I was three years old when I fell in love with this masterpiece. Now I'm 66.
There is nothing by Schubert that is less than glorious.
Great Performance of Maestro George Szell .
Esta obra arropa al alma con una dulzura y belleza embriagadoras
Szell, undoubtly one of the giants of conduction!!! the change of tempos and phrases are simply perfect!!!
I saw Szell conduct when I lived in Pittsburgh. He came onto the stage walking as erect as one could be. He had an air of regal dignity. Simply a magnificent presence and a wonderful conductor.
Szell, synonymous with precision and rhythm, is a wonder.
Oh, what a great performance! One of my favourites for this piece, definitely, great interpretation of a Schubert at its best, sweet melodies, luminous orchestration wonderful score structure, you name it!
I LOVE IT!!!
This is just splendid. The slow movement makes me weep. Beautiful. Schubert was so sick for much of his short life. Whether it was caused by venereal disease or some kind of organic illness it is a wonder that his ill health didn’t slow him down. In fact he was so prolific that it made him the target of critics. They would write off Schubert’s talent saying his music came from God...he was merely the messenger.
I agree -- I think Schubert is still underrated. It's astonishing how much music of such high quality he wrote during that short life. He is absolutely one of the all-time greatest composers.
When listening to that music, I see Schubert going in a carriage to the outscirts of Vienna in the 1820 s. The wienerwald, the sounds of the forest there, the big quiet of nature, a little stream. No cars and mountainbikes. And in contrast the noise as is it there today.
You speak poetically. I enjoyed reading your exquisite thoughts. Thanks
You know what you think when you hear this performance? You think, Wow, I knew that Rosamunde was a pretty piece, but I didn't realize it was quite this rich and creative. And that means Szell has done his job.
Schuberts music is never just pretty. It is another world.
I was going to say that no one does rosmunde better than Sir Colin Davis-boy was I wrong ! this was excellent !
Die Ouvertüre ist wunderschön! Besonders gut gefällt mir der leichte Galopp in diesem Stück.
You could always count on Szell for a perfectly balanced, straightforward performance.
Saw him in Pittsburgh a few times. He was a master.
Einfach genial!
One of my favorites. Thanks for posting.
singulary and outstanding ... :-)
This is from a 1972 Eterna-label LP.

Originally recorded by Philips in 1957!
George Szell died in 1970
What a sound!
+Jerry Hampton Our Concertgebouworkest. (Sorry, I am Dutch.) One just recognizes their sound in this magnificent acoustics. (Well recorded .)
Nanno Jonkers I have heard recordings of Cleveland under Szell, as well, but this is fantastic.
Читаю книгу Харуки Мураками. Там упоминание о этом произведении. Я не любитель классики , но решила послушать.
Brilliant! I also love Haitink/Concertgebouw 1964 on Philips. Abbado I have never liked on anything.

Simply best performance ever recorded of this work! Is there any relation to Christian Szell?
Such a light and breezy rendition making the score sound like the dance music it was intended to be. Much different from the rich orchestral sound but slow and hard driven interpretation James Levine would have reached. Of course, Maestro Levine was "hard" in a non-musical realm as well.
Maestro Levine & Maestro Dutoit as well. Lol.
Gewandhaus Orchester - Kurt Masur - Elly Ameling
Yes, but Abbado's performance on DG with soloists and choir from 1991 is complete and unbeatable
Oria.
dreadful picture, should be changed
boring
?
Boring to someone who doesn’t feel it….
