    This may be trivial, but I spend money at the grocery store the same way: I cut out chips, soda pop, and most baked goods from the bakery section (I can make them at home). Then I splurge on produce, real butter, and baking ingredients. Real coffee and Bigelow's tea.

    Boy did you hit the nail on the head when you said to splurge on contractor vs materials!! I have been through renovations and a custom designed home and I can tell you that spending on the contractor is key. I have seen soooo many people use a friend-of-a-friend or the-guy-down-the-street or your-friend’s-friend’s-third-cousin in renovations and it turns into a disaster costing even more money. It is much easier to change most materials out later. I am going through that now with settling for a material that will need an upgrade just so I can keep my top rated contractor.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yup 👍🏻 Can’t tell you how many times I’ve come through with my contractor to save past shoddy work. It’s such a shame when homeowners have already spent so much on materials Liz!

      Yes. Same here. New to home design and care, but we decided to go with a good contractor even though we have family that could do the job for less. So glad for our decision! Thank you, Julie!

      So true. In the past I splurged on contractors and then used the guy down the street handyman to pant my entire interior of my home.
      Just a couple of years later, the sides of the wall have a layer of paint missing in areas, the front door is red high gloss and in areas I can see brush strokes…
      I’m getting ready to do major renovations now, and I won’t skimp on the contractor ever again.

    I splurged on my washer and dryer. I went for larger tub sizes so I could do larger loads of laundry, especially bedding and towels. They also have the fancy customizable settings because I have allergies and two pets. So there are allergy and sanitary settings. Years later I have yet to regret this purchase.

    Thirty years ago we splurged on an extremely expensive cherry Queen Ann dining room table and chairs, and a Mahogany china closet and sideboard inset with satinwood and ebony. We eat dinner in our beautiful traditional dining room every day, and love it, and the furniture still looks like new, with simple care, and has stood up to hard wear and tear, under the use of a family of 4 big men and me. Quality lasts, it was well worth it, and since the design is classic, it still looks chic. Since the table is not a "set" with the china closet and sideboard, it isn't boring.

    Here's a sofa splurge example. Bought my first sofa at age 30. Had it reupholstered once. Then a leather sofa and a few years ago another upholstered sofa. I am age 71 now so you can see splurging is well worth every penny you spend. The first two were in good shape when I donated them -- I just wanted something different each time. BTW, Julie my score was 100%!

    To me, it makes more sense to splurge on cabinets and skimp on hardware. Hardware is so much easier to upgrade later.

    • @JulieKhuu

      You can pay less on the base cabinet, splurge on the panels and hardware. Win-win Lori! 🙌🏻☺️

      I agree. It won't matter how nice your hardware is if the cabinet falls apart after only a few years of use. Splurge on the cabinets. You can always buy nicer pulls at a later date.

  • @SuchaCaligrrl
    @SuchaCaligrrl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I agree for most, not so much on the kitchen... I'd prefer to splurge on cabinets, I need something sturdy, beautiful long lasting... not something woodpress or from Ikea... knobs, and faucets change in style almost every season and nowadays you can find beautiful inexpensive ones online... and those tend to be the things that get changed more often. I'd splurge on cabinetry all day long.

    • @CowboyBike06
      @CowboyBike06 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but consider the 50s plywood cabinets that are still being used today. It’s good quality basic design and over the years they have become a more integral part of the entire home esthetic. Paint always freshens up old wood.

    • @Heyu7her3

    • @SuchaCaligrrl

      @@CowboyBike06 for sure, I agree 💯, those I wouldn't change for anything, a coat of paint again good quality paint will have them looking good as new. Anything that old that still has life in it is a keeper... they don't make things like they used too. The plywood used now is garbage the plywood used then were used and put together to last a lifetime. Since they can't make them like they used too, I'd still opt for good quality wood, well put together cabinetry, not skimp out on that.

    We spent a crazy amount on our mattress about two years ago... at least we thought it was a crazy amount. However, we don't regret it at all and sleep better than ever because we made that investment. I am a big believer in quality over quantity in my daily life. So I loved hearing from the perspective of a designer when it comes to a home.

Many furniture/decor & rug items have VOCs (volitile organic compounds) including formaldehyde in them which can off-gas & create a toxic environment in our homes. I'm not an expert but have been researching this topic to make my home healthier. So glad I've learned about this topic so now I'm more aware. Some great tips on saving money in places and investing in others. One place that I disagree with you is the dining room table. This is one area I would splurge on the table as well as the chairs. A not well made table is such a problem to live with and if you have family sitting down to eat, then it makes a difference. Where I spent my money? On a mattress, of course. I don't enjoy memory foam and I sleep on my back so I need a mattress that would support my back and still not feel like I was sleeping on nails. It was worth every penny I paid for it. I would love to see your take on different mattresses.

      Both is a good investment but good chairs cost so much more. A beautiful wood table with interesting legs also cost a lot. I had expensive chairs for years until I could afford my dream table. Now that all go together. The homework is to make the sure that if bought separately that the height of the chairs & table are comparable.

