We own a 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid and a 2022 Lucid Air Dream Performance. I think this review of the Lucid Air tracks my experience of the car more closely than any other review I've seen, giving it the kudos it deserves as an exhilarating driving machine and a roomy, luxurious passenger conveyance, and the slams it still deserves on software issues even after a year of OTA updates. I would add that, with now over 16,000 miles on the odometers of our Plaid and our Air Dream (early production car no. 154), the Plaid has developed body squeaks and groans while the Air remains as solid as a bank vault. (The Plaid also had more fit/finish issues at delivery than the Air.) Long story short: the Plaid is our second Tesla and will be our last. The Air is our first Lucid, and our next vehicle purchase will likely be the Lucid Gravity SUV to replace our Honda Odyssey.
I got my Air GT in April before the GT Performance version came out. "Only" 816hp, but somehow that seems like enough. The computer stuff has quickly gotten better, my lane keeping works very well, but the key fob thing can be irritating. What I really enjoy most about the car is the ability to comfortably eat miles at full Texas speed from my DFW home (boring roads) to places such as the Hill Country, the Ozarks or Colorado, where the driving is more engaging. When the world turns warm and green again, I will head over to the Smokey Mountain area, another favorite of mine. When really pushed in the tighter stuff the car is simply amazing. BTW, CEO Rawlinson _was_ head engineer at Lotus. Chief designer Jenkins is responsible for the much admired latest MX-5 Miata. Lucid has an all-star cast.
@@J-_-S Yes, that's all anybody says about Rawlinson, but he had a long career in automotive before that. The Lucid Air GT is so damn good, and for the money I think I would take it over an EQS any day and I would take it over an 63 AMG any day. It's more pleasant to be in and it drives better.
I was able to test drive one recently in Northern California and it's an amazing car. They let me go into some tight twisty roads, and the handling was surprisingly great. My only gripe (and maybe it was my seating position) was that the A pillars seemed huge and visibility on the corners didn't seem great...
I only got to drive the roads around the headquarters in Fremont and a short freeway segment which was good, but the indicator was weird to me and I couldn’t get it quite right. Liked the thoughts about big power numbers and efficiency/range. I’ve studied electrical engineering back in the days, and the first thing you realize is an electrical component (take for example an electric motor or a transformer) it gets more and more efficient the bigger it becomes.
I ‘really’ want a car that takes design queue from classic Citroens b/c they are so damn gorgeous (DS, SM). So I am rooting for Lucid but unfortunately are way out of my price range. Given how small the cost differential is between low and high-power electric drivetrains, one wonders if we're about to have a race to the top (every vehicle is powerful) or the opposite (nickel-and-dimed for differences that cost the manufacturer next to nothing). I think we know the answer.
Oh no, it's the latter most BEV companies are doing the nickle and dame approach or bank on the fact Batteries all cost around 20% of MSRP to make vehicles that are are barebones at high price points.... We are getting way to far into trusting technology when you take away the buttons from the key fob that is what you call to far. I want the lock and unlock buttons so I know I locked it
They exist on the fob. I don't know why anyone would think they don't. They also exist in the app. You can use walk away lock, but you don't have to. The option is always there to manually lock it. And you know it is locked when the handles go in and the side windows fold, or you can press to lock it twice and it will beep.
I own a Grand Touring , There’s a problem with the Lucid fobs that basically makes it so that there’s always current being drawn from the little batteries, even when your key is in your pocket, with no buttons being depressed
I thought this went away with the 2.0 software update? I have not had to replace my batteries since, when previously I had to replace them once a month.
@TheSmokingTire I was suppose to receive mine q4 of last year (would of qualify for the 7500 dollars Federal tax credit. It's starting to look like q2-q3 this year. Horsepower is a function of WATTAGE. Wattage is gained by increasing battery size (wattage is voltage x amperage, adding cells will increase voltage OR amperage depending on how you wire them) so you get a shit ton of power with a bigger battery. That basically means you get range AND power, not range OR power. You get both. That also means more power = more weight.
It looks like the mirrors go up when you're standing between Zack and the mirrors. As if you're blocking the sensor from maintaining a connection to the keyfob, using your body.
@Queens GTO/Viper you'd think without all the regulations, people could come up with some cool things.... but yeah nah... let's make them all look like a futuristic car we all would have drawn when we were 4.
