I’ve listen this quartet many times through my long life in many concert halls;, on records, with the world renowned performers, yet, this quartet managed to dazzle me again. Incredible ensemble, incredible performance and superb cinematography! Bravi
The second violinist Gerhard Schulz in the Berg Quartet, was the first violinist of our Dûsseldorf Quartet when we were students with violinist Sandor Vegh and cellist Antonio Janigro. We toured Europe in our quartet in a VW for two years and later went to Prussia Cove England for a BBC recorded chamber music course, with Sandor Vegh and Anonio Janigro. I recall telling Gerhard he was destined for fame! So proud of him! ❤
You knew Antonio Janigro? Impressive. Tell us more about him :) He founded Zagreb Soloists, the ensemble I played in for 8 years. And Sandor Vegh on the other hand was teaching my teacher - Lars Anders Tomter. Amazing connection.
When I was 10 years, I received a recording tabe as a gift without any information on it. I started listening to it for several years but I never had any idea about the composer of that music piece which sounded like a magic. This mystery remained unsolved for years until a few nights ago...when I went to a quartet concert and after 26 years that piece was played again and I just realized Schubert was that mysterious composerrrrr. And I was about to cry 🥺😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just played this. One of the most sublime works in the whole repertoire, sublimely played, could hardly breathe in the slow movement, sublimely played.
I can prove your words. Two days ago I went down a slippery slop in the Angeles National Forest in the Cucamonga Wilderness (California). I was totally alone. I survived. I listen this music and reading your words in my bed. I wish you the best.
My friend died last night of an overdose. I had a feeling things were really bad for the past month, tried so many times to get in touch with him to help, last I heard April 13 he FB'd me "I'm homeless close to death" two days later he was dead, 1000 miles away. And here I am, Music truly does heal, I bawled my eyes out during the second movement. It astounds me that Schubert wrote this while aware of his own impending death... this is Schubetr testament to death, may it also be a small testament to my friend Chris.
+Steve Young `i wish you a very good recovery from this severe loss. hope it makes life more complete for you even if you will miss him very much. and music is the language of our souls, so it is our best healing for grief
Schuberts death was not exactly impending when he wrote this. He still had 4 years to live in his short life when he wrote this. But his syphillis broke out shortly before he wrote this and he suffered from depression.

Merci pour tes mots du coeur... my friend died on the eve of his 31st birthday, no wonder I was drawn to Schubert, it's almost a year ago now.
What a music - Danke Franz - Truly one of the very best Chamber Music ever created - so full of passion and macabre feelings of resignation. The performance is so creative, with energy and panache. Sensational !!!
This string quartet is no doubt one of the most disturbing and chilling pieces of music ever written. It anticipates the great catastrophes that would soon befall the world. Schubert was a visionary. He looked straight into the abyss. His music is both a grievous farewell and a desperate warning!
Hearing it again, it grows in richness, variety and expressive depth. Thank you for taking out the ads so the performance is a complete entity as it should be. One of the finest performances of this marvelous work, enhanced by the effective lighting.
this a first rate video. not only is the music perfectly played with energy and passion, but the clarity of the picture is phenomenal , the camera work and lighting is brilliant.
We never realy die. We.reincarnate and we always meet with the people we really love. Life is eternal becsuse our soul is eternal. We alwsys reincarnate, after a period of reposal.

Besides the fact that the camerawork is absolutely dazzling, the Alban Berg Quartet plays Schubert's Death and The Maiden with intense drama, passion and perfection. I have their Late String Quartets by Beethoven, which they play with equal perfection and are definitely my favorite ensemble for delivering astounding and high quality performances. Bravo Alban Berg!
One day, at the beginning of 1826, Franz Lachner paid a visit to his friend in the Fruhwirt's house, near the Karlskirche, to which Schubert had moved a year before. He happened not to be in a mood for work and was glad of the distraction. "Come on, let's have some coffee!" Schubert fetched an old coffee mill, his most precious possession as he called it, out of the primitive cupboard and, having measured out the beans and taken off his spectacles, began to grind. Suddenly he called out "I've got it, I've got it, you rusty little contraption ! "He flung the grinder into the corner and the beans flew in all directions. "But what have you got, Franzl ?" cried Lachner. Oh a coffee-mill like this is a wonderful thing. Melodies and themes just come flying in. You see, it's this Ra-ra-ra, that's what it is ! It gives us inspirations, it transports us into the wonderful realm of the Imagination! "Ah,so it's your coffee mill that composes, not your head ?" laughed Lachner. "That's it, Franzl, "cried Schubert, "one's head sometimes searches for days for an idea which the little machine there finds in a second. Listen! "They were the themes for the magnificent String Quartet in D minor, the second movement of which contains the variations on the song, Der Tod und das Madchen. Lachner noted them down quickly. "Come on, Franzl", said Schubert, "now we'll gather up the beans, so that we can have our coffee at last." From the book by Otto Erich Deutsch - Schubert memoirs by his friends. So there you have it!
