Thanks for watching this video guys, if you have another route around Sydney you reckon I need to check out, why not tell me in the comments! Hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I had making it! :)
Thanks for this, Josh Kwan! Really interesting for an old bikie, despite my tendency to fall asleep. Anyway, I don't know how far north of the Harbour Bridge you are but here's a different route that would incorporate the same ferry ride. Head south to the turn-off to Bald Hill, which over looks Stanwell Park. Enjoy the view there for a while (as well as the last couple of downhill kays) then head north through the Royal National Park to - you guessed it - Bundeena, where the rest of the ride is pretty much the same as this one you enjoyed so much. Arrivederci!
Hey Josh, we have been doing the ferry at Bundeena for years from Lane Cove. Our difference is we normally go down to Waterfall and drop drop into RNP then back to Bundeena. Makes for a good loop
Great video! I left Sydney 10 years ago after mostly just doing mostly Akuna/West head and now a bit more inspired after seeing your videos since I'm moving back soon (Crow's nest too!) It seems Sydney cycling has improved a little bit too. Hopefully I'll join one of your rides one day! Thanks for the vids
Thanks for watching the videos and supporting the channel. Crowsnest is an awesome spot to do all the north rides. Getting south can be a bit tricky without a group.
If you’re after a ride that involves a ferry you could try a ride out to Wiseman’s Ferry (which would be a pretty decent ride distance-wise in itself). Take the ferry across the Hawkesbury River then turn right off the ferry and ride out to Spencer (which is a pretty flat fast 25km ride). Been a long while since I’ve been out there, but there used to be a cafe/restaurant around 5-10km from the ferry on your right side as head towards Spencer), or in Spencer itself there used to be a General Store/Bottle Shop where you could get a few snacks. An alternative ride would be turn left after getting off the ferry and riding up towards the Old Convict Trail, and onwards to St Albans which has from memory a pub, but it’s a loooong ride, around 70km+ from when you get off the ferry.
Lived in The Shire for 30+ years (almost a local). This brought back so many great memories of time spent in The Royal. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to ride down Nostalgia Way.
Enjoyed this, stayed in the shire nov-feb and visited bundeena and the park a few times and was wishing I had my bike! Been back in the UK since Feb and all I've seen is rain! So envious of you guys. You pay less for your bikes too!
Thank you mate If you do this route just be mindful the motorway and airport tunnel can be dangerous. So there’s a few alternate ways to get down south.
Great ride, certainly food for thought. I'll be over in a month from NZ and will keep the ferry trip in mind, love an adventure. I'll be based in Wollongong so would attack it from that end (@ 90kg+ I just love that climb up to Stanwell Tops 🤪). Great content, keep em coming 👍🍻 Edit: arm warmers and a gilet are the go to for me on those days, can dress down or up easily.
If you want a slightly longer ride head up to Waterfall on the Pacific Hwy (very safe) then down into Waterfall and back via Sir Bertram Steven’s Drive in the RNP where you can head back via Bundeena. This is a great local ride, very scenic in RNP but it might add another 40km to the distance unless you drop the Cape Sol bit.
Thanks thats a great tip. The fact that this route piggy backs off RNP means theres a few little additions you can make to the route to make it even more fun :)
Man, I am an amateur rider living in the upper north shore. Riding the Old Pac pretty much every day, and I reckon those steep hills are a great starting point to shape a rider into something remarkable. As a motorist, I always hated Sydney's twisting and hilly roads, but as a cyclist, I immensely enjoy it.
It is a bit sketchy but I’ve done it so many times maybe I’m desensitised to it. If you’re with a big group it’s fine, plenty of people do it every weekend. I’ve taken the bike path around the airport a long time ago, I think it’s improved heaps recently.
I agree it's sketchy, especially if you're a "lone wolf" cyclist like me. I will spend inordinate amounts of time finding the safest route, so no tunnels and no General Holmes Drive!
Looks like an awesome route and glorious weather. Not sure if you work in the Marrickville CCACHE, I think I’ve met you there last year just before Bowral Classic. Videos are great. Subscribed.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Yes I used to work there on the weekend but sadly no longer due to other life commitments. Hope your riding is going well :)
Nice scenic ride! What website or service do you use when planning a ride like this? Where do you normally go to search for new routes? Congrats on 3k! You should celebrate by buying another pair of sunnies... don't think you have enough yet! also, great music choices! Really sets the feel for the whole video.
I either use Strava or Garmin connect. Garmin connect is free and does a pretty good job so if you’re looking for a budget option defs use that. I follow a fair few people on Strava and usually ‘borrow’ their route if I see a good one. Haha, I have a drawer of sunnies, I cannot fit anymore in there. It’s overflowing. I appreciate that comment, funnily enough sometimes I spend longer picking the music for the video than the actual editing of it.
@@joshkwanGreat, I use Garmin Connect and it's been good so far. I've only plotted simple routes though... I go back and forth between that and Google Maps for street view to determine if a climb will kill me! Haha yes I saw that drawer under your helmet showroom! I find music really important... when doing my little holiday videos I usually pick the music before the trip and shoot to it. Sometimes it doesn't work so I have a backup song. I'm quite sure it was your music choice in your early videos that got me following your vids!
I reckon the easiest is to find a local cycling club and steal their routes off Strava haha. It’s hard to describe but music really sets the tone and the pacing of a video. For example I find that if the music is too fast then it makes the riding look too slow and boring. Haha anyway, finding that perfect song feels amazing
NSW government is building a ferry wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell, the name is Kamay Ferry Wharves and it's expected to be completed by late 2024. If it's true maybe next year Easter you can try it as a leisure route.
There is no confirmed ferry service being implemented at present. If there is, it will revolutionaries coastal riding in Sydney, cutting out having to do the deadly airport tunnel.
I am so jealous, I have never done 100k in my life and now I tend to ride alone. Though I am working on that second issue. But it was fun to watch this ride and id the sections of the trip with only Bandina & Cape Solander being areas I have never been. Riding through that tunnel under the airport runway required some cojónes I think due to Sydney traffic being so aggressive and intolerant of cyclists and there being no actual cycle lane.
Glad I could give you something fun to watch :) Airport tunnel isn’t too bad early in the morning when it is quiet, but defs safer with a group which is more visible.
You've got to do a bit more RNP riding, Josh - while the Bundeena ferry isn't most people's every-weekend route it's certainly not super rare. For my part, living south of the Harbour bridge, I have never seen anyone post a ride on strava with the Palmy-Gosford ferry on it. Goes to show.
My old friend that I ride with some Tuesdays has completed this very ride over a day with a veterans group and they did it last year but have limited visibility on Strava .