I think the best way to handle that proximity locking issue is to make it an optional choice. I believe that Ford has a way to disable proximity locking and I think that would be a good way for Lucid to solve the issue and not have to change the hardware
Yes, within reason. It is resistance to the wheels turning that makes a motor pull more power. all induction or PM motors draw very little power when freewheeling.. So if it takes let's say 14hp (14hp = 10.4kW)) to maintain 50mph on level ground (a realistic number), that's all the power any motor will consume to keep the car at that speed. Where the difference between a big motor and a little motor shows up is when you accelerate. When launching this Lucid its motors consume just over 783kW. A smaller motor asked to do the same will just get hot and let out the magic smoke.

The key fob proximity issue is easily solved by actually locking the car! Just press the fob once and it will lock and stay locked. I do this all the time and as long as I don't walk too far away, it will stay locked the entire time even when I am moving all around the car. Same goes for walking away. Simply lock the car yourself. It is always an option. You make it sound as if it is not available. If you rely on walk away lock, it will continue to lock and unlock if you remain in the vicinity. You can also press the driver door handle (at the point closest to the front) to lock the car if you do not carry the fob and don't want to open the app.

I love so much about what they do. The packaging makes Tesla look clumsy, and those make Mercedes and BMW into EV fools. I can see myself having a Lucid if my other car is a dependable petrol stationwagon or SUV. And if in an ideal world Lucid made a wagon or I have mine chopped to one, the other car could be like a Rivian R1S or maybe better a petrol one after all. 5 car garage I'd be able to pick out somehow though, I'm sure.
1000 hp EV sedans are stupid. The manufacturer could make them 1000 hp capable but restrict the driver’s ability to use more than 400 hp worth. Sell that to the masses then release an unrestricted sports car for fun. The point of EVs are to save the planet but consuming massive amounts of electricity, especially considering a lot of areas still burn coal, defeats the point
This looks great in pictures, looks even better in person. The Lucid Air is a stunning vehicle and MASSIVE. Anyone who gets this luxury EV is going to be very happy with their choice
I am only interested in EVs in one pedal driving mode. When you have to step on the brake pedal, it reminds me too much of driving a torque converter automatic. When it's one pedal, it feels sufficiently engaged to me. That said for a freeway cruise I'd probably take it out of one pedal mode.
Matt and Zach, do companies ever send someone to give you a short tutorial? I'm a Sales Consultant and a critical part of my job is teaching people to use their cars, I would think they would di the same for you.
I recently used Off The Record (the sponsor) for a ticket my 17yo son got. He got a negligent driving ticket after an accident where he spun out in the rain. All I did was upload a picture of the ticket, pay a small fee that was a tiny fraction of what the ticket was and that was it! I just got a message the other day that it was completely dropped and I could not possibly be happier with an app on my phone! I had no idea if it would actually work and I was a little nervous about it to be honest but god damn! With already losing the car he worked so hard for, I didn't want that ticket to make it worse for him. I'm so happy I listened to the podcast and gave Off The Record a try!

pdals better push back the more you push into them to be easy to hold position and discourage over powering and overbraking and to know how much power is left to use especially asyou dont have engine sound.. although being bale to put in fake sound can help , base heavy sound correlating with torque, rpm correlateing with high pitch sound, loudness correalting with energy output ... and pssobily seperate sound from each powered wheel, possibly a much quiter base heavy sound for brake power level used.
"Streaming Sirius XM" is an oxymoron. Whoever thought of putting that in a car should be fired. The SOLE reason I have Sirius XM is for when I'm out of decent cell data range.
It's actually nice in the flesh. I would fire these interior theme folks. I wanted a back carpet with a tan interior, no can do, light woodwork with a tan interior, no can do, matching front and rear seat color, no can do.
The faster accelerating 2023 Model S Plaid costs substantially less (starting at $115K, or $140K fully equipped) with better software, great build quality and the charging network. Buying a Tesla means you'll soon have access to Starlink (the company that's been providing free internet for Ukraine). Tesla had 44% growth in 2022, (down from 95% growth in 2021) while other automakers are flat or declining. On the other hand, Lucid's primary investor/owner is the Saudi Arabian sovereign investment fund with 61% ownership.

If you are spending $200,000 on an EV NOBODY cares about the range. just like if you are spending $200,000 NOBODY cares about the MPG. just saying.
Lucid Air has 500 Miles real World Range !!! Lucid is 900 W technology ! Its Untachable . Cleaner and faster then Any Ferrari or a Bentley ! Lucid is King !
I generally use my phone to lock the car and unlock it when it is in my garage.
The car seems amazing but I wish it didn't have to have that cut line on the rear quarter. It's really not good looking in my opinion.
i'm gonna buy this car soon , black is beaaaaaaaast
I love so much about what they do. The packaging makes Tesla look clumsy, and those make Mercedes and BMW into EV fools.
