Fantastic Beasts 1 was a fun spinoff at the very least and should've been left at that. Making a franchise that completely ignores the message of the first as it goes along was an absolutely pathetic idea.
The more she goes on the more I get the impression that Rowling has no idea what made HP work, what made it popular, and has no intention of finding out. She just seems to think anything with her name on it will print money. I've seen people saying that she's a one-hit-wonder whose one hit was released in seven parts: she's not actually good at writing, she just got lucky that one time.
@@tjenadonn6158 everything with her name on it DOES print money. That's the point lol. It doesn't matter if it's good writing, or why it works, it does. This trilogy grossed over 2 billion at the box office lmao
Remember when the first film was a charming, contained story about a quirky dude that went 'round documenting various magical beasts in the Wizarding world? Yeah- kinda turned into forgettable action-schlock.
You seem to forget the political part of the film and the theme of abused children. These things are not funny. The first movie was pretty terrifying to me actually.
@@sydney33thomas - Yeah…. the first film is a political spy thriller and was even marketed as such. The beasts were a distraction and every review pointed it out.
Gotta love how Newt almost has nothing to do with the sequels yet they keep having to shove him into situations that involve him fighting evil wizards when that has nothing to do with his job
Yeah like he deserved so much more than that. He’s easily the best and most interesting character of the series so idk why they couldn’t just center everything around him.
Are you Serious Newt was the important Charakter in the three movies. He stopted Grindelwald withe the swooping Evil und the first movie. In the second movie it was the Niffler from him who stopped Grindelwald destroy Paris. And in the third movie he has the most important role of all charakter to protect the Quillin from Grindelwald. And dont forget it was Newt who nearly saved Creedence and whole New York in the first movie. He is the most important chraracter of the whole franchise You all so dumb man. Have you ever watched the movies?
I think the movie was all over the place. It could have been a very interesting story. The whole Credence story is bullshit. He was told to be this dude who was meant to defeat dumbledor, this got built up in the first 2 movies, then in the third Dumbledor kicks his ass in the first 5 minutes and okay move on. What a horrible plot. No offense on JK because she was kind of rushed to finish this.
i swear almost every time someone has an issue with these films it comes from ppl who have no idea what they are talking about 1 newt is famous in the "sequels" 2 he is already dead and his story isnt relevant to most the plot just like grindlewald 3 newts grandson was both at the battle of Hogwarts and in books is the eventual husband of Luna 5 he was heavily sought after by auroas to join because have his magical abilities/knowledge n refused multiple times do to ethics 6 he wasnt shoved into anything to fight evi wizards he was doing favors on behalf of dumbledore that put him those postions 7 just becauase his "job" doesnt pertain to fighting dark wizards means jack all Arthur Weasley was in the order of the pheonix his job was working in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office and Newt defiantly took knowledge from his job to help win multiple fights alot as if thats kind of the point of his character
I will never understand why they couldn’t just have left Fantastic Beasts series be about Newt running around saving various magical creatures and having fun adventures along the way and meeting people from all over the world - this could have been a magical Indiana Jones/Steve Irwin story and it could have been whimsical and fun. All the Grindelwald and Dumbledore drama literally could have been just another film series on its own. Combining the two plots is so entirely ridiculous given how polar opposite of tone they actually are.
It seems pretty obvious: Some suits at WB or JK (or possibly both) thought that moving away from new/original stuff and instead honing in on the "nostalgia content" directly related to the old series would increase sales. A part of me is really glad that they were proven wrong.
@@wind-flower one would think the logic would be that having two separate series of films would increase even more sales and get people more hyped. but I guess they didn’t subscribe to that logic.
They didn't because the first movie released in 2016 where the main concern of JK was ecological with the stereotype fascist evil antagonist Voldemort-like. The big problem being that in 2017 Donald Trump got elected, so JK was like "God dammit, i made a 7 books best seller that led to the creation of one of the most beloved and viewed movie saga about a Teenager fighting a fascist dark magician dictator and the alt right got to the head of the USA" So there was a shift in the story because the main concern of JK changed along the way being that alt right was still rising
I don't understand why she didn't just go for a more How to Train your Dragon type story. There's all these super dangerous monsters and everyone wants to kill them but when Newt was a child he came across one and it didn't attack him so he became curious. He tries to befriend them and finds out that everyone is unknowingly provoking them but if they change then they could live a mutually beneficial companionship. It'd be so much more heartwarming and fantastical than the gray drama we got.
You dont know how important Newts role in the franchise is. He is not there to caching magical creature like a pokemon he is so important because his knowledge and acting with the creature is the to save the world from Grindelwald. He is the only Reason why Grindelwald doesn't got so enormous power in the movies. Only because of Newt and his craeaturs and planing Grindelwald lost the fight in New York, Paris and Bhutan. It was not the minestry or Dumbeldore who stopped Grindelwald it was always Newt and his Magical craeatures. Thats why he is so fucking important and the maincharacter you Idiot
@@gasterthemaster6490 gray and grey are the same. The spelling changes based on region but neither of us is wrong in our spelling. I meant grey because of the literal tint of the movie. Twilight is associated with it's blue tint. I meant it like that. The literal color. I don't consider the movie a gay movie at all. It's gay by technicality. The whole Dumbledore thing is so unserious.
@@yukikanegawa7470I was very happy when I didn't know about characters' sexuality or skin color. I blame JK Rowling for that. Never should have said anything.
@@markcasadevall9509 (Young) Chinese movie-goers are actually pretty well aware of the stuff that gets edited out of their theater releases, though, because they all complain about not getting to see it online, so it's not even that much of a mystery. J.K Rowling is just fundamentally a coward about making things canon when she could just endlessly pay lip service to it on Twitter instead 🙄
I think JK _really_ overestimated how much we wanted to see the Grindelwald/Dumbledore story. They hung out for a summer, had a big fight, avoided each other for _years_ then fought once and Dumbledore won. And Grindelwald basically just surrendered depending on who you believe. That's not enough for a story
It's basically two adults who never got over their high school relationship. And she's making an entire series of movies about that. That's barely enough plot for a single 90 minute romcom. Adding wizards to that doesn't make it enough plot for a franchise Joey.
I just realized something: If the Qilin is crucial to Wizard elections, why is there a general apathy towards magical creatures as stated in the first movie? If you had a creature that could decide elections, I feel like some people would go "Hmm, I wonder if other creatures are as useful as this one."
You do know that the study of magical creatures may have gone back thousands of years and by then no other magical animal similar to the quillin had been found and unless something new was found, the old one was used
@@elektra121 no thats exactly how this works because the minsestry send lots of people in the world to find better creatures than or something liketthe Quillin and if there is no one there is no one 🤷♂️ Newt for example was also send out in the world to find and study mit creatures he is one of the people who search for better creatures. He for example write every new creature in his book or tell the minsestry about it because he work for the minsestry of magic. He is one of the people who study and search for New creatures but if there is no new creature than there is no new creature Because the study of magical cratures needs a lot of time for example obscurial they exist since 1500 and even after those years no one ever understood how they work and what they are and how big they power is. And when in this century years or how long the election exist no new creature is found they use the old one
People are doing the same thing in the real world tbh, so idk why its odd to you? I mean people kill threatened species all over the world, despite knowing their importance to the ego system. You are giving critic just for the sake of giving critic, and not really comming with anything constructive at all
The coolest thing about The Crimes of Grindelwald was in the theatre next to our screening they was showing Bohemian Rhapsody. So occasionally you'd just hear Queen songs blasting through the wall. They kill the dragon thing at the end as "WeEeEeEeEeEeE ARE THE CHAMPIONS" was blasting out. Rest of the movie was so bad I skipped the third one.
Because she was asked to write a story for this movie. Not the other way around. You cant write a good story about something if it doesnt come from inspiration
@@Rambrus0 That's not true. It's called craft. You can write very good story with very little inspiration- and you can write very bad ones with tons of inspiration.
It also would've netted WB twice as much money. That's the most baffling thing about it: from both a creative perspective AND a greedy corporate one, they would've been way better off giving Dumbledore his own movie(s) and leaving Newt to his magical Pokémon adventures
Honestly I would love a tv show where newt just went around saving and documenting magical creatures around the world. You would get to see how different wizard cultures around the world worked, see cool and unique creatures, and newt would be able to be in a type of story that fits him better than whatever film series they tried here
Would've been better if Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them went from one solo movie and into a series. The newer generations of kids would've loved a tv series like it. Then go for another HP spinoff movie but solely about the history of Dumbledore and Grindelwald and just put Newt as just the support character in it since he's being put away from his own limelight on his own sequels. Maybe in the alternate treatment Newt will be more treated as the central character possibly and ironically.
@@nbucwa6621 She misinterpreted the classic advice to write what you know to mean that you should write ONLY what you know. It's easily the least imaginative fantasy world ever put to page. I mean the entire magic system begins and ends with saying what you want to happen in Google Translate level Latin for fuck's sake.
It’s so obvious it’s right there ripe for the taking and it practically writes itself! I thought something like that with adult Harry and Ron as aurors in a buddy cop type show with magic crime fighting
I don't understand why they created the magical deer and described it as the "purest creature of the world"... while they had the unicorn from the 1st HP movie... It would have been so cool to bring the first magical beast of the entire saga and create a plot around it. And then after all the shennanigans, Dumbledore takes it to Hogwarts and put it in the Forbidden Forrest... BOOM continuity.
JK Rowling didn't create the Qilin, it's a Chinese mythical beast. I'm not posting links but just do a search on Qilin origin. The thing about imminent arrival or passing of a illustrious ruler is accurate but the "purest creature in the world" is a Rowling butchering. Qilin will fiercely defend a pure person if threated by someone evil.
they didn’t even create it lol, it’s already a creature from chinese mythology and, according to wikipedia, it’s also often translated to “unicorn” in english, so i guess technically it’s not far off
Wait, so Queenie joined a group that hated Muggles, willingly, and yet Jacob still married her? How is she even the same person anymore? Like, I could see them still having a relationship if she was being Imperio'd, but she wasn't, it came across like very much a choice that she made. How can they possibly have a decent relationship anymore when she put a love enchantment on him, abandoned their relationship to join Grindewald, and then just... came back? Yes she cried over you when you were being cursed but come on Jacob you're worth more than that
Plus harry potter wikia says that Jacob was single, he never married Queenie 🧐 but Newt is "still" together with Tina. Then again, this was after the first movie, I don't know if JK changed the history/lore. Wouldn't be surprised.
Jacob absolutely should have run as fast and as far as he could to get away from her. Find himself a nice lady who isn't a walking red flag, and settle down without ever thinking about Queenie again.
I may be nuts, but I kind of liked the resolution. It feels like in every story, if someone does something like that, they have to pay the ultimate price, and they decided to do something different. It looked like forgiveness was sprinkled in as the theme so...I dunno. I definitely hear your point though.
If the series was all about Newt and crazy animals, I probably would've liked it more. My wife and I enjoyed the first, but we were both bored and confused during the second, still haven't seen the third because we're just not really interested.
Agreed. Just make mystery movies about Newt and some magical creatures. Those movies should be similar to Chamber of Secrets where HP and the gang find out about the basilisk. Instead they are more like Deathly Hollows where it's all about some great evil threatening the entire world.
I can't believe it's NOT about that. Why wouldn't they make that? Oh wait, because it's JK Rowling. It's such a simple and appealing idea. It would have had such a good chance of success. Giving actual definition to the universe without dragging nostalgia bait and dumb retcons into a convoluted plot.
Yup, sums up my thoughts exactly. I will most likely never watch the third one, because hearing a summary of it, the whole "Let's do random bullshit to confuse Grindelwald" let me know that this movie HEAVILY leaned into the thing that I hated about the second one - random bullshit that has nothing to do with anything. Honestly a shame what became of the Harry Potter franchise, and how it still makes a shitton of money because people can't let go of the things they feel nostalgic for.
This sumarizes my experiance as well, I watched like the first 2 mins of the third and was like damn this is gonna be trash just like the last one. Newt is a really cool character despite having continuity/logic issues created by the writing.
Here's how you make a Fantastic Beasts series work: Movie 1: Child and young Newt discovering his fascination with magical beasts, perhaps gets flak about it from his peers. Some stuff from his time at Hogwarts. Maybe he saves someone from a beast by using his *knowledge.* A more character-focused piece to really help us understand why Newt cares so deeply about this. Movie 2: Young adult Newt, fresh-faced, emerges into a wizarding world that seems cold and uncaring towards the beasts Newt holds in such high regard. Now starts his real quest, to educate people about, and preserve, these wonderful creatures. This would be a lighthearted affair for the most part, lots of antics of Newt interacting with various creatures. Movie 3: Adult Newt faces off against groups of poachers, both muggles and wizards. He realizes he has a duty to teach the world about these creatures and settles on writing his new encyclopedia. A slower movie with some pre-environmental messages in there. And you know what none of those stories require at all? Any of the established HP characters. No Dumbledore, no Grindlewald, nothing. Keep the overarching wizarding world and its politics to background noise.
@@kartoffel4050 Yes. And nothing is wrong with that. They could have even made Harry Potter 2.0 by having the Movie 2 about Newt in Hogwarts exploring creatures in the forbidden forest, having friends, etc. And in Movie 3, 4, 5, 6 it can be about Newt exploring magical cretures around the world with some local subplots. JK already had an Idea about different magical cultures around the world during the first actual Fantastic beast movie, but then, in the real-world second movie, all of those ideas were abandoned and the movie transformed into Dumbeldores and the half-blood boyfriend.
Honestly, if we had gotten a 1 or 2 season show of Newt chasing down and re-capturing the various magical creatures, each episode focusing on a specific breed or 2, and maybe the ocassional scuffle with poachers and the odd Dumbledore cameo, it coulda been dope.