This has got to be one of the most powerful, most disturbing and most violent String Quartets ever written. Some of the passages in it are just agony to listen to. To hear it played with such frenzied passion by one of my favourite 2 Quartet Ensembles is truly special.
Have you heard Shostakovich string quartets? I recommend 8, 9, 11 and 15, especially 8 and 11 are brutal, and so good! Most all of Shostakovich 15 are good! Borodin quartet plays them great!
I like how the Alban Berg Quartett is like a special agents unit. :) Especially the more rhythmical parts are so precise but strong and dedicated to the max.
Wow! Love the segue to shadows just before the piu mosso near the end of the first mvt. The character of the piece changed dramatically. Brilliant directing.
If one had to choose a single work to testify the power of music to every living soul, this one might be the best choice. I simply cannot imagine any being not being moved to an almost unbearable extent by this quartet. This is beauty that almost kills you and I could never listen to it every day.
Yes, and today Google/You Tube interrupted this sublime passage with a political ad!! Aaaiiee! But even a political ad could not tarnish the beauty of this performance. The Alban Berg quartet is the best!!
@@martinschwehla4704 I think he was diagnosed with typhoid fever/syphilis around that time. Some believe it might be why he didn't finish the eighth symphony--either that or he just got distracted.
This is one of the first pieces of classical music that really amazed me as a teenager and ten years later, after more than 200 listenings, it still fascinates me profoundly. Unbelievable how many different emotions related to death (grief, solemnity, fear, anguish, relief, tranquillity) can be conveyed in these four movements. From the terrifying 30:28 to the silent mourning of 11:38. Amazing interplay and sublime performance.
Sad to hear they are retired. The second violinist Gerhard Schulz, was the first violinist in our Düsseldor Quartet for 2 years when we studied at the Düsseldorf Konservatorium together with Sandor Vegh and cello teacher Antonio Janigro. I told Gerhard he was destined for fame. ❤
The 2nd movement speaks of death, the third speaks of rest, but the forth signifies the Resurection, it is extremely happy with perfect interpretation! Congratulariona for understanding the immense soul o Schubert. God bless ypu!
I find this piece amazing! I could listen to it over and over. I MUST go see this performed live somewhere. Bet it's an experience to behold! Schubert is one of my favourite classical composers along with Dvorak and, of course, Beethoven. Best Wishes Friends. 🙂
This is a superb performance. The finale prestissimo coda is played with intense energy and precision, wonderful throughout. Can I request that sponsors' ads do NOT come in the middle of the music, but preferably before the performance. Thank you for sharing this marvelous playing.
What a great, great production. Not only is this a beautifully shot recording, but it's also easily my favorite interpretation. They handle the tempi in the Andante exactly to my taste, and they are appropriately reckless and diabolical in the Presto. What a group of guys.
I have so much respect for this generation of musicians. Musical integrity and at the state of the art production. This is as pure as it gets. The strong sound of the Alban Berg Quartet got me into listening to more Chamber music and enjoying it!
Marvellous. The musicians are obviously masters of their instruments. The best recording of this piece, one of my favourites, that I've heard. Thank you for posting.
One of the first pieces in a while which I’ve found myself liking immediately out the gate. It flows so well between all these different emotions and the moments of intensity are so easy to follow and empathize with. The beautiful cinematography is just the cherry on top! Superb!
I heard this for the first time at one of the Cal States. I think it was the Guarneri Quartet. I sat i the front row. It was like a bomb had gone off and I was shell shocked. I'd listened to a lot of classical music, but never anything like this.
Beyond, beyond and beyond! There's the Quintet for strings. Then there's the piano quintet. And then there's The Death and the Maiden. And then there's an interpretation by The Alban Berg Quartet and we all can die tonight because it's absolute ecstasy.
#hmac2222 you are right, its the best video to chamber musice ever seen and ALBAN BERG QUARTETT - there is nothing left - so sorry they dont exist any more thank you musicians and video artist and by my heart: thank you Franz Peter Schubert, my love
actually not magic, its never that easy, in fact i cried in a pratice rom like once. its years o fhard work and deadication to perfect such a unnoved craft. you are taking out th e hardworkb y replying with things like this. we put in blood sweat & tears and im not joking. like i have bled my fingers befroe from playing so long. so, no, kradomir, this is not magic, it is HARDOWKR AND DEADICATION. magic is implying that it is out of the ordinary, as it is not out of the ordinary. if you would stop leaving disrespectful comments such as this one and learn the beautiy of the work put behind music you too WOULD UNDERSTAND that this is not pure magic but instead hardwork.
