The first lS1 engines did have some cylinder bore and ring issues. That they rectified the issue by the time the last batches were built. The lS3 has more capacity and no inherent design issues. So straight from the factory the lS3 is the clear choice. But when rebuilding engines comes into play it is open for conjecture. 😉😉😉😉😉
I love my old LS1 ,, It’s done nearly 300,000 Klms And it still pulls like a bull in spring, Mind you I change the oil every 5-6 thousand ks Keeps it running smoothly 👍⁉️😂🤣
LS7 is my favorite of all of them, but the Lm7 5.3 is probably the strongest, and the LSX-R V10 is the most intriguing of all of them. Factory engine that got shut down by GM in the early 2000's cause of who knows what. Also all the Sub engines like L99, L92, lm7,lq9, LLY, LY6 etc. Are all Ls engines because they all have the "LS" block design, just different cubic inches and engine materials
No reason to watch the video. LS3 hands down. There is nothing better about an LS1. LS3 has better: Block strength (rotocast from 2009 and up) Block breathing More displacement 376 vs. 346 Rectangle LS7 STYLE heads with better valve angle and larger valve size. Stronger castings Better intake manifold Better exhaust manifolds DOD for better efficiency That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
if you can find one and also depending where you are, some country's used them like australia, but then again it comes down to Oe parts very expensive compared to aftermarket parts for the LS1, even the L98, L77 6lt engine has better power and better support aftermarket wise, cheers :) Spend a couple grand on a L98 or L77 and you have at least 400 HP at the rear wheel's, but spend the same on the LS3 6.2 Lt, if you have a stock car and you just get to that much power, if you get my drift ? Also depends where you take your car to have these aftermarket upgrades, like headers, OTR, tune etc. :)
Just a FYI, Gen4 also has much stronger connecting rods. You actually can swap Gen4 rotating assembly into a Gen3 which is popular for budget boost builds because of the stronger rods from the factory
@@Dustrunnersauto I have a set of Gen3 and Gen4 in my garage, I'll be sure to cover the differences this summer when my project is in full swing. First look, there's a significant difference between the two generations.
@@Dustrunnersauto also FYI only 6.0 and larger gen 4 engines have the rec port heads. the 5.3 and 4.8 still have cathedral because the intake valves are so large on the rec port heads they wont fit the smaller bores.

