  • CNA speaks to presidential candidate, former Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who talks about his days as a student activist that set him on a path of "practical idealism". He explains how he would work with Singapore’s fourth-generation leadership team if he is elected. Mr Tharman also talks about his relationship with his wife, Jane Yumiko Ittogi, and why they went around eating “orh nee” (a yam paste dessert) before having children. Read more: cna.asia/3ONM6PV

Would love for there to be more competition in the next presidential election, there'd be those wanting to vote for a candidate that is non-PAP affiliated but after going through the other 2 candidates. It seems that the next president is a very clear choice in terms of eloquence and abilities even among those with anti-government sentiments.

To help deal with the political certainties and, possibly, crisis in the next six years -- brought about by he transition to a new and weaker PM, we should elect Tharman as President. With his soft power, he can help steer Singapore through turbulent waters.
We as citizens should also urge the outstanding Ministers to stay on for another term as another safeguard. Heng Swee Keat, Teo Chee Hean, Ng Eng Hen and Lee Hsien Loong should stay on as DPM, Senior Minister or Minister Mentor until the new PM proves himself up to the job, or is replaced with a stronger candidate in case he loses majority support in Parliament.

  • @philippang07
    @philippang07 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

My choice after seeing and considering the other 2 worthy candidates.
I find it anaemic and strange that some vocal, vociferous quarters are against ANYONE with PAP affiliations to stand as our Head of State
fearing that the President is merely a "figurehead puppet" for the PAP to do with as they wish. I understand their sentiments about having a
non-politically aligned President who will function independently, as he should, for the good of our country. I don't doubt my fellow Singaporeans'
genuine intentions to have a "neutral" President in place, to veto pro-PAP policies that threaten our reserves to "cover their political "misdemeanours"
where needed. I am with them, the man on the street with our families in tow and we are just worried about political failures leading
to a collapse of our country and system in the long run if we do not have our checks and balances in place.
For me, I want someone respectable and respected not just locally but internationally on the world stage, non-comical, not too old,
who is humble, knowledgeable, deeply experienced, calm, sensible, but most importantly, a people's President sensitive to the man on the ground,
and who just commands a quiet respect and reverence from most of us for who he is in person - because we connect and can put our trust in him.
It's NEVER been solely about which political party or political brand namesake; it's about who is the very best woman / man forward
for the undertaking of our nation's highest office and all its associated responsibilities, who will work to continue to unify our people in
multiculturalism, oversee our reserves with his committee of advisors, who has the conviction for doing what is right for our country and people,
even if it doesn't sit well with government should these situations arise, and they will. Our President of choice will stand by his own mind
regardless and is able to work closely with the government neutrally and constructively and not be too "standoffish" in demeanour. Just because
SM Tharman was formerly with the PAP doesn't mean he is automatically a yes-man partisan to whatever the PAP wants.
Being in political sync does not work against Singapore, it works for Singapore.
I am not a staunch PAP supporter for the sake of it, as thinking electorate, but I believe in their track record thus far.
Fear is a main driver of anti-PAP sentiment. How do we manage them? Listen, apply and help within reason.
No political party or President can be all things to all people. If we get 75 to 80% support, we're good.
What is the track record so far for the PAP government, while in power for nearly 6 decades post 1965?
    80% +ve. 20 -ve.
Are they resting on their laurels or still spearheading our country through an ever-changing world today?
Have they squandered our reserves or diversified to propel our reserves to even great heights to help the
people? Are they for themselves or us? Why would they taint their track record knowing full well the repercussions
    in the upcoming GEs?
It's about championing the cause for the good of our country, not just a job in political office. That's a calling.
We lost George Yeo and team then for what reasons exactly? (I'm headed somewhere with this.)
The point being : emotive, anti-PAP sentiments voiced by some quarters have actually hurt having the very best people for
our country. It's clouded their judgement. They aren't neutral, they are biased for the sake of things, for being anti-PAP no
matter what. These same biased sentiments will cloud their judgement for the elected President and against Tharman for
the role just because he was ex-PAP? To have pointed out that he is perhaps over-qualified as our next President is contrarily
an excellent compliment and exactly the very reason why he gets the vote!
Keep biases at bay with neutrality and common sense.
All three candidates are their own men. They have stepped forward to serve and we are grateful for the choice.
Who makes the best President for us locally and internationally?
Who best represents us as Singaporeans when greeting and meeting overseas Heads of State and dignitaries as our President?
Which candidate has the best stature? Gravitas of thought? With a track record of being an empathetic individual who stands his
ground and doesn't buckle or bow to political pressure in disagreements? For me, at age 53, a father of three, my President needs
to be able to work alongside DPM Lawrence Wong and team when the latter takes over reins from PM Lee. We need well-oiled, clean,
uncorrupt governance in every aspect over our country, her people and its reserves. We do not need political infighting
for the sake of things, from independents. Stability is key. But so are checks and balances to keep things stable. Our President
is a neutral gate-keeper for us.
And yes, I am happy we do have some good reputable men step up to the fore to select who is the best man at present
    for the Presidency.
Singapore is for all Singaporeans who make our country home. We will die for our country if push came to shove in any conflict against us
as a united people. There is no room for foreign or local elitism and greed to take root and mushroom out of control at the expense of our people.
This is fair warning to any political party and politician out there. We do not take to foreign intervention into our affairs or politics which are
reserved for Singaporeans born and bred here, and who have the necessary attributes and passion to serve and lead our country forward
in political office. We don't need 100% perfection in any political party or President. Just someone earnest, accountable, and responsible
with a heart for the people. They will own up to mistakes but they don't make grievous ones to begin with. Those who do, have to step down.
Drunks, womanisers and the like have no place in political office. You're squeaky clean or we will vote you out. The rarity with the PAP government
is they do take concrete steps to be accountable for the highest levels of governance. There is no such thing as 100% transparency with any
government today. We'd be living with our heads in the sand if we did. We need to give and take as long as they fit the bill 80% of the time and
own up to the balance 20% where they failed.
Madam Halimah Yacob made me proud to be Singaporean. And yes she was from the PAP and all it stood for and still stands till today.
I liked having a minority lady President in office and she stood tall always in her tudung - as she was a Muslim rooted in her culture
and beliefs, but that's besides the point that she had all the requisites as a President despite her diminutive size. She is chilli padi for the
food that is Singapore! A necessary complement and flavour completion to make Singapore banyak sedap.
Terima kasih Madam President Halimah - we wish you and family the very best for all you have done and continue to do.
May the best President represent us moving forward, regardless of political associations. We follow track records but also the
feel he or she emanates, by what the person really stands for.
Peace, stability for us all and families, and progress for our future together as a united people.

