I don't like coloured pencils as a rule but you have changed my mind. I would usually skip over the coloured pencil videos as I work in Acrylics and Oils, but now I have started to actually enjoy them and think about having a go myself. Thank you for broadening my mind.
Wow! Spot. On. Everything you say here, I've learned the hard way, through experience, so it's wonderful for folks exploring this medium. Listen to Lisa! You did provide more knowledge (as you always seem to do!), regarding blotchy skin tones, and using the thinner sparingly on heavily-layered portions of work. Yes! Hallelujah! This, it turns out, has been my problem all along... with rendering flesh and fur alike. Can't thank you enough, Miss Lisa.
Thanks for a wonderful tutorial. It was very helpful for learning how to do skin! I love how you manage to give it the same feel as an oil painting! I think this is my favourite of your portraits, it's absolutely stunning work! And very cute!

I have the polychromos 60-set and now I just had to buy the luminance 20 set, just to get those light colors on top (on a tin for smart storage) for my lighter parts of drawings. :D I've spent way too much money for my art supplies not having the time to actually use them. I hope I do have time in the future to make more art since I got the supplies for every medium I want to try. Awesome work ass always! That is always so mind blowing to see how color tones changes after the surround is colored. The arm in shadow looked at first too grey and colorless but after you put the blue dress and other arm, the shadow arm just pops out in to the colors. I always struggle with those things, but photoshop color picker helps a lot to evaluate the right color.
Very nice work. I always love how you blend your skin tones so beautifully. I don't know if you have a demonstration on how to the draw the hair? I've always have had difficultly drawing hair..would love it if you had a slowed down version of it.
Hey, Lisa, can you get a video out about using the masking fluid, demonstrating how you apply it and all? Your's always looks so neat and flat, like on this picture. I've tried it a couple of times and I can't get it on smoothly. I have a tool with a silicon tip on it and a synthetic brush as well, but it dries so fast, it is still hard to get it applied properly, even with constantly dipping my tool in water between every dip and application to clean the stuff off so it doesn't build up. She is beautiful, by the way. Nice job! Thanks for the video! =D
Since you like the Polychromos pencils so much, I wondered if you have ever tried the Albrecht Durer line by Faber Castell. They have the same color palette with the Polychromos, but especially the white pencil is so much creamier and I can get so much more detail with it. If you have tried them out, I would love to hear your opinion in comparison with the Polychromos pencils.
Hey Lisa, I just wanted to say I absolutely love your artwork and I repeatedly binge watch all of your videos! I never even thought of using paint thinner before! See, I've always liked the look of paintings, but I hate actually painting, I always preferred dry mediums, and I thought this was an absolutely fantastic solution to that because I can use the dry medium I like, but the paint thinner makes it almost look like a painting!! Plus I love listening to you talk, you talk fast and what you say always makes sense and you seem really personable and that's fantastic because I find so many really great artists can sometimes sound..a little snobby or they talk so slow it's kinda hard to pay attention. lol This might be a bit of an odd request but do you think maybe in the future you could do some sort of video on colored lighting with colored pencils? Like a red light on a surface/skin sort of thing? Whenever I try it just kinda looks like I colored the skin/thing whatever color the light was supposed to be and less like it's glowing and reflecting on it. Or when I try drawing little colored orbs of light, they never really seem like they're glowing...just more like balls of color. (If that all made sense) lol :)
I am a big fan I would Love if you would do another video on how how to draw hair in graphite Going into greater detail and again I am a big fan of your art
in this video you say whenever you want an opaque, you will always switch over to your luminance pencils. is this true? does this mean that you do not do finished pieces with the polychromos? I am trying to figure out if i want to go with prismacolors or polychromos. would I need or want the luminance or prismacolors if i want to go opaque if i bought the polychromos?
I can never get my odorless mineral spirits to blend the pencils like that, especially when I try using a brush. Do you have any tips or a video I could check out? :) Thanks so much in advance!
Hi, do you have any suggestion on how to choose the right skin tone?? I'm really having a hard time to pick what color to use or blend for the skin tone.
