    The ironic thing is, her dropping her armor shows disrespect towards her father, the person she cares enough about to go to war for. That armor was her fathers, yet she just leaves it in the mud like it means nothing to her. Just another way the modern one somehow manages to screw up everything, even the virtues they supposedly show in the movie (loyalty, etc.)

      I guess she loses everything her father had, huh? She tosses the armor away on the battlefield AND she drops the sword into a vat of molten metal.

      You know, it's hard for me: Normally, i would seperate the actual Movie 'Mulan' from the Real Life. Look at them seperately.
      But this... THIS is just an extreme case and i dont know how to do it here.
      All this is so insane.
      The Movie is full of Cringe, Fake-Feminism and Plot Holes - yet, the Real Life has way crazier problems and I'm starting to think China is so off-track from the rest of humanity that some Nation should - no kidding - invade China and take over, so the Supression ends... Or something like this!
      I know this normally isnt right, but... i believe there is a 'Point' where such a thing is justified. Of course this point is by no means easy to reach, but... it's possible to reach, you know?
      Oh, i don't know.

    Mulan (1998) also has one of the most unforgiving and sudden mood shifts of any movie i’ve ever seen. In the scene where the army is singing and having a good time as they march to meet up with the rest of their forces we an abrupt stop, and are shown a village that was burned down. We go from joyful and happy soldiers singing to just the complete opposite as they walk through the ruins of the village. The score goes from upbeat to depressing in a matter of seconds.
    They completely massacred this scene in the remake.

    • @mayvalley
      @mayvalley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +260

      That scene is one of the most powerful scenes in the whole movie, in my opinion. Especially since they’re singing the goofy song, then it immediately gets cut off as they find the little girl’s burned up doll. It did such a good job showing the horrors of war just by showing that one doll.

    • @sebastianrubin7476
      @sebastianrubin7476 2 ปีที่แล้ว +177

      And that mood whiplash allows them to drive home the horror of war without being too explicit for a children's movie, while for older audiences the inferred horror becomes even more terrible.
      It's an amazing scene in a great movie.

      @@mayvalley Worst thing is we the audience already saw that doll before! I forgot his name, but the main antagonist of the original Mulan got that doll after his pet bird brought it to him. After his men inspected that doll he told them "The little girl misses his doll. We should return it to her.". I saw both scenes on TH-cam a few weeks ago in the right order and my expression went from ._. to 0-0 back to ._. after my brain told me 'Just act natural' because I got called down for something

    The point of Mulan is that she ISN’T naturally strong. She ISN’T naturally gifted in martial arts and fighting. She ISN’T special. But, she’s incredibly smart, incredibly brave, she worked hard to become a skilled warrior, and she does what’s right, even when she’s scared or thinks she’s not able to do it. I dunno how they managed to fuck that up.

      Vegetarian Soylent Green right! She wasn’t born special, what made her special were the decisions she made and the actions she took. The point is, ANY woman could be Mulan if they have the courage in their hearts. You don’t have to be “special”. In the 2020 movie, Mulan is an exception. She’s NOT just like any other woman. So basically, the movie says that a woman has to be born with special powers in order to be on par with her male counterparts, which is bullshit and goes against the original message!

    I really hate that disney's response to people wanting strong female characters is literally make all their female characters physically stronger. And also BTW a woman character's personality shouldn't just be woman, it should be a well written character with personality who happens to be a woman. Representation doesn't mean you can't show their flaws and stuff.

    • @thedepressedavacado8267
      @thedepressedavacado8267 4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      I think that it needs to be a mix of both. Female characters shouldn’t have to be made more stereotypically masculine to be strong characters, but women can also be physically strong. But when it comes to these strong women in movies they always seem to choose one or the other. How about a head strong, with a more petite woman or a compassionate but more physically built woman?

    Disney seems like they haven’t realized that we don’t actually want “strong female characters.” We want strong characters that just happen to be female. “Strong female characters” aren’t compelling because that’s literally their entire character. Strong characters that just happen to be female have to have other things going for them to be interesting, relatable, or admirable.

    I don’t think turning Mulan into a Wuxia story is inherently a bad idea, in fact it sorta works, but the people who wrote this movie fundamentally don’t understand Wuxia as a genre. One of the core principles of the Wuxia Genre is that birth and natural talent is secondary to hard work and training, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman, the Emperor or a peasant, if you put in the effort you can achieve great things, Mulan 2020 is the antithesis of the Genre it’s trying to emulate.

      @gregorypan 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's such a simple fix, too. Just make it so every character has chi powers, and most of the army and antagonists are stronger than Mulan. If you want it to not be about gender, make it so many members of the army are female but have extremely strong qi, and Mulan simply doesn't. (If you wanted to maintain the whole Mulan crossdress plot just make the women their own division that Mulan can't join because they're ridiculously powerful, which is why they were allowed in the army despite being women)
      Then all you have to do is revolve the plot around Mulan using wit and hard work to outdo/keep up with those around her and boom. She's back to being similar to the better Mulan without losing the wuxia elements.