"...it is very important, when you are listening to music, to be completely focused...You are completely in the thing. And when you listen to music, take a few seconds of silence before you start listening, and then when the music starts, you hang on from the first note that you hear, and you don't go away thinking about other things, your mother, your girlfriend, the shopping list and things like that - hang on to the first note and you fly with the music until the last note. The amount of pleasure you will get out of that is absolutely unique...Give yourself to it! You have to have the will to attach yourself to the music with your ears, and then you will fly with it." - Daniel Barenboim. Just a thought - this isn't music made for studying to :)
Thank you, Andrew Crust, for Barenboim's advice. My tendency is to distract myself when I am listening to music (my mind always wanders, whatever I do, unwittingly), but I will try to remain in the flowing present, once more time and forever! Thanks a lot for remind me the most important thing!
+Carlos Lara yup - same as reading a book innit? Yet I see people all the time reading books with their pods on. Crazy. Trick is to pick a piece that's so good you actually don't want to do anything else.
I first heard a small portion this beautiful piece on the 1994 film Death And The Maiden with Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley. After hearing it I had to find it. I’m glad I finally got to hear the entire performance. It has greatly exceeded my expectations. What a masterpiece.
Te he leído en más ocasiones ( no recuerdo dónde...) y he gozado y aprendido leyéndote. Obligado es enviarte un fuerte abrazo. Eskerrik asko bihotzetik!
Hmm. New York Times had a list of best composers, Franz was fourth. Bach Beethoven Mozart Schubert. I think FPS is maybe the best, but I don't know if you can call him undervalued, since he is often ranked as one of the very best.
We played this song, (Only the Presto movement- but not that fast, played at 180 instead of 190 BPM+) and I remember having a hell of a fun time playing this song with the rest of the chamber group
Looking up info online, i am sad to read that after 38 years this world famous string quartet disbanded in 2008. Incredible artistry! Just thinking how wonderful it would have been to see this amazing performance in person. Left to right: Günter Pichler, Gerhard Schulz, Thomas Kakuska, Valentin Erben. Kakuska passed away from cancer on July 4, 2005, but was replaced somewhat earlier than that due to his health by regular collaborator Isabel Charisius--- I wonder what year this was recorded.
I can't complain, I had a wonderful night listening to this, submerging into Gustav Holst's Planets, among other gorgeous soul-works from distant past.
I’ve listen this quartet many times through my long life in many concert halls;, on records, with the world renowned performers, yet, this quartet managed to dazzle me again. Incredible ensemble, incredible performance and superb cinematography! Bravi

As you write, this is called being inspired: from the Latin "inspirare": to breathe in, to communicate... It's up to you to understand how or by whom.

The fact this was written as the composer realized he was dying. The theme of death permeates all four movements of the work. Chills!
The quartet was written in 1824. Schubert died 1828. So this is quite a bold supposition.

I can't listen to this piece without crying.
The performance is so perfect! I googled Alban Berg Quartett, it's pity that the quartet retired in 2008
Sad to hear they are retired. The second violinist Gerhard Schulz, was the first violinist in our Düsseldor Quartet for 2 years when we studied at the Düsseldorf Konservatorium together with Sandor Vegh and cello teacher Antonio Janigro. I told Gerhard he was destined for fame. ❤
This is a simply phenomenal interpretation of one of my favorite Schubert pieces. The cinematography is also breathtaking.
Very good performance, video is pretty good too.
I. Allegro: 0:00
II. Andante con moto: 11:30
III. Scherzo (Allegro Molto): 22:14
IV. Presto 25:45
The 2nd movement speaks of death, the third speaks of rest, but the forth signifies the Resurection, it is extremely happy with perfect interpretation!
Congratulariona for understanding the immense soul o Schubert. God bless ypu!
The Alban Berg quartet is divine .
"The Dark pictures: The devil in me" - The maniac from this game has very good taste, he played this wonderful music
Maestro violista (RIP)
Meravigliosa interpretazione e video.molto bello.
One of the first pieces in a while which I’ve found myself liking immediately out the gate. It flows so well between all these different emotions and the moments of intensity are so easy to follow and empathize with. The beautiful cinematography is just the cherry on top! Superb!
My favorite piece of chamber music. And a great performance of it!
