  • In this I'm part of a group that's participating in the Rubithon TLCA event on the Rubicon Trail! We had anticipated as many as 11 vehicles in our group but after a few no shows and some breakdowns at the start, we ended up with 6 vehicles, and not a Jeep in sight. I'm driving a Suzuki Samurai loaned to me by Jeff Greenwood and what else can you say other than driving a Samurai is always fun!

    Great Video. Last time I was there was 83 with a buddy's dad and couple friends. An early 70 Bronco. FJ 40 and CJ 5. I think they were all on 31 Wranglers. Big tires back then.

    Oh, yes! 19:50 got me all tied up. I couldn't even get on the same line everyone took. You drove out straight...and I stopped driving for the day. I don't remember that tight turn into "taillight trench", different line?

    • @jeffgreenwood5159
      @jeffgreenwood5159 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1 Tail light was Driver error . Put in reverse and not drive . Gave it gas and backed right up into the rock . The other was from the Bumper flexing up and it took out the tail light . The Tacoma had the turning radius of a oil tanker

    I used to own a Samurai. My first 4x4 actually. The small size definitely had its advantages and disadvantages. Wheeling with just me wasn't bad but if I had a passenger (especially if they were as big or bigger as me) I wanted to mount their seat on the outside 😃 definitely claustrophobic with two in the cab.

  • @nicholascooper1193
    @nicholascooper1193 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think wheeling a properly geared rig with manual transmission is smoother in rock gardens like the Rubicon. SO many times you see people get off line just because they roll-stop-roll-stop with the auto trans. Need to learn to 2 foot and ride the brakes so they can stay on the converter and keep some momentum... (although now that I think about it, those would be the same people hitting the clutch at the top/bottom of every little rock...)

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most vehicles that are still recognizable as factory vehicles rarely have low enough gearing for smooth rock crawling. I'll have extremely low gearing with an automatic in my FJ. I think the result will be smooth crawling without the downside of stalling. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

    • @nicholascooper1193
      @nicholascooper1193 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@offroadhub.official
      I agree, since Toyotas and Samurais have slowly aged out of the popularity they had 15 years ago, you don't see as many manual trans rigs with deep gearing. Heck at one time I had a very stock looking IFS 1st Gen 4Runner on 31" all terrains with dual cases + 4.7s in the rear case. That tripped people up.

    I prefer American vehicles, but that’s because I’m biased as an American citizen. Coming from Russia; it’s still hard for me to sense why Americans will buy Toyota or Nissan … F Japan & giving them market share. We should support our brands - our companies; globalism is one thing, but ultimately must have loyalty to strength our brands for future. The quality is very even, so no excuse can exist.

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting perspective. There aren't many "American" made off road vehicles to buy new. Jeeps are Italian, I guess a new Ford Bronco would qualify. Vehicles are extremely global when it comes to what they are made of. Most Toyota SUV's and trucks are built in the US from global components. You really can't buy "an American made vehicle" anymore. Like I said, Chrysler is Fiat, GM sells more vehicles in China than in the US, Ford is probably the closest, but they still use global parts. Nationalist car buying us a fruitless effort.
