You should get a new Jimny from overseas and use it to try and convince someone in the US to sell something like that, except with removable top and doors. Like the shortcut that Jeep promised, until they realized how much money they would lose from Wrangler sales. Oh, and don't go all consumer reports and lie your ass off to try and destroy its reputation.
I feel like a better comparison would have been the Outback Wilderness rather than the Crosstrek, since the size would have been closer to the Sante Fe and Bronco.
XRT owner here and I feel like this is a fair review. Yup it's not meant for anything hardcore, and I've yet to really even test the 4wd. Note the skid plate is not standard either so had to add that for ~$400. Agree it's an excellent value and the interior utilization is incredible...would make a good overlanding vehicle possibly. Perfect for car camping too which I've done with my son.
All right first you can't compare the Crosstrek in a Santa Fe to a full-size bronco. If you really want to compare it equally compare it to the bronco sport.
@robdog1245 Only vehicles I've owned that gave me major issues was my Civic and Maxima. No Ford I've owned gave me issues or left me stranded. Sheep on dude 🤘
Bronco sport would still crush the Subaru and the Santa Fe. I’m a full sized Bronco guy and I was pretty dismissive of the cash grab BINO(Bronco in name only) but when I actually drove a baby Badlands, I had to admit that it’s shockingly good for an ifs unibody. Plus they’ve got a new one with a Sasquatch package and that’ll be even better softroading.
@robdog1245the Sport is the unibody C-2 platform, so it’s the same inside as the Focus, Escape, Edge and Maverick. That means that the C-2 has been around for 10-15 years so it’s in literally millions of cars and every mechanic in America has worked on a C-2 platform a zillion times. That being said, I’ve owned tons of fords and a serious mechanical issue in a car with under 100,000 miles is super rare.
I love my crosstrek wilderness as well. I’m not delusional and think that my crosstrek is some wall crawler or that it can handle high level roads. It’s a capable little car that can easily handle level 1-3 roads and I’m fine with that.
@@manofsesame3024 we had one for a long time and it seemed like everything broke except the motor!....all the door handles broke... You could only open the driver's door. Hyundai/Kia really needs to stop using this DCT transmission in the Santa Fe and Sorento. It is so unreliable and can't even do relatively simple off-road obstacles. Its a jarring decision considering they have a perfectly good 8-speed auto available.
I wish they could get rid of DCTs as a whole. They make good normal automatics so just stick with that. It’s less complexity and likely improves reliability.
I’m on my second crosstrek now own a wilderness. I couldn’t be happier really. I off road some on construction sites (work) and haul bikes and a paramotor biweekly.
The bronco is an off-roader until you break a tie rod. Then it’s back to being a road friendly show vehicle. I’ll never buy one and I can’t wait to get an outback wilderness and a wrangler rubicon unlimited.
Well there is an enormous gulf in price differences between the Bronco and the others in this comparison. Broncos were built specifically for offroad while the others not so much. You may well substitute a Jeep Wrangler against the other two and you will get similar results.
After owning lots of Subarus, including Crosstreks with XMODE, I would never give up my Bronco to have another one. The wife still drives a lifted Xtrek Sport, I don't like driving it any more and stick to my Bronco. The trails I take it to would destroy both of the soft roaders tested today. :)
that jump into the trunk should happen more often! :) also, would love to see the 3 Brian test with 3 Brians on one shot/screen. I thought someone was going to steal the snacks when he put them into the center console lol.
I ended up with a Forester Wilderness because of the better visibility and the much better ground clearance and approach and departure angles. While I love the Crosstrek's look much more, it's not as much of an off-roader as the Forester and even the Outback Wilderness models. I took my FW to Redbird Offroad Park in Indiana and mistakenly ended up on parts of the Jeep Badge of Honor trails which surprisingly the Forester handled with no issue. This was deep deep mud bogs, huge ruts and 16% inclines/declines. The problem I have with the Bronco is that it's a wide vehicle and some of those tighter trails with sharp turns and angles would be a challenge for a big truck like the Bronco and even the Outback Wilderness.
Owned a Wrangler ($25k OTD in '98) for over 200k+ miles. Yes, it went everywhere. However, driving on the highway or for everyday use, that was a much different experience. Times have changed, and with more permissive laws for side by sides, they are the future of off reading. Want to go rock climbing, or just about anywhere? Buy a RZR for a fraction of the price. For hard off road, traditional 4x4s like the $72K Bronco may become the CB radios of the 21st century. The manufacturers just don't want to accept today's reality.
I thought the same thing. Has similar 4WD systems to the other two crossovers but has much better ground clearance and approach angles. I’d be very curious to see how it stacks up
If someone said I could choose 1 of the 3 and keep it for free, I'd choose the Crosstrek. If I were buying one, it would still be the Crosstrek. Those little things will go anywhere.
Nah. While it has the power, the CTW has been better tuned to be more trail capable. The CTW offers arguably the best value for a trail/off-road capable small SUV. I've driven the Outback Wilderness and would take my Crosstrek Wilderness all day long
@@js9522It would've been a better test for the video though because it's a comparison between an SUV which is already big, then a large 3 row Crossover, and the a small hatchback crossover. I wish Hyundai would have just went nuts and made a small, simple, and affordable ACTUAL off roader. Something like the Suzuki Jimny, only with removable top and doors... They could have really undercut the Jeep/Bronco market, while giving people a fun time they can afford.
Why not use the Outback Wilderness instead of the Crosstrek???? I will admit I am puzzled by Subaru's decision to put shorter tires on the Wildernesses than they put on the non Wilderness models (well at least I have noticed it on the Outbacks)
We've got to get off the "CVT is a four letter word and super unreliable and boring" trend. Its not the year 2000 and the CVTs aren't coming from Nissan anymore. I would rather a CVT for a 4 cylinder than a 10 gear transmission that is constantly searching for the right gear before it finally settles on what it wants.
@@kevin12697 Absolutely. As a Juke owner, though I have the 6sp manual, that damn JATCO is more of a four letter word than CVT in the Juke community. The misinformation on CVT maintenance is the other factor. Car companies claiming "lifetime" fluid, 60k mile changes, etc., have really done CVTs a disservice. At 60k, the fluid is like liquid sandpaper and has caused its damage.
CVT's can be good if they are made well. Nissan has always had bad CVT's and while they are much better, I still wouldn't buy one. Subaru's newer ones are actually very good. Above all is maintenance, just remember to change the fluid no later than 60k miles and you should be fine.
With all do respect, your comments lacked of objectivity. It was more like promoting the Hyundai over a Ford Bronco or a Subaru Crosstrek. Everybody know that the off road capabilities of the Ford Bronco are way over the other twos. Still I did enjoyed your video.

A small hatchback crossover vs a 3 row large crossover vs a large offroad SUV. They all have different purposes and I don't think your ever gonna buy a crossover in general to do rock crawling let alone crawling the big of a rock.
This is a weird comparison. As others have mentioned, a Bronco Sport and a Outback Wilderness would've been more in line with the Hyundai in terms of intended purpose and class. Why not compare the rock-climbing ability of an M1 Abrams versus a Toyota Corolla?
This comparison with the Bronco makes sense for the stated purpose of comparing what the crossovers are capable of vs a more dedicated off road machine. If you buy a Hyundai to take off-road, then you're clearly out-of-your-mind. It might drive well...a few times. However, Hyundai-Kia use very cheap parts -- especially under the vehicle.
