Actual description: In this video, I completely ignore the fact that I am wearing a heated suit, while explaining to you how to keep warm in Canadian winters by keeping active... I will likely release a video soon explaining the suit and some of the steps I took to get here.
The thumbnail of this video took an extraordinary amount of effort. It was -28C , my cameras floze, my tripod broke because of the cold and my phone and camera batteries go too cold and shut off. I ran home as fast as I could as my toes were frozen and extremely painful.
I now can say I seen a Canadian oompa loompa out in the wild this is a very rare occasion to catch this Canadian animal on camera lol
Can you imagine being a passer by witnessing this ! ... Seeing it on video is one thing, haha....
Joel!!! You're thumbnail is epic!

In the states you find a lot of them congregate at Walmart 😅
@@loweredexpectations4927 just don't freeze ALL THE WAY to death... Because that would suck.
I got a great idea from watching this... diesel heater backpack inside the suit with the intake puling air from outside. Maybe for the wheelbarrow, use the exhaust to heat water that you can circulate through the handles of the wheelbarrow to keep your hands warm. Great video and keep your stick on the ice.
Oooooh. I like this ! The original idea was to make a backpack heater, a few of my patreon members suggested this as well... but I never thought of having it in the suit ...
Now... the reason it hasn't happened yet is the whole 200C (or more) exhaust pipe.... but I may figure that out.
You are a born comedian!! This is SO funny!!! 😂🤣
Haha... thanks ! I was truly concerned that people wouldn't understand the humor, haha.
I'm just glad that Canadians are honest enough that you kept your camera.
Hah.... well ... Not all Canadians. You need to pick your spot and keep your eyes open. I'm not in a bad area of the city, but I have had my garage broken into as well as my vehicle several times.
I was expecting you to crack a grin at any moment, but you did a fantastic job. And as other have mentioned, Red Green would be proud. Keep your stick on the ice.
I think this is like the 10th Red Green reference... I'm honored ! It was very hard not to burst out laughing, believe me... I had to edit one part out where I was approaching a bus stop, there were people there and I lost it 🤣
You forgot to remind your fellow Canadians to keep some maple syrup on hand so they can pay for the diesel fuel and calories! 😜

Move the weight forward in the wheelbarrow to over the wheel
Make some yokes to free up your hands.
Put some Seebeck devices on the exhaust so you can power lights for safety etc.

You'd need a bigger balloon around you. That's your next house and suit in one then.
If you make it big enough to keeep your household stuff inside too, you won't get robbed when sleeping.
But you'd need a good safety chain for the wheelbarrow too. And a locking filler cap for the gas tank.

I want to thank you..after watching your videos it became obvious that these heaters have a very narrow sweet spot..and the balance of air .heat and fuel.is a delicate one..by suttle changes in choking the air intake to the chamber and watching the actions of the temperature I quickly overcame the problem of flame out that I was having..
I'm glad something I did helped ! Thanks for letting me know.
I will say that if you are having issues like that, you may have an issue with a blockage in your burn chamber. When I had issues where I had to choke my heater, the end result was almost always that I found a build up of carbon in the chamber.
If your heater is tuned and set up properly, it should run well without any of this fussing.
Cheers.
I was outta time. I forced it to run. I think its all ignorant. Im gonna go back to switches and relays and coffee maker thermal .
What im saying is i want to make a heater with no computer..
@@davidstevens7809 Haha... you can make it work, for sure. The original system has lots of safeties in place, to make sure it doesn't overheat and if it flames out, the fuel stops running, instead of leaking fuel.
@@davidstevens7809 There are ways to do this... I have been playing with it myself, but my way is not safe.
It is a good idea to have a system that can at least stop fuel flow if the heater stops burning, as this is going to happen at some point. An overheat shutdown would also be a good idea.
Only on Canada. Gotta get one for Ontario north. Indeed not only brilliant but hysterically funny. You missed your calling. All the best new year....

