Would you give up your secrets if you could mass produce a very valuable mushroom? If you say yes I think you are lying and are just mad someone didn't do the work for you so you can profit.

Thanks for the information. Morels were a family activity when I was a kid also. On our property here in Kansas we have alot some years, some years none.
About the moss at the end of the video... I live in southern indiana with 46 acres of wooded forest in my backyard. Right near my back porch I have a thicket of spruce trees with a thick moss on the ground almost year-round. The moss is up to 2 or 3inches thick in some places... I've picked some 8 inch morels growing out of that moss before! It's consistently one of my biggest honey holes
Same Here I Have 2 Maple Trees That Have Moss Growing Around Them thick and It's About 8 Foot up On The Tree Trunk on It's East Side It Just completely covered in Moss that's really thick over the last four years I have found many morels growing around that whole area also have apple and pear trees in my yard same way they just do not have as much moss on them

Great video! I am starting in the world of home-grown mushrooms. In my case I am using lion's mane as my first crop. Learned a lot from your video, you made me set my own goal of becoming at least half as knowledgeable on lion's mane. Don't forget to give us an update once spring comes!
I have done the morel slurry and had great success with it. I dumped my slurry around an old Apple Tree on my property. the tree was about dead when I started my project. The health of the tree has improved because of the symbiotic relationship with a morel mushroom. I have harvested a handful of morels from my project. I have also dumped moral salary around my brother's backyard and he lives in the city. There used to be an apple tree but the city cut down the tree and it has been gone for a year but it's still produced morals. I started in spring 2018, I got my first harvest in 2019, I'm hoping in 2020 my harvest will be larger. Every year I select a few morels to turn back into salary and dump it in the areas I know produce morels.
Hello, Thank you for "sharing what you learned" as you say. I did some of your experiments at home in France but only indoors. I've managed to get some pretty nice sclerotia in my jars but then...nothing happens...(I mean my goal is not getting sclerotia:-) ) I did manage too to get some kind of fruits (quite small) I tried again once more but I couldn't get back to fruits.... Then I've stopped my experiment. I can share some pics with you if you want. It takes a lot of time to do these experiments and more often with bad surprises than with good (ex contamination means start it all again...) Well happy to see that I'm not the only one with that "stunning passion" and I hope I will find time and energy to get back to further experiment. thank you again :-)
Groovy experiment. Now I don't know for certain on what I'm going to tell you. Only that I know it worked for me. I moved to Pennsylvania from Michigan and I had no spot to hunt morels for myself. So one doing I went back to Michigan and found early morels. I then took those back to Pennsylvania and then transplanted best I could. I did this around elm trees. But be for I did this I took some elm logs and buried them 4-5-6 inches deep and put 2 dozen morels in my bed above the buried elm logs. I did this beside live elms. I then took some binding wire and put toward the base of the live elms around the bed I made and tightened around the dads of live elms. After that I let nature take its course. Next spring I had around 100-150 morels. I picked more than 3/4. Left the rest. Also I always seed the area around. By this I mean pulling the dead leaves and stuff on ground to expose dirt I then drop the motel or tap it on the ground to speak the spores. Next spring thousands of morels. Each year I find more and more.
Tightening the wire around the base of the other elm trees super tight I think stresses the elm and helps causes the roots of the live elm banded with wire to release the morels spores or help what spore already there to grow.

Across Iowa this spring we have found morels in peoples yards. Spread all around in the open. Not clustered together nor were they close to woods. I harvested 24 from my front yard. Apparently the 2019 derecho had spread them all over. I planted several of the small ones in a moist shaded area hoping maybe next year they will return. Very strange the behavior of these little things

Your mycelium needs more air flow, I find most of mine here in eastern Oregon right on the plateau of a ridge at tree lines= constantly changing air currents. Your bed is in a sump which traps air pockets
I put lease desirable ones and rinse water in my bark patches two years ago, no maintenance had like 2 doz! Planted 10x as much years, should be up soon!
The secret to growing morels is to put used coffee grounds in the soil. Coffee grounds are loaded with nitrogen. Also sprinkle in some wood ash. Good luck! 🍀👍🏼
AntCare if I remember right, which I probably dont. You want to use fresh grounds because the hot water used to make coffee kills all the bacteria and is perfect for plant food unless you let it sit out and get nasty. Gotta use semi fresh.
Humidity, fresh air exchange, and evaporation off of a fully colonized substrate (like via a constantly damp casing layer) is the key to pinning. Pinning requires at least 90% humidity and if anything goes awry, they will abort.