Bang for the buck wise you can't beat the 5.3 lm7 truck motor . They're super cheap there's millions of them around and they can hold a dump ton of boost on a completely stock motor . a healthy stage 3 turbo cam a 76mm turbo port and polish and some 80 lb per hour injectors a better fuel pump and you got a reliable 800 horsepower vehicle . Give it a good forged crank shot peened rods a good set of main bearings healthy cam and some bigger valves maybe a set of roller rockers and some beehive springs and a really good set of pistons and you can run quite a bit of nitrous on it as well . There's quite a few articles out there about how well the 706's actually work and why . As well as dyno proof to back it up . I think super Chevy did the article . Make no mistake there is no replacement for the strength of an iron block . No matter what you do with the truck motor you can be ballin on a budget .
I'm building a daily driver pro touring track car that I can beat and have fun with. I'm mot sure witch motor would be best. Budget is 15k . I will need everything motor ,trans., cooling .driveshaft. fuel tank ect. and as much power as I can get, I would like to boost it but not sure if realistic with only 15k. Or have it built for boost down the road? looking at 6.0 iron block for about 1500k or I found 2011 vet .LS3 for 4k. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I would like to have your opinion on this? thanks Chris
Ls3 is my pick before watching. I owned a ls1 and it had a minor oil leak by bad design around main sea area. They made a fix later on but just because the ls3 doesn’t have this issue I would pick it plus the 6.0. And no mention of ls9...
Cars leak around rear main seal on cars if left sitting for long periods of time and that is the same for all cars , so dont sit your car for long periods of time. I know this is what you were doing . Rear main seals on all cars get hard if left sitting
I just sold my '00, Z28, it was a solid 13.40's quarter mile car. It was an all stock automatic with the GU5 performance axle. I bought a '08, LS3 Corvette, 6 speed automatic, it has Corsa exhaust and a Corsa air intake. I haven't had it to the track yet, but, the LS3 makes my LS1 seem pretty tame. I'm hoping for some 12:40's when I hit the local drag strip this summer.
Hi thanks you for proofing that I was right about a LS 3 engine is better and faster than a LS 1 engine . And thanks for letting me knowing that there are LS 4 to LS 7 engines out there in the world guy !
I already did a swap in my corvette and first of all even in my 1997 c5 corvette it was not a cable driven throttle body it is electric. Secondly I was able to get 700RWHP from the lS-3 but then a rod literally blew a fist sized whole in the block. This happened after roughly 1200 miles were on it. If it sounds like a driveshaft is loose you might end up blowing up your engine. I then decided to do a LS-2 STEEEL block, bored out .60 over with a Vortech V7 capable of +1,200 (not quite there yet). The LS's are very old school technology and not much has really changed as far as the set up, best damn engines ever.
LS1, not too many differences, not even a liter more, lighter, and you can easily upgrade the top end to flow better, personally, mast heads, ls9 cam, and ZR1 super charger is plenty, stock bottom end holds up fine, Ls1 was waaaay before its time
Thanks for the info, here in Puerto Rico theres a big scene of muscle cars and europeans and japanese cars that would happily fit an LS in them , shipping its expensive here so for a v8 these are pretty lightweight, not to mention the benefit of it being lightweight in vehicle Driveability
The valve springs are the biggest limitation for the LS1. Change them for the LS6 springs (and cam) and you are good to go with reliability. LS1's had cable TC to end of 2004, ETC from 2005.
I own a 1963 corvette roadster which I Installed a 2002 LS 1 engine all aluminum 5.7 about ten years ago. To want to upgrade is out of the question. The LS 1 in my car has plenty of h.p. and good gas mileage along with being more than enough in performance. I'm not interested in being a street outlaw
Maybe I’m wrong but I was always told that if you take a ls1 block machined and stroked it to the same displacement of the ls3 with ported cathedral heads you would have more compression which equals more power. Please correct if I’m wrong. But I do have a TSP 418 stroker with cathedral ported PRC heads and supporting mods and 6.2 Z’s can’t touch me. Once again all N/A with supporting mods nw 102 tb fast 102 intake nice BTR stoker cam etc.
I have had both an LS1 and LS2, my GTO had an LS1 and that car was fast, it had 350 hp and was what the 2004 Corvette used. My Corvette has an LS2 , it has 400 hp and it is fast too, I can't say the LS2 has noticeably more power, my 2004 GTO was right there with the 2005 and 2006 GTO's that had the LS2, I know a 2004 GTO is often $4,000 less than the 2005 or 2006 for the extra 50 hp and the more "sporty" look they gave the car. I liked the 2004 cause it had a nice flat hood and blended in with traffic, but I recall the 1st time I noticed a GTO I was in a drive through and I heard a healthy V8 boom when the car ahead of me started, I looked and it appeared to be a single exhaust out on 1 side but it wasn't , it was dual, just sleeper. The GTO's had interior quality beyond anything we get here in the US from GM, my 2007 Corvette's interior is like Mattel makes them for GM, I love the driveline though.
I am a ls1 owner of a 2002 ss camaro from slp .. came with ls6 bottom small block .. with ls6 runnersadded ported and polish 241 heads from jegs co.p cam kit with biggest lope without destory the motor even ruining lightly until tune.. soon to be done I want to forge bottom and the rods.. should be fine even with stick ls6 bottom end
Of those, LS3. I have a 6.0 Gen IV aluminum block 400 code L76 in my 07 truck. This is considered an LS2 type engine - the car version is the LS2, the truck has a longer intake and makes like 4 more HP. I love this engine. It can be cammed and strengthened into a more powerful version, relatively cheaply. peace
@PRN 123D No it's far from a common LS7 problem. Yes, there were a batch of valves put in to some LS7 heads that were prone to failure. This was taken care of, and the actual truth is that LS7 heads were never losing valve heads left and right. It strikes me as somewhat common that a lot of people will talk about the LS7 and dropped valves. However, most of these people have never experienced it themselves, nor do they know anybody who has. They have usually never owned an LS7, or much less wrenched on one. All in all, the LS7 is a great engine, and if you ever find yourself buying one, do so without worry of the valves. If you get a used one and plan to run a hot cam in it, upgrade the valves and springs as you normally would.
@@AB-80X They stopped making the LT engines in 97 or 98 because it had a piss poor distributor/water pump design. The LS was the next generation AFTER the LT.
@@ivanlaney2336 What the he.... Are you so far behind that you've missed the fact, that the LS successor debuted in the C7 Corvette in 2013? In case you are unaware, the Gen V SBC is called the LT, again. Will you also argue that the LS6 was not an engine for the C5, but only a 454 from the 70's? No GM car has been built with an LS engine since 2015 when the trucks and suv's switched to the 5th gen SBC, the LT. The LT you speak of, is basically to the Gen I SBC what the Gen IV LS was to the LS 3rd gen. Same basic platform, but slightly updated. The current LT is to the LS what the LS was to the Gen I/II SBC.
For application in aircraft, which require a speed reduction geared drive and are limited to 4500 rpm, a LS 3 with LS 1 heads could be optimal. Has/can this been done?
Sometimes it's hardly worth upgrading from an LS1 to an LS2 engine because then HSV increased their power output in my model (2002-2004) they got up to 285 Kilowatts just from a change to a higher flowing exhaust system & headers as well as tuning which was 40 kilowatt increase from the stock 245 kilowatt twin exhaust engine. Mine is on par with the stock L76 (6 litre V8) which was fitted from 2006 onwards with the DOD deactivated up until 2009 when they switched it on,HSV did however fit the LS2 between 2004-2006. My LS1 is a 2002 model & Holden ordered all of the LS1's with the more aggressive EGR cam (1999-2000 Camaro camshaft) all the way through but they ordered them with the higher flowing LS6 intake fitted from 2000 onwards. It's particularly the case with the 300 kilowatt LS1 engine (Callaway engine), it's hardly worth upgrading to the 6.2 litre LT1 which has a 304 kilowatt stock power output unless you do at least a tune & exhaust upgrade on that engine !
If I had a C5 Z06, I would modify the stock LS6. To keep it period correct. If it was a regular Vette, hells yeah it would be an LS3, or even bigger LSX. Currently I own a Coyote, and a power adder on a Coyote is a beautiful thing. But, my next purchase will be an LS or LT product. Can’t get past the displacement, the torque hit from a L based motor is great. Friend built a bottom end for his Grand Sport, cammed it, and did a blower, and other ancillaries. 780 to the wheels, and 715 torque. The hit off the line and the pull through the gears sold me. My next vehicle will be a C5 Z06 or a C6 GS or Z06.
Know Bull5hit beefier internals on the LT4 only. LT1 is the same as LS3 for internal’s strength. If you’re not running meth injection on the New LT series engines the the valves will get dirtied up pretty quick.