Where's the duct tape??
Haha... Red Green... Exactly ! . I may need some duct tape for holes I burnt in my suit !!
Well done Joel you are officially crazy...😉
Haha... this was the last step I needed to take to make it official ?
This has inspired me to build a diesel heater into a roof top cargo carrier for my car. I've had the idea for a couple of years and have been buying odds and ends I think I need to do it, but it's just getting started is the hard part for me.
The concept was for heat in the car for winter car camping, or heating an ice fishing tent, or maybe the garage. But I really like the heater hose in a big inflatable suit, might be easier than setting up an ice fishing tent.
It got down to -36C last week for me and I got a warning about a possible rolling black out due to the cold increasing power demand on the utilities, so I need to look into alternate ways to heat the home in case of emergencies
Hey.... I'm totally with you on the "hard to get started" thing.... I have that happen to me all the time. I can always come up with a better or different way, or some issue that I'm unsure of how I will deal with it.
This suit doesn't heat your hands, feet or face very well... though you could customize or have one made that worked better for that. I think I would choose the tent idea, as that way you can recirculate the air. The suit uses the air to stay inflated, so you have to force air in and can't suck it out....
It has no problem staying warm at -20 ish.... but at -30 all of a soulden you are on setting 10 instead of setting 1 or 2.
If you could make something that was portable between your roof carrier and hour house / garage, that would be great.
@@loweredexpectations4927 I would be running a hose from the roof carrier to the window of the car where I'd probably have some kind of panel to allow for in input and output hose. In the garage, I'd just let it run in the garage. Not sure how I'd deal with the exhaust though.
The garage is attached, so I could run the heated hose into the basement.
Either that, or I could try to run a separate unit on the outside like yours. My basement isn't finished, but there is a duct for a future bathroom fan. I could run the heated hose from the diesel heater into the house through there, and maybe a power line as well so I could keep the battery inside or use a 12V power supply. I don't know how I'd recirculate if I did it this way though
@@lemonherb1 It can sometimes be the "small details" that turn out not to be small at all. I was considering running my heater in my basement with the exhaust out my hot water tank vent ... It is a gas water heater, so the vent is a convection current vent like a fireplace. I'm sure I would get a lot of hate on the internet for that...
@@loweredexpectations4927 What about mounting the heater to your window? Use a sheet of plywood instead of drywall, cut a 5" hole and install a turret and mount the heater on the inside and have the exhaust and combustion intake and fuel supply on the outside?
@@lemonherb1 This could likely be done as a pretty easy pull in and out with a little creative engineering. I may give it a go.
That video was awesome.

HAHA... I wanted to do a backpack, and a few of my Patreon members recommended that... It may still happen, but the VERY hot exhaust wade me take this approach for now. Colin Furze... wow... that's a pretty huge complement, haha.
Can you do an experiment to try and design a way to make a diesel heater use less fuel by way of an injection system of some sort.
Technically you could do something like this... but it is much harder than it may first seem.
The biggest issue is the extremely small volume of fuel that these burn. On a larger heater this would be pretty easy to control, and this sort of how torpedo heaters work.
These heaters take 1000 pulses of the pump to burn 22ml of diesel. That is about two tablespoons. When you break it down, the level of precision that you would need to control flow would be pretty crazy ... This is precisely why they use what they call a "dosing" pump.
So while it could be done, it would mean running a high pressure pump, an very small and accurate injector with a much more sophisticated control system.
In the end diesel has X amount of energy per litre and these heaters are already VERY good at getting that energy out. The best thing you can do for efficiency, is to put a heat exchanger on the exhaust and scavenge all of your lost heat. I will be experimenting with this soon.
Don't underestimate the amount of power, the pump would consume.
You want to be able to run such a heater off the power grid, i assume
@@werner.x Yes... I have been toying with the idea of a 50W aquarium pump for air atomization and the SNA nozzle that I used last year. A high pressure pump will consume too much power, especially in the cold.
@@loweredexpectations4927 Thank you for the descriptive reply. Very interesting

