Yes a co development between ford & Yamaha . If you listen carefully the fiesta sound a bit like a motorbike scream momentarily, when it's revving at the top end....
Flat spot is probably because its just been installed and the ECU can't compensate enough you may have to get it mapped and slightly bigger fuel injectors. I think a sports cat and cat back stainless system with no mid silencer, just back box to be next, then get it mapped and running all nice.

about 2% to 3% is actually a lot! Makes me curious how it turns out when people are putting such a filter at such a spot it only sucks in hot air, instead of the rather good location in the fiesta. Regaining power on old engine, check spark-plugs and fuel-injectors first?
Use good old redex and premium fuel up to the next test, and some Wynns oil supercharge to protect the old engine. Used both for years in many different cars never had any problems. Also quality multi electrode spark plugs. Good luck. 👍

I’ve seen several dyno tests on you tube recently involving older cars and all made stock power. People say cars lose power with age but these tests show that often they don’t if they been serviced regularly and are running well.
Had K&N sitting on Weber carb on my Mk3 Escort some 30yr ago. Seemed like great performance. Stuck a dodgy custom exhaust on it later which helped too. Great fun.

I had same colour fiesta MK4 as my first car with a cone filter. I loved the noise 😂 same 1.25 engine aswell they are actualy 74 bhp. God that noise brings back some memories.
I miss my MK4 Fiesta, it was a Mazda 121 and was basically the same. It has one of those airs filters and it didnt sit in the box cause the box was completely removed, The little thing just destroyed the miles until the air filter sucked a flooded road up into the engine.
Had a 1998 mk4 fiesta with 40k miles on it was absolutely mint and the Kent engine loved to be revved. Had a subaru exhaust on it and wheel spun everywhere wish I never got rid but got my mam to write it off 😂
Ebay Chinese intercooler & turbo with bigger injectors, the turbo would allow you to have it in a higher gear more if sized right so the spool time is quick! It would get better mileage as crazy as it sounds!
Speaks volumes when the dyno operator wants to buy your econobox, but here in America if your car made those numbers you'd do your best to keep it under your hat lol. The 3.1 v6 in my Buick Century supposedly makes 195hp and the 4.3 Vortech v6 in my Safari makes 220, both are over 9.1 compression so you can really feel when you use premium gas.
I got a k&n air filter for my van. No real difference in horsepower or fuel consumption. Where it did make a difference was in improving the rev response of the engine.
If you're sucking more air in, you need to throw more fuel in and more exhaust out to make any significant gain. Bigger injectors and straight through pipes 😁?
Yeah. Always bigger gains on a bigger engine. Though that's still an impressive increase. .. I'd suggest the air box was tuned for quietness rather than performance....
That cone requires heat shielding or you can lose them horses when it’s hot so I’d just use a panel filter. The panel filters boost is not going to be noticeable either & will be a bit quieter but the main reason I fitted filters to all my cars is there washable so they pay for themselves if you own the car 3-4 years. I now have a focus st with stage 1 so it’s about 275 hp 420 torque & stock filter is paper cone type so I swapped to green cone filter & it sounds awesome & probably 5 - 7hp gain on that because it’s turbo & higher powered cars will benefit more from filters…again the real win is noise response & washability but on that power level 5-7 hp is not noticed.
It's got 75 standard at the flywheel If you compare the power at the wheels it will give you a better set of real world figures It would be nice to see what sort of Dyno it is and what ask the numbers are at the bottom 👍
You can always get a bit more suck squeeze bang and a blow with a big enough tube, also bigger lobes on your shaft which opens the valves on the head for more air and liquid to get in for an even bigger bang, at least that's what I was told, I had a very basic education, I read it in a Haynes manual.
I put one on my civic and it did sound better but it now sucks in the hot air from the engine compartment. So I gain 2 percent with the larger filter and lose 2 percent because I am using hot air. So I was thinking of pointing it straight down to suck in the cold air from under the car and when I turn off the engine the dirt will just fall off the filter. What do you think +2 percent minus 2 percent but sounds a lot better. Lol
With the extra induction noise this car will get tiresome on a long journey, especially if you need to open the windows to keep cool. A mild remap will yield maybe 10% more power across the board, and done correctly, remove any flat spots, making the car feel more responsive and much nicer to drive. Any power gains above this will need decat, induction tuning etc. I would have stayed with the standard airbox, maybe looked for a performance filter to put in it, and mild re-map!
Yes i agree, also you would need to inform your insurance company that its modified with that filter, not worth it really, better to look standard with mild remap.
It can’t be any more than the fiesta without any filter. Perhaps you should run it without any filter and then with the K&N and compère it to the standard setup.
I had a k@n on my corsa b back in the day it would bog down with all the heat 🤣 The increase in mpg isn’t really worth the noise, panel filter would be better.
We had one of those my wife and Eldest daughter sort of wrote it off between them. I got a call from D saying she got it stuck between two trees over the wold tops. It got fixed but shortly after the Eldest daughter finished it off😢
Does what it says on the tin. Manufacturers have other requirements to worry about like water ingestion, dusty climates and people who never change the filter so its always a compromise. As another test on the same day, I would have liked to have seen no filter at all, that way you can see what reduction any induction restriction has.
Are you organising any more dyno days ? Maybe 2025 ? Is it only remaps that chris does ? Or could he balance my old Triumph carbs and just get her running sweetly ? Any ideas what a remap would do for a skoda yeti 1.6tdi ? Thanks
What about drilling the original air box above filter for more air flow would the increase if any be cheaper than buying a KN filter. Loads of air box mods on various sites and vehicles but do they really work.
Geoff mate, here you go get an ECU remap lol, sounds like a six cylinder 68 Mustang; but much better than our 1995 N Reg Golf 1.6 75hp that we had in 2007!! Would love to bring our XC60 T6 Turbo to see what it's got under the hood, but might cost a fortune from Switzerland!! Best Regards from Switzerland
Great for a laugh, but honestly have been in the trade for many decades non of thes crap works without adding other systems to aid. Hot soak under hood kills power ,crap plugs, tired coils the list goes on and on.A fresh tune up of the ignition system would be worth 3-4 extra hp. You are doing it right though by doing 1 step at a time to show how each change makes a difference..Now do spark plugs, clean injectors, change coils , clean the valves chemicaly ,add a sheild over the air filter to only grab colder air and you will see 10 hp gain
1other point is to get that old pluged up CAT hot as hell red hot to clean it out, all the idling it has done it will be 1/2 full of crap restricting flow. I run watter at full rev into the intake on a mist and the crap that comes out is amazing pound of carbon is released. in fine chunks..
Yeah... BUT what about the exhaust? I think most cars are very restrictive just as much on the intake as the exhaust. I personally think all cars should have slightly oversized of each.
Sadly those gains would probably be lost again on hot days once she’s up to full temp. It’d be interesting to see what she makes with a K&N element in the factory air box👍🏻
Used to be £10 for a power run!?! I know this isn’t a tuning project and I’ve been out of the tuning game for a while but… a 1400 is externally identical to the 1250 and even the 1600 (while externally slightly different) will bolt straight in. Not sure if the Fiesta still had a rotor arm and distributor when this one was made, certainly 2005 ones had moved to twin coils and no distributor.

