope this helps 😅
This is a comment for everybody , what would be your advice to someone who has zero knowledge on videography and cammeras but wants to have a career in the field?
Something I thought of for myself when I got into it 1) gave myself a time-frame of finding the love for the craft! For me 4yrs (may be diff for you!) 2) once I found the passion & honed my Skills, I narrowed down how could I make a career out of it 3) spent 2 years trying all sorts of generas, new & familiar jobs that I could charge between $50 - $200 for the experiance & build up 4) trained myself mentally on how to think busniess, state my worth, stopped doing free & how to approach clients 5) once I locked into & passed those goals the only thing left was doing all my research how to amplify this work to keep it a full time job 6) from there now that I delt with the assest to it all, I can choose to work with a production team or just solo. I chose solo :) This may not been the best advice but they way I see it, a story of someone else's directive path on what they have done could lead to be an advise you can try to work around for yourself! I will say this, trial & error & studying your past moves with "if only I knew sooner" day dreaming, that'll be your biggest motivation for sure!
@@Tyski_Ty I am currently a freestyle dancer and I would say the taking your time to try different genres and find out what works well for you is something I resonate with and will do the same once I start my videography and content creation journey. Thank you for sharing and will for sure come back to this.
@nasa4329 oh let's goooo! Dance life is lit 🫡 breaking is my style lol. Yes I feel that, no need to rush...🤔 well unless your really trying to change positions in careers in an instant lol then taking the best online learning class would sort out. I'm too broke for classes 😪 so I did 70% of learning my self with research/trial & error. The other 30% came from the schools I went back then that offered cinematography hahaha
Great work!! I was going to make something like this. You got my sub! I have a question to all viewers : Do you say Videographer or Video-ographer??? I have always gotten a kick out of this one. I feel like I will start calling photographers , Photo-ographers now because why not.
Much appreciate 🙏🏾 yes do so!!! Hahaha I end up saying videographer but i spell it slow as if i say video-ographer hahaha (slow & terrible speller 😵💫)
Thanks so much for this! I’m an Editor but now getting more videography offers. But I don’t think the client even understands the ‘videographer’ term themselves. They call it videographer but expect us to storyboard, generate ideas, shoot and edit ALL. How to tackle to get them to give you the right credits for such projects? It’s messing with me
Thanks for being here 🤙🏾 i feel that cause I've seen so many times clients ask me to do way more than whats offered. Now these days i explain to them what the roles are & what i charge for so im doing the right work for the right price
I disagree you can call yourself a cinematographer in wedding, simply because a wedding is not really cinema and a cinematographer serves for storytelling purposes

What about someone who does the camera for live singing, dance videos or music videos? Would you call them videographer?
I'd think so if you weren't planning on editing them & it's given to another team of editors.
Ik that position would be a camera operator lol
TBD
Great video as always and got me thinking...
Lmao 😂 i like editorogtaphy, It's just so out of place that it makes it seem so new 🤣
I feel on that, tbh i like the sound of "director of content" thats sounds so dope & official. Hearing that makes me thing of someone who can create content for brands that be charging 2k for 6 videos within a month or so.
Haha i am glad you vibed this video & i appreciate you always viben out with me ⚡️🤙🏾
@@Tyski_Ty maybe...
"Director of Content-ography" then?
Either way, great stuff, easy to vibe with!
Hahaha explaining that to a potential client im sure would get you a 2k deal 🤣
Regardless always appreciate that 💯
Well explained man !
Yyooo thank you appreciate that 🫡
Hi Tyski, I'm starting out in photography and I was curious about the terms of Film maker, Videographer and Cinematographer. I'm curretnly trying to upgrade my skills from being an average illustrator/designer.
Which ever direction you choose, hone in to that craft & you'll be fine after trial & error, research, studying & practice! You got this!
I would say there is a slight difference between "there", "their" and "they're" and they don't sound the same.
It's probably based on how it's pronounced 🤔
@@Tyski_Ty Sure, it is. That's the point, I thought. ;-) For me as a German and referencing the "original" pronounciation which we were told, there's a difference. But I just wanted to mention it. ;-)
Honestly, there's so many words with synonyms in the english language that it becomes overwhelming educating or correcting some one about it 😮💨
Honestly i just use simple & longer direction of word choices to get my point across & away from bigger most needed broken down words 😆🙃
I don’t think a film maker at a wedding is only limited to shooting what happens, they can also have an input in giving some direction on the day.
