Lou conveys such emotions. I have seen many of his interviews, he thinks Mick Jones told Kelly Hansen to copy his moves and his ad libs on stage . he said that" Mick should have let Kelly sing the songs his own way don't hang your coat on my hook what Lou said"

Strongly dis agree, I saw them both live, Lou Graham Live was not good either time I saw him, I will say if he sounded like this when I saw them I would of loved it but he talked to many vocals (Jaggered) live also the Original band played way to fast. In 1983 Foreigner I saw Foreigner at Day on the Green in Oakland they were advertised as a 3 Piece band --They were not, they had so many extras off the stage it looked like a Professional play
Kelly never cheats the song live. I do know Lou had health Issues and that matters and as for Lou writing the Original melody for Vocals -----He was Great and his vocals in the studio was great.

Kelly is a very good singer. But Lue's voice will always be a Foreigner trademark. I would go so far as to say that I doubt they would have made it as big, without his genuin vocal expression. It has this heartbreaking sound, It goes straight to your heart. It's like imagining Led Zeppelin with a singer other than Robert Plant. Or Queen ( Adam Lambert is a very good singer, but it can never be "Queen" without Freddie Mercury). Makes no sense. I remember Lue Gramm from my introduction to Foreigner around 1980. He appeared as the epitome of a live rock singer. He was pricelessly brilliant.

Lou Gramm 100%. He wasn't a "showman" but he delivered the most incredible bluesy vocals. He stands in a class of his own, really. Oh! And he doesn't have a rock star attitude at all, and I believe that added to his appeal with the fans. Lou also wrote a lot of the songs I believe? Lou Gramm, whether he's active/singing/alive or with the Lord, will ALWAYS be the voice/songwriter/performer that put Foreigner on the musical map. The other guy seems like he'd probably be a better replacement for Steve Tyler, just sayin'.

From someone who has seen Foreigner live several times beginning in the 70’s and ending in 2019 I have seen both singers up front and close. I have also owned all of their albums and music over the years. Of course I agree with all you have said and favor Lou but Kelley is a lot of fun and he’s a great front man. The concerts were all full of energy and so amazing every single time. The one in 2019 was fantastic and I was able to take my 26 year old son with me which thrilled me and he also loved the music. We had a blast but my fav will always be Lou because Foreigner stole my young heart a long time ago in the 70’s. I am privileged to have aged and grown up along side this amazing band and love them so much. ❤

Lou can still sing pretty damn well. I know he had health issues and had to leave, but when they replaced him, Foreigner became a cover band. At least when Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth and Brian Johnson replaced Bon Scott, both Van Halen and AC/DC made a lot of new music for years, and many were big hits. What did Foreigner really do besides play their classic hits?

Yeah, he fell out in Japan in 95. Came back to the states to have a huge tumor taken from his brain.
He had to learn to sing all over again. Now has a gospel band with his brother called the LGB. Lou Gramm Band.

    • @waltersimmons946

@@marilyngordy3670 Not true at all . Lou ended the LGB in 2019 and came out of retirement in 2021 he performs with ASIA currently and those concerts are on TH-cam. As far as his tumor , this is what happened. The day before Lou was to leave for Japan in 1996-97 , he went to get an MRI and it revealed that Lou had a tumor in the frontal lobe of his brain the size of an egg and this was after a while when he was already experiencing headaches, blurred vision , repeating himself and couldn't remember his parents phone number which he said they had for 30 yrs . Actually he was told by 2 doctors (in Rochester N.Y) to get his things in order, before doctor Black in Boston removed the tumor by Lazer surgery followed by 30 days of radiation treatment afterwards in April 1997 . Lou informed Mick Jones and the band members(of his diagnosis) and the tour to Japan was postponed .Not long afterwards greedy Mick Jones pushed Lou who should've been home recuperating, had him back on stage in order to avoid lawsuits due to contracts signed before Lous diagnosis and it was very humiliating, Lous weight gain, taking 12 medications and had to have the words to the songs on cardboard paper laid out on stage because he couldn't retain the words by memory . Money mattered more to the band than Lous health. If you haven't read Lous book, "Lou Gramm "JUKE BOX HERO" My 5 decades in Rock n Roll. You should read it, Lou tells it like it is without slamming anybody.

They're damned if they sound exactly like who they are replacing and damned if they bring their own style. IMO, Brian Johnson is the only one who really moved a band to a whole other level as a replacement. Cheers.

I went down the Lou Gramm rabbit hole this weekend. I’m sure you understand how very personal music is. How it evokes SO much emotion. Sometimes it’s downright depressing.
I really LOVE his voice. I have a SUPER hard time when someone else steps in when it’s lead vocals. That said; Kelly really is a good showman and it seems like he’s at least attempting to resemble Lou but it’s not my bag. I wouldn’t pay money to see Foreigner and I’d be super depressed he’s a great singer but Lou is Lou.
I’ve watched the recent performances of Lou and read up on what he’s been through. It’s sad really with one caveat. (Caveat?). He found Jesus. I LOVE that for him!!
Getting older. Losing your voice all that stinks pretty much. I know when he goes out there and gives it his all only to have his voice betray him it’s got to really hit hard. When I watch the old stuff back I really REALLY get sad!!

    • @pgnandt
      @pgnandt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Funny you say this because good melody will invoke emotion. Too much melody and you wind up with a sad song. I like good melody but hate sad songs. A super melodic verse is only good when followed by an uplifting chorus.

"And that's not Kelly's fault". I agree. Lou had a unique voice that fan's relate to because we grew up hearing him. This new Foreigner is a cover band. You can give them credit for trying to keep the music alive. I know one other famous Southern Rock Band that does it, but does it WELL. No need to say who. Someone commenting let me know who you think it is.
When Lou makes an appearance I will gladly watch it and anticipation runs wild waiting for Lou to sing. Noticeable is the band playing out of key or the wrong notes.
Good job, Ken, as a professional vocal coach to point out the differences. That helps settle the argument in my house!

I've studied Lou's voice for many years. The word here is "caliber." Lou vocally is of a different caliber than Kelly. Just listen to "Foreigner Live In The Netherlands 1981." His live vocals on that video are insane. Ken, Lou went on and released 2 solo albums after Foreigner and also formed Shadow King. He has really awesome tunes on all of those albums. I still hope and pray a day may come where he decides to teach. He remains my biggest vocal influence.

Kelly no doubt is a good singer and a great replacement for Lou but there can never be another Lou Gramm taking into consideration he helped write these classic songs plus dropping a half step proves to me how difficult the original song actually was to sing it every night during hundreds of concerts. I bought that first Foreigner album when I was 15 and my parents moved us to Florida. I loved every song on that album after listening to it and really admired so much how Lou could belt out a song and have such powerful lung capacity along with great control and tone. I miss Lou just like I miss Steve Perry but the sad fact is how a singer’s voice is so delicate and almost impossible to keep as we age. Hell I used to sing Lou Gramm and honestly had little issue doing it. Then again I was 18 years old then. 😂.
Thanks for the opinions. I agree with what you said mostly. Respect to both Kelly and Lou but overall my memories are always going to be Foreigner with Lou Gramm! ✌🏼🎤

The difference is that Lou sings with true emotion. I Want To Know What Love Is was a massive hit, simply because of the way Lou sings it. It's a heartbreaking song about loss, fear, but also hope. Listen to each of them sing it, with your eyes closed, and the difference is obvious. Kelly may have stage presence, but there's no need to work the stage when Lou Gramm is singing.