That sounds great. It sounds like this is actually a well trodden route. Surprised I’ve never seen anyone do it before.
Another great ride and video.
More than 15 yrs since I lived in Sydney but proud to say I recognised it all.
Some things don’t change (much) 😂

@@AndyTychon I’ve mapped this route before but have yet to ride it. Thanks for reminding me and giving me your suggestions :)
Used to do that ferry loop on my bike in the late 60's. Good ride.
That’s awesome. I’ve heard the Bundeena road only recently got resurfaced. I’m sure Sydney as a whole looked much more different back then too.
Great ride ride. Another good ride the water fall drop through national Park to bald Hill look out back up to the old princes hyway back to Sydney.
Yes, that’s one of my favourites. Sadly I don’t make my way down south often enough. But I’m defs craving a good Bald Hill ride
Wicked ride! Such nice scenic views over east
Thanks!

Gotta love it when a plan comes together!
👍👍
One of those days where everything came together :)
more vids more vids. loving the content dude. youve basically taught me to ride and ride in sydney hopefully see you out there.
Thank you for the encouragement mate! I am pumping out the vids as fast as I can. Wish I had more time!!

Beautiful part of the world, feels almost secluded. We have it pretty good here in Sydney, cannot complain :)
great video, tks
Love your discipline my g
Nice video man! good route to do next time Im in Sydney.
Thank you mate

Awesome video Josh, it was the perfect day out with you guys. Day dreaming about more rides like this. Need to catch Peter on that hill next time ;)
I think the whole ride I was smiling. One of my favourite days in cycling for sure. Wouldn't be the same without the fine company too ;)
Five Ferry loop - Ettalong, Wisemans, Portland, Sackville, Berowra Waters. 250 odd kays and 3600 ish climb.
Hahaha now that’s an idea 😅😅😅
Defs a long weekend kind of ride.
Nice route, and you guys look like a good group :-) Might have to try this some day!

Awsome route
Thanks! General Holmes Drive and the tunnel is a bit sketchy no? I prefer the bike path that traces around the western side of the airport.

RNP Grand slam - 150km 3450m vert - except Garie Beach is shut - could be a big day out for pastries?
Considering its about 40km for us to get to RNP it will be a huge day.
When is Garie beach going to be re-opened?

A ferry route is getting built as we speak. Sydney-lapa-kurnell-cronulla-bundeena can happen at some stage. Not sure what the fee will be with a bike?
That sounds awesome. But might be very expensive haha!
I may not be first in a race, but first in comments. Great video!
Its defs a race :) and you win 🎉🎉🎉
Ferry slightly bigger than the one my mum and dad came over with 😂
Hahaha ded
Probably about the same level of sea worthiness too
well done all

Looks like a great different ride as i nornally ride Randwick to Otford via RNP. Maybe the ferry next time for variety.
On a beautiful day like we had this weekend it’s truely something spectacular. Otford to Randwich is quite the ride!
@joshkwan I just take it nice and slow. Stay under 3w/kg and also riding 34x34 up those hills lol!
3w/kg is not messing around either!
34x34 is a great gear combination, spin to win
Do the Bundeena Ferry trip regular in Summer.
Love your work man but please, ferry rhymes with berry not hairy haha sick day out!
Hahahaha tomato, tomato :P
Thanks for watching!
I can’t believe you do such distances with no electric assistance at all
Syd ferry's should look into bike hooks . Some kind of stacking
That would be handy, and also free up room for other passengers
Take a shot of EPO every time Josh says 'ferry' challenge (get absolutely juiced)

Do this ride once a month but enter the RNP via Stanwell Tops. The best descent in and around Sydney!
That would be an absolute epic ride. Probably bring it to around 160km for me. Thats a good day on the saddle.
Around 140km from CP
Bang on then, it’s 10km for me to get to CP
Do it soon. It’s my favourite ride 👍