i would have loved a "pokemon" like movie where Newt saves these animals from hunters or something like that and he and his saved animal fight side by side. That would have been nice. Or az least make him save a magical creature in the first part and it becomes his sidekick like Pikatchu was to Ash. Would have been much better than this mess.
That's makes the Title more sense than what we got... A bunch of characters introduced but none of em had depth, so you are not even care if they died cuz why. This series are really messy.
I feel it would have made more sense if instead Grindelwald was this evil wizard poacher. This would have given Newt more stake in the movies while also not being repetitive with "Ew Muggles are less because they're different". Not sure if you can make 3 movies from that but it sure would have been more entertaining than a lesser rendition of HP with a Character that has to be shoehorned into each movie.
I think if Fantastic beasts and where to find them was a standalone story and the next two films were a different “series” would have made more sense tbh. It’s a perfectly good plot that fits a one movie story arc. Even the reveal of grindelwald works just fine as a plot element because it’s the only tie two the next two movies given in the first. A separate grindelwald vs dumbledore trilogy would have worked better without newt as the main character
Grindelwald v. Dumbledore should have had it's own conflict tbh. I was really into the first Fantastic Beasts cause the main protagonist wasn't this typical masculine hero type. He was just a good man with empathy for the magical creatures that the wizarding world didn't fully understand or respect. It should really have just been about Newt Scamander writing his book for Augustus Worme and with a SMALL dash of the conflict.
Why not have a prequel with Newt taking a gap year in Ugadu school in Africa and discovering local magical fauna while niffler cause troubles that make a wacky adventure. They could even have diverse cast as they wish if they set story in Tanzania. Black & white people even mulatoes living in friendship speaking German. Ooo I forgot everything needs to look like New York... the least magical place in the world. If they wanted to set it in a city why not Miami. It is near Bermuda Triangle that is famous from weird legends involving time skips & missing ships
I feel these movies didn't need an overarching good-vs-evil plot. It could have easily been about Newt and his friends (that maybe can't read minds?), exploring the wizarding world outside of Hogwarts and all the magic animals that inhabit it. They could have the group explore rare animals, cool places and the peoples and cultures of the wizarding world. It would have been probably very interesting, what magical south american, african or asian magical beasts are like. It could have also been interesting how different cultures use magic and how they interact with one another. There could have also been poachers and other kinds of evil, yet kind of unimportant on a grand scale, villains to make the plot more lively. HP, to me at least, thrives mostly from viewers/readers imagining the different world and exploring it through the eyes of a protagonist as a means of escaping real life. It would have been lot better and less complicated to just let Newt and his friends explore the wizarding world through their individual pov's and maybe let the Grindelwald plot run more or less in background through newspapers and occasional mention from other characters. I guess what I'm saying is that, they needn't have made a movie trilogy called "Fantastic Beasts" when it's about Grindelwald and Grindelwald only, instead of Fantastic Beasts.
@@cryptidmilk4074 I mean, I think she did create something nice with the original so I wouldn't consider her talentless. FUN FACT- When Nifflers were introduced into the hp series, Ron said he'd want one. Hagrid told him it wouldn't be a great idea bc a Niffler will rip your house apart looking for shiny... I'm pretty sure this happens in Goblet of Fire
It definitely happened in Order of the Phoenix to Umbridge; someone levitated one into her office and it trashed it and chased after her because of her shiny rings.
@@kalifogg6610 it was originally introduced in Goblet of Fire and then briefly mentioned in Order of the Phoenix when they were trying to antagonize Umbridge
They said the Accio charm only works on objects, so it doesn't work on animals or living things. I think that's why he didn't use it on the Niffler in the first movie. I don't know what happened between the two movies. Either Rowling forgot or she just said "fuck it" with her own canon and let Newt use the charm on the creature... Idk, but the charm is supposed to only work on senseless objects...
Same with the projonis charm(I butchered the spelling but it's the one that deflects dementors. Suddenly it became an instant message/email charm with talking spirit animals like at that Wesley wedding
Fun fact: In HP and the Deathly Hallows, Harry tries to Accio Hagrid when he falls down their flying motorbike and of course it doesn't work. Later on a Death Eater tries to summon Harry's cloak, since he knows it's impossible to summon Harry himself, but it doesn't work either because cloaks are enchanted to prevent being summoned by anyone but the owner. So Accio is not as useful as people think it is, especially when it comes to summoning living beings.
In the first movie he still could have used accio if he had done it on the jewelry the niffler was carrying without breaking the canon. But hey, lazy plot devices and JK Rowling, name a better duo
I love the moment when Newt enters his suitcase and meets Jakob Kowalski then Jakob says ,,You found the Fantastic Beasts”. Sends chills down my spine.
Whats so frustrating is they made a point to say jacob is useful because he’s a good guy then they have the deer baby pick the leader, could’ve had that pick the muggle as he’s pure of heart and then all the wizards would see muggles are like them and worthy which defeats grindlewald’s whole campaign.
You don't understand writing. If it makes sense to the entire story and is satisfying to the people watching, it's a bad story. If everybody is gay, poc and it is a hardcore gay furry trans species dragon kin porno with no story, it's actually the best, most inclusive and exact realistic representation of what non-white, non-male, non-straight people think reality is... In their safe space.
I think the focus of these movies should’ve been about the other magical schools. Give us an opportunity to see what the rest of Wizarding World is like outside of Hogwarts. We already know how the Grindelwald and Dumbledore story ends. If JK wanted to make movies about them, just do that. Maybe the series called Fantastic Beasts should have be about been, oh, I don’t know, the fantastic beasts, and perhaps, possibly, even where to find them. Seriously, all they had to do was a magical nature documentary starring Wizard Steve Irwin traveling around the world trying to catch Pokémon. That’s a much better premise for a series of movies, IMO.
"And here we see the- Oh dear. um... cut the camera, the niffler is stealing the cables again." "Sir" "Give me that- yes, cameraman?" "Is... uh, is the big feathered cat dragon thing supposed to be approaching???"
yesss!!! tbh i really like newt scamander as a character. the only cool hufflepuff besides frickin edward cullen. i‘d watch the shit out of a series or movie that revolves just around him and the fantastic beasts.
I fell in love with Newt's character. I was so interested in the beasts and different creatures and oh my GOD did I want to see a dragon or something cool like that but instead we got a stupid, boring, anticlimactic EXES TURNED RIVALS story that had nothing to do with Fantastic Beasts or where to find them. Newt became a boring background character. And honestly I only enjoyed the scenes with him. I wanted beasts not two exes fighting smh.
Newt becomes a plot device to get you to the _cool_ wizards because JK doesn't like a non-life threatening plot and she doesn't think her magical creatures are interesting enough to not be plot devices for her wizard romcom. JK says that newt needs to get out the way so the _badass_ wizards can have _their_ turn. Newt is the worst case of character death caused by plot confusion I've seen.

