This was helpful , I finished my first color pencil portrait the other day .. After watching this video , I see 2 of the mistakes I made and why I am not happy with the final result ....... So I will be starting this drawing over , and using some of your tips to help make it more like the photo I was looking at .... Thanks for the tips .......
A little tip for the last one. When you drew the sketch or outline for a picture, just leave it and go back to it the next day. It helped me a lot in noticeing quite some mistakes and errors I made and hence got a better result when I finished the drawing. :)
Or you could just turn it round and hold it up to a light, just like how you would use ”Flip canvas horizontally” in Adobe Photoshop to see your mistakes.
The jazz hands really make me want to go for that subscribe button. But since I'm already subscribed I'm left with this feeling of unfulfilled compulsion. btw, Great video. Any one of these points can save a person days of frustration.
Thank you for this video :) It has the perfect timing for me, because I got Polychromos for Christmas and I don't know that much about using colored pencils. This video had some great tips and advices 👍🏻
Lachri Fine Art I am so surprised, I have been coloured pencil for only 1 year, I have been an oil painter for many years. People find it amazing that they don't realize that it takes many many layer to achieve the proper amount of pigment to the substrate. Intuitively I realized that with more and more layers, without pressing too hard gives you the proper texture and feel that you really want.
And it still looks really good! Not as artistic as the finished result, but it's a pretty good rendition of a little brown bird in subdued lighting. LBBs are kind of in the business of not being easily noticeable...
You are changing the way i draw and its amazing!!! Blending with the odorless mineral solvant is life changing, all these years of hating colored pencils. I have a new found love thanks!!!
I used to be great at colored pencil but as of lately, I've been painting and haven't used colored pencils in a long time. I tried to pick it back up and I'm not as good as I used to be. This video really did help, sort of a reminder/reality check. Thank you so much! 🖤

best tip for me, thinking it's done when it's not. I think I just get tired. Thanks for the affirmation that colored pencil work takes time, time, time.
I had no idea how versatile colored pencils were. i"m so happy I have a huge collection of all kinds. I can't wait to start experiementing. I have the rest of my life to keep learning and I intend to. Thank you for opening my eyes to a whole new world!

I have subscribed to your channel. You sound like a great teacher who I could learn from. I will check out your other videos and see what I see. Beautiful work.
This is so interesting! Thanks for the tips. As a watercolor artist in my earlier years, I was told to not put in so much detail and stop sooner than later or the painting will look contrived and over worked. Loose, slap happy stuff you know. As a person who loves detail, my final mentor and teacher Master Artist Susan Harrison-Tustain, helped me know its OK to love detail in watercolor! She is the same. This is what excites some of us. Thanks again!

