Is the level of getting hurt still the same? I could see somebody that comply getting smacked around a bit while in the other 2 situations, especially shooting someone, the injuries escalating.
If think it's a nice info to have if somebody can get it, what is the "getting hurt" in the statistics used? The % of light, serious, fatal injury or something along those lines could make us even better informed.

I was robbed working the night shift at a convenience store. Now that's a bit different, it's more impersonal than somebody robbing your wallet. They wanted the register, not my own stuff. But I also got this impression that they were trying to be focused and sharp. You know like they were trying to be professional. That actually felt good. The dude in charge kept his distance, told me to open the register, to step back while he pulled the whole tray out and handed it to the other guy across the counter. No crazy eyes or pistol-whipping or anything that'd make me think I'd get shot for no reason. And also no stupid openings that would make me think fighting was an option. Special case, I know. I know people who got beaten and tied to a radiator in the back, and I can only imagine how that must feel. But my robbery, that was easy.

Im with the opinion that for self defense, being in an armed society is tactically advantageous. But its strategically disadvantageous to be in that armed society. Im from a third world country where guns are illegal to own. Guns went underground (obviously) and only became the worry of gangs and police. Almost no one is risking their neck at the gallows for petty crime with small money. Civilians dont have to worry about guns used on them. So for low profile cases, its at most just knives or machetes. And that can be mitigated by a random plastic chair, or a table, or a plank. Its easy to understand that criminals just dont want to deal with all that. Thats why our robberies are in the form of snatch thefts instead of gunpoint robberies. As a civilian, I think better lose a handbag and only able to watch it go, than dying to a finger twitch by some robber high on adrenaline. Comparing stats on nationmaster it says that the murder rate per capita in the USA is 83% more than mine. Btw have I mentioned my country is a third world country?

I enjoy what american gun culture bring to the world. Plus, theres no way to reverse it. But theres pros and cons in everything. Like you get a 7% reduced injury rate but do you increase your likelihood of that injury being potentially fatal?
Basically are armed robbers who are resisted more likely to escalate to lethal force than those that are complied with?

    • @smackssmacks1306
      @smackssmacks1306 ปีที่แล้ว +14

That statistic is pretty useless on it's own. There are far too many unknown factors.
Were they crying and making a fuzz? Complying but being too slow? Mouthing off? Did the robber have a bias against them? Does age factor in? Race? Were they handing over things of high enough perceived value? What motivated the robber into the situation in the first place? Etc, etc, and so on and so on.

I am glad to hear that an officer actually trains... often times it is very insulting to a well trained, well intentioned citizen like me to be treated like A child by a man who i could kill 3 ways in 3 seconds... not saying that I have that intention... but police must stop acting like the "real man" to people who have suffered things that would break the officer and cease talking down to people who who make short work of them in either sport or warfare.

My dad told me some of his fight stories including 1 where he was getting mugged. But he grew up a black man in the 70s n 80s and had school fights, bar fights, tried to get into boxing. When he was getting mugged, from behind, he fought back by being smart, slick, and aggressive. He told me this happened after my parents divorced and we were supposed to come visit that weekend. He won that altercation without injury, but it was also a knife, not a gun.

They ‘ve tried to rob me several times and I believe that the best thing you can do for self defense is train “ANYTHING” that keeps you outside of fishy places and focused.
1st time; at the entrance of an arcade. Tried to rob my phone, but they desisted ( I guess there were a lot of witnesses and they idiots. I complied with that one…but still got to keep my stuff.
2nd time; on my way to college through a “shortcut”, 2 18 yo gipsy kids tried to rob me while their “big 30yo brothers checked up on them”… one got his hand inside my pocket and tried to take my phone out.
Grabbed his hand and managed to distract him until someone from a nearby built threatened to call the cops and they let me go un harmed and with all my stuff.
3rd time; A bunch of bastards decided to rob me and a guy I had met in a bar( he clearly had some nasty business with them), They got him to go outside and tried to convince me of going, I was having a drink, so I gave it to the guy that was trying to get me outside while I asked for another 2 drinks… he rushed the drink and tried to push me outside, to which I handed him the next one, and the the next, (we talk about a tube glass of whiskey), after the 3 cups in 10 seconds, he decided to leave 😂 and I stayed safe for the night.
4th time; I was in a bar with a friend and a guy tried to touch me and kiss me. I pushed him away and contours to drink my beer… next thing I remember Is waking up in my bed. Called my friend and he confirmed that everything was ok, he had taken me home, but clearly I had been drugged with mean intentions.
5th time; 5 big ass bastards surrounded me and asked “ what time is it” and took my phone ( another reason to have a watch); but it was so old that they gave it back ( they almost give me some money as they left 😂.
Form all those situations, ALL could have been avoided if I would have not been in those places.
There are bad people everywhere, but it is best to keep yourself as far from them as you can.