I personally fell in love with the first movie because of magical beasts, Newt and actually Jacob. I found their interactions and Jacob discovering the world of magic interesting and really entertaining. I would love to watch a series with mostly that.
I haven't watched the movie yet but I still think it would have been much more interesting if the deer thing chose Jacob instead of Dumbledore. That would have been an excellent way to show the magical community in the movie that Muggles are worth more than what they think.
That's literally what u expected to happen in that scene, like there was so much build up to Jacob being the "pure of heart" one. It was explicitly stated that they were bringing him along just because of the strength of his character in his very first scene of the movie and then on multiple later occasions. And like you said, it would show the wizards who were supporting Grindewalds whole 'master race' bullshit that a muggle could be more morally pure than all of them.
I would've have been fine with it bowing to _anyone_ other than Dumbledore. Because I thought a big part of Half-Blood Prince's plot is that Harry finds out that Dumbledore is not as flawless as he thought he was.
I remember after finishing the second movie, I thought that if this were a series like Warehouse 13 where each episode was dedicated to Newt interacting with a new beast in some way, it would be fantastic and more loyal to its source material. Sadly, the Grindelwald storyline is fascinating and could have been a great story, but the whole thing is just a mess of two different stories.
i love hp but i could never get into fantastic beasts even though i came out of the first movie loving newt’s character… he feels so incredibly out of place in the main conflict. i’d pay money to watch a movie of just him exploring the world rehabilitating cool, exotic wizarding creatures, not to watch grindelwald and dumbledore beef it out. both characters were 10x more compelling when we didn’t know what had happened to begin with.
Recently Vince Gilligan and the rest of the Better Call Saul team have been completing their masterclass on how to craft a prequel: developing tension when we already know how the story ends, keeping audiences interested in a preexisting world without resorting to cheap nostalgia for the preexisting property, and just about all of the other pitfalls a prequel can fall into have been expertly avoided and subverted to the point where there's actual debate as to whether BCS is a better show than Breaking Bad. Fantastic Beasts feels like Rowling is using the list of prequel pitfalls as a roadmap, and she's digging for lost gold at the bottom of them there pits.
That was what I thought Fantastic Beasts was going to be! I wanted to see Newt traipsing around the Magical and Muggle worlds, finding and rescuing exotic magical creatures and compiling his research into his journals! It would've been awesome, instead we just got more rehashed wizard politics and barely any actual magical creature shenanigans ☹️
Just want to point out Newt didn't want to tell the government about the thunder bird because they have been hunting and killing magical beasts to extinction, so he didn't want them to know it's location so he was using the cover of buying some probably very common creature instead of reveal he has a super rare Pokemon
I think this was really more of a disservice to Grindelwald. Part of what makes him interesting is that he was before the time of Harry Potter, and that he is decisively a different kind of dark wizard compared to Voldemort. In the books we only briefly hear about him, and the only actual scene with him is one of redemption, where he refuses to aid Voldemort and helps Dumbledores legacy, him even supposedly feeling regretful of his earlier actions. He isnt supposed to be shown or explained. Him being a historical figure who expertly commanded the Elder Wand and was one of if not the most powerful wizard/s of his time and all times (eventually matched by Dumbledore of course) is all we need to know with just a few tiny more details for fleshing out. We can make up and imagine the rest. First the original movies ruined Grindelwald by changing the Azkaban scene to just be Grindelwald giving up the location of the Elder Wand. Then they did this, and fleshed him out too much when there wasnt really much there in the first place, and for the above stated good reason. Nevermind using Newt as a catalyst.
I think he has the same problem as the Forerunner do in HALO: part of their charm before they were explained was the mystery around them. Both of them were good examples of how to leave out information the right way. However, the writers decided to use them for a new story, and with that kind of scenario, it's extra important that the new story is exceptional, because the writers were removing the mystery in the process, so a flop would be extra damning.
Tbh, Jacob is still one of my favorite characters. I feel he represents people/ fans who discovered Harry Potter and the Wizarding World and wish that they could be apart of it. It broke my heart at the end when he was forced to leave the world and Queenie behind. Also would have loved if the Fantastic Beast Films were you know...ABOUT THE FANTASTIC BEAST!! Could care less about the Dumbeldore and Grindlewald arc.
I do love the idea, if it was planned accordingly, of Grindelwald changing appearance every movie, just as a quirk of the character. Always misterious, you never know his true face, something like that.
Can't wait till Jodie Whittaker plays Grindelwald in the final installment wich is regarded as the worst one of the entire series after lots of ups and downs
I liked the quilon plot. That should have been Grindewalds thing through all three movies, that he also understood magical creatures but used them for evil. And Newt is the only guy that can stop him. This would also lead into the future where Dumbledore has a soft spot for magical creatures and protects them and Hagrid who also loves creatures.
I love the part in the second one where Grindlewald vapes and shows everyone WW2, the Holocaust, and Hiroshima and then says he's going to stop them from happening. Like... am I now supposed to root for people to stop a guy who's trying to stop the Holocaust??? Even if he's lying about wanting to stop it for political leverage it still makes me think about all the horrific things that have happened in history and how the wizards could have prevented it. What a sensible inclusion to my magical animal movie!
Just show that scene to anyone complaining about them not mentioning 9/11 in Turning Red.... *this* is why we keep relevant politics *out of our fantasy stories*
LMAOOO I agree. I remember people talking about this when the Harry Potter franchise ended. They were joking about how wizards are assholes for not intervening in the Holocaust. I was so surprised when it was in the fantastic beasts. Like really JK??
What they should’ve done was make a three-movie anthology. Fantastic Beasts is the first one, the second one could be about the creation of the marauders map, and the third and final one could be about the origin of hog warts with the four different wizards that created it or something.
It would've been better to say that the power of love protected Jacob's memories of Queenie. It's cliche, but is more inline with the lore, Harry being protected from Voldemort by his mother's love, and so on and so forth.
I was actually invested in Jacob and Queenie's relationship when I saw the first movie…I dunno, I'm a sucker for romance I guess, give me two characters with even a little chemistry and I'm in. I didn't see the sequel movies, but the fact that Queenie literally brainwashed him between the first and second movie completely ruins that entire dynamic. Much like it feels like the second and third movies ruined everything good in the first movie. I will say this: Porpentina (Tina) is canonically Newt Scamander's wife, that is actually stated in the foreword of the original Fantastic Beasts book (the one the movie was "based on"), so that was going to be that way to begin with. I dunno, a lot of stuff was set up in the first movie that felt like it could really work, but then J.K. went all-in on Dumbledore and Grindelwald and nostalgia-baiting, like…just tell a different story in the same universe, woman, don't rely on old familiar names just to sell tickets! I refuse to pitch a tent in any camp regarding what sort of person she is outside of being a storyteller, but as a storyteller, at least, just…branch out, explore what you've made, don't wallow in your old work so much!
Tina Goldstein might be Newt Scamander’s wife, in canon. However, that does not change the fact the actress sucks and has no on-screen chemistry with Eddie Redmayne. Besides, it is becoming increasingly obvious the two only marry after WWII. Meaning, there was no need for Newt to have a love interest.
@@ChienaAvtzon I was merely pointing out that Newt Scamander having a relationship with a woman named Porpentina is an adherence to canon established during the initial Harry Potter series (as in, the good times), and so was inevitable in a movie featuring him. I cannot disagree that the actress was poorly cast and the relationship poorly written, of course.
@@Wandergirl108 - Except, most people do not know Newt Scamander had a wife named Popentina. Meaning, she never needed to be included in this story. Had JK Rowling never mentioned, before the first film even released, that Tina Goldstein was the future Porpentina Scamander, I never would have made the connection. Besides Tina being miscast, she and Newt are a total mismatch. This is not a case of opposites attracting, but more like two people who should never consider entering a relationship. It is obvious the filmmakers did not even know, Tina was eventually going to be Newt’s wife, just based off the casting. Otherwise, I am sure they would have cast a different actress. Which is probably why they made sure to cast Newt’s brother, Theseus with an actor who had natural on-screen chemistry with Eddie Redmayne. Especially, since Tina and Theseus have the exact same job. Thus, being able to seamlessly swap the two characters.
something I never noticed- At 27:00 , when newt is going into his magic briefcase and the muggle (I only just remember his name was jacob) sees him do it and yells in excitement, the cat on the bookcover of "cassandra and her cat gustavus" gets spooked and jumps around. Such a small detail that shows just how much love and attention went into the movie, only for it to get held back by the story.
Hitchcock said you need three things to make a good movie: the script, the script, and the script. People will overlook anything if the writing is good enough, and will forgive nothing if the writing is bad enough.
@@tjenadonn6158 Style is also kind of important because when the dramatic tension goes off when rewatching a movie, you still want to recapture scenes that just look too cool. And, in the way, you became open to the movie and interested in finding sense to what's happening, wich is a huge advantage for movies with fuzzy and confusing plots. You may not like it, master, but you can't deny... Crimes of Grindelwald has got style!
What’s so funny is that Hermione gave her parents memories back after the battle of hog warts. It didn’t have to be the bad memories good memories thing
How much of our happy childhood memories is just our brain changing reality to evade trauma. Yet it is those scary that make our brain work faster and remember.
The main problem with these universes, specially magic ones, is that the more stuff you add, the more inconsistent and nonsensical they become. Previous stated rules gets broken, new mcguffins gets added that do whatever the plot needs to (that werent used before and solve a lot of problems from the past, like that damn time machine), more characters no one give a shit about gets added and more sub plots gets added derailing the main story. The Harry Potter universe gets a pass in half of the movies, because they mainly focus on the castle and isolated places, but it gets more and more inconsistente in the later movies. Mainly because the "magic rules" arent clear or get broken intermediately. Also because of the relation of "muggles" and wizards, it doesnt make sense. I understand that wizards wish to stay hidden because a war may occur or whatever, but it doesnt make sense that these wizards, that mostly think they are superior to muggles due to magic or whatever, live like they are in the 16th century or some shit. With no technology or anything, and apparently they know almost nothing about the human world. Seriously? They literally live among humans, and they dont know anything? Not even proper social behavior? They dont even know what "rubber duck" is? Its way too nonsensical. Add to this the fact that wizards around the world barely interact with each other, like they are different species that doesnt understand each other. Is like they never met before. The Fantastic Beast movies elevate this problems to the max. Adding the fact that no wizard gives a shit about these "fantastic beasts". Is like they literally secluded themselves from reality, living in a bubble. Are you kidding me? And are you telling me that NO human, ever, found these insane creatures with destructive powers? Its way too ridiculous. You have to turn your brain off to barely enjoy these movies.
the 16th century aesthetic i can excuse somewhat. These people dont need to develop technology, they got literal magic. Why would a race that can teleport ever find out about fossil fuels?
If they live among muggles... They may buy food and casual clothes or whatever..? Or do they travel far to fucking grocery shop in a wizardy shopping mall? They must come in contact with muggle stuff.
Like i comented in another video (i don't remember when): one day the wizard world will awake in a Star Trek/Star Wars like universe and the "cops" would be banging in theirs doors asking "what's going on" and S**t will happen. It would be at last interesting.
Whats even more frustrating is that wizards do in fact interatct with muggles, via muggleborn students that go to hogwarts, where the wizards are. Are you really telling me that hermione wouldnt bring a regular ball point pen from home? Wich would eventually catch on and make quills go out of fashion as its a very inconvinient way to write stuff. Because thats what happened when pens was invented. We stopped using quilss because they suck. This is just one detail that proves that jk doesnt know how humans work, or that she thinks wizards are some kind of non-human subspieces. Humans all around the world have one thing in common, and that is that we’re very innovative. We will always find ways to make our lives easier, thats why technoligy is evolving so fast. So it doesnt make any sense that wizards are still living in the 16th century, but I honestly think jk just did that for the asthetics, and never gave it any more thought. And wizards may see themselves as superior to muggles, but lets not pretend that if there was a war, the muggles would win in one day.
Nah, the main problem was that this whole series is a cash grab. There's no serious thought into the story and they could've easily navigated the lore into something meaningful if they had put the effort in the purpose of the literally throwaway lore book that was just mentioned in passing. This only needed one movie but everyone involved wanted to milk the series including Rowling who didn't know crap about American culture and history to integrate her story into. They wanted to make a movie, they loaded it up with cool shit, and they released nonsensical garbage.
What annoyed me most was that Queenie just has this like passive mind reading ability but in the Harry Potter movies Snape literally had to use the incantation. And it still wound up doing the exact same thing. I'm just annoyed that they treat Queenie like she has some amazing gift but you can literally do the same thing with a spell that goes by the same name.
Yeah, I was going to say that Elvis might be confused when he's asking where they are, because it's mentioned in the books but not as this weird passive thing. Plus people can practice Occlumency to resist Legilimency, so they're not some perfect mind-reading truth detector that you can just post up at every important spot. That said, Snape was able to wandlessly and nonverbally cast it on Harry in HBP. Don't know if it was dropped in the movie, but he casts it instantly to find out how he knew Sectumsempra.
@@TheLivingSeven Oh I forgot about Sectumsempra. I know that in the books it goes into much more detail but even in the movies he has to actually speak the incantation. Either way, Queenie having a passive ability to do it is just...weird to me. I don't know why they did that unless J.K. literally just forgot about the whole thing with Snape.
Actually Voldemort was also able to do it passively - there's a scene (or even a few) in the books where he's testing Snape just by sustaining eye contact. But Snape is of course great at Oclumency. But I also agree that they maxed out Queenie's skills for nothing.
My best compliment for the series is having Newt NOT become the "action hero" character by the end. He always remains an awkward withdrawn type of guy, showing a different kind of lead
I don’t understand why having Newt just encountering these beasts couldn’t be the movie, I’d froth at the mouth just watching them, I love their designs.
I feel like putting the "Fantastic Beasts" concept together with the Grindewald conflict was the downfall of this franchise. If J.K. wanted to do things about "Fantastic Beasts" then the plot should have been more focused on that. On one hand it seems like the core idea was to show all kinds of different animals in the wizarding world and their stories but on the other hand it seems like JK was too afraid that this would be a weak story so she kinda threw the Grindewald/Dumbledore story in it as well.
I think the reason there isn't Legilimens used as much because it's hard to learn how to do it, and there are also Occlumens who can 'counter' them by closing their minds. It's a critical part of The Order of the Phoenix. Occulumency is how Snape is able to keep his secrets from Voldemort, who is a skilled Legilimens.
