- In this video I'm looking at a few possibilities for how Cloud Strife's story could pan out in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and speculating about what Sephiroth wants with him.

Have you read On the Way to a Smile and Case of Lifestream: Black? Nojima wrote it as the bridge between the OG and Advent Children, and it’s very informative regarding Sephiroth’s motives as well as Aerith’s. But the important bit which sheds light on Remake is that Sephiroth wanted to prevent the Lifestream from completely eroding his spirit so he deduced that he could preserve his essence if he latched himself onto someone/made his memories of them the core of his consciousness. He chose Cloud. So Sephiroth actually allows the Lifestream to take all his memories of his life before the Nibelheim incident while clinging to his memories of Cloud. He even says that as long Cloud exists, he will exist as well. It lines up with certain things Sephiroth says in Remake: how important his shared memories with Cloud are, how intent he is on Cloud not forgetting him and why he says that he won’t let Cloud die at the Edge of Creation.
There’s also the matter of the pure S cells inside Cloud. Hollander says in Crisis Core that the S cells in Zack were rendered ineffective by Zack’s prior SOLDIER treatments and were therefore useless. But Cloud is the only living person who possesses pure S cells. That might factor into Sephiroth’s plans for Cloud specifically.
The only reason I don’t think Sephiroth is worried about Zack is because Zack already tried to stop Sephiroth and failed. I feel like Zack has been brought back into the story because Tifa alone won’t be enough to save Cloud’s psyche this time. OR Sephiroth could be planning on using Zack to shatter Cloud’s mind-basically shove the truth in Cloud’s face, watch his crumble and then possess Cloud.
Sephiroth does body snatch. In the Whirlwind Maze when he slashes at cloaked figures, he claims “This body has outlived its usefulness” and then disappears
Ooh, that idea about Zack's version of Cloud being turned into the clone we saw is brilliant, that makes total sense. And like you said, Sephiroth is very likely to use one of the Clouds as bait for Zack to do...something. Agh, there's so much we don't know, I wish Rebirth was coming out sooner! Good vid. Interesting thoughts here, but I don’t like the idea of Zack taking over the party if or when we lose Cloud. The whole point of losing Cloud is losing Cloud. The main man. It would not have the same impact if Zack just replaced him. I’m not saying it can’t happen, I just don’t like it and I hope it doesn’t come into fruition
Yeah i'm not a huge fan of it myself tbh, Cloud is the main man, always has been and always will be in my eyes.
It's his story, his life we're playing through here.

Cloud is literally the most popular character in the entire Final fantasy series. He's been the face of final fantasy for more than two decades. There's no chance in hell anyone will take over his place that doesnt even make any sense.

@@ali-d7662 sure I love zack story too but ff7 main story is all about cloud overcoming is inner demons and finding out who he is again. If they ever change that its not ff7. In fact if they take all the consequences to the story like major deaths i dont see how the remake its going to be as memorable as the original. Its just dumbing down a story for a fake happy ending. I'll guess we'll see.
I think cloud is the most successful sephi clone. Could be he wants his body. Then again he may want cloud to himself. To travel the universe just the two of them. In cloud there is someone he has something physically in common with. Cloud is the only one who can keep up with him.
What is cloud was The offspring of sephiroth that we don't know about because when he was a good guy in the army what if he met somebody and had a child
I’m not sure Sephiroth could ever control/take over Zack. Hojo’s experiment did not work on Zack, just Cloud.
Hojo didnt make the same experiment on zack that he did on Cloud. Hojo says that Cloud (Just cloud) it's going to be an interesting test subject because of what Cloud just did. Picked up sephiroth and threw him into the reactor. Even Sephiroth was shocked. That's why he's the main character of the story. There's something special about him and thats why hojo tests on him.
Zack does still have JENOVA cells though so it would be possible.
I wonder if it's a matter of using both Zack and Cloud as a vessel for Sephiroth because Cloud is incomplete without Zack? If the 25th anniversary has anything to do with it, I think we have an answer there. Sephiroth needs Cloud to survive, and Cloud needs Zack to survive, and it's just a cycle between the three. I'm sure we'll have many more ideas after Sleepezi drops his video, though.

At the end of the day, what they have done with this story has never been done in fiction. This villain and this remake/sequel treatment, and the plot relevant lore that is deeper than meets the eye. There will be more great stories to come in our lifetimes, and one might find good older stories too. But right now, and in the next few years, we're getting something that has never been and might not ever be done in storytelling again, or at least not with this much skill and love. Strap yourselves in and enjoy the show!!!
I like to get pretty hyped, I will admit. What ever happens I'll be sure to have fun! I didn't mean unique when it came to time stuff, maybe my language and phrasing wasn't as accurate as I wanted it to be lol. I know a little bit about the Baldur's Gate series, which is amazing. Back to the Future was a fun movie trilogy but I can't say I really care about comedy action. For me, some of the FF games are the few video games that I still play. In truth the VIIR series might be my swan song, and I get hyped up like it's a sporting event and I'm happy for it win or lose. Over time I've turned into more of a book reader. Getting older I can take a lot more of a page than a screen. In the few stories when time gets involved I prefer a harsher consequence for the characters. SK's Dark Tower series was probably my favorite because that hurt really bad. The last character in any story that I'd want to be is Roland Deschain, if you know who that is.