what brand of paint thinner could you recommend if one doesn't have access to the monaa Lisa one? nowhere where I am situated has that brand of paint thinner AND the people that work in the art supplies store here don't even know what the Mona Lisa paint thinner is? they also told me that theyve never heard of using thinner as a means to blend pencil lol, so ive given up on asking them for advice because they dont have any. so I don't know which one to buy. help me please
Lisa, this was great to watch it all come together. Was this from a general reference photo, or did you do this as a commissioned portrait? This came out so great. Thanks,
you are really phenomenal... May I ask....do you free draw every thing onto your paper...or do you trace a picture onto your paper/ I did not understand what you were explaining about the 10% of this color 50% of that 75% of this...etc the amount of space that color takes up...or the amount of heaviness of the layering of a color.?????? BTW I would be very pround if I could do half as good as the pic you showed from the past!!
Lana J Sometimes I trace, sometimes I freehand. I do not, as a general rule, tell people which method I used on each piece because it proves that no one can ever tell the difference. The percentages are what the pencil is named by Luminance :D
I'm still working on my first colored pencil drawing and still struggling a lot with the skin tone. I feel like I've used a lot more layers than you, but accomplished a lot less. I'm using prismacolors and starting to get wax bloom. How do you handle that or mistakes? What's your opinion on keeping the pencil sharp (since I notice a lot of your pencils here aren't)? Do you only sharpen them for detail work/line drawing?
My guess is tracing paper....If not, it should work just fine-any cheap brand or any u may already have. Wax paper would work also-u may have some of that in the kitchen. Happy drawing!
Carol Schultz The name of the Color pencils. French Gray 10% French Gray 30% French Gray 100%. It's like the same color but with different color saturation. 10% being the lightest and 100% being darker. Check the description box under materials.
What beautiful color pencils u are using. I'm looking for a medium and small battery eraser. I have a Derwent eraser. Can you tell me a number of TomBow eraser u use? Where do you get this by mail? Thanks so much.
Lisa, do you ever look at your art and see it as being not as good as others may say it is? For example, the same way we don't like the way we look in photographs but others may say we look amazing? I'm just wondering if I'm too critical of my own work...?
sarahjgut I won't be much help here...I love them both! If you're doing portraits, the luminance I think is better for the smooth skin, but then the polychromos are great for the super fine detail in the eyes and hair.
hey brilliant video again! quick question though... when i color with my polychromos, i did one piece that took around 4 hours, and i felt that i used alot of pencil. i had to sharpen a lot of pencil away. is this normal? do they not last long? or am i doing something wrong? thank you.
Is the paint thinner for smearing the wax in the pencils? Is it the same as turpentine? (Or, will turn work the same?) I'm a professional artist as well and that technique blew my mind. Amazing. Thanks for your great videos!!
Ashley Vanstone The paint thinner is essentially desolving the pigment into the paper. Turpentine is considered to be much more toxic and it has a much harsher odor. Most colored pencil artists use an odorless mineral spirit instead (like the mona lisa odorless paint thinner). I've never used turpentine on anything to be honest, so I can't compare the results with colored pencil. :)
***** It would completely depend on the portrait. There are too many factors to have that be a one size fits all sort of thing. The lighting is really the biggest element in that.
I notice in all your videos you have an outline of the subjects face and features already on the canvas. But I haven't watched any of your full length videos so I don't know. Do you use the tracing/charcoal method or do you draw it by yourself? Like you would by drawing someone real in front of you. Would be good to see a video right from the start in your tutorials, to me you are skipping the hardest part which is getting the likeness
First I would like to say your amazing! 👏👏👏👏👏. Next where can u buy paint thinner? Walmart? Michaels? Hobby lobby? Online? Lastly, can u use paint thinner with crayola colored pencils? And have u tried it?

Keely Bolen When completing portraits of actual people (vs just drawing a person that doesn't exist), it's important to pay attention to your reference photo. how does the paint thinner work with prismacolor colored pencils? i know they tend to have a bit more wax in them.

What brand name are those colored wooden pens
is there anyway I could achieve this look without a paint thinner? I don't wanna risk the chance of getting it since it is toxic
I never use it and I think it turns out just as fine without it just might take longer
Try burnishing, but I’ve also used nail polish remover and oil (tea tree) and those seemed to work well in small amounts.