Ronin3453 We have only Snape's word Occulumency is rare and Snape has a tendency to exaggerate how difficult the things he is good at are. Any wizard putting their mind to it can learn it, most just don't bother putting their minds to it.
@@schwarzerritter5724 i don't agreed. It doesn't have to do with Snape especially. In the Wohl harry Potter series we have people saying that this kind of magic if very difficult to learn o a very rare occurrence, only for a random (mostly harry or his friends) casting them with no problem.
the thing he said about getting a legilimens to interview the teachers at Hogwarts to make sure they’re legit is so funny cause Snape and Dumbledore are both legilimens like come on, you had one job
I'm confused by how legilimens works in the movies (haven't seen them) - doesn't Snape explain in the books, that it's *not* like reading a book? That the best you can get are impressions, feelings, and memories? And only whatever is at the surface? Or am I remembering it wrong?
@@LadyDoomsinger that would be expecting JK to be consistent in her lore, and at this point she's basically allergic. So many of her stated lore gets thrown out the window for convenience for these films. It's almost like she is bad at writing actually
It is very possible to fortify your mind against legilimens/learn to only let them see what you want them to see, it's called Occlumency. There's a whole part of the film/book of half blood prince where snape is trying to teach harry to do it to protect him from voldemort, and you can't tell if someone is an Occlumence or not so legilimens isn't an all powerful art
The thing is, Fantastic Beasts was supposed to be centered mainly around Newt and his creatures. To introduce us to magical creatures that he didn’t get to see in Harry Potter. The lore between Dumbledore and Grindelwald might’ve made an amazing franchise if it was a story explored and told separate from Newt and his storyline. What made the first movie good was how it lived up the the name, it showed Newt and all his wonderful creatures. But they added in this whole plot that, on the surface, had absolutely nothing to do with Newt and his creatures, but they crammed the two storylines together. Fantastic beasts should’ve just been centered around Newt and Jacob and them exploring magical creatures. I’d have loved to see something like that for the second and third movie.
True it would be like Harry Potter from Hagrid's perspective. And it would not be boring. One theory says that Hagrid was a double spy. Newt could be too. Magic beasts had a crucial role in conflict between mages, muggles and Grindelwald's followers. For they were scapegoats since their inability to control instincts made them a great tool to cause havock. It it would seem only do harm but they are crucial for maintaining magic. You could see that eagle like bird from 1rst part healing trauma in muggles by making them forget bad memories connected with magic.
I kinda wish this movie was a series with each episode just being him capturing and/or studying monsters with a bad guy probably being some kinda magic poacher
I just wanted a fun "find the animal everyone thinks is a legend" story with neat interactions with animals and Newt being geeked out to see all these fantastic beasts. You know like I want fantastic beasts and I want to know where to find them. So far all I know is they live in Newts bag. That's fun. Like a documentary style movie of this wizard going around writing his book and the wacky adventures he gets into.
what would've been a much better plot is Newt's story and how he came to love the animals. Him trying to raise awareness on how the beasts are harmless unless provoked showing us how he develops his books and also expose us to a few interesting animals. Flashbacks to how he was bullied in school for being different, while his brother was always praised and loved. Leta lestrange being the only person that stood by his side through it all. All while there are references to characters we know and love (or hate), with dumbledore and mcgonagall being supportive teachers. This would be the first movie ofcourse. The second and third instalments could focus more on the different creatures that exist in the world and Newt getting more recognition for his work while also having to fight smaller villains to spread his cause. The 3rd movie could've ended with a Grindelwald reveal making way for another (more serious) series where dumbledore and grindelwald battle it out. Bringing in more characters that we know like the marauders' ancestors, mcgonagall, the lestranges etc. Would've been much better than whatever this trilogy tried to do.
The way this franchise progressed reminds me a lot of how Disney handled Star Wars. Over time they cared less and less about the quality of the actual movies and more about making money off of the name of the franchise
Except in the case of Star Wars, the sequel trilogy was hardly, if ever, planned out and it had different directors and writers fighting each other. The Fantastic Beasts films however were all written by the same person who established the Wizarding World. I think this is more akin to the prequel trilogy but I doubt the FB series will be looked back fondly like those movies.
Snape and Voldemort are both legilimens, it’s implied Dumbledore is as well, but I don’t remember if it was confirmed. Queeny’s ability contradicts how Snape describes it though. “The mind is not a book to be read” etc. There’s also a defense against it called Occlumency and it’s implied anyone can learn it.
@@ninjanibba4259 yes. Harry spends 5th year trying to learn Occlumency to block it out because dumbledore thinks Voldemort could use Legilimency to give Harry visions. Which is what happens at the end when he gets tricked into thinking Sirius is captured.
Seriously, the easiest thing in the world for a good follow-up to Fantastic Beasts would just to have it be the case that after the events of the first movie, Grindelwald and his Dark Wizards start capturing Magical Beasts that the Wizarding World neglects to preserve/protect and start using them as living weapons. And the reason Newt becomes involved is that while Aurors are able to fight back against Dark Wizards fairly well, they need a Magizoologist to tag along to pacify the Beasts that are being conditioned into living weapons. Even have it be the case that the film opens with an Auror raid against a Dark Wizard Beast menagerie, they end up having to kill the ones that’ve gone feral, and when Dumbledore learns that the deaths could have easily been avoided, he personally recommends that the Ministry seek out Newt to prevent another senseless tragedy. There. It’s that simple. You can still have all the other characters involved, but it gives a more solid reason for why Newt is being thrust into a Magical Cold War than just, “Help us track down Grindelwald or else we’re cancelling your traveling visa.”
Would've been more interesting to revolve a series around Dumbledore's family. How he became so powerful, his motives, conflict with his brother & sister, etc. Or you know, keep it about Newt.
Man, I kept telling my fiance how I just wanted to see Newt and his animals. After caring less and less for the main story, all that was left was me watching it for the creatures.
If they were going to expand on any aspect of HP, it should have been Voldemort's backstory. I would love to actually see Voldemort being a boss and the epitome of evil they make him out to be, because for the most part he's kind of just this Scooby-Doo villain getting thwarted by Harry and the gang in the books. It could have started with him as an orphan, learning his powers and tormenting the other kids. Then a little part about him at Hogwarts and learning about Horcruxes. They had a great opportunity to make up something fun to fill in the gap between him working at Borgin and Burkes and returning to Hogwarts to ask for a job again. Show him making his first horcrux and just murdering people. End with Wormtail's betrayal and his attempt to kill Harry.
To be fair, the Half-Blood Prince book is a backstory of Voldemort in a really cool way, but the HBP movie decided not to go with it, and instead focused more on cringe teen romantic drama.
I dont like the story of these movies but i love the aesthetic. I really like the darkish, but egelgant tone of the 1920s/1930s in movies which is also why i like mikkelsen as Grindelwald way more. Depp looks very goofy while Grindelwald looks like an actually bad guy.
Depp's Grindelwald feels SO out of place. I actually physically recoiled when I first saw his character design. Like ... no need for all that lol. Mads' look fit in so much more seamlessly.
@@curnies - I despised Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald. He was severely miscast and looked ridiculous. Everyone in the theater groaned, when he was revealed. Mads Mikkelson was far superior and more in line with how Grindelwald was implied to be in “Deathly Hallows”. Plus, his iteration matched up better with Colin Farrell’s.
They easily could have just said that Queenie used magic to bring Jacob's memory back, which is a thing that can happen in the books. I believe Hermione does it to her parents after they kill Voldemort
Possibly controversial but I thought the best thing about the third movie was Mads Mikkelsen who suited the character much better than Johnny Depp (not to say anything against Depp, this just wasn't really the right role for him). I could easily believe that Dumbledore and THIS Grindelwald had had a relationship where I couldn't believe it of Depp's Grindelwald at all. Overall though the trilogy was just a muddled mess of over-plotted and under-resolved nonsense with the most fun to be had in playing "spot the continuity error".
Preach. I'd really love to see the love story of *this* two. Mads Mikkelsen is so great (and Jude Law, too)! They have really good chemistry - in that 'date' scene you absolutely buy they are in love still and in another universe they'd be perfect for each other. I really would like to see a gay love story with those two, in times and a world where being gay was very complicated - and yet they manage to steal away their moments or have a double life and give a fuck to society's expectations. Not many stories of that out there where the characters aren't like 20.
Original lore: Newt is Charles Darwin. Wizards before were mostly focused on hunting or breeding new animals, usually specializing in exploiting one animal. First movie lore: Wizards really don’t care about learning about anything if they don’t encounter it on a daily basis and usually see animals as pests, Newt is Jane Goodall but wants to be David Attenborough. The rest of the movies: Newt is young Dumbledore for animals, real young Dumbledore won’t let him focus on his work because he’s the least evil but also most competent person Dumbledore knows.
It’s a shame that the exploitation of magical animals weren’t touched upon in the film. If they wanted conflict, this would have been much more relevant and cohesive than politics.
Not super weird that Newt is one of the first experts, given that he usually goes out to find creatures that don't just exist in magical space, but that are magical themselves, so they are more rare and much more hard to find. That's the impression I got from reading the book as a kid. I would have loved a movie about Newt going on Indiana Jones style adventures to find crazy animals. It's such a shame that's not what this is. Best parts of the first movie for me was whenever he interacted with animals- that said, it was goofy and fun, and there was a good idea there, but it was completely undeveloped. She should have just written about Dumbledore instead, maybe with some students from the time in which it happened at Hogwarts, because now this has taken up the Scamander movie arc and we'll never get a good one.
I always thought that Newt was an Actual Researcher and Explorer. He Studies the beasts behaviour and temperament. And The rest were more Hunters than anything else.they are focused on exterminating and neutralizing because the creature ARE dangerous and cannot be just ignored.(well mostly)
I genuinely love the first movie; it's right up there with the HP movies and I'd even rank it above one or two of them. Just a shame that for the sequels they apparently forgot what a series called "Fantastic Beasts" ought to be about
I'm only still here for Newt and the critters in these movies. Everything else is basically meh 😐 (although put some respect on Jacob's name. like these movies are too serious. the comic relief is actually refreshing) If they were going to do a prequel series, I would've preferred something about Tom Riddle or the Marauders (at the same time I'm also glad those don't currently exist, because JK would mess those up so bad). Honestly, at this point, just read fanfic.
Literally. And the fan made content tends to be more creative and keeps continuity better than the official source, lmao. The fact that someone who only knows the concept of what the series was supposed to be about could likely write something 10x more interesting and less confusing is kind of a funny thought though
I liked Queenie in the first movie, her airhead personality kind of reminds me of Luna Lovegood. And the Legilimens thing could be spun into a tragic backstory, like people would be so wary of her that she could’ve had no friends growing up, apart from her sister.
Ever think about how cool and interesting an internal conflict woth Dumbledore could have been in these movies, i.e. Dumbledore not wanting to fight Grindlewald BECAUSE they were in love, but he's eventually forced to overcome that and fight because of the increasingly terrible things Grindlewald is doing. Instead, we have "ope, it was a magic doohickey that was stopping them from fighting all along"
I moved from Massachusetts to Ohio and people were arguing with me about slang for words, so it’s not hard to believe that wizards from different continents would do the same.
Accio isn't supposed to work on living creatures, I'm not sure if it's a plot hole or if Newt is using accio on the stuff inside the Niffler but yea it's kinda dumb that it broke it's own rule when the person who decided that rule wrote the movie 🤦
I wish there was a world where liking Harry Potter didn’t get progressively more terrifyingly bad as the years went on from the first book lmao. It’s like… An actual storybook-level tragedy happened.
Like H. P. Lovecraft was problematic AF as well to say the least, but at least his output was consistent and he had multiple decent series (the Cthulhu Mythos, the Dreamlands Cycle, and the Randolph Carter series)
I kinda like the idea that people created certain kinds of magic based on magical creatures that they saw. so like in the movies how Hermione has the bottomless bag, maybe people created that magic based off of nifflers. Its basically copied from how people learned bending by studying certain creatures in avatar the last airbender. pretty cool concept honestly and does make some sense in the harry potty world as well.
To be fair to Newt's mission, there has to be a first for everything. It kinda makes sense that only now does anyone care about magical nature. I mean, we only relatively recently started caring about extinct animals, and we don't have to worry about superpowerful dark wizards.
@DingDong Well the IUCN (the international organization that categorizes endangered animals and works to protect them) only formed in 1948, and FB1 takes place in 1927.
@@dingdong8629 nah he’s right in terms of how long organizations and laws and shit get created the originations that actively try and protect and even sometimes revive extinct animals has really only been recently created In terms of history
Fantastic Beasts really should have just had the first movie then become a Tv show about Newt traveling the world protecting magic animals. The other 2 movies are horrible and have absolutely no reason for him being there.
Jeez, I didn’t realize how much of a mess even the first movie was. I was blinded by the charm of the main cast and the creatures. They should have stayed that way. The franchise was ruined the minute they decided to co-op such a charming premise with such a heavy topic as Grindelwald. Grindelwald’s and Dumbledore’s backstory would be a fucking awesome story, and it still could be, but it needs its own movie/book/whatever to breathe. I think Rowling clearly got over ambitious and now she’s in too deep of a hole. She also clearly doesn’t have the skills for screenwriting. She needs to outsource that out to someone else.
7:29 the only thing I disagree with… Kowalski is also the name of one of the penguins from Madagascar how can you not remember skipper saying “ Kowalski” the voice is ingrained into my memory. Edit: Kowalski is normally asked to follow up with a status report.
In my opinion it would be really smart for them to remake this but in show form like they are doing with Percy Jackson that way they can have each episode it’s own story on capturing and studying a beast while they could also do the grindawald thing.
Here’s a thing: Colin Farrell, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp literally played the same character in a movie (they played alternate versions of Tony in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), so why they didn’t get either Jude or Colin to replace Johnny is beyond me. Also, Mads looks more like a young Richard Harris than Jude.
TBH that was an exceptional workaround for when the role's original actor, Heath Ledger, died midway through filming. Terry Gilliam really can't catch a break.
@@OlliePawsitivePets I don’t really know why they did it. I’d like to think that side of it was always part of the plan to some degree, but Colin Farrell did get, like, 20 minutes of screentime, as opposed to Johnny and Jude just getting a scene or two, so maybe that was something to do with Heath’s death.
Queenie being a blonde quirky absent-minded woman, who is easily swayed by pro-authoritarianism fascistic ideologies (seemingly at whim) feels like a bit of a self-insert from J.K Rowling.

