VH41DE vs VH45DE: Which One is Better?

The biggest differences between the VH41 and the VH45 are the differences in stroke and displacement, as well as the better flowing heads on the VH41. The VH41 is also packaged a bit smaller and is ultimately more over-engineered.
Both engines are pretty lightweight for their displacements, they both have pretty strong bottom ends, and they both make a decent amount of power and torque for their size, especially compared to many American V8 engines of the time. Because of how similar they are, I don't think it's really fair to definitively say that one engine is clearly better than they other.

Actually the US version of the VH41 was a weaker engine than the VH45 and did not include items such as the engine girdle. The JDM version of the VH41 did have all the internals of the VH45 including dual chain timing.

I guess I would try to get a later version of the VH45 and see if the heads of the VH41 are interchangeable. If they fit, The engine should make more than 10% additional power with just a tune and a simple exhaust.

Followed Infiniti/Nissan at the time and have owned an 01 FY33 Q45 since 2004. It was commonly accepted at the time the reason for the lowering of displacement from the VH45 to the VH41 was mostly due to the RE4 transmission. This is the same transmission as the Z32TT which has similar power, but significantly less off the line torque (at least in stock form) than the VH45. The early Q45s with the VH45 were limited to a 2nd gear take off from a dead stop to protect the trans from the low end torque of the V8. After complaints of the poor performance this resulted in, Nissan changed the TCU programming in 93 (going from memory so I may be off by a year or two). This greatly improved performance, but also led to transmission issues in many cases. The decrease in displacement in the VH41 combined with the changes to the heads moved the power band up in the rev range and reduced stress on the trans. I currently have 217k on the original trans in mine and it is still pulling strong. Admittedly, with the slow 2-3 shift the RE4 is known for.
There is another big issue with the VH family that was not mentioned in the video. It is EXTREMELY important to perform the scheduled maintenance for the o-rings on the injectors. Due to the design of the fuel system, if one of these o-rings fails the fuel system will dump fuel into the cylinder and hydrolock the motor. This is a more common problem on the VH45. As with many of the common faults, Nissan tried to address them in the VH41, but with increasing ethanol content in fuels even these changes only last so long. If you are looking to do an engine swap, do this bit of maintenance while you have the motor out of the car and it may save you a ton of headaches down the road.
I have long thought the VH family may be one of the last undiscovered gems from the JDM heydays and the F50 and FY33 Q45 to be two of the most under rated cars of their era. But please, if you are looking for an engine for a swap, please don't trash a good, running Q45 to get it. You can find pulls of the VH motors for a few hundred dollars all day long. These cars truly were over engineered and designed to last for the ages, find a total or a pull for your swap, and put some sweat equity into restoring the running Q45. Remember, with few exceptions, almost every classic car was considered junk at some point in their history.

    Nice quick vid dude.
To add; VH motors are generally not popular because there is next to no aftermarket support, and a factory rebuild gasket kit can cost 1000$+, and they aren't very common.
The first generation 41 was japan-only, where later international iterations were progressively detuned with different spec for cost reasons.
41 and 45 heads are not interchangeable across blocks.
Piston integrity and rotating assembly oil pressure are the weak links, when force-feeding past 500hp. Stock valve springs are inadequate for 7800+rpm. (which the 41 can easily exceed otherwise) The rest of the longblock is good for whatever you dare throw at it.
45 used dual timing chain, 41 is triplex with idlers
the exhaust is the breathing chokepoint on either stock engine; cast log manifolds are ok but quickly restrictive.

Gentleman's agreement cap was 276 HP. Japan uses metric, PS. 276 HP is 280 PS. 280 HP would at least around 285 or 286 PS. What's funny is Japanese word for horsepower is bariki (kanji characters are literally "horse" and "power") and it is used for both PS and HP, it can be confusing sometimes. Japan probably still be using the PS unit to measure power, so keep in mind.

You can put the UpRev on the VH41. The stock intake on the 41 is something like 4" in diameter. All you need to do is replace the airbag with the cone and you should be set. I would be really surprised if you gained much off the stock set up though. It is a fairly free flowing set up.

The 41 is better if you want a no-mod boost-ready engine, as it came from the factory with 10:1 forged pistons... but it's not recommended if you live in a cold climate region. Extended warm up times are a pain. You should never use more than 1/3rd throttle with forged pistons until the engine is warmed to operating temperature (there's even a clear warning for this in the 98-01 Q45 manual).

So, a Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, etc. imported to Japan is considered JDM there? LOL. Manufactured in Japan means JDM. The car was designed and built in/for THEIR market and the U.S. imported them. Camrys, Accords, Altimas, etc. manufactured in America are still considered as imports, but I'm not sure if they'd be referred to as JDM. A right hand drive version imported to the US would be considered JDM though.

    • @ryantzer
      @ryantzer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@midrangetorque You apparently don't get it either. If the Corvette, Camaro, and Mustang were built for and sold new in the US, they are USDM regardless of where they end up being shipped to or sold later on. If they were sold new in Japan then they would have to meet all the emissions and safety laws in Japan for that model year, and they would be JDM vehicles.
Manufactured in Japan does NOT mean a vehicle is JDM.
