You compared the 65mm on the Sony E-Mount system to 50 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.4 ZA, but what about the very popular 55 f/1.8 ZA that is much closer in terms of the focal range and price?
Great review. There is also the exceptionally great Voigtländer 65 mm manual focus lens for e-mount, the Zeiss 55 f/1.8, the Zeiss Loxia 50 f/2.0, and the Samyang 50 and 75 mm, and I probably forgot one or two or more 😉

The 65mm sounds like a very nice focal length - longer than 50mm, but not too tight. Good for taking pictures of people. And with high mpx cameras, I was expecting all brands to move a bit to wider focal lengths for versatility - you can always crop.
Def didn't expect the review to be on the L-mount. Good work, team. I am used to the Sigma stuff being reviewed by the "pro's" on a Sony body, and never on the L, so people are always like, "It shoots so fast," but then you buy it on L and you're all like, "Uh, no. Uh, nope, sir." I bought the 35mm 1.2 from Sigma twice to use on L, thinking I might've had a bad copy the first time. Nope. I just couldn't use it for what I normally shot, which was sports and entertainment at the time. Beautiful renders, but impossible focus in CAF.
Very nice short overview, but I've definitely noticed the missing comparison with Sony 55mm 1.8 which is closer to 65mm than 85mm is. As well as some other options in 50/85 group (as well as 70-180/200, which are almost 65).
Some reviewers have noted that these Sigma lenses have a lot of distortion. Can you input their lens profile in the camera to compensate for that distortion same as you can do on a Sony camera? If not, how do you deal with that distortion?
You're both wrong (and right, I guess) - 35mm and 65mm both rock! Admittedly, I'd rather go 35/85, but 65 is also really cool and there are enough 85mms, so I'm still happy they went for the 65. Those sharpness tests definitely looked like stopping down, while not increasing sharpness, adds contrast.
Thank you. The focus breathing test (35mm f2) was the deal-breaker for me. The Sony 35mm 1.8 is the better option for video in terms of focus breathing (with very little).
Funny - as a Nikon shooter I don't plan on buying either lens, but I enjoy watching Chris and Jordan so much that I will watch the video anyway!! Hands down the best gear review videos online.
Great review, as usual! I shoot Nikon Z, but I adore these lenses. Sigma is killing it with lenses (and always have! My favorite and first was the 30mm 1.4/f APS C lens from back in the day and now the 35mm 1.4 Art for FF). Magnetic filters are great and they look great size and bokeh-wise.
I’m with Jordan, why a 65mm focal length for full frame unless it’s a macro lens? I do like the DG DN series though. I have the 30/1.4 for my A6000 and it’s wonderfully built and operates beautifully. You can find real bargains on the used market.
I know this is an older video but wanted watch it because I have both the 35mm and 65mm Sigma lenses and also enjoy watching videos where Chris is scared of his own shadow cast by a lens with 35mm focal length. Take care.
really hope they’ll make an 85 2.8 and 18 2.8 those would be perfect for the a7c and it’s kit lens: ultra compact and aperture ring (this camera only has 2 gears) 🙏🙏🙏please sigma
Are these lenses weather sealed (as in, seal at every moving point), or do they only have 1 seal at the mount? I thought it was the latter but would be happy to be wrong.
This episode was shot with the FX6, not the FX9. But I do agree, it makes a big difference. Hoping to get my preordered one in early:-D I plan to do a review comparing it to the Canon C70, of which I have already made a few videos about on my channel. If you have any ideas for the comparison be sure to comment.
What kind of metal is it ? Is it really weather sealed ? I heard it's only at the gasket level, so how would the lens reacts to some light rain or just ambient humidity ?
Waw I can't believe you said that, I don't like 35mm! I have the Zuiko 35mm F2 and it's the only reason I would consider getting 35mm milc. I find it and the 50mm F1.4, 28mm F2 about all the lens I need...Can I ask why it so big compared to Zuiko 35mm F2, I thought Milc was meant to make it smaller...
@@niccollsvideo because you have to purchase an mc-11 adapter to use it on my Sony A7ii. Is the 24-70 the better choice because you dont have to use an adapter?
This is sharper than the 35 FE and 35 Samyang f/1.8, confirmed by many sites, it's actually just as sharp as the 35 f/1.2 Sigma. Check out the LensTip, Cameralabs, TheDigitalPicture analysis and comparisons of this lens. Best Sony FE 35mm lens until the GM comes out. DustinAbbott also compared it with the Sony and Samyang.
Wait... Did you just call the Sony Zeiss 50/1.4 "kind of lackluster"..? th-cam.com/video/MYl6-PCrd5c/w-d-xo.html That's literally the first negative comment I've ever heard from anyone about that lens. Hope you can test it again one day. My experience, it's the finest fifty I've owned in forty years of working professionally. The ZA got me to sell my Otus 55. The only lens I've found that comes close is the Sigma 40/1.4.
Are they really weather sealed?? On their website says only mount is weather sealed, doesnt say anything about rest of the structure?? Does anyone know? Thanks!
Loving it. I have one on preorder that I will be comparing to the C70 in an upcoming video on my channel. I’m surprised you haven’t done a C70 video yet? In any case I’m mighty interested to hear your take on this camera. I recently got back into Sony, so it’s going to be this or stick with Canon. I keep up the good work!
65 remind me of old film Zenith camera with helios 58 f2 prime. It was "standard" shoot-everything lens at that time and it was enough :-) But Sony has got excellent 55 f1,8 Zeiss so I dont think this lens will be very popular.
I bought every L lens (except tilt and anything over 200) before I bought a 35mm 1.4. If I had to do it all over again, I'd buy a 35mm 1.4 first and just the 135.
With this price I'd rather buy a Nikon 35 S. At least you'll have less problems with flare cause of latest Nikon coatings. Sigmas are not cheap nowadays...
Thanks for the checking out the lenses, fellas! And don't worry Chris, the 35mm we sent you was confirmed 100% evil-free before leaving the factory.
I know I probably won't get an answer, but are there any plans to release a 500/600mm 5.6/6.3 prime for birding?
@@jillianangell2570 No plans that we know of, Jillian. Any new products would be announced publicly by SIGMA Global.
great lenses, the I line up is great for those looking small quality primes, they are like Sony-crons :)