I can see myself having a Lucid if my other car is a dependable petrol stationwagon or SUV. And if in an ideal world Lucid made a wagon or I have mine chopped to one, the other car could be like a Rivian R1S or maybe better a petrol one after all. 5 car garage I'd be able to pick out somehow though, I'm sure.
LET'S GOOOOO LUCID FAMILY 🙋♂️❤🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🕺🕺💎💎💎💎ADDING ON AND HOLDING STRONG HOLD THE LINE EVERYONE STAY FOCUSED AND DISCIPLINE 😉👍😁✌
I the only one noticed...didn't rain in this Lucid.......
Limiting HP via software doesn't make the manufacturing of the car cheaper.
This looks great in pictures, looks even better in person. The Lucid Air is a stunning vehicle and MASSIVE. Anyone who gets this luxury EV is going to be very happy with their choice
This thing just looks so dopey, almost like they left it out in the sun too long.
You saw Pearl Jam? I envy you! :D
@2:28 _l'm Down On The RANGE_
I don't ever see myself buying an ev
I will Take Lucid Air ''over Bentley or a Ferrari any Day ! Lucid is Cleaner and Faster too !
Sooooooooooooo why are the seats different colors?
BMW has the same problem with locking and unlocking with proximity. I
Please get the sapphire for a review.
Very cool, but strange!
tired of ads? tough luck. here's another
The delicious sounding V8 intro has never been less appropriate than in this video.
$180k American dollars.... damn son ,you can get a plaid with more power, tech and access to the Tesla supercharger for $60k less
I am only interested in EVs in one pedal driving mode. When you have to step on the brake pedal, it reminds me too much of driving a torque converter automatic. When it's one pedal, it feels sufficiently engaged to me. That said for a freeway cruise I'd probably take it out of one pedal mode.
This is a great one pedal car.
I'm so happy I listened to the podcast and gave Off The Record a try!
if mclaren and lotus emira can do hydrallic steering... i expcted theyd do that with a electric addition to it, or just buy from mclaren and sell it as option.
pdals better push back the more you push into them to be easy to hold position and discourage over powering and overbraking and to know how much power is left to use especially asyou dont have engine sound.. although being bale to put in fake sound can help , base heavy sound correlating with torque, rpm correlateing with high pitch sound, loudness correalting with energy output ... and pssobily seperate sound from each powered wheel, possibly a much quiter base heavy sound for brake power level used.
Uh, it does take more current to turn a bigger motor, if at no load. But in the case of an EV, its very little, so ok
"Streaming Sirius XM" is an oxymoron. Whoever thought of putting that in a car should be fired. The SOLE reason I have Sirius XM is for when I'm out of decent cell data range.
Even on the video the fit 'n finish of the exterior panels seems shockingly bad.
Really compare to the king of poor fit and finish the King of Gap is the Tesla
Range, range, range...... 👍
Porsche Taycon GTS Gran Turismo! Best of the Best
Couldn’t get thru the episode. Way to many commercials
Then spend the $9.99 on TH-cam Premium, I haven't seen a commercial or ad in years. "If you have the means I highly recommend picking one up." 🤌
@@Sir.VicsMasher I appreciate the recommendation. I posted to help the fellas find a good balance.
Dream car 🫡✅
Dual color zone interiors look like a half assed repair job. It’s like the interior version of mismatched body panels.
It's actually nice in the flesh. I would fire these interior theme folks. I wanted a back carpet with a tan interior, no can do, light woodwork with a tan interior, no can do, matching front and rear seat color, no can do.
👎🏿
The faster accelerating 2023 Model S Plaid costs substantially less (starting at $115K, or $140K fully equipped) with better software, great build quality and the charging network. Buying a Tesla means you'll soon have access to Starlink (the company that's been providing free internet for Ukraine). Tesla had 44% growth in 2022, (down from 95% growth in 2021) while other automakers are flat or declining. On the other hand, Lucid's primary investor/owner is the Saudi Arabian sovereign investment fund with 61% ownership.
Matt doesn't like Tesla cars.
Tesla Plaid Ugly Unsafe Steering wheel car . Ugly Horrible build quality too ! Lucid is 900 W technology ! Lucid Air is Unteachable . Its the King !
Less for more, is this a “ add lightness“ Thing
If you are paying $200,000 for a car i doubt you are ever driving the full range of the car. Drive 400 miles? Nah, they taking a 1 hour flight.
$180 😳
Soleless E-MACHINE..... Fiñ
at least Lucid has better design than Rivian.
I hate to be "that guy," but Matt is like twice the size of Zack. The weight distribution on the second take shifted considerably. The constant locking/unlocking thing? Happens in my 7 year old BMW all the time when I'm washing it.