Hey, what do you think of cast iron truck 6.0 sandwiched with ls3 heads and intake? Actually how much pain in the ass is it to put together? Any advises are welcome, thanks
LS3 > LS1/LS6 The only LS1 variation that holds a candle to the LS3 is the 5.3 & 4.8 truck motors. They are heavier but they can take the abuse of forced induction, and they are CHEAP. LS1/LS6 NA = 450-500 rwhp max LS1/LS6 FI = 550-600 rwhp max I haven't seen any LS1 engines make over 600 rwhp and not break. 5.3 / 4.8 FI = 700-750 rwhp max Pushing 750+ is when they fail LS3 NA = 500-550 rwhp max LS3 FI = 630-680 rwhp max Pushing further is when they fail The only reason you end up with a LS1/LS6 is because the vehicle you have came with it. If money was no object, you buy a LS3 or LSX block. If money is tight, you do what you can with your LS1/LS6 till it blows up. Then you go get yourself a 5.3 for $500, spend $1,500 making it "bullet proof", then spend $5,000+ on forced induction.
I just like to hot rod around so I'm thinking about doing an ls1 in my Yukon. But I also think about doing an lq9 as well. Or just put a built new 5.7 block and heads with 330 hp for 2400. Plus whatever a new intake and headers that will support 330 HP. Then it will have an original feel to it. You know? That would be an easy install.
@@Dustrunnersauto Yep, and its cylinder wall thickness beats all the LS variants ( not the 4.8 ofcourse) and any of the opposing manufacturers engines.