It’s a great lens - but breathes like a dragon. Still: terrific.
You get an honourable mention in my review Chris...
yes, heard it
You got em beat Gordon !
I appreciate it Gordon. It's an accurate statement too!
4:55 Jordan remembered the Summicron-SL, but forgot the F/1.2 ;)

Actually ... 6 * 5 * 65 / 5 + 65 + 65 + 65 + 65 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 666 ... 😂
Noooooooo!!!!!!
55 1.8 Zeiss.. AM I dead to you Chris?!
Yeah it's actually quite good👌👌
The Sigma 70mm Macro might also be an alternative.
That was exactly my thought. I would have loved to hear how this one compares to the Sigma
That's the (nice) problem..there are so many in e mount around 50mm... We got manual voigtlanders too...
My favourite lens!
You forgot Sony Zeiss 55mm/1.8. How does that compare to 65mm/2?
Great review. There is also the exceptionally great Voigtländer 65 mm manual focus lens for e-mount, the Zeiss 55 f/1.8, the Zeiss Loxia 50 f/2.0, and the Samyang 50 and 75 mm, and I probably forgot one or two or more 😉

I've learned to like it but dang is it awkward

@@TheSpaceBrosShow Haha I also find 35mm is an awkward range. Wide but not wide enough.
love to see a comparison between the very good Samyang 75mm F1.8 V the Sigma 65mm
Just see Christopher Frost's review. He got a pretty good objective test for both
I'm glad they came out with these lenses cause I hate...and I mean I really hate...less expensive, wider aperture, sharp lenses.

Ask Christopher Frost to do that
65 mm is similar with crop medium format with 80 mm standard lens. Actually 65 mm very nice to use focal lenght once you get used to.
Funny - as a Nikon shooter I don't plan on buying either lens, but I enjoy watching Chris and Jordan so much that I will watch the video anyway!! Hands down the best gear review videos online.
Chris's E mount list left off the close-to-65mm 55mm Zeiss, which is pretty darn good.

Love that Sigma is making these smaller yet very sharp lenses. Bokeh on the 65 seemes pretty smooth too.
Perfect commentary on the Denver Broncos’ season - discarded.

Like your review. Talking about the Sony FE options you forgot probably the best available lens close to the 65. The Sony Zeiss 55 1.8.
Sony has a 55mm 1.8 that you didn't mention
It's pretty much Sony's best prime for that range. I use it 90% of the time and I own some nice GM lenses.
My GAW that FX6 footage looks amazing. Did you shoot this in S-Cinetone, or Log3 and then grade?
According to LensTip review that 65mm is one of the sharpest lenses for Sony E.

Not so excellent. I had two copies of the samyang 35mm 1.8 and both were pretty awful on the right frame - poor QC
What about Samyang/Rikenon 35mm f1.8 half price of this Sigma and Sony
Will you make a video on the new Sigma 105mm Macro? If so, I would really love an in-depth LoCA comparison!

Can the 65mm be an everyday lens and not just portrait shooting. Trying to decide now between the sigma Art 24-70 & Art 24-105 and now this 65 mm