It always amazes me how you can have all the money, best actors, best effects, best music and... a shitty script. I'm directing theatrical plays. The first important step is to create a good script. You can have good actors, good music, pretty images but without a good script viewers can't build any relation with characters which leads to them not caring about the story, consequences etc.. Usually the money is the problem (costumes, scenography and especially - organising events). :D
These movies would've been much better if they were a much simpler story, like newt just going from New York to Arizona and meeting new creatures or something like that not any of the added stuff that makes these movies worse.
The original film was fantastic. But from the 2nd film onwards it has gone very wrong. There is zero excuse because the film company did a decade of Harry Potter and Rowling has spent over 20 years writing stories based in the same fictional universe. if I were a hardcore Potter fan I would feel embarrassed as well as baffled. And NO I'm not wasting time on a certain creepy Flash actor. Depp was wronged. Warner Brothers are getting what they deserve.

@@davidaston5773 The fact that the actors from the new Star Wars movies talk about what should've been the opportunity of a lifetime and every young actor's dream like they've come back from Vietnam (even moreso than the cast and crew of Apocalypse Now, which basically was a mini-Vietnam complete with unexpected bombing raids) really does tell you that they knew it was shit, were completely powerless to change anything about it, and towards the end they were only doing it out of contractual obligation and would've rather been doing commercials for hemorrhoid cream. I think that all four of the major new players have made it legally explicit that they're not returning to Star Wars regardless of how much money gets thrown at them. Have you ever watched someone as their god dies right in front of them? Thanks to the Disney Star Wars movies I have.
I'm so happy someone feels the same about Newt, and that the series should've just focused on him. That's honestly what I assumed before I watched the first movie. I was originally SO excited because I liked the idea that Newt was researching and writing his textbook, and at the end he'd finish it. A good lil adventure series with some calm moments. Like what's the point of calling the movie after his textbook when he's not even working on it, let alone the main character? So much wasted potential, but JKR wrote it, so why expect anything good. She just used it as an excuse to retcon instead of making a good story. Thank god she's not involved in Hogwarts Legacy. I honestly think the world building in Harry Potter has a lot of good potential, and that's what I was hoping for from Fantastic Beasts. Here's hoping the game turns out WAAAY better than these movies.
He's in what I think of as the Bob Odenkirk Bermuda triangle. Bob had long proven himself a competent actor, but outside his early work with David Cross on Mr. Show he was stuck getting the roles that get actors know for being "the guy from that thing" if you know what I mean. He wasn't cast in the role that would make him a star, Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill on Breaking Bad, until he was 47, and that role didn't become a leading role where he could show the full range of his abilities until the debut of Better Call Saul in 2015 when he was 53. He's now been a central part of what are widely considered to be two of the greatest shows in the history of television as an art form, the driving force in one of them, and that has led to other leading roles for him like in Nobody. Sometimes Hollywood is stupid and it takes them far too long to realize what sort of gold they've got and how to best utilize it.
The reason as to why Newt can't use Accio on the Nifler all the time Is because, according to the books and movies, it doesn't work on living beings. (That Is until J.K forgets midway through the movie)
i think if the scrapped the whole Grindelwald storyline and focused on the fantastic beast aspect with jacob, tina , newt and queeny and quirky fun adventures, this series would be so much better. Becuase the first film is really good with that, but everyhting with grindelwald and creedens is very meh
2:47 To be fair, I believe it was only relatively recently that we properly studied wolves and learned they aren't murder monsters. Granted, that's a single specie compared to a far larger number, but fear is great at keeping us from understanding something, especially if we already think we understand it.
Maybe it's because I wached the German dub, but when I watched the second movie they explained how the blood pact only hinders you from murdering the other person, and Dumbledore accepted on it because then Grindelwald couldn't kill him either (I guess with a person like Grindelwald this is very helpful)
It seems to me that this had potential to be a fun way of experiencing a different corner of the Harry Potter universe (which JK Rowling appears understandably unwilling to leave), but it stumbled over the desperate attempt at tying it back to the original franchise as much as possible and further explore backstories of various characters that nobody needed further explored. I think just the adventures of a bumbling animal loving wizard trying to save his fantastic beasts from both muggles and wizards could’ve been a fun ride without the wizard Nazis.
The Fantastic Beasts films had SO much potential. If I was Warner and wanted to bring the Wizarding World back to life with both Newt Scamander and Dumbledore vs Grindelwald films, this is how I would've done it: 1. First film, very similar to what we saw in theaters with FBAWTFT. Just a younger Newt and no Jacob yet, because this gives Queenie a chance to have plot development besides "pretty, flirty witch who falls for a muggle". Oh, and no Credence/Grindelwald plot, obviously. 2. Second FB film. A few years have passed. Tina is still bound to desk job (you can even add some scenes about her having to work twice as hard as her male colleagues and it still not being enough to be promoted to Auror again because they steal her credit), but she's also secretly investigating this wizard mercenary who, lately, has been kidnapping magical creatures. Newt's also been following this case, so he eventually crosses paths with Tina (and Queenie) again. He has the creature knowledge, she has information and clues about this guy and his whereabouts, so they join forces. Jacob is introduced in this film and Queenie falls for him. In the end, they all catch the bad guy and save the beasts. Tina is finally promoted to Auror again, and Newt pursues a formal relationship with her. Queenie and Jacob elope so MACUSA can't delete his memories and everything seems fine. Except, the bad guy tells the gang he was just following someone else's orders, and this person is too powerful to be stopped. 3. Third FB film. We start at Newt and Tina's wedding. Just as they're about to go on their honeymoon, they're forced to pause their plains, because they find themselves in a mystery involving (of course) fantastic beasts and dark magic. During most of the film, they just catch henchmen and follow clues, until they encounter the big bad guy, who's been teased since the second film: Grindelwald himself, who's been using magical creatures to gain power (somehow lmao). But he's too powerful, so even with all the gang joining forces to defeat him, everything seems lost. At the last minute, they're saved by some mysterious figure, that incapacitates Grindelwald long enough so a whole group of Aurors arrive and imprison him. The mysterious figure turns out to be Aberforth Dumbledore! He tells them he's just doing his brother Albus a favor and to look for him if they want answers. Intrigued by what would his old teacher have to do with a powerful dark wizard, Newt visits Hogwarts. Dumbledore was expecting them. He's kind of reconciled with his big brother (even though there's still a lot of resentment and discomfort to work through), and tells the gang he has been following their steps during this adventure because they were dealing with some dark magic he was familiar with, realizing sooner than later it was Grindelwald. He's actually been helping them the whole movie, being responsible for some clues and tools they've found in their journey, but he realized it all would have to come down to a duel with Grindelwald, and since he cannot physically fight him, he asked Aberforth to help them (he's also not ready to see Grindelwald again). He tells Newt "it's all over now" because Grindelwald won't use magical creatures anymore, since he'd now try to rise to power via other means. Newt is worried because he thought Grindelwald getting caught was the end of it, but Dumbledore knows him too well and knows he won't give up so easily, although he reassures Newt and Tina this won't be their business anymore (hinting at him being the one who has to defeat him). He thanks Newt for saving the Wizarding World and for his compromise with magical beasts, and resolves to create the Care of Magical Creatures assignment to honor him, even offering him the spot as the first teacher for the assignment. Newt declines, since he thinks there's still a lot of work to do for the fantastic beasts out there, although he compromises to write a book with all his knowledge that Hogwarts can use on this assignment (the actual Fantastic Beasts book by Newt Scamander we all know) Newt and Tina finally resume their honeymoon. And that's the end of the Newt Scamander trilogy! Ir would be followed by a Dumbledore vs Grindelwald series of films (that can be watched as a follow up to the FB series but can also be watched as it's own thing without watching FB beforehand), which may focus a bit more on Jacob and Queenie, since their marriage stands for everything Grindelwald despises. It can also have little cameos for Newt and Tina, because her job as an Auror would make her cross paths with Grindelwald's dark magic and Dumbledore's pursue of him more than once. There you go! If you make the Dumbledore vs Grindelwald plot a trilogy too, you would have a total of 6 films, which is only one more film than WB has originally planned for the Wizarding World revival, so it's not such a big change and it works better than whatever they have going on rn anyway lmao.
Hear me out: the stupid thing with Kowalski’s memory having to be wiped only for them to do some crazy nonsense BS to try and retcon him back in could’ve been done much better and without all that nonsense. So they’re in the subway and the big mean lady says “no, like, your No-Maj dude HAS to get his brain wiped. This is me saying that as the president of Magic or whatever he *MUST* be out in that rain. I’ve said it, my bases are covered. Now I will walk away and never check if you stick him out in the rain. Thanks for literally saving our asses and cleaning up your own mess.” And then like winks and leaves and she was cool for five seconds and he’s in the clear to just keep on trucking.
Its weird. I love the first movie, but they gave up on holding onto the focus of the fantastic beasts. And turned it into dumbeldores dirty laundry the musical
When the original movie came out, I loved it! As a young autistic person who had always been obsessed with animals, I resonated with Newt A LOT, as its incredibly rare to see characters like him (and me) be the main character in a fantasy action adventure. As time went on and the second movie came out, I saw him get pushed to the sidelines and I was frankly, very disappointed. I've yet to see the third movie, mostly because I refuse to give JKR any more money than I already have in my ignorant teens, but also because I know I'll be disappointed once again. Newt still means a lot to me as a character, I just wish he was done justice and not written by a bigot.
Very few films have good characters with autism. Early Tim Burton films have them (Box Trolls and Edward Scissorhand). Rango was phenomenal and so was Happy Feet. There is a series Wednesday on Netflix it seems like Wednesday have it but I am not sure.
Newt and Tina need a spin-off 100% about them and the only two human characters to ever appear are them (I lied, Jacob needs to be in it too, but like, very rarely, as in a cameo for less than a quarter of the first and last episodes, and the last episode cameo is the trailer for his own personal Spin-Off of working his bakery and there is no magic besides the creatures he shapes out of dough, but like no magic is ever used.), so we get more of the AMAZING chemistry between Eddie and Katherine
They should have just made a completely separate movie about Dumbledore and Grindelwald. I found their relationship in the last Harry Potter book very interesting and I don't understand why the movie with them in it was so bad.
It went from Jurassic Park+Indiana Jones with magic to Wizard C-SPAN.

