      Chris - what m.2 keys does it socket take?.(useally vital to know since the brand often dont inform about it in specs and the actual m.2 socket standard, I doubt it handles generation3) anyway i do recall you have an generation3 M.2, as in your samsung 960 with KeyM.. to my understanding these m.2 tablet sockets is only KeyB and KeyM/B valid.
      you got any info on this. as mention' its oftn quite vital if people looking to suit there socket up with an m.2 NGFF card, that they end up with the correct m.2 key.

      thx for the feedback Chris.
      i notice in the other video of your thermal mod, that it seems like a KeyB slot and generation1, so you cant use the more potent M.2 cards, ewen if there was room in length for 2280.. the M2 card you used look like the one that is called KeyB&M m.2 ssd card (gen2) hence two groves i each side ..
      learned it the hard way, took a plunge on a Intel 6P M.2 card 256 at black friday offer here in Denmark there was priced lower then a std ssd, so i thought great i could just use an M.2 adapter and use that card at lower sata speeed, but nope all the m.2 slots and also the two sata-adapters m.2 slots I got in house, cant take it, since they are only valid for KeyB and keyM&B..
      I am of the presumption that keyM (gen3) is only valid for motherbords x4 3.0 sata3 pci keyM slots,( groove in the right side) and there aint any sata-adapters or USB adaptee there can manage KeyM to standard sata3 for the time being. (so for the moment cant use this +1600mb/s 256gb card and still looking for an adapter or something that can work with M.2 keyM standard and use it at lower speeds like a standard sata3drive.

      Which do yo like more, this or ezbook 3 pro?

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like the build, wifi AC and the screen. But I think the EZBook 3 Pro is better, just lacking wifi AC. This also gets up to 97 degrees C! Needs a thermal mod, the EZBook 3 Pro does not.

    Waiting for Chuwi to fill the extra "slots" and give a total of 8GB RAM, then this is a winner

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it there was a Pro version with 8GB or the slightly better N4200 (18 EU core GPU) + 8GB then it would be a real winner.

    I'm leaving my thoughts for any of those people wanting to know about running Linux on this device.
    Ok so after watching this review, I decided to purchase the Lapbook 14.1. So far, it's a very good device for the cost. Running Windows 10, it began to bog down after a couple hours use. Reboots brought it back up to speed, but I didn't really care as I knew I was going to delete Windows anyway.
    In order to boot a live USB, you need to go into BIOS and change OS Mode to Linux from Windows. Easy enough. Then press f7 on boot to select boot device. I saw a lot of people say you need kernel 4.6 or higher to run, but the Linux Mint live USB I used ran on 4.4 and worked fine. I would suggest updating the kernel on the permanent install anyway. Then I just deleted the Windows partitions and started installing my permanent OS.
    My OS choice was Gentoo Linux running on kernel 4.9.6. It was a breeze to set up like normal. I got my drive partitioned and all the files copied, my configs set and rebooted to the new environment. My first issue was with the eMMC storage. Linux really didn't like it. Linux Mint took a long time to access it and now Gentoo took a very long time to boot (had to use an initramfs just to boot from it). In the end, it was just too slow, plus when it went to sleep, the eMMC would auto unmount which made it autoremount as read only. Not exactly a good situation. And unfortunately, the Linux kernel no longer has the option to force SD cards or eMMC to stay mounted during suspend. Unless you want to risk an old kernel which doesn't support the Apollo Lake arch, you'll need to find a way around this issue.
    My suggestion is to install an M.2 SSD and install your Linux distro on that. You can even keep Windows 10 on the eMMC if you want. It's basically useless for Linux anyway. Once I put in my new SSD and moved my Gentoo install over to that drive, everything worked pretty flawlessly. Just your normal minor issues when installing Gentoo on some new hardware. Installing a more user friendly distro would probably yield perfect results.
    My only other issue is that the backslash key is not below backspace like normal. It's next to the right alt key. The delete key is in it's normal place. A bit annoying for anyone trying to write code.
    So overall it is quite Linux friendly right out of the box. Just need to avoid that eMMC.
    Another note: I get an average of 12hr battery now with my Gentoo install running i3wm with compton. That's at 70% brightness, sleep disabled, screen blanking disabled, under normal use running normal applications like web browser, terminal. When in suspend, predicted battery life is 30 hours! When compiling (as one must do with Gentoo all the time), battery is predicted to last 8 hours. I haven't had any compiles take that long, so I couldn't say for sure. The battery life is just incredible on this.

    Would you be so kind, maybe in future videos, to show the refresh rate in the Intel graphics options? the reason I say this is because I have this Teclast Tablet and it only gives 48 Hz and 55 Hz options. Through external HDMI it does do the full 60 Hz though. So that would be nice to know in advance, nobody seems to cover this, thanks :)

    Very nice. I was pretty stoked on getting this one but then I came across the PEAQ PNB S1115-IM2NL; a 15.6 inch, 1080p laptop with Intel Core M-5Y31, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, wireless AC, gigabit ethernet for only €288 at Media Markt.
    Got delivered this afternoon.
    You can expect this looked like a better deal then this Chuwi because of the Core M and 128GB SSD for this price, considering the fact this Chuwi will cost me as much (if not more) when I have to pay import taxes etc.
    However; this Peaq has the Core M-5Y31 from 2014(!) and it's 15.6" and heavier at 2 kilo's and probably worse battery life.
    So I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it.
    Great review as always Chris, I keep watching your videos even though I've still never bought a Chinese Windows tablet/laptop yet :P

    I have the same lapbook, great product. However one tip: When you add an extra M.2 2242 ssd module, put tape below the ssd module on the metal counterweight strip. First I did not do this and the ssd module touched the strip with as result that the lapbook did not boot anymore!