So we're assuming things are as they seem and Sephiroth really does have memories of events from the original timeline rather than that plot thread being some massive misdirection for some later twist. In that case I think the most straightforward answer is probably true and that Sephiroth has come to accept that for whatever reason Cloud has the power to defeat him. Even back when cloud was a normal infantry man and Sephiroth was the hero of the war he somehow summoned the super human strength to defeat him at the Nibleheim reactor, and then again every single time even though Sephiroth had attained god like powers. Once is a fluke, three times is a pattern. So I think Sephiroth was being completely genuine when he asked Cloud to join him at the end of Remake. He's obviously manipulating him for his own goals but I do not believe it's as a mere puppet like in OG, I think Sephiroth truly wants Cloud to join him as an ally and an equal. Cloud has Jenova cells implanted in him after all, perhaps while brooding over his defeats Sephiroth found himself thinking that in another world if things had gone just a little differently, Cloud could have joined forces with him... and now here we are.
Sephiroth needs Cloud to stay "alive", per the Lifestream Dark. He does this by having Cloud remember him - and what better way than to drive the hatred knife deeper and deeper (the reminder of his mother's death as one example). This is very horcrux-esque, no comment on whether this is good or not as a narrative device because it implies Cloud has to die to end what appears to be a cycle going on.
Zack is a secondary character, but if the planet kept him alive it's to counteract what the main party has done. I still say we fight Zack as he'll appear as a whisper the same way the advent children did at the end of Remake. He kills Aerith, Cloud kills him, and it all gets revealed (to the character and the player) after the fact.
I like your rebirth of Sephiroth theory. Makes sense after how "remake" was applied. I always thought it was Jenova that would be reborn.

Cloud becoming a Jenova clone and Zack going to save him makes a lot of sense if you subscribe to the theory that Zack meets up with the party at the Whirlwind Maze in time to see Cloud go nuts and hand over the black materia.
Both would be fun, but i'm not saying it definitely won't happen, but my gut feeling is TGS rather than Gamescom.

Sephiroth needs the weakest cloaks to take more control of them. The fact the Cloud is stronger means he has less chance to take over him, kinda like a game of tug of war
Yeah he definitely needs to break Cloud down before he can manipulate him fully.
I feel like Zack's version of Cloud will be the final boss of Rebirth.

No it'll be the same Yuffie I think, her reaction to the purple smoke in the latest Rebirth trailer is a big hint I think.
What if the cloud clone kills Aerith? That’s probably why Sephiroth wanted Zack to survive. He wasn’t after Zack, but he needed another Cloud to remain in his broken state.
either sephiroth sort of gets redeemed and gets rid of jenovas mindcontrole like is hinted at at the end of ff7 remake part1 and he wants to have cloud and possible the team on his side against jenova or he is stil sceming to get rid of them all like in the original.
interestingly enuf from what we know of jenova she had a to small role in the original because of sephiroth gets his powers from her dna that would mean she is even stronger then sephiroth yet the original made it seem like she is second fiddle to him.
What if Zach isn't really alive...what if it is cloud just thinking he is Zach and it is allusion
It'd be very interesting if that was the case, but then surely things would pan out the same as they did if it was just Cloud thinking he's Zack?

@@Sector6UK I think both are a possibility. * spoilers * but zach comes back world of final fantasy from the dead and chases cloud and never sees him. This likely was to be followed up in the sequel game. If zach is really back. I would put stock into world of final fantasy. Which has implications for kingdom hearts and the multiverse. If zach isn't real. Then I would throw the lore away.
Hmm, maybe the party will meet up with Zack, Cloud won't remember him yet, and later on he'll have a flashback (or Sephiroth will taunt him), and then he'll remember Zack!
The white feather makes me think Angeal saved Zack.
Quite simply, I believe remake was done with Zack already alive. That event is months before ff7 remake started. As such, quite simply, no need for Zack or Aerith. The planet is doomed without omega from dirge. Prevent dirge, omega still exists, Sephiroth can use the planet as a ship and travel. No omega, no og Sephiroth plan.
Also... 3 of the 4 titles 8n the compilation has been about fulfilling destiny or struggling to change destiny and yet not being able to defy their fate no matter what, by yourself yiu can do nothing.. The 5th entry is about being able to change it together.. not alone but together, enemy and friendly working together.