He is the most important chraracter of the whole franchise
You all so dumb man.
No offense on JK because she was kind of rushed to finish this.
i swear almost every time someone has an issue with these films it comes from ppl who have no idea what they are talking about
1 newt is famous in the "sequels"
2 he is already dead and his story isnt relevant to most the plot just like grindlewald
3 newts grandson was both at the battle of Hogwarts and in books is the eventual husband of Luna
5 he was heavily sought after by auroas to join because have his magical abilities/knowledge n refused multiple times do to ethics
6 he wasnt shoved into anything to fight evi wizards he was doing favors on behalf of dumbledore that put him those postions
7 just becauase his "job" doesnt pertain to fighting dark wizards means jack all Arthur Weasley was in the order of the pheonix his job was working in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office and Newt defiantly took knowledge from his job to help win multiple fights alot as if thats kind of the point of his character
@1NotN wasn't that serious and using Arthur weasly as an example when it's two completely different situations makes no sense
I would love to know why Dumbledore and generally all the professors went from dressing in fancy old-fashioned clothes to wearing wizard robes
Because that's what happens when you're re pulling the story out of your ass as it goes along.
I had this exact thought during the video lol
Oh you know, wizzards and fashion amiright?
Now that they are old they just want an excuse to wear their pajamas to work
Also how Dumbledore aged so much, thought he was hundreds of years old already and then just shrivels up when voldemort comes around
Newt being a Steve Irwin type character sounds incredible
They didn't because the first movie released in 2016 where the main concern of JK was ecological with the stereotype fascist evil antagonist Voldemort-like.
The big problem being that in 2017 Donald Trump got elected, so JK was like "God dammit, i made a 7 books best seller that led to the creation of one of the most beloved and viewed movie saga about a Teenager fighting a fascist dark magician dictator and the alt right got to the head of the USA"
So there was a shift in the story because the main concern of JK changed along the way being that alt right was still rising
Exactly
I don't understand why she didn't just go for a more How to Train your Dragon type story. There's all these super dangerous monsters and everyone wants to kill them but when Newt was a child he came across one and it didn't attack him so he became curious. He tries to befriend them and finds out that everyone is unknowingly provoking them but if they change then they could live a mutually beneficial companionship.
It'd be so much more heartwarming and fantastical than the gray drama we got.