NKS has more of that urgency. However, Singapore will come to that stage, because PM LHL is a very responsible, capable, experienced, and patriotic Singaporean. With his experience, instead of contributing more to SG by remaining as a minister, he choose or being chose to be a president who will have no more say in govt policies and operations. This does not makes sense. Obviously someone is fearful they will lose control of the president because this time there is no more race card to play and is open for contest for all races. Halimah will stand no chance if she goes for a real fight and has no choice but to step down. Thus Tharman needs to step in to prevent outsider from becoming the president. This is not healthy for a truly democratic Singapore. Please open your eyes when voting.

Somehow he feels the need to pander to the Chinese identity at every opportunity. Chooses the pineapple which is a hokkien pun, shows off his Chinese calligraphy and here talking about teochew orh-nee. And he sings his favourite song from P Ramlee to also please the Malays. Very much the typical politician.

Yes, and we rarely see engagement in spheres when it comes to his own Indian identity whether more substantively or in more informal ways. For instance, he could have chosen many symbols that he sees value in that emanate from his Indian dharmic tradition which have elements and symbolism of inclusiveness. But I guess this is how he has to play it. Having a Chinese wife will help him quite a bit in terms of votes, though notwithstanding the fact that he is probably the most competent legislator we have in Singapore.

    • @ZhenYae
      @ZhenYae 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Magnatec_tank He is one diplomat who does not indulge in CECAN politics to appeal for more votes. Good on him.
If he wants to identify as being Chinese, the law minister has no choice but to change the laws again.

@@truthenjoyer4423 It's political theatre but there's a difference. How many people are there in NKS's kampung? He cannot be just trying to appeal to his kampung folk. He is saying he is down-to-earth despite his wealth. Tharman is playing racial identity politics and he is the only one really doing it. He likely believes his race is a significant handicap so he tries to compensate for it. As you say, NKS doesn't try to pretend to speak Chinese.

If only Temasek and GIC can perform better than may be Singaporean can see slower GST hike in the future. Ng founded Avanda Investment Management with two former GIC colleagues, Quah Wee Ghee and Sung Cheng Chih. Avanda Investment Management received support from leading institutional investors whose contributions helped launch the firm with around US$4 billion in assets. By 2022, its assets had more than doubled to US$10 billion, making it one of Singapore's fastest-growing investment firms. I am hoping NKS can sharpen the GIC and Temasek performance by deploying his experience in president office.
