    How are you studying for your next IT certification? Self-Study, Classroom, or Bootcamp?

      NetworkChuck I'm getting my cybersecurity associates soon plus I just got the Cisco press and Cisco study guide from Sybex. Do I need any routers and switches to prep for my CCENT?

      In most cases, Packet Tracer is more than enough.
      If you feel the need to practice with real equipment you can find it pretty cheap, usually under $100.

      I've been in Networking for 5yrs, and self studying for my ICND1!!! Wife, kid, full-time job, and self study, so you are right it's far too easy for the cert training and study to get pushed back.
      I'm thinking about setting a hard date, and scheduling the exam in advanced to kid of force myself, what is your opinion?

      NetworkChuck hey chuck i have seen network home labs (router/switches) for sale on ebay. I just wondering what is the best up to date equipment to buy to study (specific models). I think it is necessary to get hands on training with the hardware but im not sure what to buy....or maybe create a video on that subject. Thanks for posting such great videos.

    Here are the videos I would like to see from Chuck:
    1. Studying equipment for CCENT/CCNA.
    2. Day in the life of a network engineer.
    3. First job technical and nontechnical interview questions on a networking job (NOC position for example).
    4. Networking/Cybersecurity/Cloud jobs in law enforcement vs private sector.
    5. Automation scripting for Cisco.
    6. Wireless networking certs (CCNA wireless and Ruckus for example).
    and the ideas go on but these are videos we all could benefit from.

      No videos, but from someone already in the field:
      1. PAcket tracker
      2. CYA is the motto. Work from home. Work 3 hrs average.
      3. Mostly behavioral questions. Hardly any technical questions, but if there are , they would be easy ones like what is Ping, what is ARP, etc.
      4. Not sure, i only worked in corporate jobs.
      5. Python
      6. ?

    I self studied for Comptia A+, and it's true, it teaches you discipline, which made me feel very proud of myself.
    By the way, the background sound, raining, reminded me the trick i used to focus on reading. I used my headphones to listen to the sound of rain while learning, very relaxing and keeps you focused from surround noise.

    I self studied CCNA R&S and managed passes first time in ICND 1&2. I used real hardware and virtual labs too.
    I just sat CCNA Security 2 weeks ago, using a mix of self study AND a one day a week class. If I'm honest, the class made the difference between passing and failing. Some of the stuff we couldn't study hands on (Firepower, ISE etc) but we went into real depth on the core content.
    I think Udemy etc where you can ask the creator questions is "almost" as good but face to face is the best option.
    Keith Barker's Facebook page helped me when I was studying Subnetting and Keith helped me nail it. It stuck :)
    CBT Nuggets are the real deal.

    • @eman0828
      @eman0828 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. You don't need a degree at all to become a Sysadmin or Network Engineer. I work as a Desktop Support Technician for Raytheon technologies and there two guys on my team swears by having a degree to get past HR. That's not necessarily true because most IT jobs don't mandate a degree, its optional. Experience and getting your certs maters the most than a college degree. I dropped out college almost 7 years ago doing self study on my own.

    Great question. I've been in IT a loooooooooong time. If you can't pass a CCNA by self study, you're probably not cut out for this. Perpetual education is a requirement for longevity; nearly all of it will be self study, OJT, and advice from expert level colleagues. Fantastic career but requires continual education; think pro athlete but with your mind.

    Have you considered doing a "Day in the life of a network engineer" video? I find the video's about getting into IT helpful but what about once you've arrived? I always liked the technique of imagining yourself in the end goal (what am I working towards?). Talking about what it's actually like might help solidify that vision. Thanks for pushing us learners to keep going :D

    • @joen5935
      @joen5935 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drew Crawford I'm currently pursuing my Bachelor's in Computer Networking and studying for my certs, and I agree, it is really hard to stay motivated because I have no experience in the field, so I don't have a clear vision of where I'm trying to end up. It's pretty difficult to find information on that aspect of the career, and it would be easier to focus if I had some kind of an idea of what it is I'm shooting for.

    I honestly think for careers in CS & IT it’s hard to learn while going to school if you’re learning other courses like your general or elective courses. That’s the problem I had while in school. I wish i
    Could spend my last two semesters just focusing on my networking/programming courses. Now that I graduated I’m trying to refresh myself on basic topics and self studying to prepare for ccna so hopefully I will get a job after. Not sure which field I wanna go into whether it’s IT or programming but People like Network Chuck & Du’An Lightfoot videos are def helping me with a great understanding of networking, thank you.