      We’re not mad that it isn’t identical to the original cartoon version. We’re just saying it’s a disgrace to the message it was supposed to send. Now little girls in this generation are possibly gonna watch this 2020 Mulan film as the original Mulan film and it’s gonna tell them that they’ll always be one step behind men unless they have a naturally born superpower/gift. Mulan is literally about portraying women empowerment. If you don’t care about that and just care about the making of the film in itself, then ur missing the whole point of the film. If this 2020 Mulan film WASN’T identical to the original but still managed to send a message about women empowerment, we, the audience, wouldn’t be complaining. But it didn’t, so it’s why we’re criticizing. I mean, I guess it’s a good film if you only wanna see action and fighting.

      It's also sad how the current Mulan actress went out of her way to say she stands with the Hong Kong Police because theirs nothing more empowering to women or anyone else than supporting a Communist state in the midst of repressing it's people. The Same Communist Government that during it's One China Policy forced tens of thousands of women to have abortions and the vast majority of aborted or post live birth murders were girls who could have grown up to be remarkable women but were instead snuffed out in favor of sons because the Communist State demanded it.

      Sometimes to me it's not clear if Chinese actors "support" the government because they really like it or because they don't want to, you know, disappear or whatever else China does to people who oppose them (and being a public figure makes it even harder to go against it because if they survey regular folk, they definitely keep all the tabs on their celebs and what they are saying).
      Not defending the main actress, because hey what she said was shifty, but sometimes I wonder how much of those words are genuine and how much is just being afraid of something happening to you or your family.

    In the 1998 mulan, shan yu was awesome. His character was freaking cool looking, he was a menace and a huge threat, his voice worked great with the character. Just the "boo" when he's hanging from the roof, just a great villan. The live action butchered it because he doesn't even feel like a threat, it feels like he isn't even dangeous without the witch. In the live action he's seemingly useless on hiss own, considered he was beaten by mulan instantly.

    To make it worse, the movie is filled with orientalism. The whole "chi" thing is incredibly misrepresented and they could have fixed it just by calling it "cultivation" instead. There are no witches in Chinese mythology, but spirits that can transform from birds to humans and shape-shift are a thing and considered evil. The clothing the characters are wearing are strange, low quality mutations of Chinese clothes, visualising this movies orientalism right in front of our eyes. It's so painfully obvious they didn't have anyone that knew anything about anything Chinese to help them make this movie, yet they expected the Chinese audiences to like it?

    Even though the hair cutting scene in the original isn't historically accurate, it still works perfectly as cinematic shorthand. An example Lindsay Ellis once used was in Hercules. When Hercules enters Zeus's temple, he kneels and says a prayer. The historically accurate thing to do would be to sacrifice a goat, but that wouldn't make sense to a modern audience. Shorthand quickly gives information to the audience by using modern cultural knowledge. Mulan's scene succeeds in this shorthand while also being a powerful, cinematic scene that shows Mulan's transformation as well as being a crossing of the threshold that she can't turn back from.

    The hair cutting scene in the animated movie represents her embracing change, representing a new beginning, a new her. She embraced her new self she was going to have to be to join the army, before she had to, knowing she would have to develop as a person and face challenges she hadn't had before, that's why she cut her hair. Not because it would help disguise her/make her more masculine, because, like Elvis Alien said, men had long hair in early China, so she could've kept her hair, but didn't, to embrace change and her new future self, and let go of who she was before.

      No it's not. The word is badly translated - it should be "filial piety", which is one of the most important virtues in Chinese culture for both men and women. The reason Mulan's story is so culturally significant is because she is the epitome of filial piety, by risking her life to take her father's place in the army. Sadly many Chinese parents nowadays take "filial piety" to mean "do your homework and become a doctor/lawyer or I will disown you" lol.

    She used her brain to outsmart her opponents, and yes while she did shown to get better in the training montage but she was never fuckin doing flips and kicking spears back into peoples faces.
    I could care less about what the actor supports, i am just...confused why they would make all these huge changes to an already beloved animated movie.

      It's obvious why. It's to pander to china. Which they thankfully failed at.

      It's insulting the Source Material a dozen times over, directly, indirectly, and directly-indirectly.
      Making Mulan JUST A CHOSEN ONE is an Insult.
      Plot Holes, Fake-Feminism and Plot Holes - is what i say about this Movie!!!
      Damn, it's so bad and yet people dont see that.

    I saw Mulan Rise of a Warrior a while back, and it's "female" protagonist isn't some Ninja of Legend that just kicks the shit out of everybody, she is just a woman. However she is a woman that takes her licks and perseveres in a man's world. To me that makes that Mulan a much better role-model for women.

      it's not that she's a woman that happens to be strong she's a strong person that happens to be a woman

    holy shit a Trebuchet... Han dynasty was the second imperial dynasty of China (202 BC - 220 AD)... The first recorded use of a trebuchet is in Europe in the 12th century. Who let Biff use the time machine again?
