  • One of the Presidential Candidates, Mr Tharman, said the other day that Singaporean work too long hours - and EVERYONE was talking about it!
Is he right? What can we do to work shorter days?

Hello Jonty, that's such an accurate description of a BAD habit we have !! Having taught crafting and art for many years, it was common to see rushed work, with very little attention to understanding how the mediums work, the process of building a piece of art and the importance of making time to practice the foundation basics. Most just wanted to get the lesson over with, then move on to the next thing .... with the same excuse " very busy !!!". This probably stems from a whole childhood spent in regimented hours of school, tuition, non-stop schedules of swimming, music or dance lessons and constantly being told to NOT waste time.
Like you, my wish is for Singaporeans to slow down, to breathe and let in small pockets of "just be" during the day. It is getting better as more and more want balance and choices to how they live, they are redefining success and happiness in ways other than monetary or material.
    Enjoy your weekend !
    Aida.

Hi Aida! Thanks for your comment! Yes, I think it is engrained into our thinking and it takes intentionality to change our mindsets. I guess the question I need to ask and settle for myself is whether Singapore NEEDS to continue this pace in order to stay at the top of the game?

Hi Jonty, Singaporeans can be very busy because we are plugged globally. The worst is when u need to contact your business counterparts in US, UK, EU & Australia & NZ with the time difference. So when it’s stressful, we need to learnt to destress with small small things around us both from nature settings in parks or even built environment for a few seconds or 1 to 2 mins. I recalled being intrigued by how light skips over a ripples in the canal that I was walking next to. Every time I walk pass after lunch I will look forward for this phenomenal, it’s relaxes me. Another phenomenal is light cast on the escalator downward steps. The way it flows and reflects is so amazing. A walk in the park will open up the world of light and shadows. Light on tree leaves grass reflects different hues of green. How the squirrel eat it’s fruit hanging upside down from a branch and balancing itself, listening to how leaves russkes different sound etc. In our materialistic world, we need to open our eyes and ears to nature and receive the God given therapy it provides to our mind even for spilt is seconds is so relaxing and enjoy.

Absolutely agreed with regards to the international work happening across our nation - but this is not the majority of people, yet it is the majority when it comes to the culture. I love your thoughts and moments of relaxation and wonder! Thank you so much for sharing!

Great points! Life can run away before you know. I believe in doing the job to the best of your ability, putting in 100%, but it cannot be everything ... the time spent to appreciate that Golden Orb, the time letting the kids search for the seeds? You can never get that back ... its precious and good for the soul 👍 Thanks ...

Most Singaporeans will be spending their family bonding time at the causeway on election day. 😂
