How I Shoot Bracketed Images

  • In this short video, I demonstrate how I set up my Nikon camera to shoot bracketed images. The bracket could be used for a later merge to HDR image or perhaps I just want to make sure that I nail exposure.
    If your camera is capable of shooting a bracketed set of images and has a timer mode, you'll be able to shoot a bracket in the manner. Even if your camera doesn't have a timer mode or, you don't have a tripod, I demonstrate how to shoot a bracket in those situations as well.

    Excellent demo of the two only ways I've found Bracketing is used in digital photograpĥy, first, on a tripod, in Single Frame mode, using Self-Timer, and then, without a tripod, in Continuous Frame mode. Excellent.

    Just an impromptu video shot with my phone. I apologize for the poor quality. Also, I wasn't paying too close attention to focus or exposure but that wasn't really important in that I was teaching the technique and wasn't shooting an image for myself or a client. Hopefully, you understand and know that you need to focus and get a proper exposure to begin with. 😁

      Anthony Morganti this may sound stupid but what's the use of bracketing??

    • @AnthonyMorganti
      @AnthonyMorganti  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually, we'll bracket images for one of two reasons. 1.) The light in the scene is tricky or unusual which might fool our camera's sensor so to make make sure we capture at least one frame that has correct exposure, we'll bracket a series of shots. 2.) Bracketing is used in HDR photography where you merge several images into a single image. You do this in high dynamic range scenes where your camera's exposure latitude cannot capture the entire tonal range in a single exposure.

    Hey Anthony, I'm about to go out to shoot some bracketed shots with my D800 and quickly watched this to make sure I have all the right settings - thanks for making this video. Still very useful :-)

    On my former D7100 and current D500 I set the camera to timer mode and when bracketing is activated the camera automatically takes all bracketed shots, no matter the number. I switch from no bracketing to 3 / 5 / 7 pictures depending on the situation... so the 'Self timer' - 'Number of shots' makes no difference when shooting bracketed...

    Can you pick discrete f stops without even intervals (e.g. f5, f7, and f16)?

    I have a D7100 and this worked great, thanks. The only strange thing was when I had the camera set to Manual with Auto-ISO and bracketed 5 Frames the camera changed the shutter speed itself for some of the bracket shots. In Program the SS stayed the same. I want to keep it in Manual with Auto-ISO, set the SS and F-Stop and then take 5 shots with exposure being the only thing that changes (either 0.3, 0.5 or 0.7...maybe 1.0 if I need a wider spread) based on how I set the EV at either 1/3 or 1/2 intervals. Any ideas why it's doing this? Thanks.

    QUESTION: I am bracketing 5 shots, 1 stop apart on a Nikon D7200, on a tripod. Is there any way to keep the mirror up the whole time while bracketing on the D7200? I am shooting interiors and would love a tad bit more sharpness if I can achieve it. thanks:)

    What about metering mode, Multi, Centered, Spot? Inside no light steaming I don't think it would matter but what about a window or slider with light streaming in?

    How do you set up flash (via hot-shoe flash control unit) so that when the shutter fires and the flash fires, that flash does NOT compensate to make the images all with the SAME exposure?
    I just did a test and all my 5 images came out identical because the flash compensated each shot the camera tried to bracket for. :( How do I set it up correctly on a D810 so the flash doesn't interfere with what I'm trying to do? Thanks!
    if it matters, my flash hot-shoe control unit is a Godox X2-T. Please advise, thanks!

    • @AnthonyMorganti

      Yes, Aperture Priority mode, fixed ISO. The Shutter Speed will be bracketed.

    • @terrym45
      @terrym45 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Morganti A most important addition to the video, IMO. I think you should explain why and how they both would effect the images of the brackets. You are not necessarily in aperture mode but the camera bracketing setting are set to change the shutter speed not the aperture or ISO or in some cameras the WB

    I shoot RAW to both cards on my D800 and I can't do 5 shots like that without it hitting the buffer and stopping. To do 5 shots in a bracket set in RAW one will have to only shoot to one card or take it to 12 bit compressed? So I just do 3 in a bracket set. I wish it would allow me to make the images 2 stops apart since it will only do 3 images before buffering. You can pull the exposures 2 stops in RAW. One stop really doesn't seem to be that much different to me.

    • @AnthonyMorganti
      @AnthonyMorganti  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When shooting 14 bit RAW Lossless Compressed, I can take 16 shots without slowing down when I have two cards in -- CF card as the primary and the SD card as backup. If I shoot Uncompressed, I can shoot 13 in a row. If you cannot get those numbers, I suspect you're not using fast, high-quality cards. I use Lexar Professional or Sandisk Extreme Pro -- Fastest I can afford.

    Hi Anthony, what is the purpose of the .5 second delay between shots?

    • @poopdaddy4217
      @poopdaddy4217 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anything, it's to allow the camera to settle after the minor vibration caused by the mirror movement, unless mirror lockup is on, that is.
