After our last visit to Life on Wheels I had to return and share with you Mitch's stunning secret collection of bicycles. We show you in detail and discuss the history of this stunning collection of high end road bikes. The collection includes, Colnago, Ti Raleigh, plus high end Reynolds 753 Raleigh team bikes and more!

I was one of the mechanics at Harry Hall Cycles in Cathedral Street, early 1980's.
The blue colour bike was a popular customer choice then.
Some very nice classic bikes in this collection.
Oh. The Gazelle AB frame/bike you have is from 1979-1982.
The AB was the retail sold version in Reynolds 531db, of the AA full pro race version.

We talk about that Union bike in the "Alimo Benotto sub brand"' on the Retrobike forum. It's a Japanese frameset built by Maki, dutch Benotto importer Alimo also used that frame with different stickers.

Where i live on the isle of wight,there is a guy who has over eighty vintage bikes! Some are 100 years old,colnago,trestina etc,serious money,most unrestored,he rides all of them,always a regular in the village!

In the late 60s most cyclists where I lived (South london) adored claud butler bicycles.Didn't know Geoffrey & Claud were brothers, great little insight into a collection of stunning vintage bikes.

WOW, what a fantastic collection with an old DQ as well. I just finished restoring my DQ 653 in Australia - nobody has a clue about its heritage. Great stuff 👏👏

Great collection. Every one a stunner. My personal favourite has to be the Mercian. I have a beautiful 1979 KoM - a real head turner - cost me a king's ransom to restore & build but it's worth every penny - mixed components; Gipiemme, Cinelli, Sugino, Suntour, Mafac, but it all looks and works perfectly. Highdays and holidays only.

Wow, just wow. Back to the days of the Kelloggs Start city centre crits, the Nissan Classic and the Milk Race. The days we tied our shoelaces and tightened our toestraps before we went racing. LB of sausages helmets, Isostar in our water bottles and not a care in the world.

That was a Friday night feast for sure Andy. I can remember seeing a CADEX carbon bike in the front window of the bike shop in Settle in the 1980's, that particular shop is no longer there but what a collection !
If any of them bikes rocked up outside the cafe on a group ride they would get so much attention because they are all works of art.

I Liked the oddball Dutch Union… I just fitted the exact same classic SR Custom bars and stem to my Raleigh 125 Anniversary, plus full Tricolor 8 speed groupset hubs and grey Mavic Open Pro rims…..

Started cycling again this last year for the first time in fifteen years, I found your channel just this evening, fabulous videos !
My bikes are from 1988 and 1989, they are a Columbus SL Paganini black and white diamond fade with C Record and Croce d'Aune with Mavic Open 4CD rims and a Columbus Aelle Ciocc in PDM colours with Chorus and Athena with Mavic MA40 rims and hubs. The only thing I have changed is to fit new Look pedals as the Look cleat sizes have changed. The bike shop in Penrith nearly fell over backwards when they saw my 52-42 chain rings coupled to a 13-18 six speed block !

I have a 78 Ti Raleigh full S/R sbdu 753
83 Raleigh Panasonic 532 full S/R
Mercian 753 special N/R and built up a Faggin columbus full S/R which involved binning a horrible tange fork and recommissioned straight blade fork from Faggin. Brooks titanium swallow saddle, leather bar covering and leather campagnolo brake hoods, looks stunning.

Hi Ken, I was the guy who actually painted the Dave Lloyd frame back in the 90s, it's still amazing to see these bikes still in circulation and original condition.. Even all this time later getting a nice comment like yours reminds me of how timeless they are.. Including all the others.. 😁

Your videos inspired me to restore my dad’s old Carlton, and a holdsworth off eBay. They were perfect project’s to get through the lockdown’s.

Me too, definitely a switch in the early 90’s with the bikes and tech. Material used and gear changing was a massive one. I’ve already started planning and buying for the Bianchi. Going to make it a personal ride this year I’m thinking 🤔
Brilliant. Was road racing from 1969,through 1970’s. Always rode Campag Record. In 1980’s we (bike shop) did a part exchange on a Peugeot branded Carbon tubed Alan with Campag C Record....my friend had the frame and I built groupset onto a Vitus 979....lovely. Did sell the Delta brakes and get Campag Record though. Such nice stuff. Still ride Campag Record 11 speed ....but do have a 1980 Record Groupset in a box!

The Battaglin must be an '88 earliest? Bearing in mind it has a "World Champion 1987" sticker on and the World's finsihed the season pretty much, couldn't have been built in '87, surely?

Great collection, the Master piu in that colour scheme is a personal favourite. But honestly, it's a shame you have so many great bikes that are just sitting in the dark. I still live by the 'keep what you ride' philosophy, so I sold a Master, a Merckx 10th anniversary, a Pinarello Treviso, a Tommasini... I kind of regret selling each one of those, but at the other hand, I still ride a Pinarello Asolo, Daccordi Griffe and am looking for a Tommasini. Each one of them has a special place in the garage (one even in the house) so I can look at them when not riding. Don't invest in more bikes but give them a place where they can shine, and sell some to people you know will either ride them or at least give them a place where they can shine.

Giant bikes & frames were first brought into the UK by Gitane Cycles based in Stubbins, Ramsbottom, near Bury, Lancashire. Circa mid 1970 - mid 1980's.
Bernard Hinault era.
Dave Lloyd Cycles was based in Bebbington on the Wirral for many years.

Love that collection, especially the Dutch bikes bring back lots of good memories. Union used to be a big brand in the Netherlands. They mainly sold city bikes and were not a big player in the racing bike market, that was in the eighties dominated by Gazelle, Batavus and Koga Myata in The Netherlands. Problems started for Union when they decided to bypass the traditional local bike shops and sell their bikes via big stores.It was nog a great succes and as far as I can remember it was the start of numerous takeovers. It is a shame it went downhill from there. The bike you own is a true celebration of what they were capable of.

@@BikeItUK Except they never built racing bikes. They were built to order in Italy for their racing team and a small handful was made available to the public. They are extremely rare.
Nice!!!! I have a Giant 980c that I converted to single speed. Was fun trying to find the right number of chain links to make it work with vertical drop outs. Rides really well but a flexy girl!!! The carbon aluminum bonded frames are beautiful bikes!!!

I love the colour of the Mercian but my heart sits with the Master Piu…Back in the day when I raced here in Calgary Canada I always wished for a Colnago but it was just out of my price range. I ended up getting sponsored and raced Zullo’s with Zeus components…still a great bike and I wish I still had it. Now I have picked up a Chesini X-Uno and restored it with full NOS SR and had Noah Rosen in Toronto paint it…it is everything I wanted in my Colnago and more…now I picked up a Daccordi Frecchia and am rebuilding it with period Chorus…it will become my rider. I love restoring bikes and love your channel. Cheers from Canad.

LOved this though made me a bit sad at the end. I had my Giant Cadex with full DA 7400 mix stolen just a few years ago from my garage in Berkhamsted. Exactly this model, was shocked when he pulled it out the container.
Put a lot of love into it.

Something to be said about steel...timeless, pragmatic and easy to obtain without scouring the earth for rare minerals and finally, easy to recycle. That said, the bikes here, represent the epitome of steel bike construction, built out of the strongest of steels, much like Excalibur, by hand and fire with the aid of instruments and implements, each a veritable piece of art. Thank goodness the arts are being continued by various custom builders around the world.