I like your style of doing it! I'm up in the Napa valley where the Tubs fire went through a months ago and destroyed most of the houses on our road. Just of today I'm growing morel mycelium for a slurry, taking advantage of the natural burned forest and fields. My goal is to grow them indoor. Thinking outside the box to challenge the most difficult task, indoor morel!

Morel mushrooms have been grown commercially in China for several years. It's grown in soil. The key is that there are two types of Morel. One is associated with trees and the other is not. It's the second type that can be grown in soil.
Ask Paul Stamets about growing morels. It was something that he wrote in one of his books that gave Ower the idea on how to grow morels. Attended one of Stamets seminars in the early 90's, he still hadn't figured out what it was. Stamets books are still in print so maybe you can use them to figure it out too.
I have to wonder if using something like a smoker for beekeeping and then spreading the ashes would help? Also thinking of where they come from, usually in forests, I have to wonder if lower quality soil would be better?
Your on a good path with the moss. Also make them want to grow, in other words treat them like crap once the mycelium takes. The Forrest is tuff mimic home.
I tried a kit, gave up on it, and dumped out the wine barrel I was experimenting in. Three years later I just picked three mature morels where I dumped it out. I wish I could figure out how to do it consistently!
I never knew it was so difficult to grow morels. I feel guilty for just buying them off the shelves and enjoying them so much, all the while taking the cultivation of it for granted. Hope you've gotten further with your experiment.
So what was the result? Any fruiting bodies? It does seem like fall would have a longer period of appropriate temperatures but I only ever find Morels in the spring in the midwest.
I have the same very same overwhelming passion. The lure of and difficulty of it inspires me. You just go girl. Hell watch your own video and take notes, i know it has given me new ideas. I don't believe their is a secret to Morels at all. Otherwise the entire world would have found out by now! ;)
nice!! goodluck, my current climate isn't conducive to morels. Interesting though, I have interest too. My foots in the door with cultivation and I just cloned some oyster myc to agar from the woods. I miss morels though, I'm from missouri originally. Goodluck again! It's adictive.
I think morels prefer elm trees because they may have more vitamins and minerals than some other types of trees. I made a slurry the day before yesterday with morel bits, flour, sawdust, and organic molasses and salt, and let that sit for 24 hours - I didn't have a bubbler, so every few hours, I used a whisk to infuse oxygen into the mix. I thinned it down and watered several shady areas in my yard. I will try to find some elm wood, but I may also try to wet some moringa powder, because that is really loaded with vitamins and minerals and water them with that just to see if that may help.
Dang u planted that bed 2 days after my birthday. I know it’s hot here in august that’s when the outdoor mushrooms 🍄 fruit here in SC. I just inoculated my first 2 jars with yellow Morel a week ago. Just checked on them tonight and they both have mycelium starting. Any advice would be very beneficial and very very grateful and much appreciated. Thank you in advance. I’m very dedicated into fruiting these yellow morels indoors 😊
Experiment with soil ph? Supposedly they grow near old apple orchards. It must be something in the soil. It also must be temperature related since they always come up in the spring time at the same time the dogwood trees are blooming. I wonder if the indoor growers mimic spring conditions with temperatures and more daylight hours?
The pinning begins when the mycellium depletes nutrients and the colony becomes desperate. Therefore, pinning is a survival response. The mushroom structure itself is how the colony sends new genetics out to colonize a new nutrient rich environment. Morels are very hardy(the mycellium). Hint: The reason slurries work better vs indoor microenviroments is because nature encourages the survival response, controlled environments are just that controlled and do not encourage survival response.
There are a few things worth trying select the best type - there are lots available. grow them in the best environment - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and can be placed outdoors (I discovered these and why they work from Gregs Mushroom Grower site )
Not sure if morchella is the same, but oysters and cubensis pin when the mycelium has a good mass and hold on the substrate medium and when humidity & temps drop. Longer exposure to light is a pinning trigger after mycelial density and then humidity/temp change. It doesn't have to use up all the nutes, though it might be a secondary trigger if levels drop.
When I clean wild morels I throw the scraps and wash water around a elm tree on my property and sure enough after only 1 year I found a morel growing there. It was only one but it's a start
You might have good mycelium under there, they start to crop up when the pH rises -- throw some ashes from a fire near that area, morels like to pop up after fires
I have a few morels growing on my forested acres here and I let them just grow and die in hopes that they will spread more. I am guessing that may not be helpful. About five miles away from me, my sister found a whole patch of them just behind her restaurant she's running. It looked like a smurf village there just two days ago. None are coming up here by me, but I am about 500 feet higher in elevation and the trees are not even bloomed out like they are by her. Will take time.
I have done well outdoors making the slurry I’ve made some real nice patches that have lasted years if I don’t pick every mushroom in patch I have experienced that taking everything and it kills the patch ... but indoors is what I want !
I read the patent years ago and maybe i dont get it but it seems you need to go from a nutrient rich substrate to a non nutrient rich substrate ? and im guessing you have to make that top non nutrient rich substrate like a after fire PH ?
I used to cherish Morel Mushrooms until I discovered Lion's Mane Mushrooms. Not only are they a delicacies but they're extremely powerful nootropic medicine. It's the BEST.
Have you tried to bring the mycelium to an almost freezing temp? I thought about taking a jar and putting in the freezer for a day then place into fruit.... hmm
I have friends who have successfully grown these and they swear by elm. They say a dead elm is magic. You might try growing some elm saplings in the bed and cutting them to kill them at about 2 yrs. They'll have lots of roots for the mushrooms to latch on to. Also, elm chips would make nice bedding.
try this get some saw dust wood chips alot if growing them in ground stick wood in ground where you want to grow , is best to do in the fall late summer , come spring they will pop up if you do not have spores then go pick some mushroom soak them in water distilled do not use tap water , after soaking your years harvest pour that water in spot where all your wood chips are good luck
Any soil that moss can grow in and or on is the appropriate ph, and is also nutrient empty basically. Consider the fact that strawberries that are wild also grow in the same soil perfectly, even with the fallen Leaves etc I'm in Texas in the south and have tested this. The only way for me to grow strawberries is to grow them in nutrient empty soil or sand, but add enough mycelium grown own fallen fall leaves I collect and leave in a bag. After I collect the mycelium and place a colony in the soil with the strawberries they are impossible to kill. I also add composted wood chips, a green waste mix I get for free from the local recycling center plus my own homemade compost mixed with animal manure.
I just bought enough Morel spore to mix 20 gallons of water. They grow naturally here in the Pacific Northwest but I though it might be fun to grow some.
Throw a morel on your dashboard and watch the spore print form. Decades of picking brought us to thro them on the dash sometimes and well we learned that was all you need. Love your video.

