Boy this video tugged on my ❤. I've been to Astoria once & went to that museum with my mom & sister. Its sad to look @ it now & think last time i was there, my mom was alive. Sigh! 😢
I am so pleased you decided to stop here. The museums were great, so informative. I also like how you keep the camera on the story boards so that I can read them. I live in Cairns Australia and somehow missed that someone rowed the pacific from the west coast of the United States. I don't know what I was doing that day but I'm sorry I missed his arrival.
Astoria has to be one of the most beautiful highlights of the Oregon Coast. One, is the position of where it's located as a major shiippng destination right at the top of the coast before going into Washington That bridge over the Columbia is iconic, I haven't seen any other like it.! You really showed Astoria in the most accurate way, capturing it's true essence with some fantastic footage. it looks like some of which is from your side cams.. Great descriptions and museum features...I can"t wait to see the rest of the summer series.
I have crossed the bar many times and have had some real hair raising times. I never told my wife about the adventures then a Portland news cast started with a picture of the bar and stated the Graveyard of the Pacific. She freaked a little. Everytime we went out we saw a Coast Guard rescue. Thanks for the trip and memories.
We must have just missed you...we were there about the same time meeting up with my sister and BL who were taking a cruise and debarked at the museum pier. They live in Minnesota.
My name is Christopher Johanson - the picture is my wife Patricia. Back in the mid to late 70's I worked on the Peacock and Capt. Plumley and I was close friend. I was a teenager in High School and Gradated in 1979 - While in High School I worked part time and full time after I graduated. This was a great time in my young life and enjoyed serving on the Peacock and the Columbia Bar Pilot Boats! The saddest time was when I got a call that the Peacock was in a extremely powerful storm and helping a cargo ship in and the Peacock was coming back in and Capt. Dickenson was at the wheel when a large wave came up and the ship began to surf the large wave. All at once the wave collapsed and the Peacock Plunged bow first and the ship went under water and rolled a few times! So for a short time it was like a sub and that's why it's built like a sub because to withstand this type of situation! Capt. Dickinson fought and held on that Wheel trying to keep the ship at the right direction so it wouldn't sink! For his bravery he managed to keep the ship alive and the men safe but for him he had extreme injuries that became fatal! When I got to the Pilot office and waited for the ship to come in and when I saw the ship you could tell it survived a horrible storm! The ship was battered and the paramedics carried Capt. Dickenson off the ship and at that point he was still alive. It was sad because Capt. Plumley + Capt. Dickenson would have me go over the bar them. We had so much fun and watching the towering waves while going to help a ship in! Now there was going to be one less Columbia River Bar Pilot and it was a great loss! After that the Peacock went to the dry docks for repairs and Capt. Plumley had me work on the Peacock at the Drydock! I remember when I was organizing the shop area and going through old boxes I found the original Peacock plate. It was solid brass and severely tarnished and as a surprise I cleaned it up like new and gave it to Capt. Plumley as a gift - They all thought this original plate was lost forever and he was so surprised I found it! While at dry dock I hung it up on the bridge of the Peacock and I hope it's still there! I would love to go on that ship to see if it's still there! I know every inch of that ship - Even the Bilge where there is a Hatch at the front with a latter going down. It's a dirty place I know I cleaned it out a few times! I hope you read this because this ship was part of my own history and one that I loved!!
Great vlog❤️ always love the museums ❤️ great scenery ❤️ Astoria is a cool place 😎 I remember when they use to pump gas at every station. I had not been use to that since I was a kid 😁 hope you have a Happy Halloween 🎃 👻
The blue boat backing into the dock is Triumph II, a launch service vessel. They take inspectors out to the ships at anchor in the river, once successfully inspected they can proceed up river if a pier space is available
Your travel through Oregon is another for the record books. That blimp hanger in last week’s video immense. It reminded me of a military base I was one which had a large building similar but it would have fit inside the building you listed. Yes, Astoria has a lot to offer with both museums and the history that was persevered. Enjoy your trip into Washington State. I have friends who live in that state up north from where you will be visiting. Equal bridge height is The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. That bridge used to give me the willies going across.
Astoria Oregon Kind of just a Littls bit reminds me of Duluth Minnesota I live in Minnesota and visit Duluth I really want too visit Astoria though it is Beautiful. And goonies town haha.
I lived in Astoria some of those abandoned piers were the foundations for Bumblebee Tuna before it burned down. And the Main Road is actually backfill the river used to reach the edges of the hill before Astoria boomed. There's a lot of history in that town YT would probably delete if I mentioned it here.
Russ, I'm not a fan of canned salmon either. On the other hand, I love smoked salmon--I got some in Astoria from Josephson's Smokehouse and it was delicious 🙂So, now you're headed east along the Columbia River...it should be a lot of fun!
My husband was Navy and served 1959-1960 in Astoria. I’m wondering at the area of the museum is where the base was. I’m really enjoying your time in Astoria.
I once forgot Oregon had attendants coming into Medford after just coming down off siskiyou pass, I touched the forbidden gas handle and boy did the attendant let me have it. "You ain't in California anymore", he barked. It startled me big time. I still thought Oregon's policy was kind of cool but even many locals hated it. I once worked as a gas station attendant as a teenager but never barked at anyone, lol. The Astoria-megler bridge is one of the most beautiful bridges anywhere in our opinion. Unlike cali and other states where bridge tolls will go into perpetuity and continue raising rates, the Astoria bridge was paid off early and became free in 93. Good on Oregon. Cheers. 👍
@ Yeah. It's a recent change. Half my family was born in Oregon and I've been traveling through it since the 60's and the gas attendant pumping your tank always threw me off when making my first fuel stop coming in. Mandatory pump service is still in a few areas from what I hear. I don't know the details. Cheers.
When that big quake happens & that huge tsunami comes...God be with all those people! I rather live in AZ 🏜 anyday than Central Oregon 🤧🥶❄️⛈️. Getting older & painful bones don't like the fall & long winters. Funny i didnt like the bridge either cuz I'm afraid of heights. Luv the Redwoods, its like another world those huge trees
i hate watching museums , i just want you to keep on trucking and show us beauty of america natural beauty . oregon is so beautiful .it does nt need artificial beauty such as museums .
Oregan is supposed to be really beautiful , the nature , the geography , next year God willing you should start in new Mexico, you say always that new Mexico is one of your favourite , start at the border, see how far you get up to north east , upstate new York , new Hampshire , Vermont , all new England , could be there God willing for the fall colours in Vermont and new England , be beautiful ,

The Nordic Park is a tribute to the Nordic people who migrated to, settled and built Astoria.

Yes, the Astoria-Megler bridge is a beauty!
It's no longer mandatory to have an attendant pump your fuel in Oregon. I believe it was voted out in 2023.

Hello Russ Anyway you Should Put All Of You're Top Fans On Your Rvtv Site Safe Travels Russ
That's a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion.
Nicely done documentary. TY
Astoria, isn’t this the Goonies town also? Great video Russ!
The movie Kindergarten Cop was filmed there.
I gotta say, I don't like the map popping up and blocking the view. I wish it was smaller and off to the side a bit. Love the museum visits
Yay🎉
