    In this epic restoration video we get our hands on an actual Greg Lemond team bike, and get a message from the man himself Greg Lemond. With so much great cycling history this is one bike restoration not to miss. We look at the unforgettable 1989 Tour de France including the final time trail stage, and a personal inspirational mountain stage between two rivals. This Z-team bike with the matching cycling kit really has been a dream bike ride come true.
    The bike came in the workshop unridable and in need of a deep clean, care and attention. The bicycle is stripped down, cleaned, restored, polished and then rebuilt like new, before be taken out for a ride.
    I really had a lot of fun doing this restoration and I hope that the video inspires you to chase your childhood dream bike. This certainly was one of mine and brought back many childhood good memories.
    The video also show's maintenance and restoration help, tips and tricks. I do hope these video's help you in your own projects.

    Greg LeMond in my mind is #1 forever. A true Champion. The heart of a Lion. I had a 2001 Marin made by Belloto of Italy. It was a very innovative aluminium bike. The Paint was Phenomenal! It had some of the same color as this LeMond...it was Orange but it had yellow fading into green and blue too. Beautiful!!! Viva Lemond! The colors if a flame.

    Hey Andy, brilliant build. Greg is a hero of mine and back in his Renault-Elf days I actually got my haircut like Greg. I have a Pegoretti built Pinarello from 1993 with the next gen ergo levers and 8 speed. Brilliant bike. Now... at 7:36 you show the new BB installed and I dare say it's in backwards. The lock ring/adjuster cup goes on the non-drive side and the fixed cup on the drive (right) side.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thanks for watching and your comment nice to hear the story about your haircut. The bottom bracket came with the bike. I fully serviced it and reinstalled. The Italian frame on the drive side had an opposite thread like most Italian frames and the bottom bracket that came with it had a unusual locking ring on both sides of barrel. The manufacturer was “Royals” I think 🤔. Hope this explains a little better. Thanks again for your support

    • @johnandrews3568
      @johnandrews3568 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BikeItUK wow that is bizarre. Never seen a BB like that. Both my 83 pinarello and 93 Pinarello (Super record and C-Record ergo respectively) have Campy BBs and there is a fix cup on the drive side which made me think yours was backwards. But if that BB has a lock ring on both sides, and the ring doesn't impede the crank spider, well that's a new one on me. Weird quirks of pro team bikes I guess.

    The bikes of that time bring back so many memories. I had in 1979 /80 a steel Holdsworth frame. The rear cassette was 13to 18 tooth, the front rings were 54/42. Climbing any large hills was absolutely brutal.Down tube shifters, tubular tires. The bikes have certainly come a long way and are very enjoyable to ride today. But the bikes of that era are true classics.

      @@BikeItUK well few weeks ago I spoted one cheap and interesting road bike on andvertisment. I have MTB and ride it, but my old wish was to have an road bike. And this one reminds me on my fathers old bike he got in the factory in the 80s, that factory was producing bike cranksets it’s name was Unis from Yugoslavia. So, I got old german bike for very cheap, 40€, steel frame with lugs, weinmann brakes with dual levers and rims, maillard high flange hubs, shimano positron shifters, shimano chain and casette, SR Sakae Custom crankset 42/52, SR Sakae BB, Uno stem, Friko handlebar. So I stripped the bike to the frame, sent the frame to sandblasting and powdercoating in matte black. While I was waiting I was cleaned every single component the best I could and assemble it back, today I got new tires, tubes, seatpost, brake lines and housings, bar tape and pedals.
      I just need seatclamp screw to come and I can start building a bike. So tomorrow I am planing to start and record it, and mount the proper video in few days.
      Your videos give me some experiance and will to do it properly

    Stumbled upon your site and glad I did. Back in 1985 when I was 30 years old the cycling bug bit me........That year Lemond was neck and neck with Hinault but it wasnt quite his time. The following year it was and his epic win in 1986 inspired me beyond belief. An American actually winning the Tour, imagine that. Fast forward to 2022. I am retired, and have lots of time to ride and accomplish fitness goals I have been putting off for years.

    Love this! Had the great fortune of watching Lemond and the Badger during their time of conflict regarding team leadership during a couple of Coors Classic years. Epic stages in the Colorado Rockies. Still have my hallowed La Vie Claire T-shirt framed on my wall. Those were also the days of the famed 7-Eleven crew, with Hampsten, Kiefel, Phinney, Pierce and Alcala....epic Tour and Giro teams! Those were the good old days of the American rise to the top ranks of intl cycling.

    Great video, I also point to that 1989 TDF as the spark for my love of cycling. I remember watching that final time trial on ABC Wide World of Sports and when it was over I was so pumped, I jumped on my bike and rode for what seemed like hours. This bike sure does bring back some great memories.

      I'd already heard on the radio that he won but my eyes still welled up watching it. I do have to say that I prefer the previous Z paint scheme with navy blue on top, though.

    Wow, wow, wow! Such an amazing restoration & rebuild. I was at the TdF finish in '86 as a wide-eyed 15 year-old American novice bike racer. Loved watching the battle between Greg and Le Blaireau. So many memories!

    Hell yeah...'Merca!!! LeMond was a beast! Had circumstances been different, IE: him being a young and naive "team player" and ya know, getting shot, he would easily have had 5 tour wins, probably more. And people would be arguing who was the greatest of all time him or Merckx. Unfortunately life has a bad habit of getting in the way and as a result LeMond didn't come anywhere near his potential greatness. But the man changed cycling and saved it twice, in the 80's by bringing the sport into the present and again with the Armstrong crap. Thank God for Greg LeMond. He may be criminally underrated and underappreciated but he's hands the down the most humble and nicest guy to win the tour and he'll always be my favorite cyclist.He's also the reason I'll never own a Trek, But that's neither here or there. Anyways. Awesome video, per usual.

    I have a LeMond with the same paint from the same era. It's the Tourmalet model. Not sure what tubing because it has a "Tour de France" sticker where the tubing label would be, but lugged tubes, Italian-threaded bottom bracket. I rebuilt it with Shimano 600 vintage components (mostly). So happy to have a pre-Trek LeMond.
    I, too, have a Team Z jersey from that era (made by Tommaso). Bought it when he was still on the team, so 1990 or 91. And yes, he was one of the main reasons I got into cycling as well.