You forgot wood ash. It raises PH and lowers acidity. These mushrooms love to pop out after forest fires. Food for thought [no pun intended]

what helps grow morels is using wood ash on the beds which simulates a forest fire and they should pop up after that. hope it helps.

That's what I did, went hunting I got about 5 pounds and used 1 pound to spread around my yard and it worked especially around my garden area.

Morel mushrooms have been grown commercially in China for several years. It's grown in soil. The key is that there are two types of Morel. One is associated with trees and the other is not. It's the second type that can be grown in soil.

Ask Paul Stamets about growing morels. It was something that he wrote in one of his books that gave Ower the idea on how to grow morels. Attended one of Stamets seminars in the early 90's, he still hadn't figured out what it was. Stamets books are still in print so maybe you can use them to figure it out too.

Your on a good path with the moss. Also make them want to grow, in other words treat them like crap once the mycelium takes. The Forrest is tuff mimic home.
I tried a kit, gave up on it, and dumped out the wine barrel I was experimenting in. Three years later I just picked three mature morels where I dumped it out. I wish I could figure out how to do it consistently!

I never knew it was so difficult to grow morels. I feel guilty for just buying them off the shelves and enjoying them so much, all the while taking the cultivation of it for granted. Hope you've gotten further with your experiment.

So what was the result? Any fruiting bodies? It does seem like fall would have a longer period of appropriate temperatures but I only ever find Morels in the spring in the midwest.

nice!! goodluck, my current climate isn't conducive to morels. Interesting though, I have interest too. My foots in the door with cultivation and I just cloned some oyster myc to agar from the woods. I miss morels though, I'm from missouri originally. Goodluck again! It's adictive.
I think morels prefer elm trees because they may have more vitamins and minerals than some other types of trees. I made a slurry the day before yesterday with morel bits, flour, sawdust, and organic molasses and salt, and let that sit for 24 hours - I didn't have a bubbler, so every few hours, I used a whisk to infuse oxygen into the mix. I thinned it down and watered several shady areas in my yard. I will try to find some elm wood, but I may also try to wet some moringa powder, because that is really loaded with vitamins and minerals and water them with that just to see if that may help.
Did it work? Any anecdotal evidence?