I ran across this video at random but you are making me want to do real art! You do beautiful work and are an excellent teacher! I literally just pulled out a 30 year old set of prismacolor pencils for a project. so sad about the quality control. thank you for the thorough review and I can tell the difference in your two pieces.
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this video! I've been have layering issues and now I know why. This video has definitely help a lot with my the current drawing I'm working on. Thank you!
Lisa, I have learned so much from you. I can't thank you enough for all your tips and bit of knowledge. It has helped me so much. Each animal portrait I do is a little better thanks to you.
Lisa you're an angel. Thank you for this video! For me, #5 has been the most important to learn, and I'm so much happier that I'm doing it now. It really helps if you're prepared to have to take a long time in the first place. Then before you know it you're done haha
Great video Lisa. I had to learn a lot of these the hard way. Especially the mineral spirits. I would use to much as first and wouldn't have a lot of layers down.
literally... 5 minutes ago...finished a small study on smooth Bristol and couldn't get many layers. Didn't know that a paper could be too smooth. Thanks Lisa
Thank you so much Lisa! I made a mistake of point #7 and I had to start my illustration over again, there wasn't enough detail, and it looked bad. So I opted to do it again.🤦🏻♀️
I paint with oils but currently have no well ventilated area to work. And since I live in Alaska I cant open windows this time of year. Soooo, was seriously thinking of purchasing the polychromos colored pencils. Thank you for the inspirations. My mother is sad I haven't made a picture for her in a while.
I don't use white as a drawing surface. . .I don't layer very much, as I like a slightly less smooth finish to my drawings. . .I usually layer the most when I'm combining colors to achieve a particular shade. . .I try to let the color of my drawing surface assist in the blending as I transition from darker to lighter tones. . .I also never work on a smooth drawing surface. . .In this way I achieve just a bit rougher but still finished look, using more of a feathered transition than a smooth burnished look. . .For this reason I never use any "spirits" to assist in blending. . .Just my preference. . .Your work is exceptional and I admire your results!
I just started with colored pencils but I’ve been using graphite pencils for awhile and there’s no way ill make these mistakes. I’ve made them before when I was starting to work seriously on my art but I learned from them. One thing I do want to start comprehending is that not every time I pick up my pencil that I’m going to make a masterpiece, because I would be devestated more than happy all the time.
What you mentioned in this video I have learned that over time. It all adds up. I have gone back over a picture and improved the look. You should try ampersand pastel boards a little different but good tooth.
I love working with graphite pencils to create portraits. I have tried to use color pencils in the past but I didn't have much success because I didn't understand how to use them correctly. {Who knew that such beautiful art could be made with color pencils and paint thinner!} You have inspired me. Please don't change a thing, I love how you teach a lot in a single video!
I really agree with you that if an artist is getting the results they want, then it's not a mistake. It's all about your personal goals and techniques you use to get there. 👍
I think every artist could know draw realistic at first, and then he can starts doing mistakes in his art:D....even when someone knows high techniques, he can discover even more intresting mistakes in his art. Ur videos are great to watch, enjoyable and full of good informations
Wow! Thank you so much for this! Ive been drawing graphite portraits for a while now, but I want to start getting into colouring and using colour pencils... You're so amazing! I hope I get like you! My whole thing is that there is so much open space, where to start? And when you look at a reference picture, how do you pick a whole bunch of colours and know they're right? Subscribed!
I totally see what you mean by the pencil needing to be sharp to get into the nooks and crannies (or what they're called) of the paper. But at the same time, it's MUCH harder to get a smooth and even result if you're colouring any larger areas with the same colour and the same shade. So, how do you keep a sharp pencil and still colour smoothly at the same time? I think it's much easier to colour smoothly if the pencil isn't too sharp. Question: The bird you showed. What did you use to get the white and light blues in the shadows in there after you had already coloured it brown?
I'm a beginner so I've no idea, however I did see some artists using an electric eraser to remove some of the colour afterwards to bring out highlights.
Thanks for the advice 😊😊😊, glad I'm still practicing my drawing, there was a time when i tried to color my drawing ( only an eye though) but the result is not what i wanted, so i thought 'maybe i should practice my drawing because i think I'm not on that level yet' , in the end I'm still practicing until now. Even though I'm not realism artist but i quite thankful for your advice. Love your art ❤❤❤ ( sorry if there's wrong word, i'm still learning english)
I've never met a Lisa I didn't love & you are no exception. All the girls in my Wedding were Lisa's except one, then the videography team showed up & the girl assigned to the girls room was also named Lisa, lol. All that to say, you are amazing & this 53 year old old outsider Artist is learning a lot from you. Thank you for your videos. 💜💚💜
omg thank you, i was just starting out art with colored pencils and i didn't know why it never blend, it was probably because i never added alot of layers to blend with
Yeah, I had to stop myself from doing #7 the other day. The proportions were way off and I wasn't even going for realism. Didn't see it until after I already inked the outline, though :( It helps to hear you say that yes, it does take a long time to finish a colored pencil work. I'll try to keep that in mind when I do my practice pieces.
Great advice! I just got my first set of polychromos and I'm so eager to try them out. Any advice for getting a smoother blend if you can't use the paint thinner/odorless mineral spirit to smooth it all out? I'd love to work with them mix media but I think the spirits would ruin the other things I may use
you can use a spray fixitive, or clear gesso in between the other mediums. so you can do markers or whatever first, spray it with fixitive, do the color pencils over it, and use the mineral spirits to blend. just make sure to do this all outdoors or in a garage, because all that stuff is toxic. if you want a less-toxic alternative, try using them with pan pastels, you can dab some pastel over the larger areas to blend them togeather, and the smaller areas you can blend with the pencils themselves by just pressing hard on them
I just found you and I love you, haha. This was so helpful. I don't do art as a profession, but it is something I enjoy doing and I've come across some of the issues you've mentioned in this video, so learning how to fix them is great. Thanks again :)
I always felt like a not sharp pencil makes smoother gradients, idk maybe I just do it wrong with sharp pencils :'D But this video definitely helped me, I am going to try a few things you said to maybe get some better pictures done. Actually I was happy with my drawings a quite long time but since a few weeks, maybe even months I just don't get the drawings to look like I wanted to. I am not only into realism like my drawing style is more something manga/semi-realistic thing I don't know, but maybe with your advices it will get better (especially realistic portraits) so thanks a lot :) And btw. I love how you say that "mistakes" aren't always mistakes if you like how it looks. I see so many videos like this where artist talk about mistakes a lot of people make and often a lot of people feel kinda hurt with that because that would mean in some way that their drawings aren't good - but that is not true. If you like it - it is fine!

Use an exacto knife to sharpen the lead itself and then you only have to use a sharpener when the lead gets to close the the wood.

I know you werent talking to me, but I dont have a sharpener or an exacto knife
They're pretty cheap at any walmart, hardware, or craft/art store and are a pretty good investment in general.

Great advice! I just got my first set of polychromos and I'm so eager to try them out. Any advice for getting a smoother blend if you can't use the paint thinner/odorless mineral spirit to smooth it all out? I'd love to work with them mix media but I think the spirits would ruin the other things I may use
LittleSqueesh Maybe try a colourless blender? I use that for my drawings ^^
you can use a spray fixitive, or clear gesso in between the other mediums. so you can do markers or whatever first, spray it with fixitive, do the color pencils over it, and use the mineral spirits to blend. just make sure to do this all outdoors or in a garage, because all that stuff is toxic. if you want a less-toxic alternative, try using them with pan pastels, you can dab some pastel over the larger areas to blend them togeather, and the smaller areas you can blend with the pencils themselves by just pressing hard on them
I set all the layers and shades and then I go over it with the white pencil (pressing hard) ✏️ it leaves a very smooth and blended effect
Some great tips here. Thank you.
I just found you and I love you, haha. This was so helpful. I don't do art as a profession, but it is something I enjoy doing and I've come across some of the issues you've mentioned in this video, so learning how to fix them is great. Thanks again :)
My friend told her daughter the same thing, if they love her than she wasn't a mistake
I always felt like a not sharp pencil makes smoother gradients, idk maybe I just do it wrong with sharp pencils :'D
But this video definitely helped me, I am going to try a few things you said to maybe get some better pictures done. Actually I was happy with my drawings a quite long time but since a few weeks, maybe even months I just don't get the drawings to look like I wanted to. I am not only into realism like my drawing style is more something manga/semi-realistic thing I don't know, but maybe with your advices it will get better (especially realistic portraits) so thanks a lot :)
And btw.
