Great video Garrick, unfortunately my Nikon D3300 does not have a bracketing button ;(. Guess I need an upgrade in gear lol.

The BKT button is the envy of every Canon shooter. Ask me how I know.

What’s crazy is that Nikon ditched the BKT button on the Z series cameras. They also ditched the AF selection button. The FN buttons can be programmed for bracketing and autofocus selection but there aren’t that many of them, so there are compromises in the design, sadly.

How would you take the three bracketed shots using a specific shutter speed?

Prior to shooting I assume you make your setting so that you are in the middle of the exposure meter?

Nice and clear, but still got a doubt, what if you need to take 3 shots at -2ev / 0ev / +5ev , not to be -2ev and +2ev ? Is there a way to customise it? Thanks in advance

That is an interesting question……I do not think that is possible to do while using the in camera bracket feature but you can always do a manual bracket.

It should not be feasible to do -2/0/+5ev in AEB (auto exposure bracketing). You may try manual mode to dial -2,0,+5 Ev manually. Or try to set exposure compensation to +1 or +2ev first, then do 9f bracketing with 1ev increment.

I choose 5 shots, what f no is start to shot and end? start with lower f or middle f or higher f ? This is important if we have several subjects. Nikon also takes HDR with 2 shots in jpg format. Nikon D850 can do bracketing: -f all shots under f. +f all shots above f and f is middle, and shots above and under f. That's why all no's are odd. 3,5,7,9. Also can use Exposure Ev= 0.3, 0.7, 1, 2, 3 Please study more at the Nikon user manual. and detail of Exposure EV in Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_value

@NaturePhotoStudios just picked up a D850 to go along with my D500. Dumb but fundamental question: using RAW files, why bracket at all? Why not do the updates in post? RAW file should have all the necessary info. Seems like this is a leftover tip from film / lower capability dslr days...
Now multiple / overlay exposures? that is a different matter...

I think thats a great question and thanks for asking!! Im sure there are many schools of thought on this - but for me, I will bracket when the light im shooting in is of high dynamic range. I just want to be sure I dont competely blow out the highlights of the image. You're right though, the D850 raw image contains a lot of information. There are many times that I will shoot a 3 exposure bracket (either one or two stops apart) and just use the one in the middle. :) and I think sometimes ill bracket in lieu of using exposure compensation. Great question, and you may have just inspired a new video idea for me

@@GarrickGillettePhotography thanks much for the quick reply! having been raised on watching average grey and tweaking exposure compensation, I have yet to need bracketing. Having said that, if speed is of the essence, they are achieving the same result. :) Either way, that D850 has such an incredible dynamic range and great metering, doing some post tweaks all is good.
The in camera multiple exposure features great improvements have enabled high contrast photo making to be much easier.
Would be great to see your follow-on video. cheers!

A person can also shoot all brackets below only or all only above.

For the solar eclipse use all 9 bracket exposures with 1 full stop between. Use a remote shutter release to prevent blur (and exposure delay) and use the Autobracket setting so you press and hold the shutter while it fires off all 9 shots in the bracket. This is esp. important during the totality to get the corona. In 2017 I had to also use a +1 stop and -1 stop exposure comp to make sure I got the best exposures for the corona vs the prominences (about 500 times more light from the latter than the former). Shot about 150 shots during the 2.5 minutes of totality and glad I did.

Ok so I set this up and it still only takes one shot, not three. Thoughts?

    • @GarrickGillettePhotography

Hi Nicholas - Are you using a 2 second self timer? If/when using the self timer the d850 will take all 3 shots for you. If you're manually firing the shutter release then you will have to press 3 times (or just hold until all 3 shots are fired if you are in a continuous shooting mode) Hope this helps