I think she was super invested in it and thought, since Harry Potter was so successful, everyone else would gladly be along for the ride.
Gay wizzards and where to find them starring Newt from the Fantastic Beasts book
It is pretty funny there's apparently two more films being made in this shitfest. Rowling doesn't know when to stop.
It's enough for maybe a short film or a short movie.
I just realized something:
If the Qilin is crucial to Wizard elections, why is there a general apathy towards magical creatures as stated in the first movie? If you had a creature that could decide elections, I feel like some people would go "Hmm, I wonder if other creatures are as useful as this one."
You do know that the study of magical creatures may have gone back thousands of years and by then no other magical animal similar to the quillin had been found and unless something new was found, the old one was used
@@elektra121 no thats exactly how this works because the minsestry send lots of people in the world to find better creatures than or something liketthe Quillin and if there is no one there is no one 🤷♂️
Newt for example was also send out in the world to find and study mit creatures he is one of the people who search for better creatures. He for example write every new creature in his book or tell the minsestry about it because he work for the minsestry of magic. He is one of the people who study and search for New creatures but if there is no new creature than there is no new creature
Because the study of magical cratures needs a lot of time for example obscurial they exist since 1500 and even after those years no one ever understood how they work and what they are and how big they power is. And when in this century years or how long the election exist no new creature is found they use the old one