You'd be a real hit at the Paris fashion show, but keep the hat.
Haha... thanks !
I suppose the next logical step would be to see if it's possible to package the heater, a battery, and a fuel tank into some sort of hard shell backpack. I'm also thinking that some kind of hot air fed hood arrangement might be beneficial. M3 make cheap disposable air fed respirator hoods with an integrated face visor for use in spray paint booths. I'm thinking one of those could be easily modified for this role. If the inside of the visor is in a hot air flow it PROBBABLY wouldn't steam up and freeze (well, possibly not TOO fast anyway).......... Though it could hinder any on route snacking. :D
I love the idea... The original idea I had discussed with patreon members was to build a backpack version.... The hot exhaust is the main issue with having it near a baggy suit... You need it shielded and the gasses directed away at all times. Still want to do it.
@@loweredexpectations4927 That's just made me think what you REALLY should be doing is running the exhaust through a water to air intercooler, sewing a significant amount of 6ish mm id surgical bungee hose all over a set of overalls and plumbed to a couple of water manifolds, putting this outfit on under your cold weather gear, then pumping the hot water around the hoses.
I'm not sure how you could regulate the temperature though. Maybe having a split loop running to something like an old car heater matrix out in the cold, then you could adjust how much water goes through that to lose heat or bypasses it to remain hot?
This is just sounding stupid now. I'm just trying to guesstimate how much hose that would need for decent coverage, how much water that much hose, an intercooler, and a heater matrix would hold, and how much that amount of water would weigh......... How strong are your legs? 🤣
@@Reman1975 LOL... I was talking about this with friends a few weeks ago (not in such detail) and when they started making fun of me I told them I should just do hot water IV drip 🤣.
Yes, regulating the temp would have to be done by having two loops, one as a bypass with a exchanger. I bought 16 feet of stainless exhaust and have some tests planned for what will and won't work... pushing the limits of cooling the exhaust in different ways.
Dark Michelin buddy, join dark side. OK idea, put diesel heater into backpack instead of wheelbarrow.
I have had a few patreon members suggest that... I may have to give it a try... The big thing there is making the exhaust safe...

You would either have to make sure that each line was the same length and the heaters were at the same height, or one heater wouldn't get enough fuel. You would of course, have to increase the fuel output by increasing HZ...
Some ECUs / motherboards are able to pump at 8hz, so that would be plenty for two heaters under normal operation. Cool idea.

