HR Ramaswamy Iyengar came to Bengaluru from Holenarsipur in 1956 and set up a bakery in Basavanagudi, an old market area surrounded by villages where groundnuts were cultivated. Selling a limited variety of pure vegetarian breads, buns and biscuits, the bakery fell upon hard times due to the rationing of flour and other essentials in the seventies. Faced with dire prospects, Ramaswamy Iyengar looked at the plentiful groundnut for survival and in doing so hit upon a unique recipe combining peanuts with a blend of spices that he named the Congress kadlekai, owing to the legend that during British times, secret notes were sent by Indian National Congress party workers hidden in sacks of groundnuts. I spent an afternoon with the second and third generation of the Sreenivasa Brahmins Bakery family to watch the making of the iconic Congress kadlekai and also taste some of the traditional items that make this 66-year-old institution a hit not just with locals, but also with Bengaluru diaspora across the globe who throng here for the kadlekai, nippat, khara buns, palya buns, puffs and other traditional Iyengar bakery treats.

@Kripal Sir, with all due respect, I would like to inform you that everyone who goes to have the KBC will not be served with that much butter. It was personally improvised for you to savour it. I live very near to DVG road and I’ve had it many a times but never had the same amount of butter that was in the KBC served to you.

We have been enjoying the SBB for the past 60 odd years - when the Bread was 30 ps and Bun was 10 ps. Surprisingly, both have the same quality and taste even today! The legendary items include Benne Biscuit, Baked Nippat, Congress Kadlekai, Honey Cake, Sponge Cake, Dilpasand & Dilkush, KBC. Each if items continues to be classics. Even the latest introductions like Sabbaki Nippat, Butter Murukku, pickkes, etc continue to be extraordinary. Thanks to RA

Watched this today. I have been eating ‘Congress kadlekai’ and ‘Gandhi kadlekai’ since early 1960s. So, both the ‘naming’ , ‘timing’ and ‘origination’ does not belong to SBB. It is factually incorrect. However, I love SBB.
Whenever I go to my grandma's house we usually take all those bakery items from this srinivas bakery😊.

I found the lady absolutely amiable. Infact it shows that she's taken such a keen interest in the bakery reaching what it is today, so it's perfectly natural to want to feel like talking about it more. I didn't find the attitude bad or annoying in any way.

@Kripal , The name Congress Peanuts came into being when Congress party got split in 1969. And since this version of peanuts is split variety, the name was casually kept by the people and later got stuck.

Great idea to have them in the airport and export abroad. Nothing beats KBC, capsicum puffs and palya bun from this place. Would be really happy if I get their products in the US. Forgot to pickup may favorites last time (unpardonable - i live 2 Kms from this place). Thanks for another great video - you bring back a lot of memories.

Hi owners, I am your customer for 25 years. I did go to you store on Bull Temple road on Saturday 4th June around 1.30pm. I has capsicum puff, and my experience is very bad. Puff was stale one. I had stomach infection bcos of this. Your ppl who are in the billing and sale's are not customer friendly. They think that they work for Apple Inc, USA. I did purchase 250grams of khara Potato chips, this chips had more salt than khara and I have put it in trash. Quality is not maintained. Another customer on the same day took puff and she complained about the hair in the puff. My interest is not to visit the shop again
Would be very nice if Bengaluru’s bakery snack items like congress khadlekhai and averekallu khadlekhai mixture are imported and made available in the US. Indian stores here lack some South Indian snacks and also would be nice to see SBB brand on the shelves :)

An eggless cake may satisfy vegan's, but for everyday folks like me, it pales in comparison where bakery items have eggs in it. Eggs along with meats & other vege's, are a binding agent as well as its nutritious.
Please! compare apples to apples. The Parisien bakeries, along with Parsi bakeries are any day better than these bakeries.

No doubt it is a iconic bakery in basavanagudi like Subbamma Stores. I am sorry to say that the Owner is lying that his father invented Congress Kadlekai. Sorry to say that it was called congress Kadlekai because when original congress split in 1969 into Indira congress and Old congress. CONGRESS KADLEKAI was available in almost all bakeries condiments stores where they khara mixtures, buns, breads etc..were sold. They became popular because they were using more asapoedia.
We have been patrons of this bakery for decades. The latest video on Food Lovers TV re- kindled the passion and we drove for an hour to savour some of the delicacies.
We stopped by the new store on Bull Temple road.
To our shock, extremely unfriendly and ill informed staff...it was about 5.30 in the evening and they had run out of Puffs, KBC and most fresh stuff and had no courtesy to even tell us if stock would come any time soon..
Glossy Videos on social media wont help...customer service will..
Disappointed, we walked all the way to the old store on DVG road to see a different world, all stock including KBC and puffs were available and staff were co-operative..also Mr.Ramprasad attending to customers personally..

Food has many stories - when it tastes nice interesting stories will emerge and get associated with it - so enjoy the food n stories too
Example - in udupi there is a store called jahanghir Bhat sweet stall, while in uttara Kannada there is a jalebi bhat store
So enjoy the sweet at both places and stories too
Likewise here too enjoy congress kadalekayi at all places with different tastes styles etc

I think I'll have to take a rented place in bengaluru for atleast 3 months in order to savour all these goodies that I've been watching on this channel since last year or so. God the amount of stuff these fabulous Iyengar/Brahmin Bakery's floor to ceiling racks house 🤪 One would need atleast a fortnight or so, just to go through each one of them.

Great episode, discovered this place few months back and have been rooting for this bakery since then. Anything you pick from this place is absolutely authentic and delicious. Kripal Sir seems extra happy discovering the delicacies and the joy is contagious.

Visited this place this evening... And as expected they had run out of most of their items (thanks to this channel).
When we reached the new place we got to know they had just run out of honey Cake...
But luckily we got to meet Mrs Vathsala Prasad who said that few boxes have just left for the old shop...
She was kind enough to call their staff and ensured to keep aside 2 pieces of cake for us...
We finally managed to grab our bite....

So east Bangalore has no iconic eateries. South and West Bangalore is slightly far for us.

There is nothing in the world comparable to the traditionally made Iyengar bakery products. This Bakery is Iconic in B'lore.