    Hello chuck. I passed CCNA a week ago. Icnd1 really made me scared because i thought icnd2 will be really difficult. But i must say its not more difficult than icnd1. For me icnd1 was abit dry. There was not many config and stuff. Right now i am studying for ccnp route exam. Wish me luch.

      My brother said the same thing about ICND1. A lot of theory but ICND2 gives you more stuff to play with!
      CCNP R/S is REALLY fun. It goes deeper into the topics that CCNA left you wanting more.

    • @TechnetExplorer
      @TechnetExplorer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yonatan Makara use cisco press books. I used kevin wallaces book on icnd1 & 2. To tell you the truth, i used to study 8 to 9 hours each day. I did lots of labbing. Dont expect you will pass ccna if you are not gonna put in the effort. There is no shortcuts, tricks or any other thing. You have to study the material till you know it like the back of your hand only then go and book the exam.

    I'm currently self studying networking. I learned the basics of networking from college which didn't go in depth about networking but mainly about building, troubleshooting, and small scale security. The rest I learned was programming, virtualization, and servers. So i'm having to learn a lot more about networking and cyber security. I was going to go into programming but I wanted to live close to home and there are no jobs for programmers here. So I decided to try and get a job as plain IT Support and thankfully I managed to land a position as an IT assistant. I am probably not going to pay to take the certification exam but I am going to be learning the material in order to further my knowledge base.

    This fall I will receive my BAchelors of science in I.T, and I know A college program will not help you get certified. College courses will talk about the topic, but they will never dive in deep enough to teach you what you need to pass any cert. I never took a bootcamp, but bootcamps are meant to zero in on the subject and the subject only; thus I think it would be better than college.

    • @NetworkChuck
      @NetworkChuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Treat each day as an opportunity to learn something new. You will run straight into a problem or piece of equipment that you have never come across before. WPA 3 is now a thing. TCP/IP V6 is what will be required moving forward.

    personally self study was the best option for me.
    My local network academy does a CCNA course but takes 48 weeks to complete before been ready to take the exam it’s broken down into 4 semesters each costing 450gbp
    Totalling 1,800gbp not including exams fees and course material needed for the small amount of self study you also have to do each week
    So taking that into account it was cheaper for me and took around 12 weeks to pass my CCNA Just with the online video tutorials and books
    The question is do you have the money to splash and are you willing to spend nearly a full year learning in a classroom for your CCNA?

    • @NetworkChuck
      @NetworkChuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kidd Cooper Dang, that is REALLY expensive! And you’re right, you are paying more money and it’s taking you longer to get the cert. Self-study was definitely the best option.

    • @kiddcooper6996
      @kiddcooper6996 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      NetworkChuck
      They are a “certified Cisco academy” and you get an official Cisco IT Essentials Certificate of Completion each semester.
      The prices are on the link below
      www.networkacademy.co.uk/?page_id=62
      The first semesters £350 my mistake, then £450 there after but as you say it’s really expensive
      I’ve always been a fast learner if I’m interested in the subject so self study always been the best option for me
      Also thanks for making these videos always like what you have to say
      You’re an inspiration for anyone getting into IT Certs 👍

    I'm self-tudying for LFCS and hearing this feedback is so valuable. I'm having a lot of fun learning by myself. Sometimes I've seated for 8 hours thinking on how to solve a problem, only to figure out different factors that play around that problem and come out with a knowledgeable solution. Learning isn't easy, but we're very well equipped to do it.

You also get a Network Associate certificate from the school if you pass the course, aside from passing the CCNA certification. I took this route because I plan on getting a Associtate's Degree and this classes count as 4 credits vs 3 credit hour classes.

    I kind of feel more confident. Growing up I knew some computer stuff so that got me to be the family goto guy. My brother would bring home stuff and tell me to hook it up. Knowing nothing about what he brought. I got everything to work just by doing it. Midi controllers, lights. Audio equipment. Just have it to me and in a few hours I'd give him a run Down on how to use it in the basics.

    I think without beard, you look great, of course with beard you look great too. 😊I learn OSI 7 layers, layer 2 / Layer 3 switches, Routers, TCP/ IP, Subnets, DNS, VLans, STP, OSPF...but when I get my job, I work with 3com, D-Link, ,Netgear,TP-Link...Well, network engineer more rely on practical skills, theory no doubt is important, but practical skills are more important, this is what I believe. Problem is most of the companies during interview, what they want to hire are those who got Bachelor degree or master degree, they will not give chances to those who are willing to devote, if I am employer I dun really mind hiring those without paper qualifications, as long as he is logical and smart enough to learn, and willing to devote his / her time to work hard for me, helping company to grow. According world wide people who are intelligent not really come with paper qualifications, there are a lot of graduates everyday, but what if they can't really apply what they learn on their job or they dun have a smart brain to apply on their job even if they pass their degree, does it mean anything?