@loweredexpectations4927 looking forward to it. Seems like vevor has been hooking you up. Hopefully they keep keep sending you new toys to show off.
@@johncollinsgrove1750 Yes... So far so good. Altho, it may be hard to explain to a chinese lady what my future idea is ... she's going to think there's an error in translation or I've gone completely mad.
@@loweredexpectations4927 well you better ask before before she sees this video. Lmao.
@@johncollinsgrove1750 🤣🤣🤣 True !
Layers always saved me, but sometimes you can overdo it. If you're sweating, it's too much.
That's the point of the layers. Take one layer off.
Haha... Yeah. The reality is that layering is a good thing... Unless you have a heated suit.
This is the truth.
Am I the only one hearing the old rainbow six siege loading music in the background?😂
Haha... I wasn't familiar, so I went and had a listen... I don't know 🤷♂️
Its definitely the hat. Lmao.
Unbelievable... eh ! So much gawking and laughter over a hat ...
this must get way too hot especially with the cheat code level hat
Haha... at -18C you have to keep it around setting 1 or 2 if you are moving around. If you are just relaxing you can turn it up a bit. 🤟
Hes canadian, confirmed.
What about a backpack version?
^.^
That was the original plan, some patreon members suggested this... the exhaust is areal problem... but I might go there.
The women don't find you handsome they might as well find a handy😅
A real Canadian Hero !
That was good, lol!!!
Thanks ! haha.
Haha! What's discharge air temp?
It's hard to say for sure... the body of the heater is only able to maintain around 125C ... as it is pulling in cold air. The colder it gets out, the less efficient it gets haha.
Can you burn used transmission fluid in the heater. Used fluid.
I have some, and I pan to burn it... I expect it to be bad, so I'm waiting for a spare burn chamber to arrive. Also warmer weather... it was -38C last night and I don't want to be dealing with a broken heater at those temps, haha.
Jugding from the accent i'm figuring you're down east or from down east and living west of manitoba, probably alberta, diesel is probably illegal in bc
Haha... Yup. I'm from Miramichi NB, Living in Calgary.
That’s hilarious
Haha.... Thanks !
I am curious !!! How warm was it inside the suit??
It is very warm... I will be showing some tests where I check temp and fumes... but it's over 20C .... The suit has zero insulation value, so sitting on something cold makes that part of your body cold ... I have spend at least 6 hours sitting outside in a lawn chair and that's not bad, but you kinda need to have the bubble of air around you at all times.
2kw backpack version
Absolutely ...A few patreon member have suggested this... Just need to make sure to vent that exhaust to a safe place !
My man 😂😂😂 im dying 😂
🤣 About a week after I got my heater, I have been wanting to do this.... and it finally happened !
@@loweredexpectations4927 i sure hope this will be a trend soon. 🤣
@@horvad I've had this idea for over a year and have been keeping it secret .... I'm sure someone will pick up on it and do a much better job than me... Better filming, editing etc.... but I wanted to do it first, haha.
Lmao this is good shit I love it
It keeps your body warm ! It's large enough so that you can pull your hands, head and feet inside, if you really work at it, haha.
I Cringed every time you walked past a Chainlink Fence .... Lol , Oh boy !
haha.... because it indicated a crime riddled neighbourhood ?
No sir , Cause you were going to snag your ass on the fence and it would be game over .. hahaha 🤣
@@Joe-hj6pg OH !! lol... you were imagining me blowing away like someone just let go of a fully inflated balloon !!
Bring that around Quebec and you may not make it home alive. Trudeau be watching.
I made a joke about Liberals in response to someone's comment the other day, and it got deleted ... I tried twice because I wasn't sure what was happening... The third time I left the joke out and it went through ... that's some pretty disgusting censorship.... Considering it was a pretty bland joke.
Fucking hilarious 😂
Love it ❤
Thanks !! I appreciate it. Did TH-cam ask you if you were sure that you wanted to say "fuck" .... they are getting out of hand with their censorship.
@@loweredexpectations4927
I'm a sailor, so I have the right to swear 😝
But, no. YT didn't ask anything. Guess they are getting used to my language...
@@Drunken.Sailor I suppose this is true ! I had two comments deleted the other day because I made a little joke about liberals .. Not even a mean one... just silly. Comments on my own videos, mind you... so that makes it even worse.
I joke about liberals all the time, and I don't think I've ever had a comment deleted.
Probably your Supreme Leader that has Google censoring the Canadian voices on TH-cam...
Oh I get it now!! The modern woke version Michelin Man costume!!
Oh shit !!.... Pure genius comment !! I guess when you live in that part of the world, you get a lot more woke pushed in your face...
By "your part of the world" I just me "not under a rock like Joel" 🤣
Seriously clever tho ! Well done.
@loweredexpectations4927 My part of the world, kommiefornia, is DEFINITELY more woke, but with Tredeau, Canuckistan is not far behind!
@@AtimatikArmy I'm surprised Trudeau allowed you to post this comment. In our current regime doesn't take kindly to saying anything but positive mindless support.
@@loweredexpectations4927 I can't believe that my comment made it past TH-cam's algorithm. I thought it wouldn't post!
LOL love the vid's
Thanks ! 🤟
Too funny
Thanks ! I appreciate it.
ROTFLMAO!!! Excellent video. This will definitely be shared.
What is that you are wearing?
Awesome ! Thanks 👍 ... It's an inflatable suit ... I had a lot to choose form, and picke this basic one... I have been planning this for a year and dieing to see if it would work ! haha.
What setting were you at and did it keep you warm?
Guess I shut the video off a couple seconds too soon so I could reply. 🙃
@@tjhouston4916 I had it at setting 3 for a short while and had to turn it down to setting 1. This was at -18C ...
I went out on a colder day and had to crank it up all the way to 10 (max) .... but when I say colder, it was -28C plus a strong wind.... My body was fine at this temp but my toes felt like they were going to fall off and my fingers, even with good gloves, were super cold.
@@tjhouston4916 I tricked you.
When I saw you in that, I laughed so hard. If you think that cold is terrible, you should come here where I live. We don't have that many minuses, but it would be much colder at +10 than at -16. We have a wind called Bura, it is the fastest wind on the whole planet, then you would see how cold it is. Not the temperature, but the feeling of coldness. people don't believe until they feel. Bura can blow at a speed of 248 km/h (69.0 m/s) th-cam.com/video/Rrxmmmldg9Y/w-d-xo.html
That sounds crazy... Thanks for the comment. I watched that video... how to people get anything done, haha.
