This is the first time I've seen this video though it has been up for quite a while now. I've been drawing with graphite for many years now because for me gray tones are what I am good at. Just recently I've had this desire to use colors. Especially color pencils. This tutorial is quite insightful as well as entertaining. The day before I watched a different video in which the person demonstrated the opposite of your technique. Both in the end results are remarkable in their own way. I plan to try many different techniques and compare the different approaches using similar/same images. Thanks for posting this video. It has been quite helpful.
This drawing looks absolutely amazing! I always struggel with the shadows, so my drawing gets a bit too dark (as you said it doesn't match the original skin tone anymore). I also like both of these kind of videos, oil and colored pencil tutorials, so just keep doing what you like. Thanks for sharing all your experiences with us!!
Hi Sergey, I love your painting tutorials , you are a great Artist. Sure do more oil painting ones please. I am going to learn from you. I like your honest approach in all you say to the viewers. All the best.
c'est absolument incroyable de réalité, je vais mettre la vidéo au ralenti et essayer car c'est tellement beau et bien démontré, que je vais me remettre aux crayons merci pour tous ces tutoriels, c'est très généreux.merci Sergey
I never thought about making highlights without the bright contrast. I like it better! It makes people look more real. Photos can trick us up, not only in color but also in values.
I work a lot with coloured pencils, usually Caren d'ache luminance but I do have the polychromos too, your tips here have answered a very frustrating problem, blending polychromos! I have tried and tried to use the chromos like my wax based pencils and ended up with very poor results. I blow the dust off my chromos and try this method today. Thanks for the demo.
Kathleen Obrien thank you too, they are not wax based, so we have to work in layers from light to dark ones, they are not supposed to blend, but you should try some more, I am sure you will succeed.😉
Beautiful work! Thank you for all your videos. I've enjoyed watching them. The colored pencils are amazing and the portrait looks real. I am going to try them. I usually paint with oil, but I'm a novice compared to you! You made me realize that I need to practice more on drawing. Thank you!
I really love your oil painting tutorials, but this drawing tutorial is so fantastic! It has opened a whole new world for me, as I had no idea you could achieve results like this. I am trying to gain the skills to recreate a beautiful photo of my granddaughter and her mother. I may eventually achieve this in oils, but will definitely attempt to create it in colored pencils first. I’m looking forward to any tutorials you create, painting or drawing!
I was very happy to see you drawing in color pencils, I do like the Polychromes, Luminances, Pablo's & old Prismacolors. Although this portrait didn't come as your regular ultra real look that you do according to my humble opinion. I have not seen if you have done any other after this, I hope so because I beleive that you can do wonderful ultra realistic portraits, same as you do with oil & acrylics. I admire many of the ones you have done. Best luck!
Thanks for this great video. I have polychromos coming in the mail and I didn’t realize just how different the blending techniques would be compared to my wax-based luminance and prismas. There are a lot of polychromos reviews out there but I haven’t seen one as informative as this one. Thanks!! :-)
I got those great sets, and I'm just not sure how exactly to use them to the full potential of them. One of the sets, is the 120 set of Faber-Castell Polychromos. I also still need to increase and improve my basic drawing skills
I think you’ve done a great job here!! You achieved a very beautiful and realistic drawing! One of the issues I face while drawing with colored pencil polychromos is when I’ m layering colors and then start pressing on the paper sometimes I do lose the color and tone I was willing for and I am unable to fix it because the surface is burnished at that time.
Sergey, thank you for taking the time to show your process. It really helpful to those of us that are not experience with different mediums. I hope to see more tutorials... specially in pastels ;o)
Your skills are fine-tuned and I like the result, although I wonder if you could burnish the highlights on the cheeks to get an even more smooth skin surface. That's all I have as far as critique. Yes, I would like to see more colored pencil polychromos portrait tutorials. I will eventually get the Caran D'ache Luminance colors but I am going to buy a set of polychromos ones first.
Sergey, thanks for the great lesson. Yup, keep the drawings coming please. If one does not know how to draw well, paintings will be less than adequate. My drawing used to be strictly in graphite. Now, I'm having a ball with colored pencils and you are quit the instructor.
Heya! Awesome tutorial, thanks for sharing your knowledge! No matter what mediums we're using, if we have the foundation we will achieve what we plan to plus other important aspects such as inspiration and concentration. Now, I have a little advice, if you'd like to consider, regarding your tutorial. While you were explaining about the nose, the screen was showing me you drawing the eyes so as a noob, I have to see what I hear in that moment. Big thumbs up, though, and have fun creating some more art! 😁✌🏻
I was pleasantly surprised to see you use my medium-of-choice...Polychromos Colored Pencils! The technique which you demonstrated is one of many, with some allowing for light-to-dark and dark-to-light. Any technique one chooses can result in beautiful and archival artwork!
Hi sergey! Really liked this one! But I did not understand how you blended the colors so well. I have seen some other videos where they used burnishing and solvents. I tried on one of my work but after sometime it just wouldnt accept any more color..
my best tip, other than layering, is to TAKE YOUR TIME! just cuz you see someone draw AND colour something phenomenal in a speed drawing that's 10-25 minutes long, doesn't mean it took them that long. For me, when i first started out many years ago, i swore i had to have been stupid cuz it took me HOURS to finish a realistic looking piece. Only to realize a couple years after thinking this way, i finally realized the pieces i seen everybody else making in these speed drawings took them HOURS to make. slow and steady wins the race people
Well it’s better than I could do for sure,it does seem to me that the chin is off and the lips are also off. However like I said , better than I could do.
Very skilfully rendered yet, in my opinion, whilst you have an excellent likeness, the drawing doesn't seem to me to be quite at the same angle as the reference photograph. A tracing to overlay would show if this were so or not. In my opinion, this doesn't matter since the likeness is there, and the tutorial is very helpful. Perhaps different types of pencils: watercolour, pastel, as well as more polychrome would be great. I've read the use of mineral spirits to blend and it would be helpful to see this done. Also, the grisaille tutorial being taken to completion in oils. These suggestions are in response to your video.
Doesnt prismacolor look smoother as compared to Polychromos. I am having a real hard time blending in the polychromos. They just wont blend :). Going to draw the 3rd portrait. Was planning a mixture of prisma and poly, but i think i ll go with full poly and see how it turns out
Hi Sergey, nice tutorial, thumbs up from me.I love to work with FC Polychromos, although there are so many more nice products out there which I sometimes take as an addition to my drawings it's probably the German quality you get when going with FC. Comparing them with some other American, British and French pencils they seem to be generally harder and less colour intensive, but as you said in your video, you don't want to work quick and easy with coloured pencils, but in layers, many layers. If you have a look on instagram @tomgrizzlyfinearts I posted a couple of snapshots of childrens portraits done in polychromos as well as other stuff. Generally speaking I think one can achieve outstanding results with these pencils, but one needs to be careful and very patient and without the basic understanding of how layers work, especially when it comes to achieving "blends", one can quickly mess up things beyond repair and needs to start over again. But no master ever was born being a master, right?
Mainly, layer a really light yellow and mix in orange brown, pink as you need from your reference, don’t press too hard, little steps make a big difference
i habe faber castell polychromos and really struggle with them i think this is beutiful but that the coloring should be more smooth on the paper and not show any while paper marks or things like that and i think you should make some more hair detail but youre still much better with them than i am haha
I'm using faber castell water colored pencil but my problem Is I don't know how to shade😭 I know the important things about shading but I don't have much colors to shade...

