If I remember correctly Lars was taken ill on the morning of their headline set and Joey Jordison filled in for all but a few of the songs, Dave Lombardo stood in on Battery and Lars’ drum tech on Fade To Black
If Dave Lombardo had the time to rehearse and play the entire set that night it would’ve been absolutely legendary, beyond what his performance that night already has become. The double kick section at the end just proves how powerful Dave Lombardo is and how amazing Metallica would’ve sounded that night if Dave had played the whole set.
A quick Google search shows this: The METALLICA drummer - who headlines the Donington site tonight (June 10) - had to miss the same date in 2004 after being hospitalized with a mysterious "medical emergency." He was replaced by Joey Jordison of SLIPKNOT and SLAYER's Dave Lombardo.Jun 10, 2006
I was there this year at download. Whilst it was a great experience to see Dave and Joey fill in for the set it definitely highlights how late is the best drummer for the band. It just didn’t have the same feel to it. You can call that feel sloppy if you want but it wasn’t the same.

Wow im 5 months late. Lombardo, Joey, and Lars's drum tech filled in for Lars during his absence. Back then the show was recorded and edited for DVD sales. The full DVD recording is available, but would be copyrighted for TH-cam. So in this video you see DVD video with credits, which is kind of a copyright loophole, mixed in with amateur non copywrit video. All the audio is from post audio mixing of the DVD release. All things considered i think a member of the most touring band ever deserves a night off, and its Dave F*ckin Lombardo playing. I heard when Lars found out he almost turned the plane around to go catch the show lol. The story gets cloudy. Lars was ill, a relative in the old country Sweden was ill or passed and Lars handled it with his private jet cause hes f*kin Lars. No harm no foul and fans got what couldnt be bought. Sh*t i hope James misses one and see Mick Jagger, Halford, and Maynard pickin up mic duties. Great bands used to switch players regularly. Clapton, Cream, Derick and the Dominos are the same band. Add a couple from another band and you got The Birds. Great times
Normally people used hand held cameras back then something like a HI8 style cameras it was all their you just have to search up and down for a audience style shots.
Dave's drumming is more aggressive than Lars' shit . After all , Dave is fuckin awesome metal drummer . 👍🏻……I guess he is playable drummer even every bands . 😎
Lars' kit finally got the thrashing it deserved. Lombardo made Metallica sound like how they are supposed to sound like. Hammett and Hetfield got served with metal up their ass and were left dumbfounded by the ferocity of Lombardo's drumming prowess!
@@dustinmiller1485 was literally about to say the same thing. As much as people hate on Lars, he does add his own taste into their music and it sounds weird without it.
It's blatantly obvious that he is better. And the fact that he didn't know the song like Lars did, yet still was able to stay in time better really shows.

Fastest that song's ever been played, and that drumkit still has monthly hospital visits after the pounding Dave gave it lol
Great live performance but it was often played faster than this, especially after cliff's passing on the remains of the MOP tour

Dave did amazing considering he didn’t have a chance to rehearse. That double bass at the end is godly.

It’s funny, at 3:55 Dave goes into the section that was removed to shorten the song. I don’t think slayer has ever done that live.

Great video, thanks for posting. It's amazing (to me, at least) how much better Het's vocals are today than they were at the time this was recorded.
theres a bit..miscue in dave entering between solo n last verse but its quickly adjusted by heatfield..such a pro,dear lombardo!!
