Toyota Engine Destruction // Don't Do This!!

  • What does it take to destroy a Toyota 1GR-FE V6 engine? Not much it seems. A simple obstacle in Sand Hollow was enough to put this engine at an angle that was sufficient to hydro-lock it.

    Seen Tacoma on 15 at WindRock starts knocking while leaning over. No way for coolant to get into a cylinder. Only after it blew up and damaged a coolant passage could coolant enter the cylinder. So it had to hydro lock from oil. Best of luck with the swap.

  • @forreststrong797
    @forreststrong797 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Man that sucks! I think what happened is you were overwhelming the intake with oil and shutting off the engine gave it enough time to fill a cylinder. The coolant could be from the immense pressure off trying to compress the oil and breaking the rod it is not uncommon. It could also possibly be gas but i think the immense pressure lifted the head or cracked into a coolant galley.
    What i would suggest in the future is rerouting/redesigning your pcv system. You can run the hoses in a ceratain way around the engine or what im running on a different engine is a moroso oil/air separator its similar to a catch can but its not vented so it can hold vacuum and its not gonna suck up dust or water offroad its just a separator. I run 2 they have a small skinny one and a fatter one the moroso ones are a nice quality ive tried cheaper ones.
    But this is common for the breathers to put oil into the intake and it will smoke and unfortunately i think shutting it off and sitting is what let enough oil in otherwise it may have kept burning instead of building up.
    Youll have to do some research on your specific pcv breather system and see how you want to rectify this so it doesn't happen again. Like i mentioned theres ways of routing the hose around the engine so at no point can oil actually get into the intake but that can be tricky sometimes and ugly to route. Then theres the oil/air separator which will help and buy some time. I do mine with a separator and a little hose routing i run 2 separators 1 for each breather. Theres also a catch can vented to atmosphere but over the years ive come to not like those on a offroad rig because it can be a way for water to get in if it splashes up in the engine bay in extreme conditions also dust is another thing with those. But again it really depends on application. You will have to explore your breather system and see what you can do to route it in a way that is better suited to high angles and add an oil separator or two if you think that would help.
    I dont think at any point your pickup ran dry that would be a different kind of failure and this is a classic failure of oil filling the intake from the breathers. It seems like your pickup system is probably pretty good at steep angles. sometimes guys will add baffles with trap doors and things in the pan ive also seen people run oil accumulators which will buy you precious time after the pickup runs dry but again i think you always had oil pressure.
    Here is a good video linked below that talks about hose routing and vents in a offroad application he starts talking about the engine around 7.30ish this might help you.

  • @janpur1417
    @janpur1417 ปีที่แล้ว

    I suspect the engine oil creeped into the intake via PCV valve: At idle PCV is open, then leaning to left makes the left bank to act as a Subaru boxer engine. Does the PCV is on left valve cover? may be it's good to fix a shut off valve to PCV while going over 30 degrees.

  • @ronaldrussell5481
    @ronaldrussell5481 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Impressive that the bearing is still good, that says the angularity limit of the lubrication system is pretty high. I wonder if having that piston bottom submerged in oil when at bottom of stroke when leaned over as you were and a high cylinder vacuum because of low engine speed/part throttle resulted in sucking enough oil past rings from bottom up to accelerate your problem? Maybe once you get it all apart we'll see more. Looking forward to your future video(s).

    you filled a cylinder or two u with oil, never should have shut it off, the smoke was just excess oil from the lean angle, but shutting it off allowed it to fill up. also after shutting it off you should have winched out, pull plugs, crank, install plugs go home... but never shut it off cuz while its running it cannot fill the cylinders up, if it runs and starts kicking while lent over, then the cylinder has prolly killed off a plug but the oil should still kick out the exhaust valves and be OK .. keep going.. stay at those lean angles MINIMAL time, in and out one motion, you hang out way to long analyzing what not .. IN AND OUT, DO NOT SHUT IT OFF .. all that's happening is the oil is creeping in the oil rings, its OK and as long as its running it wont fill up the cylinder, shut it off and let it fill then start? you see what happens.. sucks

    I'd suspect the CCV/PCV system providing oil back into the intake and oil-hydrolocking the engine, specifically, that cylinder. My son's JK, early '12, had similar issues of oil hydrolocking that I have on video, oil running, not dripping, running out of his resonator with the front at 40-50* up. It smoked light, then heavy and bogged, so he shut down, and that's when the oil poured out. Towed it home, took top plenum off, plugs out and used old socks to get into the cavities to absorb oil out on top of the valves. Sprayed it all down with SeaFoam and did the sock thing again. Turned over the engine to blow out the cylinders and used Seafoam in there as well. The top plenum was turned on its end and had a tshirt underneath. It was soaked from the oil still in the runners!
    4 drives later, thru rod #5 through the block. Refurbished long block replaced it. Turns out, it appears the 1st owner never changed the oil as the camshafts themselves showed excessive wear issues, but everything else on top was coated with a thick wax-oil residue. Found that the head casting on passenger side didn't have a return cavity passage for the oil (research forums spoke about this in late '11 for the early '12s 3.6ls). The CCV system doesn't have a 'valve' but more of a 'maze' to get the oil-vapored air back into the engine to burn. Thus the inventions of the oil-catch cans. We've installed one with 8' of tubing to help collect as much oil as possible before getting put back into the engine.
    I would have preferred to remove the CCV system from the internal combustion all together. There are oil-catch cans that are breathable, so have one on each side of the CCV system. Meaning clean air is entered into the driver's valve cover coming from the intake tube. The passenger valve cover is the exit and gets plumbed into the intake behind the throttle body. There is no ECU sensor to determine if that is working correctly or not, other than the O2s. With engine blow-by, the oil-vapor air is pressurized back into the intake tube as the pressure is greater than the engine's vacuum.
    Suggest to look into oil catch cans for your FJ.

    When the engine hyrdo-locked, it very well could have blown the head gasket, which could be why you are seeing coolant in the cylinder.

      I think a pcv catch can might fix the issue. Shouldn't be really expensive.

    Question: was it the drivers side bank with the broken piston or passenger side bank? I can possibly understand if it was the passenger side ; maybe at that angle for the duration of it running there wasn’t enough oil lubrication between the piston rings and cylinder wall causing it to heat up and seize and most likely causing a blown head gasket or cracked head near a coolant jacket……

    • @offroadhub.official
      @offroadhub.official  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was the driver's side. The piston is still perfectly free and smooth in the cylinder.

    Oh no dude! What a bummer to have that engine issue. Though it does reinforce my feeling that, where you rock crawling lunatics go, us overlanding angels fear to tread. lol Seriously though, vids like this are really helpful for us less experienced people. For instance, I've recently had a weird lean fuel issue pop up with my FJ that I've been troubleshooting. Videos like this help keep things in perspective for me, to remind me that there are more serious issues I could be dealing with, and that it's a good thing to be learning more about the ins and outs of these vehicles.

    Do you think the oil came in the intake through the crank case ventilation? Would a catch can have prevented this?

      Just armchair quarterbacking here, but from the other Jeep content I’ve seen on that trail, it is the same lines they take. The spotting seemed good to me 👍🏼