Listen people ls1 lt1 motors can be modified to your performance needs as the ls6 and ls3. Also lsx aftermarket engines are performing as drag car engines any ls1 series engines can produce twice there displacement in horsepower !!!!!
Well delivered run down on the ls1&3. Kept it reasonably simple without the lengthy ramble. Awesome

Hey man great video I really liked it!
Some constructive criticism, the intro and outro music made me want to jump face first into a wood chipper.
Keep up the good work mate!
😉😉😉😉😉
The issue was the piston rings, they lowered the spring tension to lower internal friction and it didn't work; high oil consumption.
I love my old LS1 ,, It’s done nearly 300,000 Klms And it still pulls like a bull in spring, Mind you I change the oil every 5-6 thousand ks Keeps it running smoothly 👍⁉️😂🤣
I like how short the video was, good info, facts to support your thoughts. 👍
I’ll have one of each, just to be safe
Good job for a young man I've been dealing with engine building for 30 years good job
Cylinder deactivation is not a cool thing. I would avoid it at costs.
LS3 all the way. Good power output / versatile / cheaply serviceable / find parts anywhere.....perfect tuner engine for turbo and supercharging....

LS3 hands down. There is nothing better about an LS1.
LS3 has better:
Block strength (rotocast from 2009 and up)
Block breathing
More displacement 376 vs. 346
Rectangle LS7 STYLE heads with better valve angle and larger valve size.
Stronger castings
Better intake manifold
Better exhaust manifolds
DOD for better efficiency
That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
DOD is ass
Amen
if you can find one and also depending where you are, some country's used them like australia, but then again it comes down to Oe parts very expensive compared to aftermarket parts for the LS1, even the L98, L77 6lt engine has better power and better support aftermarket wise, cheers :) Spend a couple grand on a L98 or L77 and you have at least 400 HP at the rear wheel's, but spend the same on the LS3 6.2 Lt, if you have a stock car and you just get to that much power, if you get my drift ? Also depends where you take your car to have these aftermarket upgrades, like headers, OTR, tune etc. :)

The LS3 doesn’t have DOD.

Just a FYI, Gen4 also has much stronger connecting rods. You actually can swap Gen4 rotating assembly into a Gen3 which is popular for budget boost builds because of the stronger rods from the factory

Yeah I have an 05 GTO and a buddy has an 04. Both pretty much stock, mines only slightly faster. I think the ls2 sounds better though.

That wasn’t the question though.
Yea it’s better at dropping a valve!
@Echo Drive yea
Echo Drive yea
@PRN 123D
No it's far from a common LS7 problem.

@@ivanlaney2336
What the he....
Yea u right about LS3

Why?

LS3 > LS1/LS6
The only LS1 variation that holds a candle to the LS3 is the 5.3 & 4.8 truck motors.
They are heavier but they can take the abuse of forced induction, and they are CHEAP.
LS1/LS6 NA = 450-500 rwhp max
LS1/LS6 FI = 550-600 rwhp max I haven't seen any LS1 engines make over 600 rwhp and not break.
5.3 / 4.8 FI = 700-750 rwhp max Pushing 750+ is when they fail
LS3 NA = 500-550 rwhp max
LS3 FI = 630-680 rwhp max Pushing further is when they fail
The only reason you end up with a LS1/LS6 is because the vehicle you have came with it.
If money was no object, you buy a LS3 or LSX block.
If money is tight, you do what you can with your LS1/LS6 till it blows up. Then you go get yourself a 5.3 for $500, spend $1,500 making it "bullet proof", then spend $5,000+ on forced induction.