    My wife's father hired what turned out to be an unlicensed contractor for a bathroom renovation. Even though my wife made a complete and detailed list of materials she and my father in law wanted the contractor to use, he substituted colors, patterns and cheaper materials without consulting his client. He also cemented the vinyl floor with a product that was not waterproof and failed to level a custom 6 foot bathtub. Not to mention ... he also failed to reinstall the bathroom mirror.
    The estimate for the remodel (in the early 1980"s) was $4,000. By the time this "contractor" was finished, my father-in-law was billed $8,000 for an un level bathtub and a shower enclosure with a door that didn't stay closed. This allowed water to splash on a vinyl floor that wasn't properly glued to the sub floor. The whole thing was a big expensive mess and had to be re done.
    Please people, follow Julie's advice and NEVER use an un qualified, unlicensed contractor!

    For Mattress, i spent on this breathable natural material called latex, instead of memory foam as it traps heat, it was costing me much more but the end result was incredible. I splurged on good sheets recently and am so glad I did. I am a warm sleeper and after buying about five or six different sheet sets to keep cool at night and saving money because I was a student, I was just disappointed each time. I finally bit the bullet and invested in Casper Percale sheets and can finally sleep through the night. Cheaper sheets may mimic the thinner percale material, but they can't deliver the comfort or quality. Yes, please do a video on choosing the right mattress. I need to replace mine and I just bought it last year.

    I was ready to splurge on a great looking comfy sofa, but because I now won't by furniture with duck feathers, leather, or any animal products, or unsustainable, I had to buy a cheaper lesser quality and different look to what I wanted. There are a growing number of people with this dilemma, so I hope that furniture and rug, carpet makers adapt more to this.

    👍🏽 Thank you, Julie! This video was great! As you know, I very recently purchased an old (new to me home) 🏡 I still have lots of work to do! I did break one of your rules on the living room curtains- I have 4 windows- so, while I actually didn’t go the cheapest route… my curtains are polyester (uggh) the pattern printed on them is quite lovely, but when I touch the panels- I am sickened. I have so many projects that I am thinking it will actually take me about 5 years to order the linen drapes I truly want. Buying these curtains based on pattern and reviews-which were quite good- will do for awhile, but when you touch them you know the quality is just not there.

    I splurged on a handmade hanging light and absolutely do not regret! Since we chose to have wild children, we've never put much into a couch. We recently purchased a quality couch. It's been delayed due to COVID but I'm nervous. We still have large, wild dogs. We always will. So I'm hoping by buying better quality, it will last longer. We will be remodeling our kitchen this Fall and your comment about hardware has made me feel so much better about my caninet decision. Although we do most the work ourselves, I 100% agree with contractor! Always splurge on contractor!

    about 25 yrs ago, i bought a swaim burgundy mohair velvet couch that cost more than most ppl's cars, but it really makes a statement and will outlive me. do i regret it? yes and no. it's high impact and makes my living room look luxurious, but i probably couldve spent the money more wisely. you can always order furniture from the southeast (north carolina) and get high ticket items for half the price, sometimes. i wish i wouldve known this at the time. btw, i got almost every answer wrong lol. great video with good points, as always.

    I splurged on my coffee table about 8 years ago. It's not huge, it's hand carved out of mango wood, it's warm and inviting. It adds a soft feel to my predominate clean-lines modern (mid-mod) feel of my bigger pieces. My style leans a bit in the scandi-japandi-mid-mod direction but with a bit of an eclectic feel. Long story short..I haven't regretted that purchase once. It's the most money I'd spent on a piece of future at the point (new most expensive piece is my beautiful mid-mod bed frame... I've already got a great mattress). Every time I see that coffee table (or bed frame) it brings me happiness.
    I do have inexpensive pieces I feel that way about too.. like a hand carved side table from India that I bought at a flee market, and a set of authentic mid-mod black lacquer and pale cane barstools, as well as an 8' reclaimed wood and raw steel dining table me ex-husband I made for our custom furniture (etc) business, but the only money spent on that was the raw materials and time.

    I came late for this party but the girl needs to work. I hope you and your loved ones are safe during this times and always.
    Due to your knowledge and positive attitude, we are all better, thank you!.
    I did very good on this selections, without knowing I had selected the right items for my place , like the kitchen hardware vs. the cabinets. I spend a lot in comparison of how many cabinets I had to buy for, no regrets... they are like the jewelry on a basic black dress.
    Now...regarding the sofa my experience is different. I bought a very comfortable Edward Ferrell sofa (silvery/ green, chenille fabric). I bought and return multiple accent pillows, they just didn't look right. Finally I find out why... they weren't the same quality, the sofa and the pillows weren't communicating with each other, sound crazy? I bought different quality accent pillows, what a difference!!! I have everything from vintage well preserved needle point to faux animal print. I also think is how they are finished and the filler, most of them either have a silky robe cording or some kind of tassels and their filler feels "bouncy" . Thanks to your "master classes" I had learned that also is about the overall look not just the sofa in this case but what is around it to make the whole design work, even the coasters on my coffee table . They don't need to be expensive but need to be quality, related or unique.
    Now, I have a selection for you on what to splurge; Art vs. Frame? 😎😁
    Thanks again for your time.
    Vr.