There is no better music in existence for taking a long winters night stroll through deep, deep snow ....
I heard this for the first time at one of the Cal States. I think it was the Guarneri Quartet. I sat i the front row. It was like a bomb had gone off and I was shell shocked. I'd listened to a lot of classical music, but never anything like this.
This beautiful, awesome piece makes me forget my pain and the scars on my arms and also on my soul...
The second chapter goes directly to the heart
Great masterpiece, great performance, great everything ❤️
awesome composer...awesome musicians...awesome filmmakers....thank you so much.
Beyond, beyond and beyond! There's the Quintet for strings. Then there's the piano quintet. And then there's The Death and the Maiden. And then there's an interpretation by The Alban Berg Quartet and we all can die tonight because it's absolute ecstasy.

you are right, its the best video to chamber musice ever seen
and
ALBAN BERG QUARTETT - there is nothing left - so sorry they dont exist any more
thank you musicians and video artist
and by my heart: thank you Franz Peter Schubert, my love
+Erhard Geiger You're right, the video is just excellent. But The Lindsays performance is better (IMHO).
+EnterMyChallenge I've got their Schubert collection, of the later quartets; very good.
+Erhard Geiger fantasicna interpretacija!!!!!!!
Erhard Geiger
Vienna! Nothing else!
How this quartet sounds!.. Pure magic
actually not magic, its never that easy, in fact i cried in a pratice rom like once. its years o fhard work and deadication to perfect such a unnoved craft. you are taking out th e hardworkb y replying with things like this. we put in blood sweat & tears and im not joking. like i have bled my fingers befroe from playing so long. so, no, kradomir, this is not magic, it is HARDOWKR AND DEADICATION. magic is implying that it is out of the ordinary, as it is not out of the ordinary. if you would stop leaving disrespectful comments such as this one and learn the beautiy of the work put behind music you too WOULD UNDERSTAND that this is not pure magic but instead hardwork.
@@idodrugs7855 most intelligent people know what hard it takes. I think this person is just saying it feels magical
This is easily my prefered piece for string quartet. Simply marvelous!
I was writing a paper and listening to this, then I noticed that there was a video. I had to stop and watch. Beautifully done!
Sublime, magnifico. Espressione e testimone dell' altezza del genio umano...
This was one of the most epic performances I have ever seen.
Enjoyed..like the clarity and close ups and of course the clear sound.
Fantastico! La mejor interpretación de este cuarteto. Bravo!
Sublime.
How can one dislike this video? There is no way to find a reason.
Vielen Dank liebe Belotschka! Es ist wunderbar! Gute Musik zum richtigen Zeitpunkt!
If I could play more than open strings this would be on my bucket list to learn
Franz Schubert, I love your music so much! Please come to Brazil
Franz Schubert died in 1828
Played with great clarity and power.
What a wonderful performance. Whoever did the video was also a great artist!
No doubt :)
THANK YOU AUSTRIA FOR GIVING US SCHUBERT AND THE MUSICIANS OF THE FABOLOUS ALBAN BERG QUARTETT. What a wonderful country!
Absolutely agree. I would die for the country.
Death and the Maiden, this came on Music Choice last night. I took it as an omen, and today the Maiden has died. Oh Baby sister, I love you so much.
sound & music ,amazing!!
Beautiful, and played so well, intonation is "talking" to me, so finely done.
29:01 is my favorite part, even if the odd triplets disappear after a measure or so, it just simply mesmerized me
It's a doubles set, beards against shaveds.
Te he leído en más ocasiones ( no recuerdo dónde...) y he gozado y aprendido leyéndote. Obligado es enviarte un fuerte abrazo. Eskerrik asko bihotzetik!
Schubert is a very undervalued composer. Change my mind
Le Choro I agree
Ave Maria is heard literally everywhere.
Hmm. New York Times had a list of best composers, Franz was fourth. Bach Beethoven Mozart Schubert. I think FPS is maybe the best, but I don't know if you can call him undervalued, since he is often ranked as one of the very best.
Belleza infinita.
We played this song, (Only the Presto movement- but not that fast, played at 180 instead of 190 BPM+) and I remember having a hell of a fun time playing this song with the rest of the chamber group
It is an awesome piece to play!
I performed in a quartet with Gerhard Schulz in Germany for 2 years He is awesome and so glad he ended up in this awesome Berg Quartet! ❤
Ohhh- this is such pure enjoyment!
What a visual production. My ears are Happy!
I can't complain, I had a wonderful night listening to this, submerging into Gustav Holst's Planets, among other gorgeous soul-works from distant past.