That's not bad at all. Also that MK4 is a great looking example
Great video thats me off to grab a new filter. convinced me the sound is worth it..
This brings back memories of my turquoise k11 micra 😅 the metal finned air filter just made it every bit the race car I wanted of it 😂
2.5% peak power gain from a bit of pipe and a filter? Someone tell Lewis Hamilton!
For mo' powa, Geoff, you need to straight pipe it, put a big ass Cummins with two turbos, a spoiler and a racing stripe.
I had a k@n on my corsa b back in the day it would bog down with all the heat 🤣
The increase in mpg isn’t really worth the noise, panel filter would be better.
We had one of those my wife and Eldest daughter sort of wrote it off between them. I got a call from D saying she got it stuck between two trees over the wold tops. It got fixed but shortly after the Eldest daughter finished it off😢
A chip and bigger injectors and exhaust work well on these
Does what it says on the tin. Manufacturers have other requirements to worry about like water ingestion, dusty climates and people who never change the filter so its always a compromise. As another test on the same day, I would have liked to have seen no filter at all, that way you can see what reduction any induction restriction has.
Without a filter very little difference than with the K&N.. they're close to a no filter as possible.
A remap and improved induction should be done at the same time ideally.
Are you organising any more dyno days ? Maybe 2025 ?
Is it only remaps that chris does ? Or could he balance my old Triumph carbs and just get her running sweetly ?
Any ideas what a remap would do for a skoda yeti 1.6tdi ?
Thanks
Mind 5th gear did varying mods on a VW Corrado and gained the best BHP with redex.
Jeff, it is the glass stickers that add the really extra bhp.
What about drilling the original air box above filter for more air flow would the increase if any be cheaper than buying a KN filter. Loads of air box mods on various sites and vehicles but do they really work.
Really recommend this guy .
Was there some valve bounce i heard revving with no load. After air filter fitted. ???
why didn't you use the proper breather pipe that was on the filter? just wondering if a few more gains were left off the table there
Did the ECM get remapped with the filter install? You won't get all the gains until you remap the ECM
I fitted one of those and a big Bore exhaust to my old 2003 Corsa years ago and it made it slower lol
Brings back memories 😊
I'll have a spot on your Dyno day 3.0 si z4 coupé one of 5 in phoenix yellow registered in the UK , bought originally from Worcester 😁
When tested stock was it a clean/ new air filter, surly a good service would be the best bet to regain some lost ponies
You don't actually need to fit the air filter for the gains, just put the sticker on your rear window, does the same thing.
Put some new plugs in,decat & ram some air through to the new performance filter oh & dont forget the fluffy dice😂❤it
Used to be £10 for a power run!?!
I know this isn’t a tuning project and I’ve been out of the tuning game for a while but… a 1400 is externally identical to the 1250 and even the 1600 (while externally slightly different) will bolt straight in.
You know you want to!
Love seeing you both giggling like teenagers.
Sounds great. Wish id done that to my mum's when she had it!
Big bore exhaust is a must Geoff defo up for a track day where you thinking ?
Thanks for a fantastic, fun car vid. And for keeping the missed gear change in! 😂