Dang u planted that bed 2 days after my birthday. I know it’s hot here in august that’s when the outdoor mushrooms 🍄 fruit here in SC. I just inoculated my first 2 jars with yellow Morel a week ago. Just checked on them tonight and they both have mycelium starting. Any advice would be very beneficial and very very grateful and much appreciated. Thank you in advance. Supposedly they grow near old apple orchards. It must be something in the soil. It also must be temperature related since they always come up in the spring time at the same time the dogwood trees are blooming. I wonder if the indoor growers mimic spring conditions with temperatures and more daylight hours?
The pinning begins when the mycellium depletes nutrients and the colony becomes desperate. Therefore, pinning is a survival response. The mushroom structure itself is how the colony sends new genetics out to colonize a new nutrient rich environment.
Morels are very hardy(the mycellium). Hint: The reason slurries work better vs indoor microenviroments is because nature encourages the survival response, controlled environments are just that controlled and do not encourage survival response.

There are a few things worth trying
select the best type - there are lots available.
grow them in the best environment - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and can be placed outdoors
(I discovered these and why they work from Gregs Mushroom Grower site )
Not sure if morchella is the same, but oysters and cubensis pin when the mycelium has a good mass and hold on the substrate medium and when humidity & temps drop. Longer exposure to light is a pinning trigger after mycelial density and then humidity/temp change. It doesn't have to use up all the nutes, though it might be a secondary trigger if levels drop.
So to order the spores and spread them out in the woods is best?

That would probably depend on if the dried mushrooms still had their spores on them when you tried to get the mycellium to grow.

When I clean wild morels I throw the scraps and wash water around a elm tree on my property and sure enough after only 1 year I found a morel growing there. It was only one but it's a start
You might have good mycelium under there, they start to crop up when the pH rises -- throw some ashes from a fire near that area, morels like to pop up after fires
I have a few morels growing on my forested acres here and I let them just grow and die in hopes that they will spread more. I am guessing that may not be helpful. About five miles away from me, my sister found a whole patch of them just behind her restaurant she's running. It looked like a smurf village there just two days ago. None are coming up here by me, but I am about 500 feet higher in elevation and the trees are not even bloomed out like they are by her. Will take time.
I have done well outdoors making the slurry I’ve made some real nice patches that have lasted years if I don’t pick every mushroom in patch I have experienced that taking everything and it kills the patch ... but indoors is what I want !

I read the patent years ago and maybe i dont get it but it seems you need to go from a nutrient rich substrate to a non nutrient rich substrate ? and im guessing you have to make that top non nutrient rich substrate like a after fire PH ?
I used to cherish Morel Mushrooms until I discovered Lion's Mane Mushrooms. Not only are they a delicacies but they're extremely powerful nootropic medicine. It's the BEST.
Fishy tasting though. Morels are much more pleasant in my opinion. But lions mane can be good too.

Have you tried to bring the mycelium to an almost freezing temp? I thought about taking a jar and putting in the freezer for a day then place into fruit.... hmm
I have friends who have successfully grown these and they swear by elm. They say a dead elm is magic. You might try growing some elm saplings in the bed and cutting them to kill them at about 2 yrs. They'll have lots of roots for the mushrooms to latch on to. Also, elm chips would make nice bedding.
try this get some saw dust wood chips alot if growing them in ground stick wood in ground where you want to grow , is best to do in the fall late summer , come spring they will pop up if you do not have spores then go pick some mushroom soak them in water distilled do not use tap water , after soaking your years harvest pour that water in spot where all your wood chips are good luck
Any soil that moss can grow in and or on is the appropriate ph, and is also nutrient empty basically. Consider the fact that strawberries that are wild also grow in the same soil perfectly, even with the fallen Leaves etc
I'm in Texas in the south and have tested this. The only way for me to grow strawberries is to grow them in nutrient empty soil or sand, but add enough mycelium grown own fallen fall leaves I collect and leave in a bag. After I collect the mycelium and place a colony in the soil with the strawberries they are impossible to kill. I also add composted wood chips, a green waste mix I get for free from the local recycling center plus my own homemade compost mixed with animal manure.
Oh and I add wood ash as well
I just bought enough Morel spore to mix 20 gallons of water. They grow naturally here in the Pacific Northwest but I though it might be fun to grow some.