That's I pretty much always say, the two main thing to learn in self-defence are :
1°) Avoid notoriously fishy places if you don't have serious business here, especially late, and if you have no real choice, don't carry anything of valor, or avoid looking like a walking cash-machine, or avoid doing stupid things, like wearing a shirt of the wrong team at the wrong place (I'm french, here you should NEVER wear a Paris Saint-Germain football/soccer team shirt if you go to Marseille, it can get you in real trouble).
2°) The first thing you should train in self-defence is being able to sprint at full speed for about one or two minutes... agressors are usually lazy, they don't expect or want things to get difficult for them, if you manage to escape and run away, it's unlikely that they'll run after you for more than a minute or two, especially if it makes them stepping out of their safety zone.
Bonus 3°) Never respond to some nobody calling you just sitting there in the street, waiting for who knows what (especially if they are a bunch of nobodies)... especially if you're not somewhere familiar, if they want to know what's the time, a cigarette or a dime, they won't need you anyway, and as it is said in this video, and it's a very important thing, NEVER follow someone fishy into another "quieter" place, even if you already know you're being in an agression, once you're in the spider's web, you're dead, it's better to get a couple of punches and kicks in plain sight, if it happens, than taking the risk of much worse where nobody can see, hear or help you... as I mentioned earlier, most agressors are lazy... and cowards, most of the time they won't insist if things don't turn the way they wanted, they want an easy job, if they feel like you can give them quite a hard time, they most likely won't insist.

Back in like 2019 I got robbed at gunpoint by 3 dudes in a pickup truck in broad daylight, in front of an elementary school. Long story short I gave them the backpack I was wearing which luckily didn't have much in it. Afterwards when word spread about it some of my friends/people I knew would say things like "nah i wouldn't have given them anything" or "see this is why you need a gun". A sentiment I also see in the comments and just in general online.
I think one thing people dont realize is how fast these situations unfold, and how often the cards are stacked against you. Even with the power of hindsight that let me pick up on some of the cues before the robbery, there wasn't much I could do to avoid that. They were in a truck, I was on foot in the suburbs with no immediate escape routes. They had 3 dudes with guns, so even if I was armed the chances are I lose that exchange. And once they actually decided to pull up, it was like less than a 5 second ordeal to give them my stuff before they were gone.

Really good video, great content - Always good to hear professionals giving their opinion based on experience. By the way, that doesn't mean that every professional will have worthwhile things to say FOR YOU, your own circumstances as a civilian are different in terms of training and probably in terms of potential risk.
As to the difficult question of Comply vs Resist. For years I've taught that 'Everything is situational' by which I mean that every situation is unique and you should have as much training in different scenarios as possible, but even then reality is nothing like practice for 99.9% of people and attacks. However I do TOTALLY agree with the warning about second location - on that one the evidence clearly shows that complying with an attacker's 'request' to go somewhere else is NOT NOT NOT something that is a good idea to go along with.
Secondly, I say that whatever you do, irrespective of the outcome, you are doing the best you can in the moment and you should respect yourself for that. And assuming you survive (irrespective of any trauma or injuries you may suffer) then you did the right thing and you should congratulate yourself move on (and yes, I know that's one of those glib things that's easy to say but damn difficult to do).
As they used to say in 'Hill Street Blues' - "Be careful out there". :)

I wouldn't recommend going hand to knife, no matter how training you may have or think you have. Just because someone trains doesn't mean they can apply it in the real world. Most martial artists train for competition which is much different when trying to apply it to save your life. They dont really know how to fight dirty...they fight with honor. Just saying, don't go losing your life because you think...oh he has a knife, but I can take him.

I think the internet has saved a lot of young men from being stabbed or shot. What I mean by this is that I'm barely old enough to remember the time before online access was prevalent and people would watch movies of action heroes saying smug lines when they had a gun to their head. Then they would judo flip the bad guy on his face and catch their weapon. Of course in real life it's not so smooth but the 15 year old me would probably have felt confident about going against a knife because that's what I saw in the movies and at a certain age you feel immortal.

As a person whose been strongly skeptical of gun ownership for a long time (less rigidly so nowadays), the way the expert who spoke at the NRA framed things triggered a bunch of my red flags for violence statistics. I'm sure the man is as seasoned and respectable as you present him as--nothing against him.
You end the video on the "always and never" dichotomy but I take issue with the "get hurt" outcome of the robbery response.
What is "getting hurt" when I comply? A pistol whip? Death?
What is "getting hurt" when I resist unarmed? A pistol whip? Death?
What is "getting hurt" when I go force-on-force? You get the point.
Coming from my angle, it's probably not a surprise that I have issues with the NRA as an organization. It's not just them, of course, but they're notorious for separating suicide from "gun deaths" in their statistics and doing other sleight of hand with numbers to make things seem more or less good or bad than they actually are.
Simplifying this situation to "get hurt" seems like a bit of a leap. When is getting hurt "bruised", "seriously injured", or straight-up "dead?"
Either way--it is splitting hairs--but I think that's a fair thing to consider regarding these numbers.
If you are reading this, hey Mike (or whoever is helping him)! I sent a Facebook Message and an email to the most recent address I could find. I'm living abroad and will be returning to The States in May. I will likely commute between two states to spend time with my family and there might be a reasonable chance for me to make a pit stop in South Carolina. Would love to train with you, grab a meal together, or even just meet and greet. Really appreciate what you do with the channel and respect your perspective and insight on things.

