This trip was so special to me since I was raised in the Ave of the Giants. My Dad was a timber faller when it was 1st Growth Redwood. I worked at the Pacific Lumber Co. when it was thriving. Both Lumber and Fishing aren't the same so a lot of us left for better jobs. The small community with the Eel River running thru it has turned to weed farms so we don't go back. The visitors center at Burlington was mostly built by my cousin who was a historian but passed a few years ago. My parents are buried in Fortuna. Now at 84 yrs of age I won't go back but I can always pull up your video and think of home and happy times. Will never forget the smell of the redwoods.
I live in Southern California and, of course, we have no giant redwoods down here. California io huge and has so much beauty to offer. Thank you, Russ, for all of your well filmed travels. I am older and love to travel through your eyes. Thanks again!
Enjoyed this road trip. I was born in Arcata and my wife was raised 36 miles from Garberville in Alderpoint. Garberville was her "big" town as a kid. I worked in the redwood lumber industry for 8 years in the 60's and 70's. When I was a kid, the Avenue of the Giants WAS Hwy. 101.
I might be an oddball but i love this place better outside of summer. I came once in late april and it was glorious. The rain, the fog, the gloom, it all added to the ambiance of the redwoods. It almost feels weird in the summer because its so dry
You're so fun to travel with, Russ. I went through the Redwoods when we were little, so I'm excited to see them again. Thanks for packing us in your van, lol.
Utah, Nevada, California and now Oregon. As always will be hard to decide what will be my favorite video on this epic trip. On your walks didn't hear birds singing or other critters running around. Glad you explain what those green boxes were. Will enjoy the drive up the coast. Drive safe and keep up the great videos Russ. Thank You!
My husband has been a subscriber for a while & now me too :) This video reminded us of a trip we did about 6 years ago heading up the same way and places you're going. We didn't get to check out places as much as we would have liked at the time as we had other plans. You inspired us to take another trip up there in a couple weeks to check out all we didn't get to last time.
Great video Russ! I know there are a lot of things not to like about California, but on the other end of things you have places like this. The beauty is just absolutely stunning! Thank You so much for letting us go along with you! Safe Travels , Man!
Wait until you get to Jedediah Smith state park up North. They filmed Star Wars return of the Jedi there I Live about an hour and 35 minutes from there
My commute was The Avenue and 101 every day B-E-A-U-T-FUL!!! I'll be watching this a few more times. The Reservations are amazing also. We lived in Wetchipec on the Res....SALMON ,SALMON AND MORE SALMON!!!!
Russ the redwood forest is the most beautiful forest I've ever seen. I never got the chance to visit the Sequoias so I thoroughly enjoyed your video! Thank you so much.
Wow Russ those Redwoods were great! Thank you walking in that Giant forest! Wonderful! And thanks for taking us on the peninsula! The ocean was great! I love forward to Oregon too!❤️😀🇺🇸
26 years ago maybe more ,oops🤦 my wife and I took our honeymoon drive in my semi tractor-trailer (53Ft) on that road. they don't let you do that anymore, but I did it great video Russ.😊 Approximately 32 story homes can be built from one gigantic Redwood tree
Your cover photo on youtube, (the one with yellow text),..looked like a view master national park slide minus the 3d, beautiful. Remember those? One of my favorite toys growing up. That's where I learned about this place btw. Beautiful. Yup, the redwood forest sucks up sound but if you shout it sounds like you're in a cavern of some kind. Stayed at the visitor center campground once by showing up early and they found me a cancellation space. But with so many people, it may not be for everyone. Bathroom use and getting around isn't always easy. The campfire show was really good though. Another good one. Wish I was there but just can't afford the fuel for our rv out west anymore. So we'll travel here virtually for now. Cheers.!
When I was a little girl my aunt had a Viewmaster that took reels with pics of different places. We had two reels of pics of the redwoods including the one the road goes thru. My aunt never liked to go much of anywhere so I suspect those reels were her way of seeing the USA without having to leave home. Don't know if that little device is still available but for a kid with disabled parents it sure gave me a chance to see the country. Thank you for the memories and so much more as I have never been able to travel the way I'd like to.
The unique thing about your arrival in Eureka is that you had clear blue skies. I worked them for six months one summer and the locals rated the summer by how many days they saw the sun.
Even in the summer you wont see too much sun in Eureka, heading south to Weott you will see lots of sun. I use to live in Myers Flat, because like they use to say, Myers Flat is where its at.
I'm so grateful you're doing this seeing the redwoods has always been on my bucket list but I don't think I'll ever get so see them but thanks to you I was able to soak up the atmosphere and get a feel of what it'd be like to walk amongst them :)
Thank you for bringing us along!!☆☆☆☆ What a treat! That travel log traiker was just amazing.. of my goodness.. that would be awesome to call in at any rv park! ☆☆☆ you bet! So cool! Thanks again.. We really look forward to you videos ❤
@@susanspatz9501 After attending Arcata High in 1960, I went to 4 more high schools in various locations before graduating in 1964 from Riverton High in Wyoming.
Thank you Russ these videos means so much to me I will soon be on the highway I got to see it for myself but until then safe travels and keep up the videos I certainly enjoy them thank you God bless
Nice video. It too brings back memories of the summer of 1975 when my parents and I were working our way home to Phoenix from Portland. The redwood forest looks much the same. LOL! However, I couldn't remember the visitor center. Then you showed us the photos. The visitor center didn't open until 1980, which explains why I don't recall seeing it in 1975. We also passed through Eureka. It was a much smaller town back then, but we didn't spend much time there as we were on our way to the Redwood Forest..
Downtown 5th street is way different now then it was in the 70's. I lived right across from Vern's furniture in 1977. Also when they put in the different malls it ruined the downtown area that use to have all kinds of shops, like J.C. Penney, and many others.
Russ, try Del Norte Coastal Redwoods state park sometime. The most beautiful campground you'll ever stay in. Crescent City CA. On your route. Drop in and take a peek.
We'll be following in your footsteps! We're about a week or so behind you coming out of SoCal! Headed up the coast for the same reason - it's too hot anywhere else!! Safe travels!
We used to drive up and down Highway (not the) 101 but it's been about 18 years since our last trip. You video has brought back nice memories. Too bad you missed Ferndale.
thanks for the memories , i rode my bike last year with some friends from garberville to the border and back . the redwoods were amazing on a bike, i was suprised how hard it was to find a donut shop on the coast. not those fuu fuu pastry shops !
Awesome tour of the redwoods! Russ, when you get to Oregon, checkout Winchester Bay. In 2007 we stayed in an Rv park on a peninsula.. the fish and chips were fresh and delicious! Br safe!
Hi ya Russ! Please tell me what vehicle you drive. Is it has or diesel? You have placed a number of miles on it without issues!! I’m looking for a new one! Would you but it again??
Amazing! We meet again. We may have passed each other on the 101. I went to Ft. Bragg for a couple of days, then visited the drive through tree in Leggett. I spent almost a week in Eureka visiting family. Remember me? We met in Saligman at the car show. I live in Mohave county. Love your channel.
Learning that California gas, even in small California towns, is $5.99/gallon, according to a sign in your video. I might have expected that in a huge town with public transportation options, but I didn't expect that where people have to drive everywhere to meet their basic needs. Thank you for this recent trip. I am enjoying going with you!
Loved this video! We were in this area in 2018. Trees of Mystery also has a "tree-top" gondola that we enjoyed. Klamath has the Drive-Thru Tree and the Prairie Creek Park Byway is the no brainer alternative to highway 101!
Been 50 yrs since been in this neck of the woods (62). Live in Calif. but those Gas prices.....................Nobody on 101, surprising. No Fog, you got lucky as did the viewers, never made it to that island in Eureka, would have remembered that, did go to Trees of Mystery. Neat RV Park there. 1 massive fog bank sitting out there.
In the U.K. we have over 500,000 giant sequoias dotted about the country. Usually near victorian stately Houses. They were planted buy rich victorians to show status