I recommend it. I am now self-studying for my CCENT next month with CBT nuggets

    Cybersecurity student here with one semester left. Last semester, I took 22 credits worth of computer classes, and two of them were Cisco 1&2. Let me tell you guys something - sitting in class and learning is great; however, teachers will go fast because you cannot cover the whole topic in great detail within 3 hours. Ended up getting As in the class but felt so rushed so I don’t remember much. Now it’s summer, I’m taking Cisco III and IV. I’ve been forcing myself to read every single slide off of netacad, putting everything on quizlet, with some hand written notes to understand concepts. However, my girlfriend says I’m doing too much. How do most people study? Class + self study + Odom’s books?

    Hey Chuck! Nice video as always. I am self-studying and I do agree with you. What do you recommend regarding practicing labs? Should I buy live equipment or which simulation program? Sometimes I feel that Packet Tracer is not enough, lot of thing not supported or not working properly. GNS3 does not support switches.

    • @theafricanstalkshow7070
      @theafricanstalkshow7070 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know why GNS3 doesn't support some of the devices like the router. The latest version of packet tracer has this configured from console by console message,which doesn't let you configure routers when u get into the global exe mode.

    Hi Chuck,
    I hope I don't sound pathetic asking this but can you make a video explaining how to self study for a CCNA or an MCSE? The best way when you are doing things how to understand what is going on and how to absorb and understand it? I am thinking of pursuing one of these certs but afraid to fail at it. Wonderful video by the way.

    Hey Chuck, very helpful videos man thanks!
    I have a question-- I agree with everything you said about self learning.. learning more, passive vs active..etc I am that person! The reason I'm considering classes or even the bootcamp is to be around IT people? Or people in this industry.. So that I may.. feel like I'm legit? or that I can belong in this industry? Is this a real reason? Does this make sense?
    I've worked in a totally different industry so my comfort level in this area may be on the low side.. Did you ever feel like this?
    After seeing your explanation, this is the only reason really I have for taking classes.. (which seems like the longer, more expensive route)
    Thanks!

      FernoRaj yes they will. I have 5 years of IT / worked for gateway tech support, geek squad, Apple CPU support, and Bestbuy. ZERO certs. I started in a call center making 11 dollars an hour troubleshooting gateway computers. My second to last job was at a regionally accredited universality in the Helpdesk position. I even trained new employees.. all with zero certs. I’m going to start studying for my certs now though. You can do it!

    Hello chuck i got a question. Imagine we are running bgp on R1 in our enterprise and it is connecting to ISP1 & ISP2. To route traffic inside our enterprise we are running eigrp. Now how can we tell eigrp that to get to any route outside our eigrp go to the bgp and it will get you out to internet. I did some research on google and it says we have to redistribute a default route into eigrp. Is this a correct way. Is this how its done in the enterprise networks. Do we need nat in this scenario and will portforwarding work? Thanks

    • @NetworkChuck
      @NetworkChuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can redistribute. You can also do a static route.
      Yes, you will still need NAT overload. Portforwarding will work as well.

I have the opportunity to get a router, but I'm not sure which would be good to carry me through my CCNA. My only requirement is that it be gigabit. Could you recommend one that will fit for me in the $100-200 range? Many thanks and love your videos, they really help my motivation towards self-study!

    Chuck; I landed an entry level IT Job for a company that manages 30 Clients and their IT needs.
    Should I shoot for the CCENT or CCNA? Im confused on why one would skip the CCENT and go for CCNA?
    how long will that CCNA cert last in terms of my lifetime being a network professional?
    Not asking hot long the cert is valid but in your opinion when do you expect the Network Engineer to die off completely?

    • @NetworkChuck
      @NetworkChuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey + Nick Flores!
      First, congrats on the job!
      Go for CCENT first. There are 2 ways you can go about getting your CCNA, the 1 Test or 2 Test method.
      1 TEST: CCNA Composite = CCNA
      2 TEST: ICND1 (CCENT) + ICND2 = CCNA
      CCNA Composite is really for those who have a) been in the industry for a while and just need to pass a test or b) need to recertify
      Since this is your first go around, start with CCENT (ICND1)
      Cisco is constantly evolving their exams to match the demands of the industry. Keep studying, keep learning and you'll be fine. Network Engineers are going anywhere but they are going to need to adjust to the changing tides.