Also I find content creation limited, maybe you’re a visual story teller, a visual artist
Oh of course, at the end of the day its just based off making the wedding look good haha
Aahh i like story teller too
Thanks to this now I know the correct term to call myself, a budding videographer. So what do you call a photographer and a videographer?
Hahaha such a vibe ⚡️ I'd assume a phoivographer at this point 🤣
👏👏👏👏👏👏
🙏🏾⚡️
In the spirit of just trying to better everyones understanding, it's pronounced "video-grapher" not "video-ah-grapher".
Lol to be fair, I think most language's with different doilogs surly have their Mispronunciation 😂 i sure struggle with prounounciations & spelling till this day but aye 🤷🏾♂️ as long as we get it, we good ⚡️
Please next year will be going to media school to learn about camera . So please which one is best
I guess you could think of it this way 🤔
Q1) Do you want to create along with a team & work for a film production?
Q2) do you want to have full control over the creation & run a business?
A1) become a videographer or cinematographer, they seem to be dealing with grouod work the most
A2) become a filmmaker or videographer, you can be in probably more balanced comtrol & could work directly with clients if thats your over all work goal
Hope this helps 😅
Thanks plea
Thanks please
You made it so well that you focused on the video.
From korea😅
I try & appreciate that 🤙🏾
This is a comment for everybody , what would be your advice to someone who has zero knowledge on videography and cammeras but wants to have a career in the field?
Something I thought of for myself when I got into it
1) gave myself a time-frame of finding the love for the craft! For me 4yrs (may be diff for you!)
2) once I found the passion & honed my Skills, I narrowed down how could I make a career out of it
3) spent 2 years trying all sorts of generas, new & familiar jobs that I could charge between $50 - $200 for the experiance & build up
4) trained myself mentally on how to think busniess, state my worth, stopped doing free & how to approach clients
5) once I locked into & passed those goals the only thing left was doing all my research how to amplify this work to keep it a full time job
6) from there now that I delt with the assest to it all, I can choose to work with a production team or just solo. I chose solo :)
This may not been the best advice but they way I see it, a story of someone else's directive path on what they have done could lead to be an advise you can try to work around for yourself!
I am content creator then 😂💙
Hahaha 🤣
So I would be considered a film maker/videographer.
As long as you deem it to be ⚡️💎😄
As long as you deem it to be ⚡️💎😄
Great work!!
I use a mobile camera, so I'm all of them😂
Hahaha hail yeah make moves ⚡️🙌🏾
I'm a storyteller.
Vibes 💯
Thanks so much for this! I’m an Editor but now getting more videography offers. But I don’t think the client even understands the ‘videographer’ term themselves. They call it videographer but expect us to storyboard, generate ideas, shoot and edit ALL. How to tackle to get them to give you the right credits for such projects? It’s messing with me
Thanks for being here 🤙🏾 i feel that cause I've seen so many times clients ask me to do way more than whats offered.
Now these days i explain to them what the roles are & what i charge for so im doing the right work for the right price
you just gained a new subscriber
Word 🫡 appreciate that !! 💯
I disagree you can call yourself a cinematographer in wedding, simply because a wedding is not really cinema and a cinematographer serves for storytelling purposes
Truly can once the clients hear your label as that for sure 🚀
Cine photographer😂😂
😮💨 if only you'd see how many words i can miss spell on a daily 🫣😆 still transfers to speech haha
@@Tyski_Ty 😁 i like it G
You got cinematographer correct everywhere in text, but throughout the whole video you said cinephotographer instead.
thats the Patois (or Patwa) in me honestly
Did you say cine-photographer?
I shifted words alot 💯🫣
Hahaha 🍁☁️ all vibes !
Filmmaker
Lets gooooo ⚡️🤙🏾
Did you say cinematographer or cinephotographer??😂
My description explains plains that 🤔🚀💯
im Filmmaker
Oh, word! How's the creative fun treating you? Do you create for yourself or clients too? 🙌🏾