Sad the Rivers' almost dried up....My Daughter was the very last one to be born in Garberville, school in Miranda . Lived in Shelter Cove.....We were able to watch the whales migrate twice a year in Whale Gulch...
I wish you would use your Google maps attractions setting. You're missing some of the most spectacular scenery. Like Rockefeller Forest/Founder's Grove on the Ave of the Giants...

Awesome!
❤ amazing awesome beautiful too cool for school thank you for sharing❤
You're right about "weed farms" the loss of fishing and lumbering has made it difficult for coastal communities.
They need to clean up some of the debris. It would look a lot better. They do it all over Europe, and therefore, and it looks so nice.
this is as close as I`ll ever be to these places. I sincerely want to thank you for sharing your trips.

I have an 80 foot coastal Redwood in my front yard here in Encino Los Angeles. Yay👍
Thanks, Russ!
My favorite park in California
Humboldt!! 🌲👣😍

I went to high school in Arcata, just north of Eureka in 1960. Haven't been back to that area since the early 80's...........thanks for showing me.
I graduated at Fortuna High in 1970.

Thank you Russ these videos means so much to me I will soon be on the highway I got to see it for myself but until then safe travels and keep up the videos I certainly enjoy them thank you God bless
When you cut down a redwood tree you get a whole ring of "daughters" that grow back. Amazing!

I love the Redwoods. We haven’t been up there in years. Only 2 hours away from us. Time for a drive. Thank you 🌲
Gorgeous trees. I'm glad that they decided to save the redwoods and not develop the land. Magnificent ocean. Holy cow, California's gas is expensive!
Hope you go thru Florence Oregon, brother in law runs Best Western Motel there. Beautiful place❤
This is just a great set of videos. Thanks for sharing these and I am really looking forward for more videos. Thanks again Russ for bringing us along.
Love those trees. Excellent ride along. Thanks. 🙏👍
