  • The annual process of antifouling is upon us and we need to get stuck In.
    It's not a simple process with so many products on the market, and this stuff doesn't come cheap. So we don the PPE and get on with a job that marks the beginning of our season.
    In this weeks episode we are back from the Annapolis Boat Show and straight back into some boatworks! Now…this is the first time WE have actually done the antifouling…so here goes to learning on the fly and getting the job done!
    Zephyr looks amazing at the end so I would say it’s a job well done! (Mostly by James!! 😍😍) so well done James on getting Zephyr back In the water so soon!
    Curious to know How to antifoul a sailboat with no experience in 3 days this Is your video!

    Guys another simple tip that makes life so easy when anchoring and knowing how much chain you have out. Instead of painting every whatever feet with the same colour and potentially losing count especially at night, get some small different coloured cable ties and colour code the depths. You will find the ties survive the chain gypsy on the winch!

      Great idea Alan. James has already written it down and is off to the shop tomorrow. 👍

      Nice! Where are u hauling out in Victoria? I’m sure there are quite a few boatyards there! Good luck with all the boatworks! We def have to do one this year and re do the bottom paint! ⛵️🤩Have fun! Let us know how it goes!

    I bet you picked up 2 knots of boat speed with that new paint. Looks like the bottom turned out great! I would suggest that you wear a mask the next time you are working with silica filler. If you inhale the silica it will stick to you lungs and it can't be removed. Inhale enough of it and your lungs won't be able to absorb oxygen very well. Congrats on doing a bottom job in 3 days, that is an incredible amount of work accomplished in 72 hours.

      Hi Tim! Thank you for the support! James did so so well! Pretty proud of him for smashing it out so fast! Thank you for all the amazing tips about the silica! We really had no idea but makes sense since it’s all chemicals! Pretty scary stuff! 😧 What make is your boat? And do you normally use the same stuff for yours to cover the fiberglass!? 🤩⛵️🤩

      Natalie and James: We actually spoke in Annapolis. You were both very generous with your time in the creator tent, and it was great to meet you both. I am doing a complete restoration of an Alden 44 cutter. My boat was built in 1977 and is hull #1 of the line. The boat is located in the US near Duluth, MN, which is the western end of Lake Superior. Over the past two summers I removed the original teak decks and record the entire deck(all new core and 'glass). I have also record several sections of the cabin top. Next summer the decks will be faired and the boat will be completely painted...cabin top, cockpit, deck, topsides and bottom. I have learned more about resin, hardener, silica and respirators than I ever wanted to know. I hope to have the boat in the water in the spring of 2023 and have it fully functional by 2024. Once it is done the door (or hatch) is wide open if you want to come sail where water is too cold to swim but it keeps the beer a near perfect temp!! Cheers!!

      That’s right! Of course we did chat! It’s weird on TH-cam as can only see name and small picture….so we couldn’t tell by that alone!! That restoration is no joke! No wonder you know so much about all the resin, silica’s antifouling business!! An amazing project! We would love to come visit and sail for sure! 🤩⛵️

    How many gallons of bottom paint did it take?

  • @aquious953
    @aquious953 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Can paint with copper coat. Lasts 10yrs. Just have to wipe it off every once and awhile. $3,000 for the paint. Worth it I think.

    • @chrisgoldstein5167
      @chrisgoldstein5167 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could you mix grinder copper into your normal paint for the same effect or will their be a chemical reaction?

    • @aquious953
      @aquious953 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @chrisgoldstein5167 some people do that. The more expensive ablative paints have a pretty high copper content. Adding copper could negatively affect how well the paint sticks to the bottom. Just do 2 coats of the multiseason ablative. Make sure to let the first coat dry before you put on the second coat and let the second fully dry before splashing.

    Any videos anywhere on how people paint bottoms but then remove the frames and paint over the spots they rested on? Can you describe the process or show the video link somewhere?

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the spots that the jack stands are covering, the yard guys will move the stands over slightly one at a time once the area you’ve painted is dry. Or they will place another stand next to the one that is to be moved. The boat doesn’t move or shift when one stand is moved. Then you paint away.
      For the bottom of the keel, generally you paint what your able to, and then when they lift it, you slap on a couple coats before they launch. If it’s a warm climate, the anti fouling will dry real quick.

    Any real benefit other than convenience to paint a bottom with a spray gun rather than rollers?? One last longer than the other? If so, Why???

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question mate. I’m not sure as I’ve only used a roller. But if you find some info about it, please let me know. 🤟

    I am curious, what is the speed difference between a hull full of barnacles and a clean newly painted hull?

    • @SailingZephyr

      Hey hey - cheers for watching. I’m not sure I understand?

    • @colinboniface194
      @colinboniface194 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      up to a 25% reduction in hull performance, and additionally, you loose the crisp response of the rudder... Full of barnacles is like driving a lemon...