I just feel like there are a lot of robbery scenarios where complying just hast to be the best option. If someone is using a gun and is semi competent, keeping their distance and ask you to throw your stuff over or something then why should I play around with that. Or if multiple people come at you holding knives and what not.
I guess if you are in the states and get a concealed carry license and you wanna train your fast pull so you can try to gun the robbers down then sure maybe that'll work but damn, I'm not so sure it's my cup of tea.

The BJS study referenced is a little more nuanced than what red polo guy quoted. The study separates armed robberies into muggings (surprise attack) and confrontational robberies (threat issued). Victims who found back against confrontational robbers armed w/ handguns were more likely to get injured than if they didn't fight back. I don't want people to get the false idea that they are less likely to get hurt if they fight back against someone with a gun.

the fighting against knife in a friendly sparring usually is very different to real life scenario tho. In sparring , when you are "attacker" you know, that this "knife" is literally useless, so there is no need to really fight for it or to build your whole strategy around it.
In real life that knife is life and death question for both parties, last thing to lose, last thing to give up. Unless they don`t really want to use it, which is also a case in some scenarios.

Of course you do, that's us 😊, the area is referred to as the "South Valley".. very old part of town, very poor, lots of homeless, super gang infested, criminal/junkie/meth-head playground, lots of mentally unstable people, very dark (literally there are like no working street lights down there).. Oh and it happened to be about 4-4:30am. So I had just pulled up and parked in the cul-de-sac of a poorly lit dead end street, waiting to pick up my buddy for an early shift. Upon arrival I called him to let him know I was there n he said he would be right out giving me the false security to think it was safe to unlock my passenger door. A minute or two later n I see the dark shape of a man at my door, n since my friend had just said "be right there" I assumed it was him- yeah, surprise! I was way wrong lol. This complete stranger jumps in my truck n for .02 sec I thought it was my buddy but after a real quick second look I immediately went into WTF Mode and drew the pistol I kept stashed just under my steering wheel n pointing it straight away into this guy's face giving him some very loud and clear instructions to vacate my vehicle if he at all valued his life.. and to my utter dismay this guy just starts demanding money and drugs from me as if the pistol pointed at him wasnt even there. So I repeat my order to 'GTFO or Die' and again its ignored. Now at this point Im genuinely perplexed since this guy was not at all phased by having a gun pointed at him (obviously not his first rodeo) yet was not making any further aggressive actions toward me like grabbing the gun or attacking me in anyway, he was just demanding I give him some money or drugs. Now from a legal standpoint I sincerely believe that I wouldve been wholly justified in shooting this person down dead and claiming that he jumped into my truck and attacked me, after all who could prove otherwise? But since Im not a complete psychopath (most of the time) I chose the much more peaceful route of decocking my Beretta and swiftly punching this fella in the eye with the barrel of my gun really really hard. Shockingly this sudden act of pure saintly kindness seemed to wake this guy up from his crazed delusional state and he very quickly got out of my truck holding his eye and crying in pain; thankfully the blood didnt start really leaking until after he had cleared the interior of my beloved Tacoma. You could say that scenario was a real eye opener
    🤜👁😉😜🫣😘 😂😂😂
Seriously though I am glad I didnt have to kill this guy, no matter if I could've been cleared legally for it or not. I believe it is our duty as gun owners and our responsibility as sensible human beings to always look for and utilize the options that bring a quick end to these all too common, dangerous, and even life threatening situations, ideally without the need to take the life of another. However should the lethal route be the only one- may our actions be clean, our aim true, and our nerve steady, because there's no 2nd place in a gunfight.

Imagine what it would take to make you rob someone.
Make no mistake. They aren’t cowards. They’re desperate. Two entirely different things. Cowards become burglars, not robbers.
Mistaking despair for cowardice will get someone hurt.

I've been scouring youtube on a knife with a shirt grab. What is your defense.

got robbed for my pizza in Chicago. Was heading to the blue line train so I could go home, and this fat kid (maybe 16)got on me and pushed me against the wall. I threw my pizza in the middle of the sidewalk. looked around and saw I was getting surrounded by more than 4 people. I made some space with my back facing the CVS and made it to the corner on state and van Burren. when I got the corner this guy (probably 17-18)says give me your wallet and I took of running to the left. As I turned to run he hit me in the back of the head. it didn't hurt it kind of just felt like a static shock on my head. so I kept running and threw my skateboard down. they didn't chase after me since I was faster. the entire exchange was about 45 seconds. there was no time to think. I just reacted and tried to find a way to run since I saw I was getting surrounded. fighting was never an option

Look, If you buy a Smith and Bradley watch, you're going to have to accept that your name is going in the hat, and you MAY have to save the President's daughter... just sayin'

I'm curious where did the statistics come from. As in which area. Because considering what I've heard from people about their personal experience, it depends. In Mexico I was told 90% of the time if someone pulls a weapon on you they will not honour the rules and will kill you after you've given them everything

I knew you'd be great in the zombie apocalypse episode, but it was even cooler than I thought it would be.
You should make a Kung fu movie.
