    Great perspective. I love the slight compression on the way in! Totally. Track with compression makes so much sense.

    Converters are overrated now days.
    Make a blind test if you don’t hear a difference 9 out of 10 times … placebo has it.

    Hmm very interesting topic. Getting a proper mic placement is of course crucial . I like to use compression but more for the box tone of the compressor . Also I noticed that singers and musicians play differently when hearing themselves through an la2a or a Fairchild because of the transformer saturation then I split left dry and right treated. I always hated hearing the conversion with the lynx aurora but with my investment in RME m32 pro I can bear an extra post recording insert. I also have a 2 bus mix insert always up and running when tracking. This gets my guitars and synths properly eq’d when overdubbing and lets me use my forsell converter. I always think that my project might go somewhere else and what would I want the next engineer to have on his tracks. This is however very dependant on the music. I personally never eq classical, never compress jazz, and heavily process pop and rock. As a sound engineer your job is that people enjoy your input and feel creative building their song with a proper headphone mix and providing the mixer with a usable mix with minimum plugins. When people enjoy your workflow that’s repeat business. I would say process before and do it tastefully. If in doubt don’t or provide a treated/dry signal.

    @Barry Johns - Threre actually a reason to commit DSP. One, to capture your sound and get closer to your final preferred sound. Two - UA of course, offer impedance and other changes via Unison processing. This doesn't only happen in the digital domain.

      Unison is a different story. That said there would be zero sound difference between adding that plug-in before tracking or after. What’s going on with their unison preamps is a different matter.

      Thank you so much for the support. It’s a Fireface UFX+, and I just paired it with a Ferrofish Pulse 16 MADI.

    Hey, I've been looking for my next upgrade for an interface, currently using an Audient ID44 but it has very little IO, I was eyeing up the Motu 16a BUT I was wondering if you would say it's worth it to spend the extra on the RME Fireface UFX+... it has less IO but my main concern is the Converters, wondering if the converters on the RME are noticeably better and can't find an answer online.

    Hello Barry! Thank a lot for your content! I'm a traditional musicians with a home studioand , some analog hardware and some digital equipment . Recently I did a interface upgrade from maudio profire 2626 (2011) to antelope discrete 8 SC(2019) How can I considerate a good converter ? I mean there are numbers for it? or How can i know if I have a good converter?

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Antelope makes very good converters, especially for the price. They are known to have stability issues though. As many who love them and say they are rock solid, the same number will say they have all kinds of driver issues. If it working for you, you are good.

    Sensible advice. If it doesn't sound "good" move the mikes or change them (or change the strings, tweak the amp, change the singer, according to the situation 😁) instead of EQing. That's the basis.

    • @andywickett22
      @andywickett22 ปีที่แล้ว

      When tracking vocals, I like to use EQ to roll off some low end before hitting the compressors

    • @FLH3official
      @FLH3official ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andywickett22 Yes, I would say this one case when it could be a good idea to EQ before, it's more cleaning than EQing in fact.

    Hi Barry did you keep your pulse 16 converters and how do you use them,do you use them offf your direct outs ,you track with them only ,or do you track and then mix down from your 8 outs off your board,great show by the way
