- With news that universities in Singapore are amongst the top in the world, we took to the streets to find out what Singaporeans think about the reputation of these institutions and whether a degree from them is worth anymore than one from a private institution/overseas.
Word On The Street is the latest series on TSLTV where our host, Fauzi, goes around asking Singaporeans about anything and everything that's happening in Singapore!

So Erm just wanna share some thoughts from my family's brought up:) I still remembering explaining to my father that a university certificate is very important when I was P6(he asked me if I planned to go university-I think he just wanted me to understand the main purpose of university) my father then told me "Why people hire university graduates is not fully because of the university they came from and whatever certificate they have, but because of the way university graduates think." After experiencing years of education our minds and thinking become boarder and more aware. We look at things differently and analyse situations differently because of the years of education. Although our knowledge may be important but the most important thing is the way we behave, the way we act and how we think and if it's beneficial to the company. :)

Guys the girl is still young, and may just be unaware of what unis there are in SG. I'm a local uni student myself and in secondary school I probably don't know what the local unis are.

From my own experience, I think that girl is still quite young. Maybe early secondary, so may not be very knowledgeable in Uni GK. I believe when she's in poly and JC then will start to really know more abt it.

Wow. I've never heard of anyone that would think NUS is a hospital. In the end, general consensus is that experience and hard work is more important than the traditionalist paper chase, especially from our parents' expectations.

Although judgment is a natural instinct, try to catch yourself before you speak, or send the nasty comment and do any potential harm. You can't get your words back. See if you can understand where the person may be coming from. Try to rephrase your critical internal thought into positive one, or at least a neutral one. Look at your own behaviour. Sometime, we maybe judging someone for something that we do ourselves, or have done. For example, the next time you find yourself yelling at someone while you're driving, ask yourself, "Have I ever driven poorly?" Of course, we all have. Dalai Lama says:" People take different roads seeking fulfilment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost." Give the person the benefit of the doubt. Someone once told me, no one wakes up in the morning and says,"I think I'm going to be a jerk today." Most of us do the best we can with the resources we have at the moment.

A degree cert is no longer a golden ticket to higher salary in Singapore. However it is still "important" to get you a job. Some companies care about branding as some hire degree holders because of company reputation.

Sometimes getting a local university degree isn't enough to go far in life. I mean, the percentage of people having a local degree is so high! I feel that at this point of time, you have to be a scholar to excel. It's already hard enough for local uni grads to find a job lol.

NUS NTU SMU SUTD SIT
In my experience, overseas universities (especially western ones) are highly prized in Singapore, much more so than even a very good degree from any local one. Singaporean degrees are valued abroad more.
It depends. If you have an Oxford, Harvard etc, then any company will roll out the red carpet for you no matter which country you are in. However, don't tell me that a degree from London Metropolitan, one of the worst universities in UK is somehow more valued than an NUS degree.
No, you're right, but even a well known less well rated university (like for example Birmingham) are sometimes seen as a better option. Part of it may be "white guy worship" and love of everything western, part of it may be just the wish to get away from home, and part of it may be the travelling/ living abroad experience.

The only Overseas Unis that are "highly prized" is those Ivy League Unis (MIT Stanford Harvard Cambridge etc)
