    I'll have to give this a shot! Got grain spawn bags with black morels and true morels just about fully colonized and ready to go into the main substrate. So far I have learned that mycelium grows really well in rye berry grain bags and for whatever reason it does NOT like potato dextrose agar at all. I usually put my liquid culture/spores on agar and then inoculate by dropping agar into the grain spawn, but it just wouldn't grow on the PDA at all. I thought I was sold junk liquid culture because everything else grows on it just fine. Injected the liquid culture straight into the rye berry spawn bags and bam...took off growing like crazy!

      @@KEPSAGAMER Absolutely disastrous... 😂
      Mind you, I am not following this video 100%...I am combining several successful experiments, information from cultivating other mushrooms, and my knowledge from keeping reptiles and amphibians in terrariums using bioactive substrate systems.
      The rye berry spawn bags fully colonized beautifully. The biggest failure of this video is the mixture of the substrate. If you follow their proportions, the substrate is basically hardwood shavings with a little bit of other stuff sprinkled throughout. I ended up mixing in far more peat moss and potting soil to get something that resembles soil.
      I used roughly 2" of perlite under my mixture to ensure the soil is well drained but leaving the lids on my tubs almost instantly made conditions perfect for mold growth. I don't usually sterilize my substrates since fully colonized grain spawn isn't as susceptible to mold as early stages of mycelium growth. But this was going to destroy everything.
      Misted everything with 3% hydrogen peroxide to kill off the mold growth (which surprisingly worked) and then left the lids off my tubs. Misting 2x daily with a garden sprayer to keep it from drying out. I planted grass seed in with the grain spawn as well after reading articles about how grass somehow has a symbiotic relationship with morels. That was all roughly 3-4 days ago and I have a blade of grass growing so all hope is not yet lost.
      I also have heating pads with thermostats setup so after the refrigeration cycle I can control the soil temperatures and I have a mister system with a hygrostat so I will be able to control the rain cycles. Plus a UV light to control the light cycles. Will see if it works...but based on my luck so far, success may be difficult.

      @@blackshirej it seems the innoculation process is a solid but the issue is usually in the tub. I was questioning these soil instructions as they sounded off compared to other sorts of mushrooms. As for the livery, the grass also is a confirmation that the soil is proper. Grass should be super easily prosperous in most environments

    What If you bought like 15-20 cheap tree saplings, put them in a greenhouse with adequate conditons, and spread Morrell slurry throughout the soil inside the tubs holding the saplings? This would give the mushroom a symbiote so there's the needed connection?

    • @MushroomSite
      @MushroomSite  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! You could totally give growing mushrooms and trees together in a greenhouse a try with the method you mentioned. Just keep in mind, different types of trees and mushrooms have different needs and it might be tricky to find a combo that works. And don't forget, keeping an eye on the greenhouse conditions like temperature, humidity, and light is key for both the mushrooms and trees to thrive. Let us know how it goes!

      There was a guy who made a business of selling inoculated seedlings and did quite well , until the Emerald Ash Borer infestation shut down his ability to sell the seedlings and ship them across state lines .
      Once a stand was established , stimulation of morel fruiting was accomplished by traumatizing the trees , by burning or cutting them down .
      Since morels often fruit heavily following forest fires , several factors may be at play .
      A direct response to some " distress " signal in some form from the trees , a sudden increase in soil PH from the ash ( chiefly Potassium carbonate ) , an increase in light levels and soil temperatures , some combination ,, no one is exactly sure .
      Be fun to try and narrow it down , if I ever have a suitable place to set up a proper lab , that is .
      Yes , you can do it in your kitchen , but , that incurs a high risk of contamination of the spawn , even using otherwise sterile technique .
      You really need a clean lab to reduce the possibility of that , especially for a commercial or scientific research operation .
      You can get by at home with a pressure cooker and an alcohol lamp , but most would be astounded at how much mold is present in seemingly immaculate homes . So expect to lose a few batches doing things in an informal setting . Mold is insidious and ubiquitous , as are bacteria , which can also ruin your efforts .