JK Rowling didn't create the Qilin, it's a Chinese mythical beast. I'm not posting links but just do a search on Qilin origin.

Ikr. I expected it to be like Indiana Jones and Pokemon, but no... Another Gryffindor.
Here's how you make a Fantastic Beasts series work:
Movie 1: Child and young Newt discovering his fascination with magical beasts, perhaps gets flak about it from his peers.
Keep the overarching wizarding world and its politics to background noise.
then...basically how to train your dragon, but harry potter?

It would have been so nice indeed!
This what I have in mind after watching the first movie
Yes, let the quartets explore more
J.K. Rowling doesn't have the brains or talent to produce anything better than this, let alone anything remotely culturally diverse or interesting 😶
@@cryptidmilk4074 I mean, I think she did create something nice with the original so I wouldn't consider her talentless. I don't know how much involvement or power she had in the creation process of Fantastic Beasts but the product definitely lacks courage ti make something knew and feels more like cheap fanfic.
Maybe Newt was using Accio on the animal’s jewelry?
@@ParsureArts In one of the scenes he says "Accio Niffler".

Wow. What a wonderfully simple and endearing conclusion. I love it. When do we start filming?

Honestly I'm not even into Harry Potter and I would watch that so much I'm not even kidding.
I fell in love with Newt's character.

You're expecting roo much from Rowling. Might as well ask for GoT's 8th season to not suck.
I would've have been fine with it bowing to _anyone_ other than Dumbledore. Because I thought a big part of Half-Blood Prince's plot is that Harry finds out that Dumbledore is not as flawless as he thought he was.
A lot of people say that. But those same people obviously don't understand how bigotry works.
I remember after finishing the second movie, I thought that if this were a series like Warehouse 13 where each episode was dedicated to Newt interacting with a new beast in some way, it would be fantastic and more loyal to its source material.
Sadly, the Grindelwald storyline is fascinating and could have been a great story, but the whole thing is just a mess of two different stories.
hell yes with the warehouse 13 idea.

i love hp but i could never get into fantastic beasts even though i came out of the first movie loving newt’s character… he feels so incredibly out of place in the main conflict. i’d pay money to watch a movie of just him exploring the world rehabilitating cool, exotic wizarding creatures, not to watch grindelwald and dumbledore beef it out. both characters were 10x more compelling when we didn’t know what had happened to begin with.

@@gaminwhale6188 dumpydore ☠️

@@karolinakuc4783 That was also a view I had. But I've found it to be very untrue.

The whole Legilimence, occlumence thing is supposed to be very very rare and largely unheard of to the general public tbh.
Ronin3453
We have only Snape's word Occulumency is rare and Snape has a tendency to exaggerate how difficult the things he is good at are. Any wizard putting their mind to it can learn it, most just don't bother putting their minds to it.

the thing he said about getting a legilimens to interview the teachers at Hogwarts to make sure they’re legit is so funny cause Snape and Dumbledore are both legilimens like come on, you had one job
I'm confused by how legilimens works in the movies (haven't seen them) - doesn't Snape explain in the books, that it's *not* like reading a book? That the best you can get are impressions, feelings, and memories? And only whatever is at the surface? Or am I remembering it wrong?

I kinda wish this movie was a series with each episode just being him capturing and/or studying monsters with a bad guy probably being some kinda magic poacher
wow that sounds like a better storyline

So many contradictions in these movies to the rules already established, makes it a mess
Is that the spell Snape used to see through Harry's head in the 5th?
@@ninjanibba4259 yes. Harry spends 5th year trying to learn Occlumency to block it out because dumbledore thinks Voldemort could use Legilimency to give Harry visions. Which is what happens at the end when he gets tricked into thinking Sirius is captured.
@@lordravenblade ah ok I thought so, so basically this movie tried to tie it into the HP movies but failed like everything else this series is doing
Best we can do is a weak version of both
Yeah! It's two movie franchises that were forced together for some reason.
I mean the '20s as an aesthetic just works. I'm a firm believer that the future should've been Art Deco.
Mads Mikkelsen is the worst actor ever existed. Johnny Depp played this trash role better than he ever could
Original lore:
Newt is Charles Darwin. Wizards before were mostly focused on hunting or breeding new animals, usually specializing in exploiting one animal.
First movie lore:
Wizards really don’t care about learning about anything if they don’t encounter it on a daily basis and usually see animals as pests, Newt is Jane Goodall but wants to be David Attenborough.
The rest of the movies:
Newt is young Dumbledore for animals, real young Dumbledore won’t let him focus on his work because he’s the least evil but also most competent person Dumbledore knows.
Best plot summary ever
Or write them. I bet many of the fans can come up with something a whole lot better than these movies. Several have already, after all.
Yeah, but then you would have to really admit they're gay - and that won't happen for quite some time in the future, I'm afraid.
then they would have had to censor the entire movie for the chinese market...
I moved from Massachusetts to Ohio and people were arguing with me about slang for words, so it’s not hard to believe that wizards from different continents would do the same.
You moved to Ohio instead of moving out?? You must have a single digit IQ

@@sunbleachedangel yeah, this happens to every series that goes on for more than four years.
I mean, we only relatively recently started caring about extinct animals, and we don't have to worry about superpowerful dark wizards.
we only relatively recently started caring about extinct animals? You might wanna rethink that statement
@DingDong
Well the IUCN (the international organization that categorizes endangered animals and works to protect them) only formed in 1948, and FB1 takes place in 1927.
Shoulda did a mini series with Newt going across the world journaling and caring for beasts. But it got bogged down with meh sub plots.

Edit: Kowalski is normally asked to follow up with a status report.
Yes! It’s so weird!
I remember that film. Didn’t they go with that because Heath ledger died during production of the film

I'm directing theatrical plays. The first important step is to create a good script. You can have good actors, good music, pretty images but without a good script viewers can't build any relation with characters which leads to them not caring about the story, consequences etc..
Usually the money is the problem (costumes, scenography and especially - organising events). :D

Seriously SW was practically my younger brother's religion. After he came back from the debut screening of Episode IX I had to essentially talk him off the ledge for two hours.
Mads Mikkelsen is suchhhh an amazing underrated actor, but slowly I think he'll one day win himself an Oscar. He's just so good.
Srsly
It's like Rowling and Yates couldn't decide whether this was a Newt Scamander series or a Dumbledore series, so it's all over the place.
i think if the scrapped the whole Grindelwald storyline and focused on the fantastic beast aspect with jacob, tina , newt and queeny and quirky fun adventures, this series would be so much better. Becuase the first film is really good with that, but everyhting with grindelwald and creedens is very meh
Love Love Love this idea😍😍😍
2:47 To be fair, I believe it was only relatively recently that we properly studied wolves and learned they aren't murder monsters. Granted, that's a single specie compared to a far larger number, but fear is great at keeping us from understanding something, especially if we already think we understand it.
i think the main problem is, that they essentially Americanized the Harry Potter universe in these movies
What are you talking about, i didnt even see an AR !
The only thing missing was guns and cheeseburgers.
If I was Warner and wanted to bring the Wizarding World back to life with both Newt Scamander and Dumbledore vs Grindelwald films, this is how I would've done it:
