    My dogs would literally walk then as soon come in the house use the bathroom.. i locked them n the crate over night they literally starting using the bathroom outside ever since ... the crate method is truly the way to go

    We have a now 16 week puppy. We feed in the crate and followed basically this process. He was trained in less than 2 weeks and because he was never out of our sight he didn’t have one accident in the house.

      Did you give the food near the end of crate time? Like he had already been in the crate for 90 min, you put food in there, wait 15 min or whatever, and take him outside?

    • @dawnboyd1784

      This is helpful thanks. I’m adopting a 2 month old puppy soon…was curious if you kept the water inside the crate at all times and did you take it out as soon as it drank? What did you do at night, did you cut out water completely but still take outside every few hours? Thanks!

    You are very missed on your show. I can't believe that a 50 something man like myself would wake up and have coffee while watching your show. You and your beautiful pups would make me smile,laugh and at times cry ( now an easy thing to do since many of us now stay home and don't want to get sick). But anyway, I never had an opportunity to thank you .

    This is by far the BEST HOUSEBREAKING training video I’ve seen. I’ve watched over a dozen in a row today and they’re all either what not to do or long-winded with no real instructional specifics.
    I’ve Fostered and trained dogs for two decades and his basic Day One crate training procedure I’ve used for every single dog I’ve taken into foster, whether puppy or elder, because it not only assures housebreaking, it establishes that initial structure and boundaries they need.
    Each dog earns its freedom time on their own individual progression schedule.
    Great job, thanks for this visual instructional housebreaking video. 👍

    • @bandbporter
      @bandbporter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It reminds me very much of the recommended schedule for a newborn baby. It’s basically a triangle as well. Wake up, feed, “play time”, at first sign of “tired” (yawn, eye rubbing) lay down for sleep again

    • @kellytesi4185
      @kellytesi4185 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi, can they eventually learn to just have free reign of the house after they are crate trained for sometime? I don't want to do the crate forever if possible.

    • @bandbporter
      @bandbporter ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kellytesi4185 probably but mine is 3 1/2 months old and we’ve had her for almost 2 months … and she’s nowhere near being ready to not be in her crate at night. We use a pen during the day when we have to leave the house or for when we can’t watch her closely. She only goes in her crate at night to sleep.

    • @christineguttilla6465
      @christineguttilla6465 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kellytesi4185 absolutely. But each reaches that on their own timetable that you’ll have to assess… and sometimes it’s a trial and error and “oops, too soon” moment. I thought my elder pit was past crating… until I came home one day and my new recliner had been ripped to shreds 😯
      Then it was back to the drawing board lol.
      Many times it’s a graduation… from crating to gating off in a certain safe area of the home, most especially when no one is home. Usually from crate to gating off in a kitchen (with garbage not within reach) or a hallway.

    Thank you! 🙏🏾 I rescued a dog a week ago who had no potty training. I tried scheduling her meals/water, multiple walks outdoors daily, and she would continue to eliminate indoors, anywhere. I started your method yesterday and since then, she’s been successfully going outdoors! This is also helping with crate training, so double thank you!!

    I used this same method to train my dog and worked really well. It wasn’t Brandon’s but same concept. I recommend the same process to all my friends who got dogs. I have one friend who was really against crating her dogs and she spent months getting her dogs potty trained. From my experience this is the best method.

      @HannahV200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My dogs used to sleep in a play pen type crate then they were puppies but the owners of the parents trained the puppies to go potty in a litter box so that’s how they were trained until we potty trained them

      What about if the dog is keep biting any stuff in living room during house training?

    • @knowitall5263
      @knowitall5263 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheAndreas1203 You’ll need to correct the biting. It’s simple:
      Say “no”
      Give the dog one of their toys and when they start playing with it give plenty of praise & lots of treats.
      Make sure to always have a variety of toys & if your dog likes to chew then get them toys or meat bones that they can chew on.
      You’ll have to do this a few times until they get the general drift that playing with their toys is fun and rewarding.
      I’d recommend teaching them the “leave it” command directly after as it works really well on walks when they try to eat grass or pick up sticks.

    This is the most common sense method I've seen yet. We recently adopted a year-old dog who is probably a border collie/terrier mix. Weighs 30 pounds. She came from a foster situation where she was not trained and lived with too many other dogs who also weren't trained. My question is this: This dog needs a lot of exercise including walks in the neighborhood and games of fetch in the backyard. How do we work exercise into the triangle you've presented here? In the triangle, there is no accounting for exercise but I'm sure you encourage it. So how do we work it in? Thanks in advance.

    Thank you, Excellent video production, it was like a show on TV. I was with you up to the last point about leashing them near their accident. I dont understand how that helps. Also I am working on housebreaking a rescue. I got her to where she will go to the door but she wont bark or let you know that she is ready. If you could do a video or add a tip to get the pups to also signal vocally that they need out that would be great!

    I'm struggling with this process. I have an older dog that I rescued from the highway, and don't know her background. But she is deaf. We are working through this process. What I don't hear from this video, is what to do at night. Obviously, you can't keep your eyes on them constantly at night, So should they be in the crate at night? Is it an extended period of time in the crate like all night, or am I supposed to still be maintaining this schedule. I'm a little unclear on the durations.

    Our first pup's crate was in our living room but he cried first few nights we had him. I was then told the crate needed to be in the bedroom so he could hear and smell us. Worked like a charm. Had better sleep then, however, he hated the crate during the day. Picking up a pup in two days. We didn't do the treat method previously so I'm pretty confident this will work.

    We got a eight month old rescue dog, German shepherd collie mix, and when she first arrived, she went immediately when we would go outside and poop. However, it’s been a week and a half now, and she is seeming more stressed about the new situation than she was when she got here although we did, find out she was sick and had her on antibiotics. But now that she’s been better she’s very scared of every noise and everything that moves and we live in an apartment complex with just a small area for her to go to the bathroom on a neighborhood that we don’t want to be walking around, especially at night or early in the morning. Now she’s gotten to where she is too scared to go to the bathroom outside. She just keeps listening to every noise and every car that passes and unlike when she first got here she is seemingly terrified. she noticed that I had gone to the restroom in the bathroom and quickly after use the restroom on the bathroom floor and she’s been struggling with going outside. I had watched videos, saying to take her out in a lot of short breaks so we go out 10 times a day probably more for five or 15 minutes but she will not go outside. She comes back inside and goes into the bathroom on the floor now will take a towel and drag it over her poop and pee after seeing me clean it up try not to react to this going in the house and also trying to clean it up in a negative or positive way but I am becoming desperate because I do not know what to do. It’s a small one bedroom apartment so we didn’t think we needed a crate. However, I was considering getting one but she does have a corner designated for her so she has her own safe space. She’s extremely smart she’s just very scared and does not have much confidence. She’s a wonderful dog we just need help helping her also I should mention there are times where I take her outside where we go on longer walks now that she’s not sick or as the vet said contagious anymore but she still will not go, it seems like no matter what. I’m home five days out of the week for most of the days only leaving for sure errands so her schedule stays pretty consistent. She is very traumatized for whatever she went through. I know she was in the pound for a while and then she went to Petsmart and went to a few different homes tryouts that didn’t work out because they said she was territorial. She is not aggressive she just likes her space, but if she’s free to play with the dogs, she loves playing with them, she just doesn’t like it when she’s on a leash or in her safe place and there’s other dogs in her space. We could really use all the help. You could give us all the advice. We are all open ears. there’s no way I am sending her back especially after what she’s already been through. Thank you.

    Trying this out on my 4 month old puppy. She starts to get antsy in her crate around the one hour mark. Do I ignore her or take her out? Any tips? She can hold it overnight.

    My dog is 2 years old ( just got her from a shelter) and is not food motivated, blue heeler mix. she is very timid, about 35 lbs and seems to be scared of lots of things. Not sure a crate would be the right fit for her.

    Do I repeat this "triangle" throughout the day? Like all day long? So crate..outside..play.. crate...outside..play...crate..etc., all day? How do people do this if they work?

    How do you correct the puppy?

    • @spatrk6634
      @spatrk6634 ปีที่แล้ว

      you dont.
      they are babies that do mistakes. you only reward good behaviors.
      biggest punishment for them is for you to ignore them for a minute.
      which you can do if there is puppy biting involved that you want to correct.
      other than that, i dont know any correction for a puppy behavior

    Thank you for this video! we got our 3.5 months old puppy almost a week ago and we are considering getting a crate. Can you leave him in the crate when you get out of the house? or only when you are in the house as well? Or do you recommend to let him be outside the crate when we leave the house?

    @Brandon McMillan do you have any tips for a Boston terrier that sneaks around in the night and poops and eats it? She also does it when I leave the house. Leaving her in the crate all night or when I and gone is not an option. She loves and goes to her crate when told to but will not tolerate it all day or all night.

    Just got a 4 month old lab puppy. My partner and I both work out of the house, but I'm lucky I can do remote work to train our dog during the day. Our work schedules vary a little - I start at 8 and finish around 4:30 while my husband around 6 and finishes around 2:30 to 3 p.m. our little puppy sleeps in our room in a dog bed, and is good at night. We don't want to crate her at night, since we'll want her crated while at work. We can come home and let her out and check on her and play, etc. before going back in for afternoon. Is it okay to crate train her while home during day and just leave her in a separate room from office?

    Hei folks, one issue I'm facing with this approach is how to align the "free time - crate time - potty" schedule with the meals. Right after the meals the puppy will want to go potty. What shall I prioritise? Keeping the meal's times (e.g. 07:00, 12:00, 19:00) or the "free time - crate - potty flow"? Any suggestion is appreciated.

    Hi Brandon, I have a five month puppy who just arrived couple weeks ago. He seems to go pretty often as soon as I take him out of the crate, and into his playpen where he eats. When he’s done eating since he’s already gone. I give him 40 minutes time supervised. I’m in apartment building. I find this puppy. Does not have any consistent elimination schedule. Please help.

    There's a big difference in house training an adult or older puppy and an 8 week old pup. I have a 13 week old pup that I brought home at 8 weeks, he is doing excellent with house training but he is not completely house trained and I don't expect that out of a pup until they are older. They just can't hold their bladder for that long at a young age. Also, if you put toys in a crate with a dog then you should also give the warning that the dog should be supervised.