Those were some of the best tips when it comes to using polychromos. Thanks a lot for the info
Really like the drawing tutorials, especially portraits! Thank you!!
An excellent tutorial, one of the very best I've seen. Thanks.
loving Polychormos pencils for a change from oil painting! Thank you for this detailed portrait sketching tutorial 🥰

Great tips on colored pencil drawing.... moreeee😊
Thank you so much!!! I was going about using my polychromos completely wrong! Definitely going to be trying this now.
I never thought about making highlights without the bright contrast. I like it better! It makes people look more real. Photos can trick us up, not only in color but also in values.
I would have loved a list of the colours used. Looks amazing 💕
Really nice, useful, and didactic. Thank you very much. Interested in both, color pencil and oil portraits.
Such a fantastic video with really useful tips about tone and color. I would love to see more colored pencil portrait tutorials from you.
Very good work, well done, can you tell me about the type of paper, it's smooth?

This tutorial explains well how the polychromos work and what you should and shouldn't do :) Nice work!
Beautiful
Beautiful and very helpful. Came here trying to learn how to blend polychromos but this is actually better. all the tones and shading are stunning
So neatly done! I usually approach my drawings starting with the skin, and by mapping the general lights and shadows.
marvellous.....i,m a fan 4 sure

I liked the tutorial. I would like to see more like it: portraits of women in colored pencil.
Beautiful, I would love to see tutorials on both. Thank You so much for sharing.
Excellent. Love to see more col pencil tutorials
Wow very realistic
eres el mejor hermano, te la rifas y espero ver más tutoriales tuyos, me encanta tu trabajo

It's good to try new mediums, great tips
By layering the colours it gradually started to look smooth and realistic. Keep it up. What paper did you use for this portrait ?
White paper. Welcome
@@jadasparkles9yearsago580 thanks bitch

very cool! Loved seeing how is looked like a painting. I would also love to see acrylics used for portrait of young children.
beautiful!
Awesome sir
Sergey, thank you for taking the time to show your process. It really helpful to those of us that are not experience with different mediums. I hope to see more tutorials... specially in pastels ;o)
New subscriber!!! Really enjoyed this! Please do many more polychromos colored pencil tutorials. Love drawing people and am new to this medium.
Thanks 😉😊

would eally like to know your opinion as to the ideal colorpencil and the paper used with it........i,m a fan for life
garrie kleinhans I’ve seen a lot of realistic portrait artist use Bristol Smooth 3000 paper with Prismacolor pencils
Hi sergey! Really liked this one! But I did not understand how you blended the colors so well. I have seen some other videos where they used burnishing and solvents. I tried on one of my work but after sometime it just wouldnt accept any more color..
PLEASE SHOW SOME OF GRAPHITE PENCIL PORTRAIT SKETCHES
Nice video and I would like to see a black and gray drawing
I only have Prisma pencils. They are wax, and from these I often get wax blooms ... Your art is amazing
So beautiful. Have you tried Prisma pencils?
I have often tried to create a portrait of Princess Charlotte, but have much difficulty with her eyes...
no, I use Faber usually)))
@@SergeyGusevArtist I have these now... still working on Charlotte..

Why did keep using blue in forhead or close to lips?
Perfect....the issues I have is making reflection from light on faces or things....Extremely difficult.
hi can you indicate what is the paper you used?
maazing work btw!
Love your videos, but can you do a tutorial of still life painting?
Really nice! 👏👏
What kind of paper did you use for the drawing with the POLYCHROMOS color pencils?
I love it but why do you like tone down highlights?
Well it’s better than I could do for sure,it does seem to me that the chin is off and the lips are also off. However like I said , better than I could do.
Are they the 36set ?

Hi,I would like to see both, you are good at both & I want to make both
whenever i draw a portrait, it always turns out to look like an ogre
Maybe you could draw less layers xD
Mainly, layer a really light yellow and mix in orange brown, pink as you need from your reference, don’t press too hard, little steps make a big difference
This is a great tutorial however, I always get so confused on where to add the blue tones to the drawing