    Is it possible to remove the keyboard keys for cleaning? or will it break them?
    I got mine a few months ago and haven't had much chance testing it when it came until now.
    I found the "=" key doesn't register if I press it on it's bottom part only on the top most part of it. It is very annoying since I use that key very often. I thought maybe I need to break it in so I pressed it many times and tried pressing it semi-hard a few times. it didn't seem to change anything. So now I want to try and remove the key cap to see if I can find something that would fix it underneath but I don't want to break the key.
    Please help.

    Hi @TechTablets.com, what's the best choice of chinese branded notebook that under $400 in your opinion??? Are there any better choice than xiaomi air 12?
    What would you like to recommend if I need one that have good screen from 12.5 to 14.1", long battery life, good temp, heavy office and web usage (several documents such as MS docs, excel, visio, pdf with 5-6 chrome tabs at the same time).

    Would you say this laptop is good for university work? I currently need a laptop to bring with me to classes, read studies, use the office programs etc. Have been looking around for something that can work good for that (don't want to wait forever for stuff to load) and did get a tips about your site and then I found this review. Would love some input on how this computer can manage my needs and also prehaps how long life you would expect this computer to have (don't want to buy a new one next year). Thanks for the help :)

    After watching your reviews all over again I decided I will buy Chuwi 14.1. You mentioned we can install Transcend SSD easily (I will buy that one too) but one thing you didn't mention: If we add SSD and then change boot device to this newly added SSD what about Windows 10? They will stay on old storage (64 GB). Is there a way to transfer Windows to this new SSD? Thank you!

    My primary issue with this particular product is, one is still must carry around a heavy, clunky power brick when charging over USB-C is increasingly the norm. The other thing is, the M.2 SSD slot. Is that Truly an SSD slot or an extra slot in support of eMMC? If they had 8GB memory on the board and the 64GB eMMC was SSD instead (and preferrably 128GB SSD) this would be a very nice consideration. But then, one gets what one pays for in life. I would not mind a higher price for better specs.

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Type-c charging would be good I agree. It's full spec SATA3 the M.2 slot. At least we have that. I hope they make a Pro "8GB" Ram version, but after my thermal mod, I'm really happy with this laptop for the price. I'm typing on it now.

    If you look at this video at; th-cam.com/video/XwrLd7VPwTE/w-d-xo.html there seems to be a question on whether or not there is an anti glare coating. (as mentioned by Chris in his review) Starting at minute 3:54 you will see the reviewer has the Chuwi 14.1 outside, and while he mentions there is no anti-glare coating and bad outdoor readability you can see the notebook has a lot of glare. Since I use my notebooks while sitting on a large outdoor balcony, before I make a decision to buy the Chuwi 14.1 I would very much appreciate if someone would comment on their experience outdoors with this model. hey man, can you play 1080p or 720p@60fps youtube videos on that thing in chrome or firefox? I really don't want to use edge and I need a laptop just for watching youtube, twitch, browsing the web, and communication with my phone

    • @jeremyniels
      @jeremyniels 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case you really should look into a chromebook, much better bang for ur buck, everything on a chromebook has to be done through chrome browser, and you can use a online version of office, the OS is muuuch faster and needs lower specs to handle full 1080p playback

      from another website
      "Apollo Lake Linux support will probably be similar to what happened with Braswell. I bought a Braswell board the day it went on sale at Newegg last July and it was unusable in most distros. After Ubuntu 15.10 came out, Intel released the Intel Graphics Stack for Linux found at 01.org. It has worked flawlessly ever since. Those graphics drivers were put into the 16.04 release so it works out of the box. They also have support for Fedora.
      I’d imagine it is the same for Apollo Lake. They just came out with a new graphics installer for Ubuntu 16.10 and Fedora 24. While I didn’t find exact details, there are blog posts on Phoronix that talk about open source code being released nearly a year ahead of hardware releases for both Apollo Lake and Gemini Lake. I also found a link claiming Apollo Lake Linux support here:
      www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005526.html"

    Im really interested to buy this laptop. actually i am studying computer science. I have a really high end pc which i use in gaming and for other coding and programming stuffs. But i was looking for a decent lightweight laptop for university purposes and Like doing some coding and programming on the go, browsing the internet etc etc... will this lapbook be enough for these tasks?
    It would really help if you reply...

    Well we all know that high end gaming like CS Go will cause the CPU to get hot, but what about more casual games, or emulation (like using emulation station) do they cause the CPU to get into the high 90's as well?

    • @SparkRemarkable
      @SparkRemarkable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything a little too intensive for too long (lets say 30 mins) will make this hot. I think OP has made a heatsink mod to fix this, look through his videos, and it doesn't seem too hard to do :) you just have to be extra careful.

      @JeremyLeePotocki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well thank you for the quick reply I saw on Intel's ARK site that it's max temps are 105C so as long as it never hit that mark it's all good. I will say that with the battery life as good as it is I will be buying this one for when I go on camping trips I can store a bunch of movies and old school nes games to enjoy at night and use a cheap 45 watt solar panel to charge it during the day.

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was $250, no fans in this. It's passively cooled. Only a 6W CPU. 20 tabs in edge? That would load in, but be a bit slow.

    I purchased one of these based on this review, and honestly it was great apart from the awful trackpad. The trackpad makes this thing pretty much useless as far as I am concerned. Stuff is only good value if it's useable, otherwise you are actually throwing away money. Unless you plan to use a mouse this thing is useless.
